Daytime 42nd Creative Arts Emmy Awards

The 42nd Annual Daytime Emmys are in the record books, and there were certainly some memorable moments when the envelopes were ripped open and the winners revealed!  In the Outstanding Daytime Drama Series category, there was a rarity … a tie!  Days of our Lives and The Young and the Restless each took home the gold when their names were called by the soap icons of General Hospital, Anthony Geary (Luke) and Genie Francis (Laura), who were reunited on-stage to present the final award of the night.  However, it was CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful … with wins for Outstanding Writing Team in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Directing Team in a Drama Series, combined with their eight wins at the Daytime Creative Arts Emmys two nights prior … that took home the most gold of any soap opera in the 42nd annual kudofest campaign!  And speaking of the Daytime Creative Arts Emmys, there was a tie during those ceremonies, too … only this time it was a three-way tie!  GH’s Donna Mills, B&B’s Fred Willard, and Y&R’s Ray Wise shared the award when their names were called in the first ever presentation of the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series category.

Overall, the acting categories were we led by ABC’s General Hospital with four major victories, including the aforementioned Mills.  Anthony Geary broke his own record taking home his eighth Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his incredible performance in the ‘Luke/Fluke’ storyline throughout 2014.  Maura West, a previous two-time Lead Actress Daytime Emmy winner for her work on ATWT, took home her first Lead Actress prize for her role as tough mob gal, Ava Jerome.  Chad Duell, who plays Michael Corinthos, entered the field for the first time in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, and won it!

Days of our Lives’ Freddie Smith, after losing in the Younger Actor in a Drama Series previously, finally got his due and won gold for his performance as Sonny Kiriakis.  It was bittersweet for Smith, who made the decision to leave the long-running NBC soap opera a month ago, and has since completed his time in Salem.  Smith’s speech was a highlight of the night when he thanked the LGBT community for their support of his performance of the first openly gay character on DAYS in the series’ 50-year history.  Amelia Heinle made it a two-peat winning the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as the grieving Victoria Newman on The Young and the Restless.  Heinle’s reels from her Emmy-winning performances have been centered on the death of little Delia, and the ramifications of her sudden death, and remembering her a year later on the anniversary of that horrific night.  Amelia’s castmate also made it two in a row, when Hunter King picked up her second straight Daytime Emmy for her role as Summer Newman.

On-Air On-Soaps was backstage at the One-On-One Winners Walk, where we were able to interview and spend some time with the night’s big winners!  From their initial reactions to their victory, to sharing some very emotional and heartfelt moments with us, it was exciting times for these newly crowned Emmy champs in 2015!  Check our chats and special moments with 42nd annual Daytime Emmy winners: Anthony Geary, Maura West, Amelia Heinle, Chad Duell, Freddie Smith, Hunter King, Ken Corday and his cast from DAYS, Jill Farren Phelps and her cast from Y&R, Brad Bell and his writing team from B&B, Nancy O’Dell, Kevin Frazier and Brad Bessey from Entertainment Tonight, plus other notables backstage including: Y&R’s Gina Tognoni, Marie Osmond, and many more!
