RATINGS: DAYS Has Strong Week! Only Soap To Gain Viewers!

The ratings for the week of July 23rd- 27th are out and it is Days of our Lives hot on the heels of their big cliffhanger, The DAYSaster, (before the show went on a two week hiatus for the Summer Olympics on NBC) that stood tall among the rest of the daytime soaps.

DAYS moved into third place ahead of General Hospital, and was the only daytime drama to add viewers for the week adding  + 103,000.  DAYS also added the most female viewers in the key demo of 18-49 adding +87,ooo, and for the first time in long time, was not coming in with at an all-time low in the rating share for that demo as well.   Could the fact that DAYS was going on hiatus helped the series?

Over at General Hospital, the lone ABC soap tallied 2,432,000 total viewers for the ratings period, and about -50,000 lower  in total than third place DAYS.    However it was the CBS soaps, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful that took the biggest hits for the ratings period.   B&B lost the most viewers for the week  -91,000, while Y&R lost another -60,000 but still is managing to hold up the number one spot because they are so far ahead of the other programs official numbers.

Check out the entire ratings courtesy of Soap Opera Network here!  Then, it’s time to play “Soap Opera Armchair Quarterback Programming Executive”!  So, what would you do to keep the momentum of DAYS?  Did you like the DAYSaster?  What would be a good strategy for GH to move ahead of DAYS and capture the number three slot among soaps?  What can be done to help B&B and Y&R as their numbers were down this week? What would you like to see story wise on air on your favorite soap to make you want to tune-in?  Weigh-in and more importantly tune-in to your favorite soaps each day and watch the commercials!

Loved the Daysaster. Looking forward to the aftermath/fallout. I hope when Days comes back we get a more balanced show, with more of the characters more often. It’s been a tad lop-sided recently. Some characters getting WAY more airtime then others. I am in the “key” demo, and I don’t just want to see the younger set. I love my vets, especially Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall!

I glad days of our lives gain viewers from the explosion cliffhanger and hears me hopen that aftermath. Keeps viewers tune in. Good days writers.cast.crew and producers.

Dool never disappoints this viewer of 20 years, I’m in my 30s I enjoy the younger set a lot and some of the vets.

The previous two weeks were must see t.v. for me. I hope they don’t throw away what they’ve already written and go backward like they did when they received 2.0 last November.

Personally, I couldn’t care less about “the vets” there isn’t a whole lot left for them to do that they haven’t already done, but I know they’re beloved so to keep DAYS on the air, I’m willing to take one for the team.

I am going to miss seeing Will and EJ interact but I am hopeful that this will be the beginning of a beautiful “friendship” for Will and Sonny.

The Daysaster and promise of new stories from writers who know the core of the characters we love has me checking back in!

I think if in order for Gh ratings to go up bring more characters from OLTL., that ‘s what the viewers and fans want. After all those are the people that boost the ratings abc has not figured it out.

Ditto!!!!!

Ejami, Ejami, Ejami !!!! General Hospital is the BEST soap right now I love everything about it. The only thing Days has is the chemistry between EJ and Sami and strange enough EJ and Will!!

GH needs to capitalize on the momentum of the Robin story. For the first time in a long time I was extremely engaged in the show during the scenes concerning that story. That is because it has to do with GH characters and hopefully will be linked to the history of favorites like Anna and Robert. I found Jerry Jacks to be very engaging. But he needs to be the tip of the iceburg. I’m HOPING that he is the frontman for Faison. Jerry and Faison together would be a scary awesome team! I will say that the Robin story needs to have a big payoff for Scorpio fans! We need to have Robert as a part of that story, otherwise we will feel cheated AGAIN by TPTB. I am NOT INTERESTED in the Trey, Kristina, Joe Jr, story. I am also not interested in Starr and Michael. Those characters get alot of airtime, which boggles my mind. They literally suck the air out of the show. How they get the amount of airtime that they do and I haven’t seen Felicia in ages just doesn’t make sense. It’s so frustrating. I like Todd, but he gets the most airtime out of everyone. It’s annoying. For once and for all, RC and FV need to get the message…we want our GH characters front and center and we want their history honored! GH characters should have the most airtime! Then we might be more open to newbies and OLTL characters. We need time to let these characters grow on us. They shouldn’t be shoved down our throats as much as they are. RC and FV seem to be going in an exciting direction with the Robin story, but they still have work to do.

GH gained over 700,000 viewers from their GAA lead-in and was down only slightly from the same week a year ago (when they had a much stronger lead-in with OLTL). They were also up a little in W18-49. After the disaster that was the previous regime, I never thought that I could be this enthused and excited about GH again, but FV and RC (and the wonderful cast and crew) have me anxiously anticipating every episode.

I agree!!!!!!!! A lot of good stuff will be happening on Gh..I read it in soaps in depth …..Aug. issue…………………Everyone one should buy & read it and see for yourself…This should boost GH ratings up….

GO DAYS! I will always root and support this underdog show.

Ratings went up with Todd and Blair, and then back down again. Also, it was nice to be mainly Sonny and Jason free until last week. Overall, the show is much better now than it was last year.

I agree…….

GO EJAMI!!!!!!

EJILL!!!

AND EJILL!!!!!!! I love them.

YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best soap opera on television since “As the World Turns” right now. I love it. Now rehire Sarah Joy Brown!!

Which show, Days or GH? I love both but GH is on fire right now.

I was speaking of DAYS. I find GH absolutely boring and dragged out.

I like were Gh is going…..Find it interesting & exciting …….

I’m sure some do, I don’t. I find it very predictable and very boring.

I like the story to do with Robin.. There will be exciting stuff happening in Aug….

Never watched Days… Faison on GH…..It would explode…I think it’s 50/50 on what characters are on Mon.-Fri. Everyone gets their turn…..Don’t like Joe Jr. either or Kristina………………….

Loving GH now. Best show on TV. Jerry back was huge shock to me. Loved seeing Robin also. I really hope Faison is involved too. The ratings should be much higher for This awesome show.

Every time I see GH, which is every day. I get so excited that it is coming on and then it is so wonderful, I am happy. That is the depth of this great show. To make me that happy to see it every day means something to me. Meanwhile Y&R has sunk to an all time low as far as I am concerned. Why the heck someone would put Victor with Sharon I can’t even believe it. It makes me want to vomit. That is the sign of a crappy show. I stopped recording it so if I watch it fine if not I don’t care. Go General Hospital. Love it.

DAYS is my #1 show….and honestly… I was an avid… everyday Y&R fan… it still surprises me.. that i left that show… and started watching GH… I’m so glad I did… I love GH… i’m with you… Nanc…. I look forward to the whole hour.

People. Give DAYS a shot… I rank it right up their, ratings wise… with GH.

1. GH
2. DAYS
3. B&B
4. Y&R

i agree with both nancy and patrick i love GH my no 1 soap for me

i agree victor and sharon make me sick, weird, no longer dvr it or could care less
if i watch it, days is better but \joe mascolo was back on days

love sonny and jason i also think alot of air time on gh is given to starr, todd
too much, its GH not oltl but do love john mcbain

Am I the only one who thought the Daysaster was a dud? Mostly because I know they are killing off one of my all time favorite characters Jack! This is a huge slap in the face to long time fans of the show. If they were going to kill long time characters off at least kill a boring one like Austin. Carrie and Austin could have stayed for the charity event and Austin be killed in the explosion to free Carrie up to be with Rafe. Instead they are killing Jack and Madison and putting Jennifer with Brady which is terrible. I also loathe Nicole and Daniel. Nicole used to be a vixen but has turned into a boring heroine now. She always hated Rafe and Daniel and even Chloe back in the day. She always had to fight for her man. I’m just not sure what the Days producers are doing. The only good thing on the show is Will and EJ but that won’t go anywhere either.

The only thing that really interests me on Days is EJ. EJ and Will…. EJ and Sami.

ya

did you watch days 14 years ago… when Eileen Davidson was on? She rocked.. and was it. I am beside myself… LOL… waiting for her STAR return… Kristen and Peter Blake with Daddy Stefano were supreme… they were high brow and added so much class to DAYS… these three were in a class all to themselves. Imagine… these three back… i so wish Jason Brooks would come back, these three with EJ and Chad… Stellar company. the DiMera’s are back in top form.

Ew, if they put Jennifer with Brady, I’m not sure I can watch. His character has already flatlined and having him paired with Jennifer (who looks like she could be his mother) will just be the kiss of death for him. Another reason soaps are tanking, crazy pairings! BTW I’ll be ffing through all MR scenes from now anyway.

It looks like Brady and Melanie are coming…ew. Jennifer belongs with Daniel.

Wish MR had kept her tweet to herself, now she has created a PR nightmare for Days and Sony. The show is already in trouble, and her tweet with a “winky face” did NOTHING to help — but LOTS to hurt. Days and the other actors do not deserve to be harmed by her not being able to think before she tweets. She harmed her fellow actors, Days and her employer (Sony) to support fast food. If she had taken a half sec to think that Days is doing a gay SL and this could hurt the show, then maybe tweeting wouldn’t have seemed like such a good idea. I was also disappointed by what she tweeted to Candace Cameron (whose career is already washed up and also tweeted, but Candace had nothing to lose). MR’s tweet to CC made it sound like she really doesn’t appreciate or value her fans.

Didn’t think guys like watching soaps. My husband doesn’t care for them, he likes action stuff….

Susan, what a rotten thing to say! I didn’t think you were that kind of person. You are saying this simply because you don’t agree with what I posted. How sad. ;-(

It didn’t mean anything rotten ..And it has nothing to do with your comments at all.. You are totally off base…I don’t see anything rotten about my comment..You took it the wrong way……………….Has nothing to do with your post…How sad ,WHAT???? I was just trying to make conversation. I see e few guys on this site watch the soaps..All I was trying to say I didn’t think guys where interested in the soaps.I thought it was just a girl thing..But I was wrong about that. I was surprised that men like to watch the soaps too…That’s all…I wasn’t trying to insult you at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You got the wrong idea…..Some men like to watch soaps & others don’t..That’s all I was trying to say…No harm intented…I hope this staightens everything out…Never expected that you would get upset about a harmless comment…I wasn’t trying to be rotten at all…

Lots of men watch soaps … just as lots of men write for the soaps. How far off the road do you live???

How far off the road do I live !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that is not very nice… You don’t have to get nasty over it…I will avoid making harmless comments on any of your posts… I know men write for the soaps…You surprised me by your comments…To one soap lover to another let us just enjoy watching the soaps…Over and out…………….

Susan, I am sorry if I mistook what you said as a dig, but it did seem like an odd statement in this day and time. I guess we’re all a bit sensitive. Unlike MR, I 100% apologize to you because your comments have always been among my faves. I guess that’s why I was surprised. Glad you’re not a rotten person. I was just so surprised at the comments I saw elsewhere. Days is in trouble and I don’t want the show and its stars damaged by boycotting because of MR’s comments. Again, my apologies. I couldn’t imagine you were that kind of person. Glad you’re not. We are fellow soap lovers. Please don’t stop responding to my comments; after all, we agree on a lot.

Matt, apology accepted……. And I am glad you enjoy reading my comments..I get very passionate with my comments especially when it comes to OLTL & GH……….Feel free to reply to any of my comments.. I like reading the comments that i get in response to my comments….By the way OLTL was my favorite soap !!!! And I miss it still & always will. I have the cast picture & look at it everyday !!!!!!!! And GH ‘s new time in Sept. Taking OLTL’s timeslot seems weird to me..GH as long as I could remember has always been on at 3:00..I first start watching abc soaps with my mom & have never stopped watching them…I like my stories in the afternoon. Now I only have GH to watch..I guess something is better than nothing at all…Still want OLTL back..But that isn’t going to happen..ABC is so thoughtless in cancelling OLTL.. Again, apology accepted…

I am a dude and I LOVE Days of Our Lives! Tied with Degrassi for my favorite show ever!

Thank you, Susan. I do enjoy reading your comments. I hated seeing OLTL and AMC canceled, so I have stood strong with fans of both shows and have never watched either of the replacement shows (The Chew, The Revolution, etc.) I just don’t want any of the remaining soaps canceled. I am glad you have GH to watch, but I agree it’ll be weird seeing GH in OLTL’s old time. Still I’d rather see a soap in any of the time slots than more reality TV junk. Again, thanks for accepting my apology, Susan.

The Chew…I think it will be gone soon. Plus, GAA is not doing well in the ratings either. Maybe OLTL or AMC will return because talk shows and reality TV are not working for ABC Daytime.

I want that too. But Mr. Lee said they had no plans in reviving OLTL or AMC…That they were constantrating on GH & it’s new time in Sept…At OLTL timeslot at 2:00pm….I can’t stand The Chew or GAA..Never watch those crappy shows at all…They should be canceled ASAP!!!!! I want my stories in the afternoon not these reality/cooking/talk shows..I want OLTL & miss it a lot still….

With all these departures, EJami scenes (which I personally hate), and WilSon kissing, I think that more viewers will keep coming in. The only thing I see turning away viewers is the end of Lumi, and the coming of Safe.

Steve Kent Reportedly OUT as Sony Pictures Television VP in Charge of DAYS and Y&R

On Friday, reports surfaced that Steve Kent, Senior Executive Vice President of Programming at Sony Pictures Television, is no longer with the company and overseeing the Sony soap operas, Days of our Lives and The Young and the Restless.

According to Soap Opera Digest, a set side source reported that Kent’s last day was last Friday, April 12th, which was one day after what would have been his final appearance in his Sony VP role at the Days of our Lives 15,000th episode on set celebration.

During that ceremony, Kent gave a brief speech giving kudos to DAYS for its incredible milestone. Days is a co-production of Sony Pictures Television and Corday Productions, while Y&R is produced by Bell Dramatic Serial Company in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Kent started his soap opera career as a producer for CBS’ defunct Capitol and then as the supervising producer of NBC’s Santa Barbara from1984 to 1993.

At Sony, before his role overseeing the soaps, Kent was Senior Executive Vice President of International Productions for Sony Pictures Television International department.

The nomination makes Van Dyke the oldest Daytime Emmy nominee in history at 98-years-old.  In addition, motion picture and TV star, Guy Pearce, is also nominated as Guest Performer for his longtime role as Mike Young in the reboot of Neighbours.

Speaking of Neighbours, the Australian soap opera also received its first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Daytime Drama Series now that its a revival can be streamed on Amazon Freevee. In the Daytime Drama series categories, CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless each scored 12 nominations more than any other show. Leading the acting nominations was B&B, who landed 7 performers in the various categories, a first in its 37-year history.
