635 January 4th, 2013 Agnes Nixon Issues Statement Confirming The Returns Of All My Children & One Life to Live!

Courtesy/ABC

Wow! What a way to end the first week of the New Year!  Legendary soap creator, Agnes Nixon confirmed an hour ago via her facebook page that it is indeed true that Prospect Park is bringing back her creations of All My Children and One Life to Live back to life and online!

Nixon started her post by saying, “We did it! I am so pleased to share it with YOU first. This could never have happened without your unwavering support. “  With deepest gratitude, Agnes

Then she went into her official statement stating:  “We of the One Life to Live and All My Children families are thrilled to bring our beloved viewers new, ongoing stories from Llanview and Pine Valley.

I’m overjoyed that so many actors you love have voiced their desire to bring their characters back to life.  I’m especially grateful to Prospect Park for deploying the power of you, our fans, to enable this exciting transition to dramatic production for the Internet. It’s a historic moment, comparable to how life was changed when television took over from radio.  We hope this wonderful opportunity will be embraced by all as our creative teams gear up to bring our beloved serials back to our daily lives.”

And that so includes all us fans, whose undying loyalty to these shows definitely played a part in bringing our them back to life!

I agree 100%!! I am just over 50 & have been watching these shows since I was 12 yrs. old . I have gone to events including a softball game in Bayville NJ that was a benefit for a sick child, One life to Live & General Hospital played against each other, this was years ago. Then several years back, myself & oldest daughter & friend, went to a Comedy Club at the Tropicana Casino to see several stars from AMC. As I grew up & had my own family while my children were still babies, I watched Ryans Hope thru General Hospital, then when they all started school & Iife got busy I only watched AMC. Now that I’m retired, they toke it off & I quit watching ABC & have refused to watch it ever since. I really got so mad & upset that I don’t even watch T.V. at all anymore. So long story short, when can I watch my first AMC episode??? I miss it badly!!! So bad that I told my husband if we win a big lottery I want to pay whoever to get AMC back on TV. But internet is fine, with me, I just want my friends from Pine Valley back!!!!

excited!! I watched these shows as a child in the 70′s with my great grandmother up until she died in 77 then continued to watch them in honor of her. My mom & I watched the final episodes with each other last year in tears. So looking forward to watching them again!

Watched AMC since it started. It is a part of me. One of the thrills of my life was attending Super Soap Weekend twice at MGM in FL. Breakfast with Susan Lucci one year was icing on the cake! I vowed never to watch anything else on ABC at 1:00pm. Not only have I never watched The Chew, but my TV remains turned off at 1:00 & stays off the rest of the afternoon! I remain a faithful fan & will be a part of it if & when it comes back to life. Will be cautious not to hold expectations too high. Sure would like them to resolve those 3 cliffhangers they left with us on the last show. They could have wrapped those stories up better & left us a bit more satisfied with the ending.

I’ll believe this when I actually see it. Only the most hardcore AMC/OLTL fans are remotely interested in this, and the reality is that there aren’t many of them left out there. Even if the budgets are slashed (resulting in lower production values), the shows would still be fairly expensive to produce, and I don’t see enough online viewers watching (translating into enough ad revenue) to make up the costs even if these shows actually make it onto the internet. Say both shows need to be aired on TV as well. I still don’t see enough viewers for any cable channel to consider them worth the expense. They’d all most likely LOSE $$$.

Basically, the large majority of casual viewers have moved on from this and don’t care anymore, most older viewers (the core of the daytime soap audience) don’t go online to watch TV, and other potential viewers who might care could easily lose interest if their favorite actors(s)/character(s) aren’t on the proposed revivals. I don’t see very many new viewers tuning in to make up for the previous lost audience.

This whole project has “FLOP” written all over it.

I am THRILLED to see anyone from OLTL back on the air of any kind.. It may not be TV but on line but who cares WE HAVE THEM BACK…. Happy here!!

    TeenaGrace replied

I do miss the daily soaps and I still watch General Hospital, so I’d love to have them back. However, we recently moved out in the middle of nowhere, so my internet is via a crappy satellite, and even trying to watch a 2 minute You Tube clip is very frustrating. I may have to forego watching any returning episodes of anything if my only avenue is online. :-(

    AJ replied

I agree 100%. Soap fans should really be careful what they wish for from this. Does Prospect Park really want to have egg on their faces a second time? I don’t trust them one bit after what happened last time.

How can both of these shows possibly generate enough ad revenue from just online advertising (especially w/o a cable TV partner) to offset the high production costs involved? It just does not add up.

Even if by some miracle these shows did launch on the internet, I think it’s going to be extremely short-lived. Outside of the titles, the shows will be almost unrecognizable and nothing like what people remember. And it’s been at least a year since both soaps went off and most of the cast and crew members have moved on, as have the large majority of casual viewers out there. At best, these soaps would probably attract roughly 1/10th of the already shrinking audience they had on ABC.

    Reply

    Lin replied

I agree with most of what you have said. But two half hour shows (that is the plan) or even two 15 minute shows would need to generate less revenue. Actors will be able to do other shows as well, so they won’t need as much money. I would think Susan Lucci will not come on board, but personally I don’t feel we need Erica. she is so predictable that we can guess what she’d do. I think GH would allow Roger, Michael, and Starr (can’t remember her name this second) to go back and forth occasionally. It’s going to be 4 days a week and a weekly review on Friday. I am hoping for the best, but not allowing myself to really believe.

I actually don’t agree with you. I have several friends in the “older viewer” category who are very up to speed on their computers and will be thrilled to hear this news. There are many more hardcore fans of these shows then you realize and they’ve only moved on because they had no other choice. But as soon as they learn their favorite soaps are back, (even in limited form) they will come rushing back to watch. I’m sure Prospect Park has done their research and wouldn’t be going to this extent if they didn’t feel they could make it a success. So be optimistic and keep the faith and be happy! But to think us fans have to hard core is silly and to think we moved on is just outrageous… you can’t take away something that has been in our lives for 30 years and removed it for one year and think okay they have moved on. Being a ‘hardcore viewer’ I am a whole heck of a lot more than “remotely” interested in the 2 soaps coming back. How do you know what the majority of viewers, casual or otherwise, care about? I’ll believe it when I see it too, but let’s be optimistic here as well. If Agnes says it’s going to happen then I believe her. This is fantastic news! Moving on? What does that mean? That’s a dumb statement. I’ve started watching GH to see some of the Llanview folks and am enjoying that show but I will definitely make time for OLTL and AMC when they come back. Cheers!

By AMC being online us dedicated fans (and I believe there are more than you think) can watch this show 24/7. AMC was a show that brought fantasy to life in many ways b/c very real issues were portrayed (ok, maybe not everyone can “buy” their way out of every situation) and these actresses and actors were like our family and friends. YES YES YES!!! I’ll take seeing my buddies from Pine Valley on tv, online. in a magazine…

@Chris Very intelligent and practical responses. I too wonder just how profitable this venture will be and what it will garner as far as ratings go. I think some hardcore fans will watch but as you mention the average fan of daytime serials these days is around 50 yrs old. Studies have shown that.
I am 48 myself but I am extremely web savvy. Unfortunately I dont find my fans like me. Also I wonder how successful they will be at raising advertising dollars. I quit both OLTL & AMC long before they were cancelled because I lost interest. I watched AMC in its heyday in the late 70s and fell away sometime in the 90s. Same with OLTL. I hope the reboot works for Agnes’s sake and the sake of the genre. But as you said this is an extremely expensive project. PP is playing over 8 million a yr just to license the rights. It hard to believe that they will have enough money to pay all the fan favorite actors and to produce a truly quality show.
These are grim facts, but I am encouraged to read intelligent comments from an informed soap fan.

I agree with you Gayle, I am very happy with this “promising” news, and I am excited with the possibility of seeing OLTL and AMC on a regular basis once again, as I miss both shows and so many characters, but I think Todd, Starr and John are now truly established in Port Charles and should remain there, and could make the occasional trip to Llanview for crossovers. That is how it would play out if I had my drothers, but of course it is up to those involved. Most importantly, I will be happy to see many talented actors and actresses have steady work again, playing characters that they brought to life, not to mention affording many jobs to those behind the scenes as well. Thank you for the update Agnes, and my fingers are crossed and good luck to all involved!!!

I am a long time fan of all 3 of the abc soaps (43 years) and I am happy with the news but still not getting my hopes up. Prospect Park has disappointed in the past. They had actors and actresses who signed up to do the online show and then it all fell apart. That being said I agree with Gayle and the rest of you. Michael Easton, Kristen Alderson and Roger Howarth have firmly established themselves in Port Charles and I really want them to stay. They are under contract to GH and abc I don’t think they will be going back to Llanview. I don’t see abc allowing them to go to what is now their competition.

    Jon replied

They are a part of oltl, so prospect park has every right to them.

    Ugonna Wosu replied

they belong on OLTL. They are not THAT well established on GH at all, and their relationships can easily be broken up. They all just started and are insignificant parts of GH history, and their new relationships are insignificant compared to the grand loves they had on OLTL. Time to go back HOME!!!! YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!!

    Denise replied

I don’t think there is a lot for Starr or Todd to go back to,but John needs to go back to OLTL, Natalie and his family. That is one storyline I just haven’t bought into. Natalie would never allow her father to do what he has supposedly done. and she would never keep John away from his son…

    Mary replied

Eh, John can go back to Llanview. I agree with Denise. Todd should go back so he can find Victor alive. Besides, it has been my experience with the ABC soaps that whenever they continually bring up a past character’s name, the character usually materializes which means Cole & Hope will turn up alive with amnesia from the fall over the cliff and be reunited with Starr and they can move back to Llanview. I do, however, like Starr & Michael together.

    dg replied

I dont agree. They are not part of GH. They are One Life characters. And if the One Life reboot is to survive the main story that majority of One Lifers want to see is the resolution of the Victor Lord Jr story.
Roger Howarth is key to that as Todd. GH needs to move on and refocus on its own history as it heads toward its 50th anniversary. Ive watche GH for 43 of its 49 yrs. I found the One Life experiment very tiresome. GH can’t be used as a vehicle to continue One Life or AMC. I truly hope that if the reboot works all three One Life actors will ship out of GH and end back where they belong. I would have welcomed the actors if they were written as new characters tied to GH history.
But alas they were used in a ploy to continue One Life. Now hopefully One Life will gain new life and they can take their characters back.

    tim replied

What if Howarth and Alderson don’t want to be part of the new OLTl? They turned down PP’s original offer, and there’s no reason to think they will change their minds.Should they recast Todd (again) and Starr? or leave the characters on GH?

I dont think we will be seeing Michael Easton, Roger Howarth or Kristen Alderson on this incarnation of OLTL. As much as I want to, they have moved to LA and are employed by a SOAP that is actually doing good on TV. What will be interesting to see is how they will deal with all of the OLTL story that has been developed on GH. Natalie is seeing someone else, Clint is threatening to have Bo fired if he brings back John, while Tea has lost her baby and Blair’s fiancé Tomas may indeed by Lorenzo Alcazar. It would be a shame for the new writers to ignore all of this story, but at the same time it could be difficult to work with. The best way for this to work is for the Frank and Ron at GH to work with the new heads of OLTL to try and incorporate the new stores while also having it make sense for characters in Port Charles.

big deal, they can write all that on OLTL. Nothing tying them that strongly to GH. Lorenzo? Please.

Hopefully something will transpire where they will be shown on the television. Either way I am pulling for PP and hoping that this all becomes a reality .

What a long and empty year. I’m hopeful, and would like all the viewers who have moved on to another soap, to return easily to the online version. As time goes on I think all soaps will be online in the future. This could be the ground floor of a whole new way to view shows online. Radio to TV to Online.

Fingers crossed that this venture can work. I don’t think we should anticipate 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year, but I’m sure they can come up with a schedule that will be fulfilling to established fans and new viewers alike. And here’s hoping Guiding Light and As the World Turns will follow.

The rights to ATWT and GL were already purchased by a video company. That gave them the right to sell those videos. But that’s a far cry from reproducing those shows for TV. If the company had the money or inclination Im sure they would have done so by now.

AMC and OLTL need to come back different than they aired on ABC. The formula needs to be improved with the online venue. The writing team should honor the history o the show with an initial plot and a few returning actors that also launch new dynamic non-related characters.

Prospect Park has offered the opportunity to press the restart button and be innovative. Let’s hope the Producer and writing team deliver!

That ship has sailed. I wish they’d let those shows rest in peace. Soap operas are dying because they won’t take risks. They don’t work as cosy hours of escapism or light entertainment. Those are the reasons OLTL and AMC declined so much over the years – they lost their guts. It was no longer shocking when somebody came back from the dead or somebody was held at gunpoint – it was predictable and inane.

I only know that they immediately killed off Hope, and possibly Cole?? I also remember hearing rumors (when they were going to do the online thing in the first place), that they were going to start the shows way into the future. Ugh. I sure hope not! I never watched these two soaps, but I do know change alters our expectations of what normal is. If you go online expecting your shows to be like they were on television you might be disappointed. But if you willing to embrace the new normal I don’t see why these shows on line will get a new audience loving it for what it is now, instead of trying to recapture the past. As a AW fan, I know I was first thrilled when characters from that show went to ATWT, but eventually those characters were killed off. A part of me wishes I could remember those characters alive and happy, as they were in the last show that aired. So I hope this doesn’t happen for you guys who want all their beloved characters back— only to find them gone from this new incarnation. But best of luck, to PP and kudos for at least trying and having faith in the genre to invest in it.

One more thing. ABC does not realize what they did when they took these shows off the air. I no longer turn the TV ON during the day…there’s is nothing worth watching. I will definitely be “tuning in” to a revived OLTL. It could be a combination of ad revenue & subscription that will pay for the show. Crystal Chappell proved with Venice people would pay to view a soap on line.

Even if they get a good number of the core characters to return with the vets in the roles I would not be that upset at some recasts or the introduction of new characters. Really, it happens all the time now so what would be the big deal. Of course, I would not want certain people replaced in roles….Erika Slezak IS Viki….Robin Strasser IS Dorian. But, honestly, we have weathered how many Joeys and Kevins in the past?

Give it a chance people….that’s all anyone can ask.

1st of all Prospect Park will sign the actors that they can from these soaps, if they have characters that have crossed over to another soap they just can’t leave that soap and come back, they are under contract. so if an actor comes back from say General Hospital it won’t be because he or she was “Stolen Back” so it would be stupid to say you won’t watch AMC or OLTL because of that. Substitute the word “television” for the word “internet” and you’ve pretty much stated the argument made 60 odd years ago against soaps successfully transitioning from radio to tv.

You might be right, of course, but then again, you just might be wrong.
The world is changing, the future of entainment is online – plenty is there already.

We dropped cable a couple of years ago and only watch via internet – hooking your tv up is relatively simple – and we’ve never looked back.

I for one am excited that AMC will be back on to tell stories of our favorite characters and couplings. Everyone needs to remember how sad they were when these soaps went off the air. I wish that people would support this online venture then eventually these shows could move on to cable maybe even a mainstream network when they see how many people are still endeared and interested in soaps. It is Baby Steps everyone Baby Steps. Stay positive…..

I just wonder if Ron And Frank will be involved, and will there be cross overs,(Todd,Starr and John) back to Llanview ?
And will they finally address Victor Jr. being alive ?????

I am hoping that most of the cast will return, but now that Debbie Morgan and Darnell Williams have moved on from the Y & R – we can get Angie and Jesse back too amongst Dr. Castillo, Kendall Hart, Erica Kane and so many others This is outstanding news and looking forward to the first air date on the internet. From what I’ve read we won’t be seeing the real AMC & OLTL but barebones versions. PP is going to alternate AMC & OLTL every 5 weeks. I personally believe it takes more than 5 weeks for a soap storyline to develop and conclude. I still don’t understand why no announcement or statement from PP or ABC/D. One would think that PP and especially ABC/D want some good publicity for a change. Before everyone gets all giddy remember we were told basically the same info in July 2011.

    Reply

    boes replied

I don’t know what you mean by “barebones” version. It sounds like they’ll do a story arc in 5 weeks, which is plenty of time for some stories. Others will undoubtedly carry over to the next bunch.

Take a look at Crystal Chappell’s new soap, The Grove. I don’t see anything barebones about it at all. If AMC or OLTL can look like that, then it’ll be fine.

Different, maybe – probably undoubtedly. But times change, and that’s life. But I’ll embrace the change if we get the shows back.

THRILLED, to see both soaps coming back, would prefer to see in on TV instead of internet and am also curious of I will have to pay to watch them again, which i really would consider doing. Lots of the AMC and OLTL actors have facebook pages, so I would venture to say check out their facebook pages since they will probably post about this announcement . From what I read, there are MANY of the previous actors from both of these soaps that would come back if asked. Also the people that think that most of the diehard soap fans have moved on are WRONG. The majority of them will all be back watching them , especially senior citizens who started watching both soaps since the first day they aired on tv.

I have been a fan of both since 1978 and met most of the orginial actors and actresses back then when i was young and lived in NY. I was shocked about the rumors of taking both off the air, hurt when it actually happened and disappointed when the rumoors started about their return (that did not happen). But what was more dissappointing was the finality of both soaps while garbage like Bold and the Beautiful remains on air. (even though its a different network) Everyone on this soap sleeps with everyone and that is too much incest for me. I’d raher watch my dvr rerun of amc and oltl or soapnets old replays. Bravo for the return of great soaps like All My Children and One Life to Live. Can not wait.

the GH fans think they’ll be upset, but they’ll get over it a lot easier than we OLTL fans would get over losing Todd, Starr, and John for good. The few months they loved their “new couple” cannot compare to 20 years of a supercouple in TnB, 10 years of Jolie, and about 5 years of Cole/Starr. The writers should get their priorities straight and realize who it makes SENSE to please here. Carly will as always find someone else, Sam needs time to grieve, and Michael will find some girl to love as he’s still young. Next please?

I highly doubt that I will be able to watch online, because I live in Canada and most of the programming from the US is restricted for us to watch online. We do not get Hulu etc, because they are not allowed to stream within Canada. So I am very doubtful that the programming for these online soaps will be available to the Canadian fans. One can only hope.

A lot of us know very little about this new generation of computers I have never heard of where they will be coming on, will need lot of instructions. Thank You I love those two shows and I miss them so much, I was hoping to retire and turn on my television and see my three favorite soaps. Maybe I will figure how to watch them, wish still they would go back to the soap net channel, your older generation would really appreciate that, thank you again for all you hard work, you are a very awesome lady.

Thank you for sharing this Agnes. I love the All My Children stars. I started watching AMC in 1970 with my mother when I was home on leave from the Army. I was watching it everyday at 1 to 2 p.m. on ABC. Of course it was only a 1/2 hour show. Erica, Mona, Erica mother. Chuck Taylor, Phillip Brent, Tara Brent, Dr. Taylor. Later as years wen by I became attached to the sow. It was like we were all one big family. I loved Jennie and Greg, Tad and Liza. then Tad and Dixie were my favorite couple of all time. Michael Knight and Cady McClain. I try to stay in touch with Cady, Eva La Rue and Debbie Morgan. Jessie anjd Angela Hubbard had gone through so much as well. I am, and always will be an AMC fan for eternity. I can’t wait to see the wonderful cast of AMC online and back to their characters. God bless all of them and you as well Agnes. With sincere love and admiration to such a lovely lady as you Agnes. With love as a fan and friend of the AMC Family, Carle Wells!

This is great news. Whoever thinks that us “hard core” watchers have given up on shows we watched for 30+ years is insane. I also work everyday but would always record/dvr AMC and watch it at night, or catch up on the week on the weekends. Currently I dvr all episodes of AMC that Soapnet shows each night, then watch them each night and on the weekends, even though they are re-runs and I already know the outcome, at least I still have some form of AMC to watch. I’m thrilled that Agnes has acknowledged it’s return, even if it is online, I’m definitely going to be tuning in to get whatever new AMC I can get!

I have boycotted ABC ever since and have NOT watched a single show of anytype on that network. In fact, I have it set up as a ” blocked unfavorite ” channel on my Dish SatTV receiver box. It skips right over that network which is included in my local channel programing.
I have been recording on my DVR and watching the reuns of AMC on the SoapNetwork channel , ch. 253 on DishNetwork TV ever since they pulled AMC from ABC and have almost 40 of my favorite episodes of AMC saved to record later to DVD. I’ll be glad when they return the seris back to full time broadcasting and I’m curious to see how many of the original stars are returning.

Looking forward to AMC again, as long as it’s free and easily accessible. I too have never watched the Chew…. just because it replaced AMC and it looked stupid. Hope most actors return, otherwise I don’t know how good it will be.

If this is true, Woo Hoo! I am truly excited. I have watched these shows from their initial beginning and was so distraught when they were taken off the air. As far as I am concerned, there were taken off for no apparent reason other than someone in the higher ups didn’t want them on the air anymore. I have not looked at the shows that took their place and have no intention to; as a matter of fact one was off the air within 2-3 weeks, the next show was off within 4 weeks and now we having yet another “talk show”!!! Why, they all talk about the same things – so why so many talk shows!! Ridiculous. Maybe there will be order restored with the two favorite soaps coming back, even if it is online!!!

I grew up watching both AMC & OLTL back in the 70s and into the 80s, and although hadn’t watched either of them in many years, I was still shocked and saddened to see them cancelled by ABC. However, if this production company, Prospect Park, can successfully pull off the “reboot” of these soaps online it’ll definitely make media history. My only concern is that since both of the soaps have been off the air for over a year, how many of the cast members can & will actually return, particularly Susan Lucci on AMC & Erika Slezak on OLTL? Without Erica or Viki it going to be difficult to get the audience/viewers back.

have missed both soaps, have watched them since 1980. The cooking shows, The Doctors, and Dr. OZ were a poor substitute. What we had instead was political theater, again, a poor substitute.

My daughters and I will be so happy the day AMC comes back on. I’ve been a fan for over 25 years and hate all the new reality shows. AMC let you forget about reality for an hour ; ) I just mentioned to my husband a few weeks ago that I missed AMC. Can’t wait to share the news with my girls…

I’m the most excited fan of all…………I have been so depressed ever since AMC was taken off the air. My heart is so happy to hear this news. Bless you Agnes Nixon, hope we can see the cast again real soon. I have watched AMC every since it started, and the day it was cancelled, my family sent me sympathy cards, that’s how sad I was. I will be waiting with such anticipation for my favorite soap to return. :-)

Wendy Im so encouraged to actually here a soap fan say that! Since the cancellations of AMC & OLTL I have talked to tons of fans and Im surprised that no one else just turned off the TV set and found other things to do.
I find that fact very troubling. Im so proud to actually have found a fan who moved on with their life and didnt fall to pieces over a work of fiction. You encourage me. Thanks.

    OMG, great news!!
As I just posted on my wall 1/8/13 when I logged on FB :
    =================
For my friends who were ( and still are) fans of A.M.C.
and my fav OLTL (when I had to pare down the ABC soaps)…

the 2 soaps are COMING BAAAAAACK!

I don’t have any details, just that production starts in Feb ’13.
will it be on ABC TV?
    will it be on SOAPNET?
will it be on another CABLE CH?
    will it be on INTERNET?
will it be still 1HR or 30min?

I know some of fan favs from OLTL are now contracted to GH, only 3 recurring: John, Todd and Starr…
others moved to other soaps (“Red”… aka Nora)
but I think many are avail to continue the story in Llanview, and others on Pine Valley.

I watched AMC from the very first episode and was SO bummed when it went off…and HATE the show it was replaced with! I would LOVE to be able to watch it on my computer and hope it happens with all of the same actors! Yay!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, me too. I watched both shows. AMC for about 20 years and OLTL since day one. I was so pissed when they took them off and replaced them with those worthless talk shows with the rabidly clapping and cheering audiences. I started watching B&B just to laugh at it, and GH to follow Todd, John, Starr and anyone else they might add to the story. Now what? Am I supposed to watch three and a half hours of soaps every day? ;(

Why doesn’t Prospck Park offer Robin Strasser a role. I won’t pay to watch AMC or OLTL on HULA if her or Erika Slezak are not part of the reboot.

If Agnes had stayed at the helm both shows probably wouldnt have been cancelled in the first place. I no longer watch either show but I hope the online reboots work for her sake. Also if any other soaps are cancelled they may have a soft place to fall.
