15 October 19th, 2010 Boston Herald on “The Talk”… “For this, CBS cancelled ATWT?”

The reviews are in from Monday’s debut of the new mommie gabtest, The Talk. You know it best as the show that took the place of the beloved, As the World Turns. Well from coast to coast, and newspaper to newspaper the premiere episode was panned, and badly!

One of our favorite’s was from the Boston Herald who started their piece by stating, “For this, CBS canceled “As the World Turns?” And then went on to say, ” The network’s new live daytime yakfest The Talk makes ABC’s The View seem like a collaboration between NPR and MIT.  Instead of five annoying chatterboxes, CBS fields six: Big Brother robot Julie Chen, Roseanne co-star Sara Gilbert (who created the show and serves as executive producer), King of Queens co-star Leah Remini, America’s Got Talent judge Sharon Osbourne, Celebrity Apprentice runner-up Holly Robinson Peete and Hairspray’s Marissa Jaret Winokur.   Unlike  The View, there were no topical references — the show could have been filmed five years ago for all its relevance — unless you count the moment Osbourne turned a vague discussion of divorce law reform into a rant against cyberbullying.  In the most cringe-worthy segment, “Mom on the street’’ Winokur nabbed mall bystanders to ask about the appropriate age to talk to children about sex.”

Those poor ATWT fans. I watched the first day…..it was bad. So little substance. Granted, it will take a while to get their footing, but even for the first episode I expected so much more. They cancelled ATWT for this? What a load! I am sure it will stay on the air for a little while if no other reason than to avoid the backlash from angry soaps fans that they cancelled two long running soaps for such drivel. Plus, one of the hosts, Julie Chen, is married to the head of CBS. THEVIEW is much more enjoyable overall…plus they delve into real issues every now and then. THE TALK? Shut-up already!

The only reason the initial ratings were decent is because of rubber necking…you know, like folks slowing down to see an accident. Morbid curiosity and nothing more. This too, shall pass (quickly, we hope!). May it go down in flames while soap opera fans toast our marshmallows upon it.

All ATWT fans should tune into One Life To Live, Its a pretty decent show and it is very similar to ATWT. Show CBS that ABC has loyalty to its shows and its viewers!!

So true, Rob. OLTL is really getting good. I love seeing Kim Zimmer on there. Though I am familiar with her work, this is the first soap I have actuially watched that she appears in. I hope she has a big role on the show, because she seems like a great actress.

I also smile knowing that OLTL has so far beat THE TALK. I never watched ATWT but I do not think it was wise for CBS to cancel such a long running show, and one with such an AMAZING history. So, here’s hoping those ATWT and GL fans tune in to OLTL and give the soap a chance. I think soap fans will be pleasantly surprised.

ATWT was the only soap that I watched, and it’s power couple CarJack (Maura West & Michael Park) .. steamiest couple I’ve ever seen on all of the soaps .. and I’ve watched them all until ATWT!
I hope and pray that “The Talk” flops .. as it will .. and ATWT is brought back! It wouldn’t be the first soap that they were forced to bring back!
Meanwhile, Maura West (Diane) on the boring Y&R is just sizzling! She’ll light that show up!
I don’t want to see anymore of our beloved soaps die off! It will be the end of an era! In the meantime, I will watch Maura heat up Y&R .. and I may skip over to OLTL as advised to see Kim Zimmer, and I was watching OLTL about 6 months ago and was starting to get into it!
    CBS .. Bring back ATWT

Thank you the Boston Globe for the review I expected of the The Talk. I mean, come on, how many of these shows can one take??? I am a longtime viewer of ATWT’s and am still saddened to know that it is no more. I miss all the characters, the stories and actors who portrayed them. For such an amazing cast and crew of ATWT’s to be no more on the air, truly was a mistake by CBS to cancel this show. I felt robbed and to bring on a show such as The Talk, I don’t know what CBS is thinking. Talented actresses such as Maura West, Michael Park, and everyone else are truly missed. Such an amazing couple onscreen and I enjoyed each and every one of their trials and tribulations. In the end, you knew they would end up together. Things are just not the same without ATWT. Would love to see the show come back, but think there is little hope for that. I have followed Maura on Young and the Restless and she is doing a fantastic job as Diane Jenkins. Much more to come with Diane…..have to tune in to see.

As a long time ATWT viewer, I’m still missing it.I can’t seem to get into any other soap so I’ll give up for awhile.I go on you tube and watch the clips,And there are some sites that have short clips and some very long ones.i hated the way the endings were so rushed.I’ll never forgive TPTB for the rotten ending with Reid dying and Luke being left to grieve.Everybody should have had a happy ending and only Luke and Reid didn’t.Senseless and insensitive ……As for The Talk, You couldn’t pay me to watch it!Sometimes i do my laundry at that time….and i prefer laundry over anything in that time slot!Spiteful and bitter, that’s me!!!!

I really miss ATWT too, and I was really Sad when it was canceled but I decided to give the TALK a chance and it really is a “Good” show. You just need to give it a chance because you can get some really great advice and I like the variety of guests that they have on the show, and I especially like that they don’t get into these huge debates about politics like they do on the View. I also really like that they don’t have that “IDIOT” Elizabeth Hasselbeck or anyone that is like her, she is just a Sorry excuse for a human being. All you new mommies should be watching the TALK because you can learn so much and get some great advice.

What a disappointment, my goodness the new season is a bomb, get a new group of ladies that at least topped the group that has left. Your moderator Julie Chen seems to come across as snobbish. (Just my Personal opinion)

The Talk is a very stupid show just like The Chew and The Revolution. I find it hard that CBS would lower themselves by cancelling ATWT for this joke.
