Canada is mourning our soaps too!  In a piece for CBC News the state of the soap genre is profiled featuring footage from Tuesday’s soap opera fan protest in front of the ABC Upfronts, a group of long-time soap watchers, and interviews with All My Children’s, Cameron Mathison (who hails from Canada), and TV Guide Canada’s soap journalist, Nelson Branco.

The segment looks at the ever-changing and dwindling canvas of the daytime genre, and what it means to many people, plus how budgets have been integral to wiping soaps off the map! Watch the segment after the jump!

Y&R has been a staple in my family. It started with my Grandmother who started watching from the very first episode and NEVER MISSED ONE up until less than a week before she passed away 2 years ago. She was 92. The love of Y&R and soaps in general is something my family has always joked about saying, “it ran through our veins like blood.” I am a Canadian fan. At 30 years old, I feel like I have grown up with many of the Characters. The thought that this genre is dying is crushing to me. While I have not personally watched the shows that were just cancelled, I cannot take this sitting down. My soap could be the next to go. This is a travesty that needs to be avoided at all costs!

  2. Brooke says:

From what I hear, Couric is eyeing Oprah’s syndicated spot with affiiiates, not GH’s.

From what I have seen, promos for “The Spew” and “The Regurgitation” look just awful. They won’t last.

Thanks for using the vid link, Michael. :)

We can only hope that GH’s status will hold for the time being. Fingers crossed. If only one could be picked up, I really want OLTL to be the one. It’s on FIRE.

I am in the 18-49 age demographic…I have watched ABC soaps for my entire life! My mother watches, my grandmother watches, my friends watch. I have been waiting for the day my daughter is old enough to fall in love with them! This is a horrible mistake by ABC and we, the viewers, are not being counted accurately with the Neilsen ratings!

I actually have childhood memories watching that show when ABC simsubbed CBC until I was 4, not 5 but close. WXYZ simsubbed that show, even on star choice too. WCVB used to simsubbed to the CBC feeds in Atlantic Canada for two straight years for all my children. In 1998, Citytv picked up the show to avoid family rivals competing with CityTVs One life to live and CBCs all my children. I watch that instead of Barney the boring dinosaur on PBS. Until 1996, one life to live aired on CBC. In 1998, both ABC’s daytime shows starting airing on ASN in atlantic Canada due to CBC airing European soap operas. CBC only simsubs christmas programs from american networks via pay television. in 1999, I restarted watching soap operas only for NBC and CBSs shows when later my mom took over that which I used to watch it with her. when General Hospital is over, Who Wants to be A Millionaire will return to abc, this time and longer as a daytime show, also with the fastest finger. Soap Operas will ban daytime shows due to bankruptcy or end up on CW and fox. I am more of a action and comedy show guy still and now,I really miss being a teenager. CTV used to air that show until 1982.
