84 September 8th, 2011 AMC’s Thorsten Kaye knocks the Two Todds Story & Marty’s exit on OLTL!

© JPI Studios

The uber-popular, Thorsten Kaye (Zach Slater of AMC) recently revealed to Deep Soap’s Sara Bibel, the surprising reason why he did not make a cameo on One Life to Live to reprise his role of Patrick Thornhart to usher out his real life wife and former on-screen partner, Daytime Emmy winner Susan Haskell ( Ex-Marty Saybrooke) a few months back.

Kaye stated on his decision not to return to wrap up the Patrick/Marty story: “I am not what you would call a team favorite. They wanted me to come in for one day or two days, but it wasn’t really to take Marty home, because that whole story was f—ed up anyway. It didn’t make sense to anybody. They wanted [Patrick] to bring the real Todd [Roger Howarth] back.  I said, ‘You know what? I don’t get it. You asked your audience to [accept] this new actor that you’ve had for the last eight years. You have said he is your Todd. Everyone accepted it. 8 years later you go, No, idiots. That wasn’t Todd.’ That doesn’t make sense to me. That works on the radio. You can’t do it on TV. If you need someone to guide him in, I’m not going to do it.”

Kaye also let his thoughts be known on how they exited Haskell off the canvas! “To get rid of Susan in the way that they did made no sense. I just don’t think it was fair, and it was completely unnecessary. If you’re doing something like that, at least have it help the story. I think all actors, you get to a point where you want to make sure that you being there makes a difference. When they say we’re just going to take you out of this equation, that’s a tough thing.”

So what do you think? Do you agree with Thorsten’s sentiments on the Two Todds and the exit of Marty Saybrooke without seeing the real Patrick Thornhart? Let us know!

He is exactly right! I hated the way they wrote out Marty. She deaserved better. They had more time than AMC to find a better way to end the story. As for the two Todds, it took me a long time to accept Trevor but I finally did (till he pushed a pregnant Starr down the stairs). He deserved better also!

personally, i liked the story, and as much as i like Trevor, Roger IS TODD. I just wish Trevor’s Victor could have lived. As for Mr Kaye, i hated Patrick, remember he killed Blair’s baby and didnt want to save Starr. I personally feel like his comments are simply sour grapes lol, they didnt want him as a solo package and he was butt hurt. I only hate that Marty wasnt killed by Natalie and David brought Zack back

I agree that the Marty exit was terrible. Susan was amazing because she is a pro, but it was terrible what they did to her character. Murderer? No way. Off balance….ok. I disagree with the Todd story. I think it has been brilliant. Only regret is the loss of Trevor, but that was his decision.

  4. Stephen Parker says:

Given the complex and detailed history of Marty Saybrooke and her valuable contributions to the One Life to Live storyline I feel that the writers’ exit strategies for her character were decidedly shabby and undeniably disrespectful. Basically it involved the deconstruction of a formerly vibrant, positive entity transformed into a delusional, homicidal broken shell. Saybrooke’s sacrificial lamb disintegration smacked of profound desperation and annoying artifice on the part of forces behind the scenes. Marty’s worthy achievements over the years included spotlighting the plight of people suffering from the disease known as lupus, the struggle of evolving attitudes of tolerance, understanding, and acceptance of gay relationships, a rape survivor’s ongoing nightmares and triumphs, and the contributions of a gifted therapist’s service to clients. To compress that rich history into a discarded hunk of crushed metal like an old car in a junkyard is shameful. Beginning with Marty’s faux death in Ireland (when the van she and Cole were held captive blew up) Ms. Saybrooke’s character devolved bit by bit until she became a pathetic train wreck. And for what end? To simply dispose of her to move another plot (the “Two Todds”) into place, which in its course character assassinated another fine actor’s complex, lengthy, and rich portrayal for the promotion of a pseudo-mysterious storyline which apparently dictated another unnecessary sacrifice (Trevor St. John’s swan song as Todd-into-Victor Manning). Admittedly I have enjoyed the dual Todd developments but I am not unaware of the wreckage and waste wreaked on the literary landscape as ratings and sensationalism trumped Emmy-quality writing and due respect for talented actors.

Wow! I read this, praising the insightful accuracy of the author, so glued to each word, that when I finally look up in order to have a name to go along with the brilliance… alas, it’s my dear buddy, the Bard-of-Sullivan! LOL! You’ve summarized beautifully, Stephen, and eulogized our dearly departed Marty perfectly!!! Cheers, mate! ;-) While noting is impossible, I can’t forsee a reunion with the Haskell-Kaye’s, but feverently wish for reconciliation with TSJ & Robin Strasser. I just hope Tina & Cord aren’t deconstructed as well…

I could not agree with you more! I will NEVER EVER forgive Ron Carlivati and Frank Valentini for what they did to the character of Marty ! Marty was troubled NEVER crazy! She overcame so much in her life, losing her parents, being alone , a gang rape! And what puts her over the edge? Losing John Mcbain?? Marty interacted with everyone! Where was Nora and Vicky?
Marty was one of the greatest characters ever created, and Susan Haskell is beyond brilliant as an actress. Her chemistry with Roger Howarth was off the charts. The fact that after 14 years the writers FINALLY had both actors and chose not to have them in a scene together, is almost sac religious ! They could have drawn on so much history with old Todd and new Todd. Instead they destroyed this beautiful character and AMAZING actress, for their own selfish reasons. I applaud Thorsten for standing by Susan. Personally I think saying bringing back “the real Todd” was a smokescreen . If Susan was still on, he would too. But I think Thorsten was just so disgusted, that they would fire a two time daytime Emmy winner! I will never watch anything those two write or produce again.
They had a gem and just threw it away.

I think that they totally had it planned out that “Men of 21″ were going to responsible for the whole two Todd’s story line. Personally, I would have preferred that the “Men of 21″ were involved rather than having Irene Manning alive and the Todd’s be twins. I think the twins story is over used and I was sort of disappointed that this is the way the story was twisted.

My thoughts on Susan Haskell? Well, she was shafted and deserved a better send off. Actually, I think she still needs to be with the show. I am beyond ecstatic that Roger Howarth has returned, but I want to see him in scenes with characters he had immense chemistry with…Nora, Bo, Viki, Blair, and sadly the missing Marty… I think getting rid of Susan as Marty was a huge mistake…story could have still been told.

I LOVE Roger and Trevor. The way the story unfolded was AWESOME, BUT I do agree that the way Susan was handled was not classy, neither was the way they handled Robin or Trevor! I TOTALLY would LOVE to have a Victor Lord Jr. in Llanview. I would have accepted it and been all about getting the twins to interact! There is enough of the Lord fortune to go around. Bringing Irene back from the dead, having HER be the catalyst in all this was AWESOME Sudz! Having her be behind Patrick Thornhart, Tea’s brother involved, it all made crazy Soapy Sense! Maybe in the beginning before unfolding it all I can see how Kaye would not want to be involved. I understand his sentiment and being disgruntled with ABC and what they are doing as a whole, why would he want to have any part in that.

I don’t agree with any of the stuff Frons is doing. I hope he digs his own “Chewy Revolution” grave. I will not be tuning into ABC after OLTL goes off the air! I am thrilled with what Prospect Park seems to be doing and will support Royal Pains and any project that PP does because they seem to listen to a very loud fan base! Would Kaye ever work with Susan at PP, maybe John finds Marty and Patrick and brings them back. Maybe Cole could even have his WHOLE family around and get released from prison….oh it could be an awesome story! LONG LIVE OLTL!!

Carri and Thorsten are so right! Get Susan and Trevor back on OLTL, there is so much more LIFE TO LIVE for them!

I’ve been thinking about the Cole story and how he shot Eli in “cold blood.” Okay, now, hasn’t anybody thought that he killed Eli because of temporary sanity? THe thought his child and the mother of his child (love of his life) were killed by Eli! I don’t think Cole shoud’ve been thrown in prison. He definitely should have an “re-trial” – I think that’s what it’s called. Yes, Tea should throw herself into her work and file an appeal for Cole and get him out of prison!

You Go Thorsten!!! Nice to see that someone closely connected to this understands how the viewers must feel. Cause I feel betrayed with the departure of Trevor St. John as Todd Manning….I’m sorry, he will always be Todd for me. He took on an impossible role and made us believe it and accept it….then the writers decide no that’s good any more, let’s bring back Roger. After 8 years, that’s a slap in the face to the actor that gave us 8 great years of amazing work and a slap in the face to the fans who grew to love TSJ as Todd. And Susan definitely deserved better than what she got. They turned her into Hannah Jr. and had her become a murderer and psychopath….One would think that they could have respected her a little bit better than that.

The radio? How does that even make sense — this was a plastic surgery story to begin with! It actually IS plausible, hilariously enough.

And Howarth’s return did not dictate St. John’s departure. He didn’t step back in one day and take the role back. That’s why it was “The Two Todds” story, and it’s obviously too bad they’re not both there to keep it going, but they COULD have kept it going. And in fact had both of them on for a few months. He makes it sound like a situation like Lucky on GH and it just isn’t.

I completely agree with him about Marty’s exit, though. That was just poor storytelling. Very poor.

I think it could only have been better with Susan Haskell staying on as Marty though. Her exit was strange to say the least, but again I was really surprised to see see Marty get off scott-free with her crimes. Haskell is such a great actress I hope they can bring her back as soon as the online version starts.

He’s correct, of course, but the David Hayward Resurrection Show formerly known as AMC is just as ludicrous. The potential of having RH, TSJ, Susan Haskell & Thorsten on the same screen was horribly wasted and obviously undervalued by all but we viewers :( Basically, ALL of these characters have been decimated, leaving a sole RH to rise from the ashes. If Prospect Park has any more miracles to present us with, a rethinking of this storyline would be greatly appreciated. Irene Manning indeed! Feh!–I SAW her die from cancer in the 70′s when I was 8 years old! LOL!

I am so glad that Thorsten stuck up for Susan/Marty! Marty’s exit was horrible (she spent the entire hour with the fake Todd), and then we get this non-sensical off-screen return of Patrick with a body double, and a really cheap shot of the real Todd right behind Marty just as she leaves.
The character destruction over Marty in the 6 or so months leading up to her exit was despicable. Marty is one of OLTL’s most iconic and popular characters and did NOT deserve that, especially when most viewers see as a heroine, especially after her ’93 rape storyline.
Just so insulting, and while I would have loved an on-screen Patrick/Marty reunion, I am glad Thorsten stuck to his principles.

For me Susan Haskell’s portrayal of Marty in the early years was bar none.
Loved her….I did not watch the show after Susan and Thorsten’s departure in ’97.
Life happened and I got busy…..as well Rogers’ Todd was not the same without Marty to play off….he destroyed her and in the process destroyed himself.
I have since caught up with many of the episodes I have missed via YouTube.
And rejoined watching the show in late January this year….I could never buy Trevor St.John as Todd although he is a very fine actor.
But what really upset me was what the writers had done to Marty.
Susan Haskell is a tremendously gifted actor who garnered 2 Emmy wins,
I was so appalled that the writers turned her into a psychotic ,murdering wacko…..they really destroyed her – there’s no way she could come back from that…..and then they fired her,5 days later they announced Rogers return.
I think all die hard Todd/Marty fans were hoping for a screen reunion. It would have been great stuff ….as they now share a grandchild.
Then news of the cancellation…..I think some us are still hoping, sadly I don’t think a reunion of these two fine performers will happen.
In watching Rogers scenes as the now confirmed real Todd….when he talks about Marty it almost seems as though he were performing to the camera as if she were there.
I’m glad OLTL will continue – as to the quality it will produce that remains to be seen.

I’m sorry but I agree with Thosten Kaye 100% on both accounts. Marty’s exit was done is such a crap ass way. That story could have been handled so much better. OLTL had an amazing actress (Susan Haskell) on their hands and instead of using her to better the show and the storylines they just shoved her out the door.
As for the 2 Todd story, I am just disgusted in how it played out. I’ve always been a Todd fan from the first day I started watching OLTL, at that time Roger Howarth was playing the part. I was disappointed when he decided to leave the role and chose to jump ship to CBS. Trevor St. John came on as Todd and I was like Roger Howarth who? Trevor St. John made Todd his own. For eight years his portrayal of Todd has been one of my driving forces for turning in every day. I love the dark side of Todd he brought and the light and funny side!! And when Florencia Lozano returned as Tea, the chemistry between her and Trevor was unbelievable and I couldn’t help but fell in love with Todd and Tea!! (Was never a big fan of them when Roger played Todd) As soon as I heard that Roger Howarth was returning I knew Trevor St. John was going to get screwed over. And what do you know he was. The role of Todd was taken away and given back to Roger and we told that the Todd we’ve been watching for 8 years is actually Victor Jr. As infuriating as I was by this I was dealing with it because Trevor St. John was still part of the show but that didn’t last long as we all know Victor has been killed off. There was so much story to be told here. Trevor St. John will always be Todd for me. I found the dismissal of his 8 years of playing Todd disrespect to Trevor and to the fans. I used to tune in every day, I don’t anymore.

By not having TK appear, it left the story open for them both to resurrect. But since he admits he is not a team player, I doubt he would return to OLTL. Surprised he returned to AMC but all those dead folks returning are implausible storylines. Susan’s character was written into a corner and the producers/writers preferred to go with the FORD brothers. There were ways to let her character shine but the powers to be preferrred to push her out like so many good character on the show such as Marcie and A/Michaell, not to mention the newly minted gay couple. The Cole and Marty departures were throwaway storylines and should go down as some of the worst writing. The two Todds was also a dumb storyline — seen worse but a waste of time since the show was winding down its ABC run. Sorry, but I always preferred Roger; Trevor was excellent but Roger REIGNS as Todd. And it looks like this time around Todd might be more nuanced.

I greatly applaud Thorsten’s courage to speak out and the self evident deep artistic principles he possesses. ABC-OLTL showed a complete lack of character, respect and the loyalty that was due to the fabulous actor Trevor St. John who gave them so many years of extremely good and often times Magnificent performances. It was not necessary, at this time, to resurrect the actor, Roger Howarth, who initially created the role but, absent for 8Years. This is the time at the end of the Llandview story to bring wonderful dramatic climax for all characters, as we the fans have known these people, not trash character history. Trevor’s 8Years portraying Todd evolved the character into a new man, a different life, and this is the Todd we fans recognized as Todd; TSJ/Todd became and should have been the concluding history of Todd for the ending of the TV-show. The Prospect Park production will be their version of OLTL and with mostly a different audience, a Internet world! It is there, IMO, that new and sudden opposing changes can be introduced!

Many actors have played Hamlet and given their version of the character since its initial creation by the first actor who portrayed the role but, the different versions never necessitated trashing the new performers artistic work, merely because they were not the original.

Regardless, how Trevor lifted the 2-Todds storyline to dramatic heights by the infusion of his Superb Acting skills and persona, the story still trashed his Todd creation, unnecessarily. Show business is indeed a Business but it is also a collaboration of artists giving their hearts to their work in their creations and having faith that the producers, like ABC-OLTL have respect to the marriage of artist-producer. Watching what ABC did to TREVOR puts a horrible stain on art! But, it is quite evident ABC does not care!

I think he’s giving a slightly pompous take. Having TSJ’s Todd be an imposter is, IMO, perfectly in line with soap stories. My only problem with it is that I would have liked TSJ to have stayed on as well as RH. If TK reflected on some of his storylines on AMC – Red Rock, anyone?, and the current back from the dead en masse storyline – the 2 Todds is no more out there than they are.

He’s right about Mary’s exit. To turn her into a deranged serial killer was just messed up.
It’s such a shame for OLTL to have lost such a talented actress portraying such an important character, and it was done in a particularly horrid manner. But the way they were writing Marty for her last six months was pretty bad all around. It was obvious they either didn’t know what to do with her or didn’t care.
I wish TSJ had stuck around. He’s the only Todd I knew, and I loved to loathe him. And I thought that he and RH had some great scenes together. Hopefully, the rumors are true and he’ll be back when PP takes over.

I wish Thorsten the best….but the guy is obviously smarting over what happened to his wife. And, he’s also obviously a legend in his own mind. The screen can use a rest from him for a while.

To each his own. I think TK did an okay job with the writing he was handed for the Zach Slater character – and the writers at AMC didn’t do that character (or any others) any favors over the years.

But he’s only an expert in his own mind.

    Waltina replied

If you think Thorsten is a legend in his own mind, what do you think of Roger.
You think he is the second coming of the best actor on soaps. This was an actor who didn’t have a job and then Frons and OLTL decided to stab Trevor in the back. But remember what goes around comes around. Maybe some fans who cheered what they did, this could happen to you own your job. Throwing Trevor out the door was the reason I stopped watching when when it was announced Roger was coming back, Trevor saw the writing on the wall. And some fans need to stop saying he “he was going to leave any way, or this was his own fault”. How would you feel if after you had worked on a job for 8yrs, you are replaced by the former person who had the job, and your co-workers who saw this man every day NEVER SAID A WORD IN IS SUPPORT . It had to come from a past castmate of the show.

While I agree that Marty’s exit was seriously flawed, the destruction of Marty Saybrook stated way before she left. Maybe TK forgot that Susan herself replaced another actress as Marty this time around…an actress who finally started to make the role her own and had great chemistry with John McBain/Michael Easton (and let’s face it, he does not have much chemistry with most women he gets partnered with!!) but they replaced her with the “real” Marty. So where does he get off trashing the return of RH? Both actors would have been on the show together if TSJ hadn’t already said he was leaving…so no one lost their job like CC did when SH came back.

So instead TK went back to that hot mess that is AMC and David’s ridiculous ressurection s/l…now there’s good storytelling!! (insert sarcastic tone) It’s understandable that he is hurt, pissed, angry, whathaveyou about his wife’s loss of her job. But the 2 Todds s/l has nothing to do with that. I never usually have a problem with the comments actors make about things, but it seems like every time TK opens his mouth, he sounds like a huge egomaniac. I for one was glad he joined AMB (which I stopped watching months ago) as opposed to OLTL (which I love) Let’s hope he stays away :)

Sorry but the David ressurrection is a billion times better than the moronic insulting tale of two Todd’s. His character on AMC was quite popular and magically and had a huge fanbase. On OLTL he played a babykilling terrorist. I will say this that the talent of TSJ and RH rose about the stupidity of that story but it is far worst a story and disrespectful to the viewers IMO much moreso than the massive return from the dead. I mean an 8 year imposter how ridiculous. I know some people are so glad RH is back they are willingt o overlook it I prefer TSJ but adore RH as well. If the story was better written I wouldnt have mind at all but this crap is proof RC was tanking the show on purpose.

We saw Dixie in heaven, now she’s walking around PV. That’s not insulting to the viewers? Todd getting plastic surgery to look like Walker Lawrence was insulting to me & i never believed for a second Trevor was playing Todd. NEVER. This story was needed to explain all the OOC things “Todd” was doing the last 8 yrs. Trevor could have played HIS OWN CHARACTER. One HE created, instead he split. That’s not RH’s fault & the only reason TK has a problem with any of it is because he was being used to bring back Roger. He’s standing up for his wife? Pretty sure his wife will be returning for a bit. So why isn’t she mad? Notice he said, he can’t speak for Susan. Not everyone is buying into the BS.

    Willie T replied

True but those above things are well establish lore for soaps when you watch you sign on for people returning from the dead. As for seeing her in heaven did we really or did we see Adam’s mind playing tricks on him because he was guilty over his sins. Was uncle Palmer really seeing Dixie in heaven or was god simply generous in granting him the one thing he said he wanted mroe than anything.
As to OLTL again established lore for the gendre people get their faces changed to look like other people all the time. Aslo. regardless to whether or not he is Todd or Victor the fact remains that was unchanged he did in fact get his face changed to go from looking like one man to the other. So in the some are able to overlook that fact because in the end they got the ending they wanted which man is Todd isn’t my problem my problem is them writing a show that invalidates the last 8 years like TSJ or hate him he was Todd and they took that way and the power of the rapemance story that they got all those awards for.
As to OOC GMAFB no way he’s only doing is directed of him. He was Todd and the irony was that the time we had of them together they acted completely alike only TSJ is less violent. AS ot him speaking for Susan I never said he was I said he was standing up for her and himself. I am sure as a man he hated that his charactr was constantly used to kiss the rear end of the man who raped his wife. That no matter what horrid things Todd did to him he had to always look the other way. AS to Susan retuning nothing on that has surfaced but if she does return that is inherently her choice to make. I don’t see where that would preclude his opinion plus AMC was offering a longer stay. AS to what people aren’t buying for me it’s the vile sicophant three time murdering (now 4) rapist as the victim and hero and TSJ no murder no rapes but was in fact himself raped who was brain washed as the bad guy. As much as I like RH I won’t drink the kool aid.

That is why I LOVE TK. He told the trutth!!! That idiot Ron Caravali slapped SH in the face on her way out and slapped TSJ in the face on the way out and spit in the audience’s face with an 8 year imposter story. How this guy still has a job is amazing. Oh that’s right Brian Frons was tanking the show on purpose!! So glad that Thorsten Kaye spoke and the irony is that he never worked with TSJ but obviously either appreciated his work or thinks it is a mistake to slap your audience in the face. Kudos this man. I respect the man even more now.

In between slapping Susan Haskell in the face, then slapping Trevor St. John in the face, and spitting at the audience, poor Ron Carlivati barely has time to write. But write he does, and does it superlatively. OLTL’s ratings have been increasing every week – that’s not exactly an indication that the show stinks now, is it?
OLTL undoubtedly has been helped by having a writer who clearly loves the show and who KNOWS it, whereas AMC has had to suffer through one bad writer after another, and the continual interference of Frons and Co.

TK is no saint and he’s no villian. He’s an actor who has a certain popularity, speaking his mind about his wife’s old job, and his old employer. It’s hard not to think that his bitterness towards OLTL might have to do with him not being quite as valuable to them as he probably assumed. TK evidently has a healthy opinion of himself – what actor doesn’t? – and he probably felt bruised that the show decided RH was a better bang for their buck than he was.

    And, they were right.

I can’t agree his character was only on a few months maybe a year or two at most. He was never woven into that show why would he think that he would go back their. i think he was defended his wife. Nothing more nothing less. Do I think he is more valuable than RH on OLTL no but I’d take ZAch on AMC over RH on OLTL any day of the week and twice on the weekends. But I just was never that into Todd not that I don’t appreciate RH. He just wore me out. I don’t think he ever cared much for OLTL. AS to RC, the ratings increased because they have the two most talented actors on daytime selling the worst story ever told. I do agree Fronsian interference may play a role (probably the bigger) but I can’t think of any story he wrote with the notable exception of Kish that was even halfway decent. This man wrote the GEX SUX ExPRESS, the rapemance and worst of all the 1968 story. How he stays employed is beyond me.

  37. Skyla says:

I love Thorsten Kaye and I feel he is absolutely right about everything. They did Susan Haskell wrong and they way they wrote out Marty after so many years was ridiculous. And I’m not a fan of the way the did Trevor St. John either. He was a consummate professional and is an incredible actor who always supported the show but they tossed him aside for Roger Howarth, a man who left them high & dry because he didn’t want his character to be redeemed and refused to have love scenes with any actress but Kassie DePaiva because he thought it would make Todd too much of a leading man people would like. RH constantly showed that he didn’t much care for the show as a whole but him coming back is supposed to be great for the audience over TSJ who not only actually seemed to truly care about the show but is a far superior actor. And maybe this shouldn’t matter but TSj is alot better to look at too over RH and for that matter so is TK. And even now the writers continue to throw TSJ and his portrayal of Todd under the bus and try to rewrite history by making digs about him never being there for Viki or her family which is completely untrue or trying to build up RH’s Todd like he was oh so wonderful & perfect. I say bravo to Thorsten for recognizing how disrespectful the show was to not only his long-time partner Susan Haskell but Trevor St. John as well and not wanting to be a part of it.

Great comments. I supported Roger’s decision to leave One Life after they decided to redeem Todd. The redemption of rapist has been done too much on daytime. And his gang rape story was critically acclaimed and did much to shine the spotlight on the darkness of sexual violence.
But I completely concur with you that the One Life brass threw Trevor St John and Susan Haskell under the bus primarily for ratings sake. They showed both actor’s no respect and gave Roger the moon and the stars. I never accepted Trevor in the role of Todd, but that’s besides the point. He had become super popular among fans and despite my personal distaste for him in the role, I can see that he was an oustanding performer who worked hard to make the role his own. But the execs were willing to toss him aside at the drop of Roger Howarth’s hat. Like I always say the entertainment business is very brutal and corrupt. Its all about greed and shallowness. SMH.

OLTL’s ratings went up the week before the cancelation and have stayed up. As bad as the story is I will give full credit to RH and TSJ easily the two best actors in daytime ability to sell it but they rating did in fact drop a hundred thousand after the big gag and puke reveal of the 8 year invalidation.

Agreed… Why Tk is a great actor.. we now have excepted him as Zach..I think it would have been fair to give Susan (Marty) a better ending … And for both Tea and Blair to have a happy ending. with both Victor and Todd… that being said .. Glad that Roger is back and sad that Trevor was killed off like that…. and the writer has certainly made One Life to Live a show one does not want to miss

The show was going to be cancelled with my man Trevor on the show. Now you fans of Roger he’s back and the show is stilling being cancelled. You mentioned about the great rating the show is getting, again it wasn’t enough to keep OLTL on ABC. So your wonderful rating means nothing.

There are a legion of fans who did not accept Trevor as Todd. I am one of them. His recast is one of the main reasons I quit One Life to Live. Roger was ground breaking and irreplaceable.
Trevor is a great actor but so many of us could not accept him in the Todd role. And Cartini made is much worse when they wrote that horrible amnesia plot for marty that had her having sex with the man who instigated her gang rape!
And people call Ron Carlavati a great writer after staging that mess? Come on! Roger himself originally left One Life because he didnt want to see the Todd character redeemed into a cuddly happy go lucky guy.
Again this is no insult to Trevor. He’s a great actor, but some roles should just not be recast.

It was basically all to please the “great” Roger Howarth, even though Trevor St. John did most of the work in this whole thing.

I wasn’t even a Marty fan but her exit was stupid and definitely not warranted.

Cool comments. I find it scary how one life fans worships Cartini ( Ron Carlavati and Frank Valentini). They are complete hacks who turned a once ground breaking daytime drama into a cartoon!
The 2 Todd story was one of the stupidest things Ive seen since Casey the Alien on GH in the 90s, lol. I find it so disappointing that millions of fans just sit by the idiot box ( thats what my teacher called TV back in high school) and allow soap writers to fry their brains. They fully accept whatever implausible nonsense comes on their screen and they clamor for more?
What happened to intelligent, family, romance driven stories? They died yrs ago. Now we’re left with tabloid, implausible nonsense that arouses the audience but has no substance. And outside of that we have shirtless, brainless male bimbos, and older vets being fired or benched. No wonder soap viewership is down and networks are pulling the plug. SMH.

I couldn’t agree more with Thorsten’s assessment, though I think it could be a blanket idictment on the state of soaps in general these days. Characters acting out of character and recasts not comporting with the character’s past history are just some others I think are wrong with soaps today. Susan Haskell’s exit from OLTL is what is wrong with soaps. To take a character like Marty and reduce her to pablum is disgusting and dehumanizing to women on daytime television. Making them out to be appendages of their men, not as solid beings in their own right.

One only has to look at Mr. Kaye’s soap opera AMC and it’s disgusting handling of the ‘groundbreaking lesbian love affair’ to see just how really low the genre has sunk. In a better day this story would have been handled with dignity and realism. Instead, Bianca was reduced to a mincing idiot and Reese was made to be some kind of Anne Heche angry bi-sexual with no real direction.

I look on GH where the current Carly portrayer looks nothing like the previous actresses who have played the character and believes that character growth is a character flaw. I can only say that at some point someone has to buy a clue as to what is wrong. Ken Corday has recently gone about making a drastic reboot of DOOL, however, getting rid of beloved characters to make room for fan faves isn’t the answer unless the writing is there and solid.

I fully disagree with Thorsten Kaye’s sentiments.

The Two Todd’s storyline was very well-played and worthwhile. The only disappointment is that it didn’t last longer and TSJ isn’t still in the picture. The Two Todd’s storyline, set-up, and potential was fantastic; however, Victor’s murder was lame.

Regarding Matry: Marty’s character was always a useless mess. She was first a victimizer full of hate speech against Billy and was cruel to Andrew, Megan, Viki, etc. Then Marty was a rape victim in a story that seemed geared to garner her unsympathetic character some sympathy. Then she became a poet’s muse in a painfully boring storyline with Patrick. Then there was recast Marty, the mom of Cole. Then SH returned and Matry went back to being evil crazy Marty, which is how the character started out. Marty was always just a plot point, and was never essential to the show. It annoyed me that no one bothered to remember Marty had lupus, the character’s main feature upon her introduction. During her last months on the show, Marty was complete useless, and I’m so happy she finally was ushered out of Llanview.

There is little to no regard for the show the actors and certainly not the fans of daytime dramas. I believe most fans don’t understand the day that it was announced that Roger Howarth was coming back spelled doom for Trevor. They had no intentions of keeping him on the show, they had the savior of the world of soaps coming back. And I’m so sick and tired of Roger fans saying it was Trevors fault, he wanted to leave then at the last moment changed his mind. Why would he come back to a show where he was disrespected by the PTB, not was cast member spoke up for him, fans showing they only cared about him if he was playing another character other than Todd, and the great Roger was coming back to his role as Todd. A man who had thumbed his nose at the show and castmates so many times by leaving and coming back. It is my hope the Trevor never comes back to this show because he can do better, and he has better range as an actor. Also no actor should be slapped in the face the way he was. Then add injure to insult kill him off the air because he can’t be on the show with the great Roger Howarth. What is so funny about all of this is with the great rating the show is getting, it’s still being cancelled and General Hospital will still be on ABC for a several more months.
One would think with the King coming back and the rating so good ABC would consider keeping One Life To Live on the Air. Just something to think about.
Good Luck Trevor whatever you’re doing.

I enjoyed the two Todds storyline….however it was far too brief. The big reveal that they were in fact twin brothers.
And the trashing of Marty and firing of Susan….she should have been around for Rogers’ return.
They could have had Dr.Buhari mixed up with this rogue agency and had her spiking Marty’s meds to make her do crazy things and make her paranoid.
Then her character could be redeemed.
Could you just imagine her reaction to two Todds.
And the realization that she didn’t sleep with the man who had raped her.
Too much good opportunity wasted….and the talents of two great actors wasted.

It was a prime example of how I say that Cartini dumbs down the soap genre. Irene Manning running a CIA organization holding Todd hostage, give me a break. Im surprised she didnt show up alive after Todd shot her. The entire story was lame.
And the way they completely ruined Marty’s character was ridiculous. Like i always say Cartini write soaps like Tabloid newspapers. Thank you Stephen for summing up Cartini in a nutshell. They are all about sensationalism at the cost of substance and respect for the actors and the intellect of the viewers! They do sensational thing after sensational thing. But they never stop to think..wait a minute, could this really happen? Or is this true to the characters and the history of the show? Is this intelligent? lol.
From what Ive seen of their work on GH they havent changed. And I really hate their take on GH. But what I hate more is that in today’s generation, the viewers themselves are more than willing to put their intellect on the shelf to consume this drivel. Its truly and insult to a genre that took risks to explore social issues at a time when society was afraid to speak of them. The industry, the viewers and everyone seems to have forgotten that soaps broke new ground in the days when TV itself was still experimental.
But now all we want is explicit sense, sensational fluffy stories and drivel. Agnes Nixon, Irna Phillips and Bill Bell are turning over in their graves.
