104 May 21st, 2012 ABC Official Annoucement on Good Afternoon America Daytime Summer Replacement Series!

Courtesy/ABC

I am sure we were all envisioning a day when One Life to Live is back on the airwaves, in our heart of hearts.  But soap fans and viewers won’t be seeing that on ABC.   First, audiences had to deal with the OLTL’s disastrous replacement, The Revolution, which in turn was canned by the network because of horrendous ratings.  And now it is being replaced for the summer by the previously announced GMA in the Afternoon series.   So today, ABC made it official with a press release with details about the summer series.

Here’s the info:   “Beginning Monday, July 9, ABC News will air a one-hour extension of  Good Morning America for nine weeks entitled Good Afternoon America.  The program will be anchored by “GMA’s” Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer, with Sam Champion, Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos joining in with special appearances. The energetic, fast-paced program will feature the most-talked about celebrities, performances by the biggest names in the music industry, the latest pop culture news, plus original entertainment, lifestyle, health, workplace and consumer reporting from an all-star list of contributors and other members of the ABC family.

“It’s tremendous that ‘GMA’ has this opportunity to extend its reach and bring something new to the afternoons,” said co-anchor Josh Elliott. “It is gratifying to play a role in it, and we genuinely hope our audience will come along for the ride.” Co-anchor Lara Spencer added: “I am beyond excited and honored to be part of this new chapter for the Good Morning America family.  Good Afternoon America gives us the opportunity to reach a different audience, and better yet, to spend a little more time with our morning viewers who want to be a part of the conversation and fun we plan on bringing to afternoon TV.  Good Afternoon America will air from 2:00-3:00 p.m., ET and will be taped at “GMA’s” studio at the crossroads of the world, the heart of Times Square.”

All we can say soapers is make sure to keep watching General Hospital!  We know many of your have read rumors on certain message boards, that there is  some concern that an alternate plan in the works that could nix GH in the future to make way for Good Afternoon America.  The point here is:  if only ABC would have left OLTL on,  GH would have had an appropriate lead-in. And point two, if GMA can be a better lead-in for GH, it should help their ratings, but will it give the suits other ideas?  The jury is out!   So what do you think about Good Afternoon America?  Will you tune-in?

If GMA has nothing, then GH should replace it, followed by Katie. Then we boycott Katie and she fails. It’s either soaps in the afternoon or nothing.

Me too all soap fans. No one is going to watch GMA in the afternoon. They will probably have even lower ratings than the Revoltion!!! We want our soaps back not some stupid cheap substitutes that no one wants and no one watches! We want our daytime afternoon line up back that we have had for decades AMC, OLTL, and GH in that order. If they want to put Katie on at 4 pm that is the only way she will get any lead in ratings! Just because GMA in the afternoon doesn’t have an audience does not mean GH will. I have been watching my shows on Hulu the next day as I am working again.

That’s a BIG ditto from me, too. I just hope enough people will get it through their heads.

    ditto – me too!

I wrote a couple emails to my local ABC affliate asking them to please keep GH on in the fall – got an General Hospital newsletter from about.com which gave all the address. Guess ABC was having meetings with the affiliates yesterday and today asking if they’d like to have an hour of GH or GMA in the afternoon for the fall lineup… yes, here we go again! I don’t watch GMA in the morning and hell no, not going to watch it in the afternoon. ABC is just all the same kind of programming all day long without GH! Soaps or ABC is off the air in my house! I told the station, if GH is gone I’ll be going to CBS or NBC for a new soap!

    Barb replied

Will not be watching! GH is the only show I will watch on ABC until they give us back OLTL or release the rights back to Agnes Nixon! UGH!! ABC continues to raise my blood pressure!

You know we fought a good fight and got abc/disney to keep our general hospital, One of the head people at abc said let the best show win, well the revolution was cancelled, now their lying their replacing that stupid show for another waste of time show. I’m glad I continued to boycott abc because I want one life to live back I know that’s not going to happen and I hate to say this but I believe all this back stabbing abc/disney has done to us soap fans never stopped when gh was renewed their lying to shut us up. all soap fans should boycott abc daytime and yes, Prime time to.

I don’t get it either, Why people watch the chew, even the name is dumb, I can’t see any woman wanting to watch those idiots making food and talking stupid uninteresting crap for a long hour, Boring. I want drama, I want our soaps.

    david replied

Agree with your comment below about The Chew. The success of The Chew undermines the soaps. It leads executives to think people will watch any cheap crap. If The Chew had crashed like The Revolution, GH would be safe. The Chew should choke on itself and die. Only soaps after 12 pm or nothing.

    bert replied

i agree. lets boycott the chew and good afternoon america. i really love duets and revenge but nothing else at night on ABC. If they can GH, I will give up duets and revenge until they bring back an afternoon soap.

You don’t need to be a genius to figure out that Good Afternoon America is more than just a summer replacement. It is an actual test to become GH’s replacement. Why are people watching The Chew? It’s a horrible, disgusting show! The Revolution is going but The Chew lives on! Why? Unfortunately, ABC is just using GH as a filler until they find some garbage nobody wants to put on in it’s place. It will be lucky to make it to next year.

    Heather replied

    barbara t,

I have SOMEWHAT felt bad for the folks at The Revolution when their show was cancelled because they probably didn’t know that they were going to replace a soap opera when they took their job at The Revolution.

But I have no sympathy whatsoever for Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer. They both are very well aware that GAA is set to kill to GH. Elliott and Spencer each make huge salaries a year and it makes me sick that they want more, all this at the expense of a soap that has aired for nearly 50 years.

I have never watched The Chew or The Revolution and if ABC thinks that I’m gonna watch this masquerade, they sure have another thing coming.

    gloria replied

Can’t think of anything worse than Good Afternoon Amercia, except maybe the Chew. Agree it is absolutely the worst show ever-horrible, embarrassing. I don’t feel bad for the Revolution people-that show is almost as bad as the Chew. None of them deserve to be on tv at all.

Yes it’s cheap, you don’t need as much revenue or ratings to sustain this type of programming. But really, who would watch this schedule unless you have no cable or internet and you are housebound? I still can’t believe my soaps have been replaced by this cheap, “blah, blah, blah” junk. I don’t even watch my ABC affilliate news or programming because of this direction. And I let them know it. I would rather read a book, go for a walk, listen to music or do anything than be subjected to this for over 12 straight hours per day when you include the local news in the mix. And most people consider me a “news junkie”. This is overkill to the max. If they take GH off the schedule I hope it is the nail in the ABC/D coffin.

I think that we, as a fan base, sometimes wait too long before mobilizing for our shows. Now would be an excellent time to write to ABC/Disney in support of GH and state that we won’t be watching any of their daytime offerings except GH (or if a miracle happened and they’d consider putting AMC and OLTL back together). We cannot afford to be “curious” and watch this new GAA. It seems like a rip-off of ET and the thousand other entertainment shows out there. Good luck with that. If we don’t watch GAA and their ratings are low, but there’s a spike for GH, that would say something positive. That being said, however, TPTB could still pull the rug out from ounder us. Even if that were to happen, I’d rather fight for my show than do nothing and watch them yank it.

Except for GH, I watch no other ABC show, daytime or primetime. I won’t help put the final nail in GH’s coffin by watching GAA. We helped tank the Revolution, let’s do the same with this crap. Don’t watch!

What rock has Josh Elliot been living under? He thinks another talk/news show is bringing something new to the afternoons? Epic snore. As I said before, ABC used the one collective brain cell they had left to renew GH. Now they are back to their lobotomized ideas for what they think passes as entertainment.

ABC, NBC, CBS, use to be great networks then slowly they have been killing the very programs that made afternoons a pleasure to watch, Now they want us to be informed to death, Not once have I ever tuned into those awful shows they replaced the soaps for to find out how to cook, dress, behave, decorate a table, the list goes on. The last thing I want to hear is the news 24/7 that’s depressing I want entertainment, drama, I want my soaps back and I want them to leave general hospital alone. The soaps were my getaway to spend time with my favorite characters and some questionable characters it was a fun place to be sometimes sad, where I needed a few tissues close by, But it was my place to go to relax and enjoy my afternoons slowly that pleasure is being taken away by several greedy people who would rather have money in there pockets then have the soaps on that made a lot of people happy.

One good thing about not watching this mess,is we take the future in our own hands. We don’t watch,so they know how we feel,if they don’t care neither should we.
I am home all day,so I can make sure ABC is not on in this house. My grandchildren watch the educational channels.I don’t even have to have Disney on for them.
When Soapnet becomes the Disney channel for 3 to 5 year olds that won’t be on here the ages of my grandchildren.
Disney wants to make lots of money, they had better get a counterfeiter machine and print their own.

Way to go janet, I couldn’t agree with you more, I most definitely feel the same way as you do about disney and their money. No one will ever watch any abc/disney program in my house either.

Allegedly, the scripted-for-reality swap is all about cutting costs. So I wonder if it ever occured to the penny-pinching morons at ABC that rather than alienate generations (literally) of soap fans, they should have reduced OLTL and AMC to a half-hour each and cut their budgets in half?

Sure, it might have meant trimming the casts on the shows, but I think soap fans would still be tuning in to watch…and maybe would have even been willing to sample whatever ABC tried to program in the freed-up hour. (Plus a smaller cast/tighter focus might have even improved the shows creatively.)

As it now stands, ABC has got to realize that throwing 80+ collective years of TV history out the window all at once was a short-sighted and unnecessarily drastic move – especially given that Disney was not able to discontinue SoapNet as it originally planned (the SoapNet announcement, in hindsight, was a signal of the beginning of the end for the ABC-owned soaps). So now Disney is stuck broadcasting a network with 40% less original content than it had this time last year.

So, I ask you, fellow soap lovers, if ABC (or anyone else) were to resurrect OLTL (and/or AMC) in a reduced format, would you tune in? I sure would – even though I’m still pissed at ABC.

I don’t think I have seen such anger at a network and they continue to anger and insult viewers and loyal fans of the soaps especially. They get rid of to legacies AMC and OLTL. The screw AMC with a horrible ending that didn’t work because AMC is not going on the internet. They then screw soap fans again by denying Devious Maids a spot in the fall despite several soap actors including Grant show and Susan Lucci. It’s like ABC wants a knee jerk reaction and have more fans leave the alphabet network.

The thing I don’t understand here is when abc canceled the soaps that a$$hole Frons said that soaps cost too much to produce so they were going the cheap way – reality based programming. Umm is Katie Couric doing her show for free? What about Josh Elliot & Lara Spencer? Are they doing an additional show out of the goodness of their hearts? I doubt it. So how is abc saving money? There were so many options to save those soaps from cancellation. Bottom line~abc wants OUT of the daytime drama programing and they are not going to stop until their network is soap free. GH is far from safe…..

ABC can forget any eyeballs being on GAA in this house. I dont even watch GMA. Its boring. I have no interest in watching another gabby gabb talk show with nothing more to say than the one before or after it. I miss my soaps. My afternnoon used to be ABC all day and night. (I worked 2nd shift) What i couldnt watch live, i would record and watch when i got home from work. Now, since they decided “they know what we want and what we need” (garbage tv) and they have decided that they dont need any of the “soap fanbase” , I dont need ABC. My mornings I watch reruns of OLTL (until they destroy soapnet in my area) then the tv is off until DOOL is on, and ill watch “The Talk” because those women are actually FUN to watch and listen to. they dont nag or bitch with or at each other. its a fun show. But I only tune in to ABC when GH is on. Hoping to see my OLTL characters also. I have watched these soaps , AMC , OLTL, and GH since I was a little girl and my 50th birthday is coming up in July. My family and my family before me have always been ABC viewers.. Not anymore. No longer will i be submitted to drivel on the airwaves. When Soapnet goes off the air completely, my cable company will be losing another subscriber of that tier. I wont need anything but basic tv. Once GH goes off the air. ABC will be dead to my household. There is nothing on that station that is interesting to watch anymore. Im tired of being “talked” to death by snooty people who dont even know me or my life. Please get a grip ABC. Ur “reality” tv’ing it to death. Give it a break!

If you want gibberish watch OWN. We want our soaps. Stick together and boycott ABC and Disney. Play with your kids when they get home after General Hospital. That’s better than Disney.

I’m very upset with ABC taking One Life to Live off the air. I am so glad Revolution faiiled as I hope Good Afternoon America will also. Most of all why did ABC not work with other options to keep OLTL on but they would not give up the rights and a program proven to be successful as OLTL and GH and All My Children . ABC have to shove down our throats new programing when it is apparent that we did not want the change. I will not tune into Good Afternoon America as I have not tuned into the Chew nor Revolution. Apparently ABC does not listen to their viewers or they would never had made the changes to take OLTL and All My Children off. You have lost my viewership when you took OLTL off and I hope they are not thinking of taking General Hospital off as I have heard rumors of that. ABC better wake up. I make sure I see General Hospital. You are probably afraid that if you let those shows air elsewhere you would lose all your viewers, which I would be one to follow OLTL and GH. ABC wake up and listen to your viewers.

Please do not cancel Good Afternoon America. Why Katie Couric? I will watch GAA and GH but not Katie. I saw no reason to change GH ‘s time slot. You are really going to hurt and not help. All the good programs day and night you cancel. Give them a full year for a season then decide. People just get into the “plot so to say” then you pull the plug and start something else. I used to put TV on ABC and never change it. Now I’m hanging on to my remote and use it a lot. Thank You

I am a soap fan for the past 40 yrs. I did not watch the Chew or the Revolution. I did however watch GAA and just loved it. PLEASE NO KATIE COURIC. LEAVE GAA ON. We have enough talk shows, GAA is a GREAT afternoon show. It seems when you get a show that someone likes, you cancel the show, and then you leave the audience just hanging. I watched all of the GAA shows, and liked everyone of them. And now that’s going to be gone. Here’s another hanging.

It is really sad that these soap opera people can’t seem to grow up! I’d rather laugh and enjoy the variety of guests that GAA has each day. The repartee between Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer is very enjoyable and the show brightens my day every day.

    K. Couric is a totally unnecessary addition to the ABC lineup.

    Smarten up, ABC!
