86 September 13th, 2013 As KATIE Soon Flatlines, Will Katie Couric Replace Barbara Walters On THE VIEW? Walters Now Denies It!

Courtesy/ABC

It’s been a whirlwind morning for daytime talk show hosts, Katie Couric and Barbara Walters! First came the New York Daily News piece that related that the end of Katie Couric’s low rated talker, Katie could mean that Couric would then be moved by ABC to the spot on The View panel currently held by Barbara Walters, who is currently in her final season with the morning talk series.

The N.Y Daily News report tipster said in regards to KATIE, “They realize it will never be a success and ratings are down drastically from last season. The ABC development team has been working nonstop on new talk show pilots and are looking at high-profile names to replace her, hopefully by January.”   Another source added, “Katie may ultimately replace Barbara when she retires.”

Next, via Deadline.com, Barbara Walter denies the report that Couric will be replacing her, but the piece does allude to the fact that a denial from Walters, can often mean it is the truth! Just look at Walters track record when she denied she was retiring, and then later announced she was stepping down from The View, etc.   Walters said about Katie Couric, “She is always welcome as a guest on The View and I was recently a guest on her show, but there is no truth to the rumor that she will be taking my place on The View.”

But the bigger question is this … Katie is faltering, The Revolution faltered, the whole ABC Daytime line-up shake up that axed All My Children and One Life to Live did not work in synergy as they had hoped, and the audiences did not support this change, and the revised programming day-part.   So, what do you think of the news of Katie taking over for Barbara? Do you think that is where she will go? Do you think it’s sweet justice that ABC is seemingly, according to the NY Daily News, “working non-stop on new talk show pilots”, when they had two soaps that had an audience?  Are you so infuriated with the whole situation?  Comment away!

So we lose two soaps, Katie gets all the money anyway. 1000s of jobs dumped by ABC for Katie so they’ll put her on the last semi-tolerable thing left and wreck that….brilliant.

Its comical, ABC thought talk shows would do well, the only one that is, is The Chew, AMC and OLTL will not be back but this will ONLY ignite the flames more now, ill sit back and watch the side show. As for Katie going on the View its as bad as it get.

I disagree, I think with the success AMC and OLTL had online, this will force ABC to rethink their colossal mistake! Soaps have rebounded online and on broadcast TV. Take into account the lawsuit, fan demand, and the failure of their current line up…I bet we will see a familiar line up return!!!

Cannot stand Katie & I’d like to see her go away……far, far away. As for ABC, while I never watched AMC or OLTL, as a Days [and therefore soap fan], I’m enjoying all the problems that they’ve brought on themselves by cancelling those 2 soaps. Maybe they should just admit their mistakes and bring them both back.

The really sad thing about all this is STILL seeing responses like this YEARS after the soaps were cancelled. You know what you sound like? A jilted teenager who won’t accept the fact that your boyfriend dumped you in high school. So even though it’s years later, you’re going to hold your breath and turn blue until he comes back, except he has moved on, gotten married and had kids with someone else.

MOVE ON. GET OVER IT. It’s just a TV show.

Well said. I will not watch Katie anywhere.

You are so right they can keep putting on talk shows and I will never watch. I could care less where Katie goes. What I do care about is when AMC and OLTL will be back on line or even better yet on cable TV or both at the same time so we could watch when ever we want. JUST BRING THEM BACK. I have been watching GH and enjoying it very much, there could come a time that people will give up hoping AMC AND OLTL will come back and will PP keep taking it off line when ever they want.

I never watched that witch (couric) talk show and knew it would tank. Loved how she waltzed over to ABC and felt she could call the shots by deciding when GH’s new time slot would be to give her the best advantage and now GH is the best its ever been and she’s going down the tubes. Poetic justice, really.

They can put on 100 talk shows , try over and over again and it will never be as much $$$$$ as the Soaps that is why even though they know that it was a BIG mistake ABC will never bring them back.
There almighty 18 to 49 AGE GROUPis the bottom line and always will be. PP came through the first time we need them to keep it going. SO WHEN WILL THEY BE BACK ONLINE that is the BIG question .

I was speaking about a talk show NOW, on the main network in the afternoon, not one that was on a cable channel own by ABC earlier in the decade and was on prior to ABC cancelling their own soaps. I just thought it would be funny if after cancelling two of their soaps the only talk show that that might be embraced by bitter fans was a talk show about soaps– I was going for irony, but thanks for the input.

    Sal Piscioneri replied

  7. Talisyn says:

I’d say an hour slot on ABC has opened up, and I know 2 half-hour shows that would fit that bill quite nicely – with a proven track record that ABC has yet to replace in numbers. Put AMC and OLTL back on TV. Better if the soaps could air and still keep their distance from ABC suits, something, syndication, IDK, but Bring them Back.

    Reply

    Sal Piscioneri replied

Bring them back in half hour format………….it will work…. or create a new soap opera with the AMC & OLTL cast limited of course. Look how good AMC did without Erica.

well they would be a lot cheaper than they used to be now that prospect park is producing them

    Kate replied

AMC would have done better with Erika. However, it did as well as it did because it had some fan favorites return. I ,as well as many others, hope for her return at some point. Since PP owns the right to AMC and OLTL, ABC can’t bring them back easily and they don’t want to. It would certainly bring some viewers back to daytime tv.

  8. Patience DePhazio says:

Brianna Frons caused this. As a result, the whole ABC Daytime lineup faltered. No one wanted Katie Couric, THE REVULSION, and THE SPEW. The ABC audience wanted quality (re: AMC and OLTL), not silliness.

  10. Lisa says:

I firmly believe now that the cancellations of AMC and OLTL have been totally blown out of proportion by the soap media. I’m sure ABC has zero regrets. With all the so-called talk that soap fans are boycotting the network, ABC’s ratings don’t show any direct evidence at all that a boycott is harming them in any way. And even if Katie fails, ABC is not getting that hour back from local affiliates, who will simply plug in other syndicated and local shows there. They wanted to downsize their daytime schedule. This idea that Katie’s failure will bring back AMC and OLTL to ABC is all wishful thinking. Dream on. Besides, looking at the numbers on OWN/Hulu, it’s pretty clear that this groundswell of support for the shows and genre is not there. Other than a small, loud, loony fan base that could not accept when they were over, nobody cares anymore.

Understand already that The Chew is a success for ABC. It’s at least on par with what AMC did in its final year on the network and it’s much cheaper to produce. That’s a fact, like it or not. And I do not buy that The Revolution failed last year because of any kind of silly boycott. That’s a bunch of nonsense already. It was simply a poorly produced/executed program with a concept that an audience could not relate to. In the immediate aftermath, GH was the safest available option to put there.

    jimh(leave it to beaver) replied

A lot of people do care…as for OWN its a low rated cable station…the reboots would work better on tvgc, lifetime or some other more popular cable channel and shown later in the evening like 6pm to 9pm. Not many recieve own so that is what keeps the numbers down…if these soaps were truly over PP would have never listen to us small looney fan base and brought them back!!!

Excuses, excuses. Yeah, everything is an excuse with these shows. How about that simply not enough people cared to follow these soaps in a different form to the Internet after a year and a half delay, unlike what only Prospect Park and the most rabid die hard fans thought. Sometimes the truth hurts.

As was proven, some shows are better off being left resting in peace.

    Sal Piscioneri replied

    that’s right…….say it loud…..jimh…

    Linda replied

Do you work for ABC/D? The boycott by the extremely loyal soap fans is woking. The Chew is NOT doing as well as AMC did. That’s why ABC has it run right up to 2p without commercial break to get some of GH’s ratings. No one watched GAA or the Revolution either. We soap fans turn the channel as soon as GH is over so we don’t watch Katie! In case you haven’t noticed ABC ranks 3rd among the big 3 networks in primetime. ABC/D pissed off millions of viewers by showing such disrespect and now they are getting paid back. So instead of looking for another talk show to replace Katie ABC should put AMC & OLTL back on!

    Reply

    Lisa replied

Is that the best comeback you can come up with? Whenever someone presents an opinion that differs from yours or something you don’t want to hear, it’s always tired crap in return like “Do you work for ABC?” etc. No, I don’t, thank you.

If this so-called soap boycott is working, prove it with concrete evidence, smarty pants. This is just a small group of sour, loud fans who think that they represent millions of people but could not be more mistaken. The overwhelming majority of mainstream people in the real world have long since accepted ABC’s decision and gone on with their lives. Imagine that. Sometimes the truth hurts.

    Lew S replied

Hi Linda, I think she does. I also think she was the individual who rejoiced at the cancellation of AMC and OLTL in 2011 and insulted many of the fans on Michael’s site. If she isn’t a soap fan, why is she here? If she doesn’t like soaps, don’t watch!

    Lew S replied

Or, maybe she is Brian Frons the “genius” responsible for the cancellations of AMC and OLTL!

    Karen replied

    Amen!

    Luciano replied

Unfortunately, the truth is it took to long to bring back the two soaps. Also another down fall was the loss of some key characters (original actor’s). And perhaps as odd as it sounds the opening theme songs and sets are drastically different then before. They are very close to being two brand new shows.

Our society is suffering from obesity and the health problems that go along with it. The Chew is like cigarette manufacturers, they contribute to making society sick. This is why I do not like The Chew. I do understand the business side in the decision to cancel the soaps. I miss not having AMC on ABC but I get it. I know that Dr. oz’s daughter does do health segments but the rest are usually frying or pouring salt and sugar on everything. It will only have a young audience which is what advertisers want. As the audience ages ,they will develop health issues that will require them to eat healthy or die.

I am hope that they is one shot left for OLTL V3 ! With the proper writing team, I still believe it could succeed.

All of the money wasted on Katie and all of the jobs lost by the soaps’ cancellation is just sad. The programming decisions were so obviously misguided. Katie tanked on CBS, so why would she be successful with her own talk show? ABC should bring OLTL back since Prospect Park is so obviously in love with AMC. The former OLTL writers and producer (who are now at GH) could oversee both GH and OLTL. These writers know OLTL and could do a much better job of writing storylines that are much truer to the characters. The first act of business would be to “burn” Shelter. Any actors who do not want to return or who need to go to acting classes could “die” in the Shelter fire.

First off although Katie is produced by ABC/Disney it is a syndicated show. IN some parts of the country it airs on the NBC or CBS afffiliate.

If Katie gets cancelled that 3pm hour is not going to see AMC/OLTL or any other soap in that slot. The local affiliates were given that hour to program as they want. The ABC affiliates that do air Katie will find other programming to put int hat slot.

As for The Chew, all the numbers I have seen point to it being on par with AMC in its last season. I was determined to not like the show because it replaced the soaps. But over the last 2 yars Ive grown to like it they have some really fun and decent segments. Considering the cost to produce The CHew is just doing fine and is not going anywhere.

The only positive for soaps I see in this is it keeps General Hospital safe for now.
