With a very heavy heart On-Air On-Soaps has to report that today, ABC has now officially canceled both All My Children and One Life to Live!

ABC is confirming what has been rumored for weeks: All My Children and One Life to Live will end their storied runs in September 2011 and January 2012, respectively. They will be replaced by  talk shows, the food-themed The Chew and makeover-themed The Revolution.”

ABC Daytime head honcho, Brian Frons, released this statement, “While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can’t help but recognize how bittersweet the change is. We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways. All My Children and One Life to Live are iconic pieces of television that have made an indelible mark on our culture’s history. Each of the shows has touched millions and millions of viewers and informed the social consciousness. It has been a privilege to work with the extraordinary teams who brought the residents of Pine Valley and Llanview to life each day, and we thank the cast, crew, producers and most especially the fans for their commitment to the shows through their history.”

ABC EVOLVES THE FACE OF DAYTIME TELEVISION WITH THE LAUNCH OF TWO NEW SHOWS, “THE CHEW” AND “THE REVOLUTION”

Iconic Shows “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” Will Broadcast Their Final Episodes in September 2011 and January 2012, Respectively; Series Will Sunset in a Manner That Honors Viewers and the Shows’ Creative Legacies

Guided by extensive research into what today’s daytime viewers want and the changing viewing patterns of the audience, ABC is evolving the face of daytime television with the launch of two new shows, “The Chew,” which will premiere in September 2011, and “The Revolution” (working title), which will premiere in January 2012. These new shows expand ABC Daytime’s focus to include more programming that is informative and authentic and centers on transformation, food and lifestyle — cornerstones of programming that resonates with daytime viewers as evidenced by the success of “The View.”

As food has become the center of everyone’s life, “The Chew” will focus on food from EVERY angle — as a source of joy, health, family ritual, friendship, breaking news, dating, fitness, weight loss, travel adventures and life’s moments. Produced by Gordon Elliot, the Emmy Award-winning executive producer of “Paula Deen’s Home Cooking” and “Down Home with the Neelys,” this new one-hour series combines entertaining takeaway with memorable personalities to create a live show where viewers get the dish on anything and everything related to the world of food and beyond. Whether it’s new trends like food trucks and urban gardens or how pesticides in our food may affect our health, we can’t stop talking about it. The hosts who will guide the hour include Mario Batali (Restaurateur, Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” and author); entertaining expert Clinton Kelly (TLC’s “What Not to Wear”); Carla Hall (Bravo’s “Top Chef”); Michael Symon (Restaurateur and Food Network’s “Iron Chef America”), and nutrition expert Daphne Oz, who simplifies often confusing information about food.

From Executive Producer JD Roth and 3 Ball Productions, producers of “The Biggest Loser,” “Masterchef” and ABC’s upcoming “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition,” comes “The Revolution,” a daily show about health and lifestyle transformations. The show is hosted by a team of experts and rotating guest contributors who help viewers transform all areas of their lives, from relationships to family, food, style, home design, finance and more. This dream team, led by fashion expert Tim Gunn, also includes celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak and American Idol alum Kimberley Locke. The show features a unique concept: each week one woman’s five-month weight loss journey will unfold in just five days, with daily results and a final transformational reveal on Friday. “The Revolution” is a one-stop shop for better living.

“While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can’t help but recognize how bittersweet the change is,” said Brian Frons, President, Daytime, Disney ABC/Television Group. “We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways. A perfect example of this is ‘The View,’ and that factored into our decision. ‘The Chew’ and ‘The Revolution’ are in the same vein and will be great additions to the lineup, with ‘The View’ serving as an ideal foundation from which to launch these programs. They will also provide enormous opportunity for the creation of ancillary businesses and growth.”

“General Hospital,” the second-most popular show in daytime, is not impacted by this announcement and will remain on the air.

To honor the core, passionate audience and their rich history with our soaps, “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” will conclude each series in a manner that respects their legacies and the longstanding hopes of many of their viewers.

“‘All My Children’ and ‘One Life to Live’ are iconic pieces of television that have made an indelible mark on our culture’s history,” reflected Frons. “Each of the shows has touched millions and millions of viewers and informed the social consciousness. It has been a privilege to work with the extraordinary teams who brought the residents of Pine Valley and Llanview to life each day, and we thank the cast, crew, producers and most especially the fans for their commitment to the shows through their history.”

None of this could have been possible without the extraordinary Agnes Nixon. “More than 40 years ago, Agnes Nixon created both the worlds of ‘All My Children’ and ‘One Life to Live,’ worlds that the rest of us have been privileged to live in,” said Frons. “Her shows led the way forward, breaking a lot of rules along the way to defy expectations about what soaps can do and the issues they can cover.
I am honored to have worked with her.”

“All My Children” has revolved around the lives of the residents of fictional Pine Valley, a town which closely resembles the Philadelphia Main Line. “All My Children” took home the 1998 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, the third time the show received this top honor, having also garnered the award in 1994 and 1992. “All My Children” has received more than 30 Emmy Awards and consistently distinguishes itself in the field of daytime drama. The show has historically been committed to and is often the first to tackle social issues, focusing on such topics as AIDS, abortion, cochlear implants, teenage alcoholism, racial bias, acquaintance rape, spousal abuse, homosexuality, Reyes syndrome, Vietnam MIAs, drug abuse, the risks of motherhood over 40, safe sex, pet therapy and organ donations, among others. The show made television history airing daytime television’s first same-sex kiss between two lesbian characters, as well as daytime television’s first same sex wedding between two women. It was the first to chronicle the coming-out story of a transgender woman and to cast a real life Iraq War veteran whose story reflected his real life experiences and injuries incurred in combat.

“All My Children” premiered on the ABC Television Network on January 5, 1970, as a half-hour show; seven years later it expanded to an hour. Julie Hanan Carruthers is executive producer.

Also created by Agnes Nixon, Emmy Award-winning “One Live to Live” is set in the fictional town of Llanview, which is modeled on a Philadelphia suburb. “One Life to Live” debuted on The ABC Television Network July 15, 1968 as a half-hour show. Ten years later, it grew to a full hour in 1978.

“One Life to Live” has been lauded for its groundbreaking exploration of social issues, diverse canvas, award-winning performances and innovative storylines. Along with the history-making week of live shows in May 2002, “One Life to Live” is responsible for many “firsts” in Daytime television, including stories of interracial romance, illiteracy, medical misdiagnosis, racial prejudice, gang violence and teen pregnancy. The show received mass critical acclaim for its 1992 homophobia storyline, which captured national headlines when it introduced the character of a gay teen (played by then unknown Ryan Phillippe) and culminated with the emotional display of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. “One Life to Live” was honored by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) with the Outstanding Daytime Drama Award in 1993, and again in 2005 and 2010.

In 2002 the show won its first-ever Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, and was nominated again in 2007 and 2008. Created by Agnes Nixon, “One Life to Live” debuted on July 15, 1968 and marked its 10,000th episode on August 17, 2007. Frank Valentini executive-produces.”

Oh my God! One Life to Live is at it’s all-time best, and All My Children still has some life in it, too. We will have continued coverage throughout the day, and the days ahead on this seismic shift on the daytime canvas! Fans, please let you outrage and voice be heard here in this post!

I am very sad that Mr. Brian Frons thinks food and heath shows is what people want. No it is not. Soap fans want Love and Romance not bombs and bullets. Bad storytelling is why the ratings are failing. Mr. Frons solution after he and his ABC executives have messed the soaps up is to cancel them. Fire HIM!

Such a travesty. AMC moved from NY to LA at a great expense to both the network and the actors and crew all the time ABC/Disney deniying cancellation rumors up until the last few days. I hope all that had to make the sacrifices of uprooting themselves, selling homes and making a very expensive move will sue Disney/ABC.

I cannot say that AMC news shocked me, but OLTL has been rocking it lately and considering that they are known for staying in budget I thought it had a few more years of life.

I’m a GH watcher and gotta say that the young talent on there needs to seriously consider not renewing their contracts when up and getting out while they can. I’m afraid that GH will be lucky if it has another 5 years given that it doesn’t appear that ABC wants to update the genre or make storylines relevant….and then blame declining ratings on the fact that viewers no longer want soaps. Its a very sad day indeed.

Well, I guess there really won’t be any reason to watch the ABC network anymore except for 1 hour each day. I won’t ever invest my time in another of their primetime shows since they always cancel the ones I end up watching, so my only reason to turn on ABC will be for 1 hour of GH a day, until that gets canceled and then I’ll be free of ABC forever. If they think that soap fans are going to watch their stupid talk show and cooking show, they are wrong.

One question, Michael. Has ABC lost their minds? I don’t want another Reality, talk or game show. I use Soaps to escape my reality to focus on other people fictional realiities for a couple of hours. This is a really bad decision on ABC’s part. I am highly disappointed in ABC. I guess once there is a steep drop in daytime viewership, ABC will be forced to realize that the viewers are the ones that really matter. The Death of Daytimes Begins Today.

Susan- I agree. This is horrible. They listened to viewers that are “looking for different types of programming these days?” Really? Who are you polling? The only issue fans have with soaps these days are the writing. “They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways?” Reality shows are becoming more and more drivel every day. I love my cooking shows, but if I want to watch it, I’ll turn on Food Network. AND another show about how I should change who I am. If I wanted to lose weight, change my attire, or get a makeover, I’d turn on Bravo. You dropped the bomb on this one Frons. Will I boycott ABC. Not for one hour- because I will continue to support GH. But, know this execs, your cesspool of mail just got a LOT larger with my disdain for your actions against OLTL and AMC.

Can’t you see it? The line-up for every channel soon will be loud talk shows, make-over shows, judge shows, and other trash tv. They are going to give us a steady diet of “Charlie Sheen” type airings- the equivalent of “fast food” for tv. With quick little sound bites to make us feel compelled to look- like passing emergency vehicles. Fortunately, other than for GH, I won’t have the channel on at all- and not even because I’d be boycotting, but rather because I am just not interested, so I won’t see the sound bites. I used to watch Guiding Light, and As the World Turns. I don’t even know what they were replaced with.

It really saddens me to think of a future with no love in the afternoons. I may be in the minority but I am over the reality TV deluge. Reality isn’t always entertaining. So what will these shows do? They will create drama, maybe do some scripted scenes. Because people want the drama but people also want the escape. In my 20 years of soap viewing I have enjoyed almost every twist and turn ABC Daytime has given me. I have taped, TiVo’d, and watched late night on SoapNet when necessary. It has been an absolutel privilage to watch these shows and I am deeply saddened to think of a TiVo without them. And upon hearing reports that the media was notified before the casts, all I can say is, Shame on You, Brian Frons. Not only have you had Susan Lucci and all AMC powers tht be “reassuring” AMC was safe, which we now know as a HUGE lie, you didn’t even have enough respect for your employees to inform them properly. And OLTL is at it’s finest right, now. But my final question would be, why is GH safe? It’s no shinning star in the ratings.

I started watching when I was 12 and the main reason I kept watching was because of the talent that is Erika Slezak. My heart aches so much for the veteran actors like Erika because she has given 40 years to OLTL and for what? It’s going to be over in just a few months, it is so sickening to me. OLTL has been doing so well out of the three soaps as of late and it is a shame. I honestly hope that the same won’t happen to GH. It has been a bit rough as of late and it would be such a shame to lose GH too. I wish OLTL and AMC cast and crew the best of luck in the future. And I for one will not be tuning into the replacements of AMC and OLTL.

Well, except to say that I will NEVER watch anything ABC decides to air in the place of a soap opera. Luckily, I think that the soap opera creators and executives are smart enough to see that millions of fans now have a void that needs to be filled and will do something so that the genre will survive (maybe just not in the exact same form). I think that the writing on OLTL is currently the best of the ABC soaps (and I was a diehard GH fan for decades), so this really a crappy move. One of the many things I have always appreciated about soaps was the commitment to creativity on a daily basis. Producing an original product day after day is not an easy task. And I appreciated the effort. I work, but I still made time for these characters on a regular basis. It’s nice to escape to the familiarity and comfort of these characters and their storylines. I’m very disappointed that ABC has given up the rich lives of these characters, to bring us more “reality” based programming (like TV isn’t over-saturated with enough of that already).

What a sad day in history. Growing up in a home where my Mother worked from home, ABC soaps were always on in the background. When I was in school, I “kept up” with them through my Mom. As an adult, I watch episodes online – maybe not every day, but I keep up as best I can. I can’t imagine a time when these two lovely soaps, that I have watched since I was a little girl, won’t be accessible. My heart is broken – not just for myself and all the thousands upon thousands of other fans, but for the lovely and deeply talented actors and actresses who work tirelessly to entertain us every day. You are amazing human beings who will be blessed in your further endeavors. I wish each and every one of you love, success and happiness! Bless you all. XO

In my first “experiment” w/ soaps, I watched AMC for a couple of years in the early 80s. I came back for GL and Otalia…then boom, cancellation. I watch DooL for Crystal Chappell, and then tried OLTL for Jessica Leccia. While neither of those shows is Guiding Light, it’s still a damn shame to lose AMC and OLTL. A damn shame.

I deeply saddened by this news . Unfortunately, I am afraid all soaps are in jeopardy. I have watched DOOL for over 40 yrs and had watched OLTL and AMC off and on as well.

I feel badly for all these amazing actors who will be affected by this decision. Soap actors, in general, are some of the best actors out today. I pray this is the last cancellation we soap fans will have to experience.

Oh God this is such distressing and depressing news…I haven’t watched AMC in years AND just started to watch OLTL again when it was rumored and now confirmed that Roger Howarth was coming back to the show -what just to say Adios to all the loyal viewers….I just want to cry.
I was a daytime ‘junkie’ through my mid-teens to my thirties ….watched ALL the ABC daytime dramas.
I was there for the demise of the BELOVED Ryan’s Hope and Loving/The City.
But like many working moms I got very busy over the years and Daytime just fell by the wayside….it was something I MIGHT watch on a day off or if I was home sick.
Now the kids are grown and I’m still a working mom -but I have more me time to devote to the things I like.
Re-investing time in OLTL was one of those things.
I have NO interest in the ‘described NEW shows’.
I don’t watch ‘REALITY’ TV…I like CNN News and AC 360 even tho I’m Canadian.
OLTL and Y&R for that matter are my escapist pleasures from the daily grind.
Thank God I’ll at least get to watch OLTL til it’s demise in January….then I may go into therapy, carry on the love affair via YouTube or start a Blog.
But right now I just want to cry me a river….pass the box of tissues PLEASE !!

This is sad news. However, is anyone really surprised by this? For me, the real blow was the cancellation of ATWT, a show that needed some improvement in the writing but, unlike the others, had a significant number of veteran characters played by the same actors. ATWT had a lot of life left in it when it was cancelled. Once the decision was made to cancel this still viable show, it is no shock that others would quickly go down the same path.

The likely future of these shows is pretty obvious: In 5 years, we will be lucky if BOTH GH and Y&R are still on the air with DAYS and B&B dead. Clearly, soap operas are expensive and do not make a lot of financial sense with their dwindling ratings. The only thing that I can imagine would save them would be a creative executive who found a way to keep the cost down and a more welcoming broadcaster for a show and (more unlikely) writers who could create compelling, original storylines based on the characters and the history.

It really is NOT the fault of the networks that these shows are dying. The writing for everyone of them has been unoriginal and uninspiring for several years. (The shows themselves appear to have ignored this. How many times have I read about some writer or producer who has failed on one show quickly being hired for another one?) The ratings have plunged and the profit-driven networks are doing what any sound business would do — cutting a costly and money losing operation.

I have always liked daytime serials and am saddened by this news. However, it is not unexpected.

I have watched oltl since 1985. I am so angry. It is a quality show. Roger Howarts return calmed my fears…..but what a shock. Now I know how all of the CBS fans felt.

I am one of those CBS fans that was devastated when GL and ATWT were cancelled. My family invested MANY years in those soaps (third generation) and after they were gone I started watching OLTL and now it will be gone. I REFUSE to invest ANY time in another soap. So NO GH for me and I’ve watched Y&R for years and DOOL off and on for years, but their story lines don’t change much. So GOOD BYE ABC, CBS and NBC during the day, I will watch other shows from the satellite during the day. To the execs at those networks……….. :-p

When I first heard the news via a tweet from Nelson Branco (@SudsReport) – while I was watching “One Life to Live” nonetheless, I felt like my stomach had just plummeted. I could scarcely believe it, but as the news spread and I read the official press release I knew. And then I recalled almost the exact same feeling when I learned “Guiding Light” had been cancelled two years ago.

I don’t watch the kind of talk-show/reality crap of the type Frons is looking to replace both shows with. There are way too many of them. In fact, about the only ‘reality’ shows I watch are on A&E (like ‘The First 48″, “Beyond Scared Straight”, “Intervention”, “Manhunters: Fugitive Task Force”, “Heavy”). The ONLY primetime ABC shows I do watch are “Grey’s Anatomy”, “The Map” and “Body of Proof”. However, since I’m living in Canada – our ratings for those don’t count, and most the time I download them since I work nights and usually asleep in the evenings when the shows are on.

I can’t believe ABC would take off these shows to replace them with 2 shows that sound like they will tank from the get go. I have no interest in watching the Chew or Revolution. They sound hideous! I already have food network, travel channel and such with food programs I certainly don’t think anyone will be thrilled to see a food program during the time our beloved soaps used to be. Then the thought of a dating show coming on, I can’t even process all this. I will definitely not watch after OLTL is off the air. I don’t know anyone who is going to be excited for the two replacement shows. Big mistake on ABC’s behalf. I would however watch OLTL on any other network, at any different time. I’m also disappointed in Gordon Ramsey, is he really so desperate for airtime that he would shoot down his own career? I hop ehis business partners talk some sense to him and this horrible choice that is going to make his name MUDD! There are a lot of commercial wachers that love their daytime ‘stories’ and are going to be severely vocal about this career challenging decison.
Also, how many American jobs are on the line?

It is a big mistake. I do watch One Life to Live also, but All My Children is my favorite. I am very sad to see this happening to day time TV. Once again there are enough food and realty shows on.

I have watched AMC and OLTL off and on for years. Even though the story line for AMC lacks alot, it does not need to be cancelled, just revive it with better writing and story lines. OLTL has really been good lately. I enjoy watching the “old people” with their story lines. Hey, I can relate. And there is plenty of good looking young men for all the girls, young and old, to drool over. The only complaint I have with that show is the lack of talent for a couple of the young actors. I have never watched “The View”, and I am not interested in watching a cooking show. I don’t care for reality tv, or talk shows. I like a show with a story line. The shows that are being proposed probably cost much less than the soaps. I hope that if the shows actually are cancelled that some other network picks them up. We need drama!!!

I am shocked that ABC has cancelled both All My Children and One Life To Live, shows which I have watched for many years and enjoyed, through their ups and their downs. ABC is only thinking of their bottom line because their so-called “research” is baloney! Their research should have consisted of actually asking us viewers what we want to watch….and it sure aint more talk shows and if I want to watch a cooking show, I turn to Food Network. They should have done an on-line poll and asked all viewers to send emails, texts, letters, etc., what WE wanted, would have cost them nothing and they would have gotten the truth, which apparently they did not want. It is a tough world we live in and one of the few things we could count on to lose ourselves in for an hour or two are our soaps and without even asking us, they take them away! I will not only NOT watch the replacement shows they put on, but guess what ABC…I will never watch ANY show you have on during the day or night after the last days of my soaps! I am sure I am not alone in this so how is that going to affect your so-called ratings and how happy will the advertisers be when noone is seeing their commercials? Stupid move ABC! Don’t TELL us what we as viewers want to see, ASK us if you really want to know….and what we want is our soaps! One person like myself might not make a difference, but MILLIONS of outraged soap fans that will never watch ABC again WILL! Put that in your research!

Like we really need another talk show or even a cooking show. I watch All My Chrildren, One Life to Live and General Hospital every night on soap net. I really enjoy the story lines. I never watch talk shows they all cover the same junk and as far as I am concerned we are to obsessed with food as it is. Please reconsider your decision. We need verity. Since most women are in the work place during the day time maybe if you also showed them in the evening you might get more viewers. The latin community show their soaps in the evening and trust me they have a lot of viewers. Women like the distraction.

All My Children has been watched by 4 generations of women in my family. My 17 year old daughter has grown up watching it. In fact Erita was one of her first words (ha ha). I will NEVER watch ABC again. They are taking away a part of my family, a part of every day life. Shame on you ABC.

I can not believe this I have been watching AMC since it first aired and OLTL . I tape them everyday so I do not have to watch all the commercials. My son asked me what will I watch now. I agree with everyone. I won’t watch ABC after this. I think there are more people that watch both these shows then your stupid polls. I do not watch cooking shows or talk shows. If I want a recipe I look it up online. Everyone I know has been watching both these shows since they first came on T.V. General hospital is another good one. ABC you better think twice about what your doing or you won’t have any viewers left. You really need to reconsider. ABC your making a huge mistake. Keep All My Children & One Life to Live on the air!!!!

I’m heartbroken!! OLTL is the only show I ever watch, I dvr it and watch with my daughters 15 and 20. They’ve grown up with this show, I rocked them to sleep when they were babies while I watched it….I absolutly hate reruns and that’s what is sooo wonderful about OLTL and other soaps…continuous story line!!!! I really wish OWN would buy these shows and keep them running…LISTEN UP Oprah….your station ratings will skyrocket!!! Enough talk shows and food shows….seriously!!! ABC bad move on your part!!!!

Seriously, what a shame. Soapnet’s going away too in 2012. These shows take us away from our own “reality” for an hour or so each day. How many more food shows can we stomach. If it is modeled after “The View”, I can guarantee you I will never watch. If I want to watch those types of shows, I’ll watch Food TV. For what it’s worth, I vote to keep them going.

Just deleted ABC app from my iPad. Only used it to watch AMC, just about the only thing I watch on network TV. As far as ABC’s replacements for AMC & OLTL? I have no use for any more cooking or trash talk shows. If I want a cooking show, I watch FoodNetwork. As far as shows like The View? Please! I have better things to do with my time. Now, I will have a good reason to shut the thing off for at least 2 hours a day.

When I heard that the two shows were going off the air, I went in to a depression. They have been part of my entire life and I will truely miss them. Even back when I was a kid, I would jump off the bus and turn on the TV to see what Erica was into now! There are enough food and talk shows and I, for one, will not be watching them. I do like The View and Dr. Oz but enough is enough. I don’t know to many people who just sit down and watch television all day. I have it on but kept on working, do whatever housework that needed to be done but my soap friends were always there with me. I am very dissappointed with ABC and think they are making a very poor decision. Give it another think ABC!!!!!!!! You’re doing the wrong thing.

I need escapism after a long day in the real world. I’ll be too busy cooking to tape or watch your new shows ABC. I predict both new snafoose to be history before 18 months have passed. Sad decision.

I think getting rid of All My Children and One Life to Live is a big mistake. I have been watching All My Children for 40 years. I couldn’t wait to watch it in the afternoon. And if I wasnt home I would tape it. I think the person who did this should be very ashamed of themselves. Those actors moved from New York to LA to keep their jobs and make their fans happy. Then after the move they cancel the show , What about the wonderful actors loose their jobs. I just recently started watchin One Life to Live. I’m just mad at myself for not watching it sooner. There are wonderful actors and actress on that show. Thank God for soap net I just tape One Life to Live at 3 am and watch it when I have time to watch it. I never wish anything bad on anyone but for the person that cancelled these shows. If you loose your job then you will know how some wonderful actors felt when you let let them go. On January 15th when One Life to Live is cancelled I am done watching the ABC channel.
