CBS Daytime Vice President Barbara Bloom released a statement today on CBS’s part in the decision to cancel the enduring As the World Turns. The soap will have spanned 54 years and more than 13,000 episodes by the time it stops orbiting this earth next September 2010.

Here is the statement from Bloom: “It’s extremely difficult to say good-bye to a long-running series that’s been close to our hearts for so long…”

“The almanacs will show As the World Turns as a pioneer of the format, a hallmark for quality with its numerous Emmy’s, the launching pad for many television and film stars and a daytime ratings powerhouse for parts of three decades. ”

But, the true legacy of  As the World Turns will be the fictional characters and stories of a small Midwest town that resonated every day with millions of viewers over multiple generations, becoming a treasured daytime institution in the process.  We thank our partners at Procter & Gamble for the privilege of hosting this beloved series…the actors, writers, producers and crew who worked so hard and shared their amazing talents to bring this series to life…and, of course, the viewers who shared the journey on our network for so many years.

I am shocked that ATWT is joining the trend of finality next year. What has happened and will happen to all the loyal fans. That show was one of the first ones that that I watched way back when. What a shame! Soaps are a big part of radio and television culture. Obviously, there will be a reincarnation of some sort and some other venue. Maybe it will be like ‘Venice’ and be online. All those actors can not be absorbed into the soaps that will be left standing….Terrible news…

I cannot believe CBS is doing it again. Don,t the fans deserve to have their shows continue. I have been watching ATWT for over 30 years and it,s like taking away part of myself. If it weren,t for fans cbs wouldn,t have watchers for their shows. Please find another way to save our soap. Thank You.

I am so shocked to find out that you are taking this show off of the air. It was bad enough to see Guiding Light leave but now ATWT ?! I’ve watched this show for years and I hate this. Please don’t do this to all of the loyal fans.

I cannot believe that you are cancelling ATWT. I have watched that show since I was ten years old and I am 62. Jeff and Penny were my first favorites on that show. Thousand of fans will be very upset. Why would you want to do away with such a good show? You cancelled GL and that was a real shame, too. What’s next Y&R or B&B? You just keep taking away our shows! You really don’t care about the viewers, do you? Just throw the shows out and to hell with the viewers! There are many loyal fans out here and we demand that you respect what we want! And we want our soaps to go on for years to come! You bring new, young people in and they want to change television viewing and they don’t care about what we want to see. Oprah is awful and so are the “medical” shows that are on and so are the “gossip” shows that are on. We don’t care about those shows. We want the shows that we have watched for years and years and want to keep watching them. You took GL away from us even though hundreds of people begged you not to. Now its ATWT and you don’t even care. Shame on you for now caring. And yes I know it is the almighty dollar, but what about the loyal viewers? We won’t watch the trash the you replace these shows with. “Let’s Make a Deal” is so very stupid. Is that where you think our mentality is? I don’t watch any CBS shows at night and now you are forcing me to give up daytime, too, by taking the shows I love away. I hope CBS goes broke and goes down the drain!
    Thank you, Linda Price
