252 May 1st, 2014 41st Annual Daytime Emmy Nominations Announced!

Nominations were announced this morning by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) for this year’s 41st Annual Daytime Emmys! Good Morning America made the announcement of some of the major categories.

However for soap fans, it was The Young and the Restless who scored the most nominations of all shows with 26 followed by The Bold and the Beautiful with 18,  and in a shocker, ABC’s General Hospital failed to garner nominations in the Outstanding Drama Series, Writing and Directing categories. However, Prospect Park’s reboot of One Life to Live made history becoming the first online soap opera to land a nomination in the Outstanding Drama Series category! CBS was the network with the most Emmy tally when all the nominations were said and done with 61!

The ceremonies for the 41st annual Daytime Emmys will be held on June 22nd at the Beverly Hilton, while the Creative Arts awards will be handed out on June 2oth.  NATAS has also said that if the Daytime Emmys cannot lock in a television broadcaster, it will stream the ceremonies online.  Here now are the nominees in all of the Daytime Drama categories.  Congratulations to all!

I have to say that GH should not be on there and I am happy they are not. there is nothing on GH thats makes sense nor do they ever end a s/l, mosy everything is recycle and its gross! We have no true couple to cheer for because they have no chemistry. Its people thrown together because RC/FV think they are hot, and frankly I don’t hink they know to much about man and woman chemistry appeal.GH have good actors/actresses, but they have actresses dumby down for men, and thats not what women are about today. There is no action with actresses we know can do action, to me is just the mess that was once OLTL, under a new name GH!

    ginger replied

They seem to be punishing GH’s excellent team of Frank Valenti and Ron Carlavati for turning this stinker of a show 360 degrees around. GH is the only soap I care about and will continue to be – IMO Y&R is a tired old, old, granny soap that moves with the pace of a turtle. How man times will that old goat marry his ex wife? Talk about recycled stories. And Steve Burton? What a farce – he’s nothing but a so-so actor – always has been always will be. GH is superbly written, staged, paced, the stories are interesting and humor abounds! Even my brother is hooked and it’s not for any reason but the writing. I don’t understand why people bash GH – it’s far superior to any soap on the air today. This just proves how ridiculous these awards are – how much do you want to bet they will be aired by CBS? For those who bash GH – please just stop watching – ABC is looking for reasons to get rid of it and YOU AREN’T HELPING THE CAUSE OF SOAPS AT ALL.

    JKH replied

You nominate Steve Burton over Michael Muhney? Burton did better acting saying nothing on GH. Wow some of the actors/actresses nominated are some of the worst actors on soaps. The nominating process leaves a lot to be desired.

I just cannot believe General Hospital was NOT nominated for Best Show and Best Writing! It is totally ridiculous! GH is 10 times better than Y&R and I used to be a Y&R fan. These omissions make no sense! They are going to nominate OLTL and not GH???

    Reply

    Elizabeth replied

Can’t say whether or not GH is better than Y&R but under this EP/HW it is a sad parody of what it used to be. The show used to be iconic (thus the multiple Emmys year after year) and now it should be shown on Saturday mornings and replayed plot point by plot point in morse code. No character development, just one outrageous reveal after the next, until we are reduced to watching enemies have hate sex on top of the crypt of a person they just killed. The show deserved to be left out, period.

    CHH replied

There is no soap on television today that even can compare to GH. The writing, directing and actors are superb. Y&R & B&B are no longer viewable they are SO bad. I am just gobsmacked at some of the choices . Is the nominating committee watching the same TV because I just don’t get it.

I can’t believe GH is not up for best drama or best writing. This totally sucks

    GH50 replied

Believe it. GH is terribly written and produced. There is no depth or emotion to the writing. It is all plot and the plots have more holes than swiss cheese and characters are dumbed to advance these terrible plots. The stories are all predictable and recycled baby switches, love triangles and cartoon villains running wild. Vets are pushed to the back and only trotted out on occasion to prop newbies. New character after new character introduced with no way or reason to want to connect to them and this need to put former OLTL actors front and center when their characters are terrible and their performances are lacking. And character after character written OOC to accomodate the stories and new characters.

Sean Kanan was right. Relish, Panic attacks,DVD’s, BLT’s, obnoxious children acting like adults, sophomoric jokes that amuse the writers, but no one else.

The writing is terrible and so is the production. The pacing and continuity are lacking and totally unprofessional. Cartini deserve this slap in the face. Their product is unwatchable. They don’t listen to the fans, maybe this will be a wake up call for ABC.

    jimh(leave it to beaver) replied

I agree…GH has good ideas but then they poorly write them…the death of A.J. was the worse thing to happen on this show!!!

    Christi replied

Very well said!!! The writers and producers of GH need to watch old GH at it’s best and takes notes and learn.. Sometimes I feel like they write as if they have never even really watched old GH, but maybe just read some recaps.. they write as if the didn’t or don’t even like old GH.. if that is the case, they are at the wrong show.

    RichCD replied

I hate to admit it, but you are right. GH is almost unwatchable right now. Cartini seemed to be on the right track for awhile, but since the OLTL character switches, it has gradually gone down hill. GH has traded heart and soul for campy ‘a-ha’ moments. Too bad.

    harry replied

Yes, GH50. Maybe this will be a wake up call and ABC will finally take some action and hire a reputable head writer who can do some serious damage control. I still believe this train wreck of a show can be saved but not under the tenure ship of the very arrogant and stubborn Ron Cartini.

    Kathie Simmons replied

ITA with you!You can only moke screen for a while. They came in and changed things an brought over 3 from OLTL and inserted them and make things that didn’t make sense. GH makes no sense, they have no s/l and once you get a answer to one question, thats followed by another. Why did they hired 2 people from a canceled soap to write for GH.Its not working and it haven’t worked. They make promised to actors and don’t keep them because ome of them think of something else dumb to do.They have actress on there they should never be fron burner and have nothing but hev triangles all the time. They already have Jerry Springer on, don’t need anyhmore of that.As for good ideals they have not.The problem is these 2 made a big mistake when they first too over GH, and they have fallen back into that OLTL mess. The anticipations of storylines are always better than the actual event.

    Kaleesi replied

Could it be the destruction of the Qs once again in favour of the mob hour? I think so.

    KM replied

I couldn’t agree more GH50. I think GH’s relatively small ratings bump had more to do with ABC axing 2/3 of their lineup than it did with Cartini’s brilliance. Unfortunately they seemed to believe their own press and think they could afford to thumb their noses at the audience with smoke and mirrors stunt returns that went nowhere as well as juvenile camp that seemed more geared toward entertaining themselves than the fans. I hope this snub provides a much needed reality check for them and ABC.

    Keith replied

GH has risen to be the best soap on TV. Everyday something major happens and you want to tune in the next day. It should have been nominated for Best Show and Best Writing.

    Trisha replied

I agree. The second it was announced that OLTL characters were coming to GH, many of us knew that the GH we watched for so long would be disappearing before our eyes. Now, we are living that nightmare. TPTB ignored every criticism and forged on with disrespect and ignorance as to what was the right thing to do FOR GH. Instead they only did FOR THEMSELVES. It’s no wonder GH did not get nominated..it is NOT GH anymore and that is the REAL TRAVESTY.

    curry-girl replied

    Agreed

    Timmm replied

Good points Karen. I just think that GH making it to 50 and seeing some of our beloved characters were enough to gander a nom. But, having said that, even when they had decent stories, they seemed to been written by Emma and Spencer!

    aria replied

i love GH always will no matter what, but i hope this is a good blow to RC and FV that while they do and are capable of producing a great show, more often then not the show is all scattered and overbloated. fans have place their concerns and have been ignore. the biggest complain was the show getting to cartoonish, but RC and his beg ego kept ignoring a large part of their audience. RC is the head writer, but he can’t write to just please himself, he got to balance the show and listen to the fans, cut the cartoon crap. on anoter note, i also feel like theres GH envy, although they haven’t beaten Yr bb in the ratings, they do get more press, plus also wontdering what show did they submit for emmy consideration? RC and FV have never been good at selecting shows, look at all the years they were on oltl and only won once, you can say all the crap you want about JFP but she at least knows how to submit shows that “win”. one thing for sure though, Us GH fans always have to take up the ass because the big shots listen when its to late…

    Reply

    W. R. replied

I agree that possibly the biggest problem with GH right now is RC’s arrogance. I have seen some of his responses on twitter and they show a marked disrespect for the audience and their opinions. The GH audience has been with the show a lot longer than he has and if they have concerns they should be taken seriously, not insulted and discounted. Even if they are critical and rude it’s not good form for him to respond the way he does. However my main issue with the current GH is the implausibility of the story lines. The most recent example is Sabrina giving birth on the side of the road to an 18 week premature baby. There was no real urgency in getting help for this baby. A baby that premature would not be able to breath on it’s own. On rare occasions a baby that premature would survive, but not without heroic efforts. When they finally got to the hospital there was more concern for the mother than for the baby. Sabrina was rushed into the ER and Patrick and Epiphany calmly rode up to the NICU(?) in the elevator discussing the situation as Patrick held a scrunched up blanket to his chest. Some effort should be made to make real situations at least appear real but the writers don’t even appear to try. I remember when the writers on soaps did research to make sure they made situations as realistic as possible. God forbid that much effort should be exerted today.

    JKH replied

Y&R and B&B are horrible horrible soaps. I can’t even watch anymore and I used to watch faithfully. General Hospital is the only watchable soap on TV although they need to reign in the evil Luke Spencer story line everything else is great.

    marjorie manford replied

The OLTL 3 have been shoved down our throats..Kiki has no chemistry with Michael. Seeing Luke trying to rape her is disgusting. Silas has no Chemistry with Sam. The Nina story is god awful. I am not surprised that GH didnt get any nominations in the best directing, writing.. becasue honestly that soap.. which is my fav of all time.. is all over the place.. stories are dropped for months and revisited after no one cares.. and then there are stories that drag out for months and months.. we see actors like once a month if that.. My opinion is that without the continuity of a story I would say they didnt deserve the nominations.

Laura Wright is either phoning it in lately, or trying to compensate by over acting so it is fair she wasn’t nominated wither. Even with its faults–and there were plenty–GH didn’t deserve a best writing or best show nomination any less than Y&R or B&B (can’t judge in regard to Days because I have barely watched it in the last year or so), and I think the nomination of OLTL for best show clinches it: somebody was out to send a message.

It’s one of the things I generally hate about these awards (Emmys, Grammys, Oscars): they’re political, so I can’t really take the results as seriously as I’d like to. I’m always happy when actors/actresses/writers/shows I admire win, but it detracts from the glory of winning when I know the process is tainted from the get-go. (And I’m talking about something separate from the fact that the process is procedurally problematic–you have people winning/losing based on a few shows out of a year of work. There’s that, and I hate that part too, but it’s also tainted by the introduction of political considerations.)

I agree that Emmys might be political. If GH was not nominated for best show because the judges didn’t think it was that’s fine but they shouldn’t let personal views come into the decision.Just like the fans the judges may have their favorites. However maybe the best revenge GH can get is to prove they are the best show around despite not been nominated and get everyone to work together.

GH didn’t deserve to win. The writing and quality of the show is terrible. The biggest joke it that Kelly Sullivan got in over Kimberly McCullough. Not the first time since it seems the academy has the usual pets with the acting categories. Will never forget the FA reveal where Kimberly killed the scenes and I remember reading everyone commenting how she would get it since she was excellent (even non fans said she was exceptional) yet she got ignored again. This is why these awards are a joke. First with only 4 soaps and then with the voters choosing the same friends year after year.

Congrats to DOOL, Y&R, B&B (didn’t watch the newer OLTL ) they deserve to be nominated since they are a real soap opera unlike what TIIC did to GH. TIIC ruined GH that many fans knew and loved. It barely resembles GH unless your new and never watched. TIIC push certain characters who are the writers pets and at the expense of legacy characters and vets. You don’t ruin a legacy character who grew up on GH and give everything she was to their pet who couldn’t make it on her own.

  32. tenblde says:

I am not surprised that GH did not get a nomination for writing, directing, and best show. The show may have gone up in the ratings but the storylines and writing is a ploy —- bring on the vets and then write horrible storylines that make them look bad and then dismiss them so they are upset — Jack Wagner, Gene Francis, Kimberly McCullough, Tristan Rogers (these are icons of GH and the soap industry). They may act like Cartini is terrific but we longtime fans know how they feel. Cartini uses these vets as fillers for promoting his newbies that no one cares about.

The writing is inconsistent, the storylines don’t mess and the conversations between characters that the fans want to see never get written — they happen offscreen. The writing is plot point driven and not character driven — that is why there are even less nominations for acting then years before. No FH, TG, MB — all who are the best actors in the business.

Also in the industry Frank is known as a micro-manager in the directing and this was a comment from the industry that they don’t like that.

Furthermore, Frank admitted that they submitted the nurses ball as the scenes for the show — something that was campy and not liked by many people because it wasn’t as good as the ones in the 1990s — when GH won 6 best show Emmys under Wendy Riche. Frank also admitted helping KMc pick out her scenes for the nomination and she of course didn’t get a nomination — even though she has been getting great reviews for her return from the magazines — obviously because Cartini can’t tell the good from the bad.

I agree that is a slap in the face to GH and how it is not respected in the industry and maybe changes need to happen.

I would be less than honest if I said I was disappointed that GH wasn’t on the ballot for Best Drama and Best Writing. Directing can be a toss up, but In the end, FV and RC have no one to blame but themselves for the poor showing in the other two categories that GH was left out of.

When we can all look at the Emmy’s as a drunken night of celebrities self aggrandizing themselves, an immature popularity contest, and an outdated political brouhaha, then we can put them in perspective. I am thrilled that GH did not get a nomination because I don’t want Cartini to be validated into thinking that what they are doing to the show is working. Finola Hughes and other actors definitely should have been nominated though. Katherine Kelly Lang scoring a nomination over Finola is just preposterous. I am glad to see the online shows got some nods. That lends their efforts some credence. Daniel Polo? Really? He was on for like 6 episodes in 2013. Love that Arianne Z was finally given her due, she makes any story work, no matter how poorly written. Casey Moss was far and away the best younger actor on soaps. May I ask…what does Scott Clifton do to get nominated in the Supporting category? When be was an awkward teen his goofy charm worked but as a man, it falls flat and is repetitive and pointless. I’m sorry, I may be in the minority, but the Daytime Emmys seem to me to be ridiculous. An actor or actress is judged to be the best of all simply going by the judgement of one submitted scene? Really? I realize there has to be limits, but I just don’t believe that anyone can be called the “best” based on one scene. An actor or actress can be so so all year long, but just happens to submit one scene that they were pretty good in, and they get it above all? Like wise an actor can work their butt off doing excellent work, but then the scene they submitted just didn’t quite hit the mark that one time, and that’s how they are judged for the whole year? Sorry, I just don’t get it. JMO.

    Mary SF replied

One of the reasons all award shows changed the word “best” to “outstanding” was to get rid of the notion that these awards are a competition to determine who is better than the other. All these industry awards are supposed to be about honoring outstanding work as judged by a panel of their peers, who have knowledge of the craft, who are fit to judge– unfortunately as noble as that goal is most award shows become about voting for your buddies–or network.

As for the method —in the soap world the performances are weeded down to a few minutes because it would be impossible for all the Academy members to watch every single scene, every actor, in every category, and that is why it is judged only on the reels that actor wants them to consider.

It is frustrating system but there is only one real winner and that is viewers because we get to enjoy and be entertained by a group of talented people everyday. Most fans have forgotten who won what emmy in what year for what performance, but every soap fan has a story, a scene, a performance that they remember all their lives, even when the soap is off the air.

For a true artist that is the award they want and the “best” legacy of their creative process. So if the actor you wanted on this list didn’t make it, if they touched your life then they already won and are the best at what they do.

I’ve given FV and RC credit the first couple of months of their new regime , because GH started to snap crackle and pop again- the writing was character driven, reveals and storylines were not dragged out, histories were coming to the fore and we got to see some vets on the canvas again. Sadly, that jumpstart and move upwards landed real bad-for me GH has become a show barely watchable sans benefit of fast forward a la d v r. The actors,(who are the show’s only saving grace) whether seasoned or newbies, seem bored and disconnected frequently, which despite their acting skills, sometimes makes for lackluster, unmemorable performances . No surprise that as a result of the terrible writing and production, GH didn’t get nominated for outstanding drama series. I’m still hoping another group will take over the helm, but it may be time for this loyalist to change networks.

I agree. The show started off very well. Last year was some of the best work done in a long time. Everyone had a storyline, and new people were connected to veteran actors. They deserved all the praise they got. This year? Not so much. From Heather/Carly/Franco kidnapping to destroying the Q’s and building the Westbourne family in their place, this show isn’t what it used to be. I honestly don’t recognize it anymore.

It’s sad that I’m hearing the word “politics” because I know every other award show is, and I guess I didn’t want to hear that around the Daytime Emmy’s but once I learned the process of a four-minute tape to judge an entire year on, you wonder if the people past and present deserved to win.

No GH as best show??? Kristen Alderson? REALLY??? I wish she’d leave. Kelly Sullivan gets a nod and yet GH fires her and keeps boisterous and annoying Lisa LoCicero instead? Exactly!! LAME.

My votes goto Jason Thompson and Chandler Massey, other than that, I’m not terribly impressed with the nominations.

I am so happy that OLTL is in the running for best dramatic series. It had a bumpy start, but then it was getting into its groove by the end of its run. Kelly Missal also did a great job. I tried to watch GH several times after OLTL was cancelled, but could not get into it at all. I did not like the actors, characters, and the writing. Good Luck, OLTL!

I so agree about OLTL. It was just getting really good by starting to tie together the Todd and Victor mystery with the circular tattoo people going after Clint. And seeing Allison Perkins in the final scene was wonderful. I too enjoyed Kelly Missal as the young adult Dani. How I miss my beloved OLTL.

Congratulations to all the nominees. I was sorry to see that Michael Muhney had removed his name from the list though. All transgressions aside, he was definitely one of the lead runners in my book. His acting ability was beyond question, all else will be determined at a later date. Is this another Pete Rose type of thing, where all the good works of an individual are not to be rewarded. I thought we were all human and committed sins everyday. I am not condoning what was done, but the field is acting and not outside behavior.

I agree there should be more categories in the acting segment because lead and supporting roles on a soap are very vague. In a movie the lead is the main character the focus of the story, but on a soap that changes all the time. I think Categories based on length of time one played that role, such as Outstanding Performance by a Veteran ( playing the role for more than 10 years) or Outstanding Performance by a Newcomer (playing the role for less than two years) might be more fitting for daytime.

Would love to see Arianne Zucker win. She is consistently good in whatever role she portrays – she can be tough, angry, vulnerable, sweet, mean, loving, kind, funny, hurt, n pain, etc., and she is always right on. She is a good actress. One of the best in soaps.
I think Eric Martsolf is good too. He also has portrayed a rangen of personalities, emotions, etc. He can be a good boy or bad boy equally well. I love Eileen Davidson, and think she is terrific, but in this category, I would like to see Arianne win just because she has really displayed quite a range on Days for many years. Surprised that James Scott and Allison Sweeney were not at least nominated. They are very entertaining, and do draw some of us in. OK – they may be melodramatic, but hey, that is what the soaps are about.

I love Kristen, Roger, and Michael on G.H. All three have contributed to the show in exciting ways. I do agree there are too many characters, but honestly I don’t know who I would like to see go! Just when a story begins to get stale, there is a switch to a character that hasn’t been seen in a while and it’s all fresh again. I think a lot of great actors were overlooked this year…

    Finola Hughes
    Kathleen Gati
    Maura West
    Tristan Rogers
    Ian Buchanan
    Robin Matson

I wish there was a Special Guest category, it was great to see Ilene Kristen as Delia Coleridge! LOL! Always, love seeing her!

As For OLTL… I will always love LLanview and miss the characters. The Online Network didn’t do it justice, but the acting was as good as it could be under difficult real life circumstances. The final scenes between Blair and Todd were wonderful… heartbreaking as only they could do! Blair and Tea’s scenes were perfect! Frenemies, that never let each other down. Kassie DePaiva and Florencia Lozano both deserved nominations! As did the amazing Erica Slezak!

I wish things were different, but yeah, they are gone for good this time.

Well,,if Billy Miller wins at least he won’t have Scott Clifton able to hog the spotlight since they are in different categories this year.

Ari Zucker is consistently good and shame that she has to go up against Eileen Davidson because I think most people feel ED has a slam dunk for the award. Unless Heather “Cry Me a River” Tom pulls out another win. I don’t get her popularity. Saw her performances on Y&R, OLTL and B& and she is not all that…sorry.

I think Casey Moss has greatly improved since coming on DOOL but I can see his not getting a nomination for last year. Next year he definitely should get a nod. And, Daniel Polo? Seriously? He was a blip on the radar. Chad Duell is boring and Bryan Craig just not that great….he always looks confused. As much as I thought Massey was wonderful in the past he phoned it in his last year on the show.

GH is so all over the map that they did not deserve a nomination. DOOL has had great writing, great acting and for the most part decent stories (although I could do without Daniel/Jennifer). Jen Lilly should have gotten some recognition. She brings so much to the character of Theresa….nasty yet vulnerable.

Best Drama Series- Winner: Days of our Lives.

Lead Actor: This is a complete and utter joke on all levels. JS and MS snubbed for CLB and DD? CLB is a supporting actor and DD was basically a recurring player last year while JS and MB are the leading men on their soaps and a had great solid years. This is one of the many reasons the daytime emmy’s have lost all cred when non leads get nominated over real leads. Winner: BM in a close one over JT.

Lead Actress: They can’t add a 5th and 6th spot so MW and FH can get what they deserve which is a nomination? I have no issue with the four actress selected but this category is so strong you need to have more than just four. Winner: HT will get it but ED should get it.

Supporting Actress: Much deserved and well earned nominations for EH and JE. They have always made the most out of the least they get from the writers, unlike some of the other nominees in the two supporting categories, who do the least with the most they get from the writer. Winners: EH in a close one over JE but KS is a legit darkhorse.

Supporting Actor: This award should go to BA who had the best 2013 out of the other four nominees and showed that he can play anything. Winner: SC will get it and I will be angry but BA should get it.

Younger Actress: Winner: LG from B&B.

Younger Actor: Winner: CD from GH.

I agree with so many of the responses re GH. It DID NOT deserve a nomination as best drama or best writer.
And the actors must really be demoralized with the pap they are given. And the destruction of the whole GH structure with the families, characters, and storylines deserves some kind of WORST award. The blithe disregard of fans and their loyalties is criminal.
No music, no set up of scenes, no continuity, no emotion, etc.

Someone upthread got it right, CBS controls the voting block and therefore determined who would get shut out. They must consider GH to be their biggest rival, therefore they voted en mass for one of the Prospect park shows. I am not surprised that GH has not been nominated for a daytime Emmy. The show appears to be out of placed, unorganized with too many characters on the scene. Then you have children involved in love triangles. What is the purpose of it? GH has an awesome cast of actors/actresses. All they need is good writing that focus on the history of the show. Why focus on children instead of veterans who made the show? This does not make sense to me. There are too many forced relationships with characters that just do not have any chemistry. This has been going on for years. Why force characters together that have absolute no chemistry and expect me to watch it? Not going to happen. Why bring back actors, destroy their characters, their history, and get rid of them or kill them off in a blink of an eye. Why bring them back in the first place to do that? I hope the show gets better. I hope the writing improves. The only nomination I believe that GH deserves is the save from cancellation award.

The Disney pwincess ,nothing about aids just unprotected sex pregnancy ????The NB pushed everything that put you in danger of HIV. Plus temper tantrum Ron writing OLTL 2 didn’t help. So far this year won’t help them next year unless they listen to the actual viewers.

The nominating committee can only weigh their decision on one or 2 episodes that a soap or an actor submits and not by the whole year.Plus any personal views that the judges have should be kept out of their decision making. If GH was not one of the best soaps last year that’s fine but i don’t find out later that the one or more of the judges had a personal grudge against RC and/or FV and that’s why GH didn’t get a nomination for best show, directing or writing.Plus maybe RC and FV don’t care that much if they themselves get nominated because they may know winning an Emmy for what you did last year doesn’t guarantee job security in the present or in the future.I’m sure Ron and Frank are happy that some of the actors got nominated and probably hope they win but that might be as far as their excitement goes regarding the Emmys.Plus at the end of the day maybe GH knows the only ones who really count are what the viewers and the network thinks and not just a few people on a committee.
