Courtesy/NATAS

The race is on for this years Daytime Emmys with the announcement this morning of the actors in the Daytime Drama Series categories who scored ‘Pre-Nominations’ and will move on to the final round of voting!

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) in cooperation with The Television Academy (ATAS), put out the official release which held the list of performers who will vie for a nomination for the upcoming 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

The process used to determine those chosen as Pre-Nominated performers is as follows:  An online judging ballot containing all entrants in each of four performer categories (Lead Actor and Actress and Supporting Actor and Actress) was sent to all registered, eligible peer judges.  The ballot contained a randomized order of performers in each category, regardless of their show affiliation.  Judges were required to view clips online containing the work of each performer entry before selecting their top 10 performer choices in each category.  Please note that there are 11 Lead Actors and 11 Supporting Actresses due to exact ties in the voting.  Th announcement also contains the names of the Entrants for Younger Actor and Actress, who will proceed directly to the Blue Ribbon Round.

Ballots were submitted directly to Lutz & Carr, an independent accounting firm, who tabulated the results.  The candidates below who received the highest number of votes now advance to the blue ribbon screening round, scheduled to begin on February 24, 2015, which will determine both nominees and recipients.  All final nominations will be announced on Thursday, March 26th.

Here are this year’s Daytime Drama Performer Pre-Nominations.  Congrats to all!

SHARON CASE was dissed again!!!!!!! Okay now Im officially done with The Young and The Restless. Sharon Case works her butt off. Sharon is given such harsh backlash and and bashed on the show. All the rest of GC people are never bashed like Sharon Newman. Okay done

But did Sharon submit? I know many years she hasn’t. Perhaps Michael can find out if she even submitted.

Im sure Sharon did submitt. I am in shock she was not nominated. She is the hardest working women on the show and this poor character is given the worst writing.

    Mark Y. replied

you’re a big fan of Sharon/Sharon, right? and you’re pissed she didn’t get a pre-nom, right? so you’re going to stop watching?!

Don’t you worry about Ms. Case she is loved and respected by many. Darling it is all politics and Ms. Case does not jump in the middle of the mess they call this show! The Emmys are a complete joke and everybody who knows anything understands that I am laughing at the pre-noms. Same old tired actors with their little games. She is not there because she chose to not jump on the band wagon and stick her nose in the middle of a rumor. God Bless her!

I think that speaks volumes for our sharon Case

    Laurie replied

Yes, because clearly Sage’s 3 lines made a bigger impact this past year than Sharon. Um…

I guess if you don’t want to know what happens on Thursday’s Y&R stop here! Even though I’m a Y&R newbie, nothing disgusts me more than this Sharon custody sl. Not even the Hilary & Devon sl.. Y&R showed Sharon take all the strong, smart steps: obtained a good lawyer, got a job even though she didn’t need to, remained reasonable, continued her meds, while Nick did zip. O. Nothing. He lounged around in the woods in a bear trap, trying to “find” himself. If he’s that lost maybe he should back off Sharon. He entertained Sage while his daughter played alone upstairs. Yet all of this past year’s storyline was skipped in court: Faith running away from Nick, Victor’s gaslighting, how Nick thought Sharon was so great as a mother that he had her at the alter just hrs before he filed for full-custody, Nick running off to the woods to feel sorry for himself, how he lied about Summer’s paternity test for 18 yrs or so. What was the point of all of that just for Nick to win custody? It seems as if Chuck Pratt came along & flipped the sl from it’s original intent. There’s no way Sharon would lose custody. These writers seem to have no idea how disgusting & offensive this sl is. I want all remaining soaps to survive, but I hope Y&R takes a colossal ratings dive over this sl. Now poor Phyllis is the victim, Big Daddy Vic has free reign over her & strolls in & out of the mental facility as he pleases because he’s God & Sharon’s the devil. Just ridiculous!

Not much has changed…Victor will always be Victor, no matter what. I smell a rat already. Amazing how Victor sold Chancellor just like that. Too easy. Victor the Dic-tator has something up his sleeve.

Yeah, I am just as baffled as you about Kelly Sullivan’s nom. She is a great actress, but too soon to be given consideration.
I believe only a handful are worthy of this award….some nominations do not make sense to me.

    Derrick replied

SC should have gotten a pre-nom for Lead Actress! Don’t know what it’ll take for her to get a nomination!

Every year people on this site expect a pre-nom and an actual nomination for Sharon Case.

And every year she is snubbed.

The academy is over her, folks. She hasn’t received a nomination in 11 years. She more than likely won’t ever see one ever again. It’s called “falling out of favor with your peers.”

I must say that I’m impressed with the amount of nominations Y&R has…………but Justin Hartley for Lead Actor??? He just started; he’s GOOD but NOT yet. The same with Gina Tognoni for Lead Actress in which she is EXCELLING in her role but not yet! Tracey Bregman is either a YES or NO for me! Kelly Sullivan should have NOT been nominated YET for Supporting Actress! Overall, like the list for Y&R. Where is Melody Thomas Scott????

B&B: I love and respect John McCook but NO…………He hasn’t done much for Lead Actor! Scott Clifton should have been Lead instead of Supporting but like Y&R, like the list. Jacob Young should have no problem winning Supporting Actor but it depends on what the others submit! Where is Don Diamont????

DAYS has POOR submission! Daniel Cosgrove for Lead Actor & Peggy McCay for Lead Actress, SERIOUSLY?? Chrishell Stause……!!!!????? Where is James Scott, Arianne Zuker???

@ Derrick – I’m not a viewer of Y&R, and yet I agree with you with the ‘NOT yet’ submissions for Justin Hartley, Gina Tognoni, and Kelly Sullivan. While I’m familiar with all of their work… didn’t those three actors all debut on Y&R, in the fall? For me that doesn’t warrant a full year’s worth to submit. It feels like JFP decided to throw in all three of her latest hits, just for the sake of it. Who knows, it may work. Billy Miller debuted on GH in the fall, too, but he didn’t submit for GH.

Adding to the not yet list is Michaell Stafford as Nina on GH. First, I am in the minority as I think she overacts and chews up all the scenery. Second, like the players listed above, she just started. Not yet indeed.

    Jeremy replied

@ harry – Michelle debuted on GH May 1st, then again at the start of June. She’s been on GH for 1/2 of 2014, whereas Justin, Gina & Kelly probably completed what… 2 months on Y&R, in 2014?

    Patrick replied

“didn’t they JUST start on the show?”

Everybody with an IQ of a baby knows what the JH pre -nom was about? Answer: for the show to stick it to MM once again. See here our new Adam is so great. He has not proven anything to me yet that he is even close to taking over the character of Adam. I guess we are all still in the first grade over there at Y&R. As for Kelly Sullivan she is another one of JFP’s pets. It really does not matter because TG owns the Lead and Finola Hughes will take supporting.

At the risk of offending people, as far as this show goes I don’t think anyone was left off.

  5. Jimmy says:

My guesses for who it will come down to:

Lead Actress: Maura West, Laura Wright and Alison Sweeney (all of whom are greatly deserving)

Lead Actor: Anthony Geary, Jason Thompson and Billy Miller (I hope JT takes it home finally)

Supporting Actress: Elizabeth Hendrickson, Kim Matula and Michelle Stafford (I feel like this is MS’ to lose)

Supporting Actor: Blake Berris, Chad Duell and Jacob Young (CD should definitely win)

Younger Actress: To be honest, I haven’t got a clue, they’re all mediocre.

Younger Actor: I think it’ll be between Bryan Craig and Freddie Smith

And for outstanding drama series, hopefully GH isn’t excluded this year like it was last year, because I think it is deserving of this win, GH was FIRE in 2014.

No, Camryn Grimes (Mariah) of Y&R deserves the outstanding younger actress Emmy.
Why, she’s so good she does not appear to be acting. Her personality seems natural–as if she is someone you’d not only meet in real life, but someone you’d like because they’re so honest, so cool and so cynical.
Yes, she’s self-protective because she doesn’t want to get hurt again. How do I know this? Because the actress shows us, she doesn’t tell us. Because she deserves it so much this can only mean the less deserving Hunter King (Summer) will get it because of her constant histrionics.

You got it right Harry it goes (Oh nobody likes me boo hoo, I just don’t think I can do it sniff sniff rub eyes), then the rest of the cast has to hug her while Chuck P tell’s her what a wonderful job she did whining again. and that calls for a pre-nom and a win.

    CeeCee replied

Absolutely, Harry. Camryn Grimes’s acting is effortless. I cannot understand what is so outstanding about Hunter King, as an actress.

Then, I was really thrown by Bryton James’s and Eric Martsolf’s nominations….and so many undeserving others. Really? I don’t get it.

  6. toscanti says:

I believe most of the nominees are deserving but there are a few nominated at Y&R that are a bit of a stretch. JFP must have her entire cast submit themselves. I still say she knows someone. Really wish she’d “Go Away”. Excited for GT as Nu Phyllis and JH as Nu Adam. Hope Billy Miller wins again to reiterate the mistake JFP made in letting him go. MS as “Nina” and MW as “Ava” GH had wonderful material.

You can take umbrage when the official nomination list comes out.
That said, would someone please hand Tristan Rogers some decent material?
This man can act up a storm! Plus he’s charismatic as all hell. But the writers seem determined to keep him acting like a low brow con artist. Not only that, he loses time and time again with his con artist endeavors. Maybe I am wrong to do so, but I cannot help but blame JFP.

I thought it was odd the baby stuff from GH (either baby) wasn’t here – maxie, spin, lulu, dante, brit, her mom… come to think of it not even that big story with Carly getting kidnapped and Franco saving her, and crazy Heather. She was kidnapped last January… would have thought at least that rescue with Heather and the cave in and the shooting of the man that came in and shooting Franco and all that jazz would have put them in the nomination list.

    Shay replied

@CeeCee….Your post reminded me of a character from the long-defunct “Santa Barbara”….his name was “Brick!” Perhaps that would have been a better moniker for “Dullen.” Certainly would have been befitting of SB’s “stone cold” persona, which he apparently took with him when he left Port Charles…..

  26. Mary SF says:

Okay call me crazy but how in hell did Chrishell S get a pre-nom for playing Jordan? And why is Peggy McCay in the Lead Actress slot– other than her speech at Will and Sonny’s wedding she has done nothing outstanding this year.

And it makes me cringe to see Justin H get a pre-nom for his work as Adam when he hasn’t done anything yet, while someone like James Scott who did some of his best work last year on Days isn’t even mentioned. The only explanation for such an injustice is James didn’t want to put his name in, which is a shame because his work was far more deserving than some on that list.

And the Younger Category should be changed because it is silly to see children competing with grown men and women. Those under 16 should have their own award or they should be excluded from the competition — one or the other.

Other than than that there are no real big shocks or omissions. Personally I just hope Alison Sweeney get sthe Lead Actress award, the rest I will have to see the final list and their reels before deciding my picks.

( I cannot believe Arianne Zucker was not nominated. She’s such a passionate actress…go figure.)
Let’s not forget the guys…..ANTHONY GEARY, Billy Miller, and Christian Leblanc. No one else fits the bill for me.

Pleasantly surprised Lisa LoCicero on GH made the cut-off in Supporting Actress category. She really is a bright light among a lot of gloom & doom in Port Charles. IMO Maurice Bernard had meatier scenes this year than Tyler Christopher, who made the Best Actor cut-off. Puzzling that Tony Geary, who was absent for half the year made the cut-off above Bernard. I don’t even like the Sonny character. But, really, Bernard played some intense, and funny, stuff this year. Also, Kristen Alderson is still in the “Younger Actress” category? Goodness, when will this lady graduate & be old enough for Supporting Actress?

More actors should take their cues from Candice Bergen, who declined additional nominations after she won her 5th Best Actress Emmy for MURPHY BROWN. Sometimes I think Meryl Streep should do the same considering she’s been nominated at least a total of 100 times for every single acting award on the planet. Streep even needs her own separate Wikipedia entry just for nominations and awards since it’s too long for her main biography. Yes, it’s nice to be acknowledged. But, at some point, talented people should stop needing validation that they are indeed talented.

right off the cuff : Lead Actress

    Peggy McKay : “Caroline Brady”
    Alison Sweeney: “Sami Brady”
    Maura West : Ava Jerome

clearly Maura is the front runner…. dang it tho… should not Alison be lauded for her tenure at DAYS

I adore Peggy McKay tender scenes with all her knowings…. Treasure

    TOUGH category : Lead Actor

Daniel Cosgrove : I’m so excited for him being here… he lends a mystique that’s sexiness

Tyler Christopher : if the writing forwards what’s going on with him currently… he’s leading his acting emmy worthy… he’s a lot of feature

Justin Hartley : he’s taken over Adam…. like Tyler , these two are IN from here on out

everyone else is mainstay repeat : is this in fact Anthony Geary swan song? if so… it’s a shoo-in…. after 7 emmys… i’d stand up and let another male lead accolade

best supporting actress : gosh darned it … i love

Finola Hughes and Michelle Stafford for the win
Kelly Sullivan from GH to Y&R and is lauded in everything she does … LOL Exciting

have to prop Amelia Heinle…. kudos to YOU

I hope Lisa Locicero gets in the final 5 : she has so much oomph and pizzaz with most of the menfolk in Port Charles…. Luke/Duke/Ned/Julian…

I”m happy to see Chrishelle Stause mentioned… the writing IS SO BAD… yet, when the camera captures her just right… you recall how wonderful she can be… think AMC

    outstanding supporting ACTOR :

weakest category : this is Eric Martsolf to win or lose

serial press sure has been star turning Jacob Young… so he’s the frontrunner ?

it’s great to see Blake Berris and Darin Brooks.

    outstanding YOUNGER Actress :

YES, and MORE yes ! Ciara Brady for the steal… and deserved WIN

    outstanding YOUNGER ACTOR:

It’s called “strategic nominating.” Actors work with their exec producers in deciding which category to place themselves. It’s not based solely on how much screen time or “A” storylines they are in. It’s based on who they will compete against, and if they stand a better chance of winning in a “lesser” category. Certain actors would never be nominated as supporting, no matter how small their screen time (Eric Braeden, Peter Bergman, Tony Geary, Maurice Bernard, etc.)

    Reply

    Jimmy replied

None of them deserve lead actor Emmys though, there are much better actors on B&B (as is being showcased now with the Rick/Maya/Ridge/Caroline story) and the story they had was just subpar. The kiddie sqaud has dominated B&B for the past few years and that’s not how the show should be. No select few actors should drive all the story on any particular show, no matter how small the cast is. With actors like Jacob Young, Heather Tom, Don Diamont, Thosten Kaye, Rena Sofer, Sean Kanan, etc. in the roster, they should be utilized way more! And let’s not forget John McCook and KKL (the latter of whom is always in story) but they need better story too, being the only remaining original cast members.

Unless neither submitted their name, which I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t. Those are the two glaring names missing.

Other than that, the other thing that stands out to me is they should really just change the name of these from The Emmy Awards to The Young and the Restless Awards. At least 4-5 people from Y&R in each category, including 6 in the Lead Actor category. They get 4 in the Supporting Actor category, GH gets 1. Yes, Roger Howarth is a glaring omission. Furthermore, Finola Hughes should be in the Lead category since she not only supported, but is a most central character on the show and drove storyline. There sure seems to be a lot of fluff and clutter pre-noms coming from CBS, specifically Y&R. I wish Sharon Case would pack her bags and return to GH as “presumed dead” Dawn Winthrop #2 and future #5. I’m sure Monica would appreciate having some family again.

In addition, where is DAYS Lauren Koslow’s pre-nom? Furthermore, if Tognoni, Sullivan, and Hartley can get pre-noms for the VERY limited screen time they had on Y&R, why isn’t Eileen Davidson getting one?

They are good actors, but if all of these Y&R newbies, Gina T., Kelly S, Justin H can be nominated after only their 1st 2 wks then Billy Miller can as well for his LAST 2 wks there! I hope he wins the whole category, though GH’s Jason T’s past due. Maurice Benard & James Scott are mysteriously missing but Tyler C. who walked around in a dull daze up until the last few weeks when he went dark is there? Odd. No Roger Howarth? Love Days Daniel Cosgrove!

I expected to see Maura, Finola, Nancy Lee, Alison & even Laura on this but am particularly thrilled with Michelle S after the bashing her & Nina fans have taken this past year! LOL. Lisa L must have submitted Olivia’s drunk dialing puppy adoption scenes w/Ned! Sharon Case is missing. Torn between Maura & Alison for Lead Actress though.

Has Days Theo & Y&R’s Reed even appeared on their shows for Best Younger Actor this past year? No GH’s Spencer Cassadine, who has practically had a leading role?!!! Still, it’s a toss-up between Casey M’s JJ, Freddie S’s Sonny on Days or Bryan C’s Morgan on GH. Yikes.

Y&R’s Jessica C & Steve B & Days Chrishell’s characters serve no purpose, their acting is bland & have no place on this list IMO.

But if you’re gonna talk about Michelle monopolizing the show, how can the same then not apply to the Kathleen, who brought us “The Krampus” and “Willkommen” at the Nurses Ball?

I’d say both women are excellent actresses with characters that do have an affinity for chewing scenery on occasion, or sometimes very often, lol. Shay replied

@Dan…..Thank you for your reply. I can understand your confusion when you analyze my statements regarding KG and MS…on the surface they may seem contradictory, but not from my perspective. While my beloved Dr. O. does occasionally have her day in the spotlight, and savors it for all it’s worth, one must remember that Ms. Gati is above all else, a “supporting actress” in every sense of the word. She began on GH in relative obscurity and in a small, VERY small, capacity, yet made such a positive impression upon Anthony Geary—and many others–that she was invited back again and again in tiny increments until she was revealed to be Britt’s mother and a vital part of the Cassadine crime machine. She also became a firm fan favorite for whom much clamoring began…we couldn’t get enough of our Liesl Obrecht and her cold calculating demeanor which surprisingly concealed a gargantuan musical/comical capability, not to mention a reserve of ironic warmth. If you added up all the screen time allotted to this versatile actress, I highly doubt one could actually validate the argument she has “monopolized” that much of the show…she simply makes her mark in a truly big and visible way whenever she is afforded the opportunity. Conversely, you have a well-known, daytime vet whose much-ballyhooed arrival onto the Port Charles canvas was in a role supposedly tailor-made for her “talents.” Day upon day we were force-fed the tale of the woebegone Nina and her tragic life ad nauseum….entire episodes were dominated by this leering lunatic and her ever unraveling image from fragile, recovering coma victim to prevaricating perpetrator….all in the hands of a horribly irritating performer whose overwrought trademark techniques became not just predictable, but perturbing, to witness. This continued for months on end, and at least for me, couldn’t wind down soon enough. Hence, I cannot see a credible comparison between these two women or the use of their characters. One is a gifted and charming thespian with personality to spare who cheerfully and skillfully takes on whatever material she is given and the other simply an entitled soap diva who swanned onto the GH soundstage and was handed a front burner storyline that instead of making a big bang, materialized with first a whimper, then a huge thud. For me, that connotes a huge difference.

For best actress the only obvious winner is Alison Sweeney for her amazing final year as Sami Brady DiMeara. She showed her chops this year. I was impressed because she usually overacts but this time she carried it home. Second in line is Maura West as Ava Jerome. This woman is flawless. Maybe a tie would be great. For best actor – simply put – Billy Miller deserves everything he is nominated for. There is not one actor in that category who has as much talent as Mr. Miller. If Billy doesn’t win, I believe Anthony Geary should take it home. He does amazing work in all the roles he has played in the Fluke/Luke storyline. For supporting actor my choice is Blake Berris as Nick Fallon. He did an amazing job. His portrayal of the pain this character had while doing the damage he did to the residents of Salem was beyond spectacular. If Blake doesn’t win then my second choice is Chad Duell as Michael Corinthos Quartermaine. His scenes when he discovered the deceptions were nothing short of brilliant but he does not remain consistent in his acting but he does deserve appreciation for the quality work he did during those scenes. For Supporting Actress my choice is Michelle Stafford as Nina Clay. She manages to convey the line of insanity and fragility so well. She is a welcome addition to the General Hospital cast and one worthy of recognition. Cady McClain is my second choice simply because she is just an amazing actress in whatever she takes on. For younger Actress my choice is Camryn Grimes as Mariah Copeland. That girl has acting chops. She is a natural. She is so underrated on this show. I want her to get what she really deserves for this role. She is amazing. Second choice is Camila Banus as Gabrielle Hernandez. She is a talented young lady and I miss her presence on Days. She gave an A1 performance and should be recognized if Camryn is not. For second choice my choice is Bryan Craig as Morgan Corinthos. He is also a stellar actor who steals every scene he is in with his intensity. He knows how to hold back when necessary and he knows how to let go when needed. My second choice is Max Ehrich as Fenmore Baldwin. He has displayed amazing range portraying a troubled teen with no idea what he wants to be as a human being. He watched his parents go through hell. He battled drug addiction and watched the one girl he loved treat him like crap. He is a talented young man. Very deserving. I like Freddie Smith but his range is so limited. He only acts angry all the time. I never see him let go and be honest in his role. I think he does his absolute best on the show but he is not the best by any means.

I’ve read great things about Camryn Grimes, maybe she’ll take the win, and I love Freddie Smith but he does seem to give safe performances.

Clearly, we all have our own opinions on the noms. The one thing we can all agree on is revamping that joke of the Daytime Emmy ‘show’ they did last year!! I have always loved daytime TV and to see those 4 stupid social media ‘experts’ was beyond trashy! Whatever they decide to do this year, please don’t repeat last year’s classless fiasco!

Rafe from GH should have been nominated for younger actor. GH has a lot of guys in this category but he deserves it as much as any of these nominees.

So much good acting on GH just not enough slots to go around.

How do they choose whether to go into lead or supporting. The academy needs better/ stricter rules because there is no rhyme or reason to it this year in particular. Eric Martsolf supporting on DAYS but Peggy McKay lead? Michelle Stafford supporting on GH but Tyler Christopher is lead? These don’t make any sense – in each case the “supporting” player had a ton more airtime and drove a ton more story than the”lead.” The categories should mean something.
