In a night of personal stories shared by the contestants of Dancing with the Stars, there was none more touching and raw then the account of All My Children’s J.R. Martinez (Brot Monroe) telling to the cameras and his dance partner Karina Smirnoff his story of being severely injured and disfigured in the Iraqi war. But the story turned to heroics and how we all most solider on through our lives, no matter what is thrown at us.
Next, J.R. danced the Rumba with Smirnoff to a Tim McGraw tune, which the duo dedicated to the men and women in the service who did not make it home from war. There wasn’t many dry eyes left in the ballroom. When they finished, Martinez and Smirnoff were crying, along with judge Carrie Ann Inaba and many in the audience, who didn’t want to stop clapping and didn’t want to sit down.
“I’ve never cried in front of that many people before,” Martinez said after the show. “Karina was telling me that in order to get to that place, in order to pay tribute to the men and women in uniform, I needed to be an open book tonight. I needed to be willing to go to that place and tap into that time in my life when it wasn’t all pictures and fame and everyone caring — when I felt so alone.”
At the end of the night, J.R. remained in second place tied with Chynna Phillips with 26 points and just a point behind Ricki Lake with 27. The Results Show is tonight!
