If you take a hard look at the facts; All My Children and One Life to Live have been record-setters and record breakers when it comes to winning Daytime Emmy Awards. Tom O’Neil, the awards guru from the L.A. Times took a look back and who won from these shows, and how many! (We have made some corrections to the below from his original post, as the Times piece had a few missing dates and wins!)
“All My Children was voted best drama series three times in 1998, 1994 and 1992. David Canary (Adam) won five times in the lead actor race: 1993, 1989, 1988 , 1986 and 2001. Darnell Williams (1985) took that category too. Among lead actress champs were Dorothy Lyman (1983) and the very first star to win the Daytime Emmy for acting: Mary Fickett (1972). Susan Lucci lost 18 times before ultimately prevailing. When she finally held the Emmy in her grasp at the podium in 1999, she said, “There’s something to be said for anticipation. It’s not all bad.”
It’s shocking, One Life to Live won best drama series only once (2002). Erika Slezak won lead actress six times: 2005, 1996, 1995, 1992, 1986, 1984. Other lead actress champs: Susan Haskell ( 2009), Judith Light (1981, 1980), Hillary B. Smith (1994) and Robin Strasser (1982). Lead actor victors: Al Freeman Jr. (1979), Robert Woods (1983).”
The bottom line here is: Some of the most deserving Best Actress winners in the history of soapdom, were or are, on One Life to Live! And, who can ever forget La Lucci’s win over at AMC! Let’s hope there are more accolades to come for OLTL and AMC at this year’s Daytime Emmys this June and next! Remember the series and the performers can still be eligible in 2012′s race too!
