150 June 5th, 2013 All My Children & One Life to Live Halt Production Early For Hiatus Due To Labor Dispute!

Courtesy/TOLN

More breaking news this afternoon from Prospect Park and The OnLine Network.  The labor dispute that recently came to light by The Wrap earlier this week, has caused some issues with production now for both All My Children and One Life to Live!  And because of this, the scheduled hiatus for both shows is now beginning effective tomorrow on June 6th, instead of June 17th.  What this means for the future status of production remains to be seen, but according to an official statement just released by TOLN, they hope thing can be hammered out so by August they begin shooting all-new episodes on time!

TOLN Official Statement: “As a result of a dispute with the I.A.T.S.E., The OnLine Network is beginning a long-planned hiatus for both All My Children and One Life To Live tomorrow instead of June 17.  The hiatus is scheduled to end on August 12 pending resolution of this labor issue. Right now we have 40 episodes of each show ready to post through September, and if we can resolve this issue by August, we can get back into the studio on time so audiences will enjoy uninterrupted postings of their favorite shows.

We believe we have met all contract requirements with I.A.T.S.E, and as an internet start-up, and per our contract with the I.A., we cannot afford, and our business model cannot sustain, traditional broadcast rates.

The writers, directors, actors and rest of crew have been supportive of the shows and our success. Both One Life To Live and All My Children consistently earn top rankings on both Hulu and iTunes since launch just over a month ago. The popularity of the shows is matched by the continued passion and excitement from the fans. We are committed to these shows, and to the nearly 300 jobs they produce, thus we are exploring every legal and logistical option to maintain our production schedule.”

So AMC and OLTL fans, what do you think of the latest news? Hoping all will work out come August?  Share your thoughts!

Now-because of all of this finagling-what if PP decides to get rid of all of these headaches and stop production for good-what will the union do then? Having a job is better then having none at all.

Um, the union, in this case, has bent over backwards to accomodate PP. They have been quite flexible with them. And now PP has reneged on a few of the things the union asked. So yes, PP is to blame.

Or just move to Texas. We are a right to work state and do pretty well for ourselves. Many of our cities were cited as places to live to ride out a bad economy. Unions have no control here and we are doing quite well.

    Gin,

Unions are not the ONLY way to be heard. They are NOT the only way to work, garner a decent salary/wage. Thankfuklly one company I worked for I could chose to belong or not. I chose not to after asking friends of mine that were in the union. The union played its own favorites game and guess what……….their OWN elected treasurer embezzled their funds and guess who had to replace them due to a ever so unjust arbitration team deemed – the company! Now why should the company pay the amount of the embezzled funds that they had absolutely NOTHING to do with? Because the union muscle BS said they could not do it and someone had to cover the missing money (of course not their very own treasurer that embezzled the money and was NOT charged or jailed for it either!)! If I have an employer abuse me with low wages I have the option to go elsewhere to work. I do not need to pay a corrupt union official to retain my job if I screw up, because I chose ot take responsibility for my actions. I witnessed union workers drinking and coming in high and screwing up and getting off because of the union. Yeah that so does NOT work for me and it certainly is not the only place I witnessed this.
There are more than two sides to every story hon.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) is the organization which oversees the working conditions, including standardized rates, for much of the crew. Today the IATSE is the largest union representing workers in the entertainment industry. Their members work in all forms of live theater, motion picture and television production, trade shows and exhibitions, television broadcasting, and concerts as well as the equipment and construction shops that support all these areas of the entertainment industry. The IATSE represents virtually all the behind the scenes workers in crafts ranging from motion picture animator to theater usher.

I’m sorry but the halted production. I’ll be surprised if they come back. A hiatus at this point in time is not exactly the best idea. Talk about halting any momentum that they have built up.

    Joliefan Forever replied

Kelly do you read the articles or just skim it? They were all ready taking a SCHEDULED hiatus on June 17th til August 12th, they are only going on hiatus about a week or 2 earlier, your acting like this hiatus was not planned and they are taking it because of the Union deal……

    MissQ replied

    Kelly,

Reading and comprehension must not be your forte. AMC has been on hiatus,,,,,,,,,a scheduled hiatus at that! If you recall AMC started shooting a little over a month before OLTL. Because they have not shot one hour episodes and clearly stated half hour episodes their work day/week is not anywhere near as long as before. If you also recall when they were on ABC, they had started the past few years they were having short hiatuses. Holiday programming showing older episodes. There is NOTHING nefarious going on and no big deal that OLTL is going on hiatus 11 days before the original PLANNED hiatus for them. Get a grip girl! Or better yet, get a real clue. Know what you are talking about before opening your yap!

The fact that PP has halted production tells you there is obviously something that was broken. PP is fearful of what they are going to pay out so they are halting production early. The union is making an allegation that they are not being paid according to their deal, remember in American innocent until proven guilty. Secondly, I am sure there are things that were not foreseen by PP nor the union, since this is a whole new medium. There will be ups and downs and lessons learned by ALL. It doesn’t mean that ANYONE is trying to screw others.

Sheesh I wish people would chill and try to learn before opening their yaps with negative BS. I had enough of that from ABC/Disney the past 2 yrs!

    Pen replied

Joliefan, the Union did step in. They hammered out a deal with PP, allowing the crews to be paid A SCALED DOWN SALARY as long as the shows didn’t go over a certain daily budget. That was the deal. The crew has every right to be paid what was agreed.

First they cut the number of episodes because viewers aren’t watching enough. That also caused FX Canada to stop airing the shows. Then the union asks a question about finances and they shut down production. These issues arise in television all the time, but don’t have to cause so much drama. I say keep the drama on the screen and work out your troubles like professionals.

I personally believe this is an attempt by ABC to see the venture failure. The entire cast and crew have done a fantastic job. I personally have never been pro-union so since that is the way the entertainment field works it union and its members should come to a new agreement to hand the new production and delivery model. This is likely why they scaled down the number of new episodes per week, as the reasons originally presented made very little sense. As for whether or not ABC has a hand in this remains to be seen. Ultimately, Disney is the real villain in the piece. ABC is just a small part of the larger conglomerate and even they discovered how much the parent company had their backs when Disney Imaging backed PP and Disney refused to back ABC in the lawsuit. Suddenly the unions are pointed at as the reason for a hiatus and possible future delays. These are the same union members that were put out of work when ABC/Disney canceled the soaps. And let’s not forget that the movers and shakers at PP/OLN are both former Disney corporation employees and that the dreaded Brian Frons was brought into ABC by Disney to dismantle the soaps, take the heat and then quietly go away. So don’t blame the unions, blame Disney, they are the ones still looking to shift blame because things are so bad in the mouse house that they’ve had to increase parks admissions by $90.00 to keep the shareholders happy.

Right now I feel sorry for the people that are out of work because of the dispute, what ever it may be. I do think more people would watch if they knew about the show’s being back on. Maybe run a commercial on ABC to let viewers know. I found out via FB.

You can watch both programs on your computer…just type in Hulu.com and you then click on the link for TV shows and movies….then type in All My Children OR one Life To Live…you can watch it free…you don’t pay a cent, unless you pay for Hulu plus, then you can watch on regular TV…..but to watch on your computer, it is totally free!!

We are watching plenty of ads. PP is making their money. These actors seem to be working hard and are doing their share to promote the shows. The actors and support staff shouldn’t be treated like second rate staff. I’m hoping OWN picks them up now that Oprah’s network is doing well. This is awful for the shows trying to get back on their feet. But the reality is that ABC was too quick to cancel the shows and they should try and buy them back from Prospect Park who is probably not equipt to handle them or another network like Bravo should buy them out. I think they’ve proven their success!

I was a union member for almost my whole career and a union officer for most of that time. I do hope very much that this dispute can be settled. PP/TOLN can’t afford at this time to pay full union wages. To keep these people employed they will have to earn less. Perhaps in time if the shows continue to be very successful they will earn more and more. Perhaps there can be something tied to earnings and an independent auditor look at their books every 2 years or year or something. PP has to make money in order to give raises and they have to be able to make money and keep some of it, not give it all as salary of course. That said, of course everyone is entitled to a living wage, but this is a special case, and I think everyone who signed on knew what it was. I hope everyone will agree on something mutually beneficial very soon.

Here we go with another issue behind the scenes. I hope this gets resolved ASAP. I don’t want the shows to be cancelled again. For some reason, I do believe that Disney/ABC has something to do with this. Prospect Park did file a lawsuit against them for destroying the OLTL characters and violating the agreement. There’s no collaboration and there’s been too many negative articles regarding the drama with Prospect Park and the relaunch of the shows. Hope this gets resolved and we can enjoy the shows and the storylines improve. I will say the relaunch of the OLTL is not living up to the high expectations. It ended with very high ratings and great storylines. Hope the new writers can resolve these issues and the drama behind the scenes are resolved quickly.

Whatever happens, if PP decides it’s too much a headache to produce soaps, at least they’ve PROVEN that the soap genre is NOT DEAD! If PP’s soap venture fails, it’ll be proven it was due to politicking and logistical non-sense and NOT lack of viewership!

If PP decides to bow out, I hope PP will continue to produce until a suitable replacement production company steps in.. ABC owns the soaps, so they’ll have to decide whether or not to pass them off to somebody else.

The genre is not dead.. the fact that AMC and OLTL are CONSISTENTLY top 10 hulu/iTunes shows, says everything ABC should have known.. there are viewers for this stuff. I would love to see some actual numbers, but if each episode is average anywhere close to 1 million unique views, the whole project was a smashing success!

If indeed the numbers are what PP says they are, they aren’t going to bow out or give up easily. Their shows on cable only average 1M viewers per episode, for an online show to put up number comparable to cable is a major f*cking deal. If PP isn’t up to it, there will be a line around the corner of production companies looking to produce these shows. If they are doing as well as PP says online, imagine what they could do on cable. I would estimate the soaps left half the fans when they moved, the fans unwilling or unable to view them on the internet.. which is why I believe if they stay online, they’ll be a major demand for the soaps to be seen as delays/repeats on cable.

It might not be with PP, but what I do know is somebody is going to see the numbers and hopefully they’ll have the resources to produce these shows as they should be.

I truly can not believe the inability of people on this site to read. The show is not cancelled and it will keep going 2 days a week. It isn’t coming back on your “rabbit ear” television. This is what it is, the future. This is a labor dispute, just as any other labor dispute. In that, both parties have a vested interest to work it out. Even though I am anti-union, they would certainly rather have some jobs, than none so while the hiatus is going, which was planned already in the schedule, they will negotiate. UGH..no wonder Soap Opera’s are dying off regular television programming…the viewers are idiots.

At this point, Prospect Park needs to reevaluate their financial standing and worry about paying these poor union members their dues and that is all. I understand that All My Children and One Life to Live fans want to keep their soaps no matter what, but, at this point, this is one in a long list of conflicts from PP. If they can work everything out and still keep producing new eps of AMC and OLTL, thats great for fans, but real life issues like this need to take precedent.

Negotiation tactic, work with it every day in Employee Benefits even in Right to Work States; however it does appear that Prospect Park does not need any more law suits and or delays and drama to keep their fans engaged even if they are no interruptions in what we view. I do believe however that this was known when they launched and should have been worked out ahead of time instead of the type of statements pushing back that Prospect Park can’t afford etc., and leaving the fans wondering what happens in August. It is new territory but there are other Online Soap Dramas that have continued on and it may benefit Prospect Park to figure out what or bring people to them with the experience .

No, because Prospect Park still has the licensing rights to the characters, whether or not the shows are on the air. The only way that would change would be if they remanded the rights back to ABC before the licensing period was up. Even then, though…I doubt Ron and Frank would switch characters yet again. Too much hassle, and fraught with pitfalls. Just not worth it, really, in my opinion. At least, not at this juncture.

I am glad that they point out there are 40 episodes to carry us threw this hiatus..so we essentially do not lose our shows stories and it sounds as tho they hope by august to continue on schedule so that we will not experience a “black out gap” while the issues are worked out. PP is doing all it can to provide the shows and insulate us from missing any episodes, all the while they work frantically to resolve the contract labor/legal issues.
