The 68th Primetime Emmy Award nominations were just announced Thursday morning in Los Angeles. The annual kudofest saluting the best of last TV season will be held live on Sunday night, September 18th at 7PMET/4PMPST on ABC.
Key nominations were scored this morning by a few notables from the world of the soaps; both daytime and primetime. Most exciting to longtime One Life to Live fans was the nomination for Judith Light (Ex-Karen) for her role as Shelly Pfefferman in the Amazon Prime series, Transparent. Light will compete in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category against: Niecy Nash Getting On, Alison Janney Mom, Kate McKinnon Saturday Night Live, Gaby Hoffman Transparent and Anna Chlumsky Veep. Of note: both Wright and Janney also appeared on soaps, Santa Barbara and Guiding Light, respectively.
In the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series category, Taraji P. Henson’s Cookie Lyon brings her recognition for her work in the sudsy Empire. Henson will compete against: Claire Danes Homeland,Viola Davis How To Get Away With Murder, Robin Wright House Of Cards, Tatiana Maslany Orphan Black, and Keri Russell The Americans.
Downton Abbey in its sixth and final season scored nominations in the major category of Outstanding Drama Series. The British period soap will compete against: Better Call Saul, Game Of Thrones, Homeland, House of Cards, Mr. Robot, and The Americans. Series icon Dame Maggie Smith, who played the Dowager Countess, also landed a nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actress Category in a Drama Series.
In addition, Patrika Darbo (Nancy, DAYS) also landed a nomination in the Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for her role in the online show, Acting Dead.
