DAYTIME EMMY NOMS: Who got snubbed? Who got in!

The Good: Tamara Braun was nominated for her work as whack-job Ava on “DAYS” and not in the debauched role of Reese on “AMC”. Susan Haskell, Debbi Morgan, and Jeanne Cooper took their rightful places in the Outstanding Lead Actress category. Thorsten Kaye and Christian LeBlanc took their rightful places in the Outstanding Lead Actor category. Van Hansis and Bradford Anderson made to the big time in the Outstanding Supporting Actor categories.

The Bad: Where do I begin? What happened to the two shows that most rocked my soap world and many others in the past soap season? I am talking about the incredible “Y&R” and the ever-dark ever-stunning “OLTL”! I was shocked and saddened not to see their work honored with a Drama Series nod. Not even writing or directing for long-time Emmy darling, “Y&R”? My have the times changed. First, no major network (who has soap operas as part of their line-up) decides to air the Emmys and then the two top shows of the year are out of the big competition. At least “OLTL” got writing and directing nods, but where is Drama Series nod? Of the THREE nominees, here is what we can tell you: “DAYS” submitted the episode where Salem’s most beloved citizens are involved in a plane crash and the show fades to black. “B&B” got its nod by delivering two back to back episodes where Storm commits suicide and Katie gets his heart, and “AMC” this year has become the new Emmy ‘darling’ leading the pack with 19 nominations.

Did I not saying I would throw a fit if Kristen Alderson did not get nominated for an Emmy for her leading role as Starr Manning on One Life? Well, things are flying in my office right now! This I do not understand for the life of me! What does a young actress have to do in this town to get an Emmy nomination?? Don’t answer that. And how about Crystal Chappell who has done some of the most incredible work of her career as Olivia and one half of soap super couple, Otalia?

And now lets take a gander through each of the major soap categories and tell you who I felt was the “Glaring Omissions”- those who didn’t make the cut, and who provided us with ...“Shock and Awe” for even making it into the final pact!

Hi, Michael

Just read your article about the Emmy nominations, and really, I am not all that surprised that Y&R was not nominated for Outstanding Drama Series or Best Writing Team. This soap does NOT (and I stress that very highly) deserve these nominations at all this year.

When Maria Arena Bell was first brought in as the new head writer, I had high hopes that she would clean up the mess that Lynn Marie Latham made. Boy, was I wrong. Instead of making it better, she just went and made it worse. Of course, it did not help that I read in an interview excerpt that MAB planned to expand on LML’s stuff and make it better, instead of just merely throwing it out. This was a terrible mistake on her part. For the way this show has been going the past eighteen months, she might as well have just sat around and picked her nose the whole time she was there.

Where do I begin? How about that overhyped disaster of a storyline called Les Feux D’Amour, set in Paris. The Y&R head honchos submitted THIS storyline to the committee, the biggest mistake ever made since the late NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle decided to go ahead with Sunday football two days after the Kennedy assassination! This was nothing more than a crappy attempt to promote a disgusting Shick reunion that will only end in a disaster worse than last year’s earthquake in China if this goes through. You’d have to be blind, deaf, dumb and stupid if you think that reuniting with Nick will smarten Sharon up so she and Nick live happily and cheat-free ever after. Don’t even get me started on how they’re like Romeo and Juliet; need I remind you how THAT turned out?! Since then, Phyllis has been used as a tool to pimp Shick up, getting the hopes of the fanbases up, and igniting World War III on the public message boards (CBS, Sony, etc.) as Nick plays both Phyllis and Sharon, telling Phyllis he loves her, then going to Sharon and doing the Bedroom Bossa Nova in a filthy cabin, because she wants his help in controlling Noah, and she doesn’t know what to do with her life. I half-expected her just up and flew to New Orleans or some damn where, while Noah fell through the ice the night Brad died. Why don’t both women just tell Nick off and be done with it? I especially think it’s high time that Phyllis divorce Nick, get Summer and Restless Style in the proceedings, demand child support, and move on from his womanizing ass. Then, after she lived independently for six months to a year, (which we all know she can do) she needs to come back with a sexy, older hunk who can best both Jack and Nick in looks, charm and class, and can treat Phyllis like the lady she is.

Despite Michelle Stafford’s awesome acting talents shining in the past weeks, it is hardly fair to her fans that her character gets ruined just because Sharon Case wants revenge for the way she was treated during Latham’s reign. Michelle Stafford’s talent was what won her the “lead actress” position to begin with, and Sharon Case let her jealousies and issues get all supreme. Instead of telling Ms. Case to, “suck it up, princess”, Maria Arena Bell sympathized with her, told her “there, there, it’s okay,” and began to cater to her Titanic-sized ego, along with those of Eric Braeden and Jeanne Cooper (though I must say, Jeanne is the classiest of the three.) As a result, the true talents of a superb actress are being wasted. If Nick’s upcoming decision to leave Phyllis is laying way for Michelle’s exit from the show, then I honestly can’t say I blame her. She is clearly being punished for being all buddy-buddy with Latham and she deserves better. I want to wish her all the luck in her future endeavors. Then, when Nick and SharHo are reunited, watch as the ratings fall like the bomb on Hiroshima when Shick endures round two of lying, cheating, finger-pointing, accusations, suspicions, “woe is me” tirades and revenge sex. Y&R is going down the toilet fast, and we clearly have Sharon Case/Sharon Abbott to blame (although she’ll never admit that.)

Speaking of SharHo, how interesting is it that she’s in ANOTHER “Who’s the Daddy” storyline as she sluts around with Nick, Jack and Billy, gets herself pregnant and has no idea who the Daddy is? Jack being pussy whipped around Sharon is n=minimal compared to this. Assuming the show makes it to the February or May sweeps in 2010, I highly anticipate a guest appearance from Maury Povich, whose show is famous for paternity tests. Although I will give MAB snaps for portraying SharHo as the slut she is. But it’s not just Sharon. How about Ashley returning to town only to land in Victor’s arms, instead of helping Jack reclaim the family business, Jabot? Why should Jack and Billy do all the work? And how about Chloe stalking Billy after she stole Cane from Lily, just because she has a baby by him. Speaking of babies, Ashley is pregnant and going crazy as she hears the voice of Sabrina (another ghost story; come on, this isn’t the horror movie that it looks like, and more on the crazy storyline later), Lily lost one baby and is presumed to try getting pregnant again, not to mention the aforementioned pregnancy from Sharon. Also, in the time MAB was on the show, we’ve had one wedding after another: Victoria and JT, Victor and Sabrina, Gloria and Jeff, Jana and Kevin, Neil and Karen, Roger and Esther, Billy and Chloe, Kay and Murphy, and Lily and Cane. This show pimps out pregnancies and weddings more than the related reality shows on the Estrogen Network!!!

Finally, there is the issue with the “lose your mind” storyline. Ashley is a good example as she hears Sabrina’s voice in the Newman ranch and deals with a pregnancy as the same time. But the more credible example is Kevin and that damn chipmunk voice. Whose idea was it that he dress up in a chipmunk head anyway? No wonder he (and the rest of us viewers) have to put up with that damn annoying voice! Tragically, this came at a time when I thought the Kay/Marge kidnapping storyline had been over and done with. Of course, why did the writers have Gloria tell the journalist that Kevin was abused as a child? Didn’t she and the other writers know that Cliff Radisson would take advantage of this when they created him, given HIS character? What a horrible cliffhanger to throw in. I really wanted to feel for Kevin, but that damn chipmunk began to make it impossible for me. Don’t get me started on SharHo’s crazy tirade. I half expected her to pull a Britney Spears and shave that stringy hair off. I was even rooting for the writers to make her commit suicide!

Lastly, there’s Neil and the Winters family. It was bad enough that Lily and Cane went on as follows with Christel Khalil in the role, dumbing Lily down to have the maturity of a Miley Cyrus/Jonas Brothers groupie. However, a lot of people were upset that MAB had Neil cheat on Karen with Tyra, and then have viewers be tortured with Ana’s singing. (I, however, am in the minority; I think Ana is a terrific singer, and this was what made me root for them.) Many of other viewers wish Tyra would just go away and take Ana with her. Now, we have Tyra’s Aunt Virginia coming to town and telling her she may not be Devon’s aunt. Where the hell is this storyline going?

This is a serious lack of creativity. I know if I pulled off the crap all the time while studying creative writing, I’d flunk out of the course. Makes me wonder what MAB and her crew actually studied in college themselves! I’ll bet most of the writers studied Business Administration instead of English Literature.

There are some other problems that Maria Arena Bell has caused with the show, including Heather and Adam. But I think you get the idea as to why Y&R does not deserve the nominations it has been used to getting for years. Continuing from last post: There are some other problems that Maria Arena Bell has caused with the show, including Heather and Adam. But I think you get the idea as to why Y&R does not deserve the nominations it has been used to getting for years. Right now, only Kay and Murphy, and the presence of Phyllis are what is keeping the long-time fans in tact. Myself included, though I’ve been watching full-time for 2½ years. But I don’t know how much longer I’m going to last if TPTB don’t do something about this. Perhaps being snubbed at the Emmy’s will be the much-needed kick in the head for them to do a MAJOR HOUSECLEANING. Maria Arena Bell, Hogan Sheffer and Paul Rauch all need to be fired, and all this crap needs to be gone from the show, so the show can reclaim the class it once had, while adapting to modern times.

It is clear that MAB is writing to appease the younger “teenybopper” fanbase, while ignoring the long-time viewers who have watched since the 70’s and 80’s. It’s obvious that Bell cannot write for all fanbases, doesn’t know how, and doesn’t want to learn. We a head writer and executive producer who knows the history of the show, and can write for everyone.

I’m sorry for the novel, but I just had to explain everything that has been wrong with Y&R, and why the Emmy nomination committee was fair in their judgement. I couldn’t agree with them more if I was the one in charge.

I actually think Y&R should have gotten a nomination for best writing time and best soap. They have been the #1 soap for years so for that reason only they should have been nominated. As for why they didn't get the nomination; I think it had alot to do with running storylines too long. The Chloe tricking Cane SL lasted much too long. Most viewers hated the story and it ended with a fizzle. The storylines appear to be recycled from old Y&R scripts, Days of our lives, As the world turns and Guiding Light. Just looks like a lot of plot points and no serious drama. Some cahracters are over worked like the character Billy and the old characters you never really see. There doesn't seem to be a balance with the soap right now.

AngelinaH,
Why should Y&R get a nomination just because they've been #1 for years? If they ain't bringing it, they ain't bringing it, and don't deserve it. Y&R has, and has had some of the most outstanding actors in daytime. If they can't write for them and make it work, they just can't write.
Case in point, Vincent Irizarry. I have loved this actor since he first graced my screen on Guiding Light. Y&R gave him crap, PERIOD.
I was ecstatic that he went back to AMC. He hit the ground running on day one and hasn't faltered a single step since. He richly deserves his nomination and I hope he wins.
In my opinion AMC also deserves their nominations. I watch that before Y&R these days. Maybe this will be a wake up call for MAB, but I doubt it.
