32 February 16th, 2013 CBS Daytime’s Angelica McDaniel On Marcy Rylan’s Exit And Happy Return To Y&R!

CBS Daytime is growing by leaps and bounds these days thanks in large part to the efforts of CBS Daytime’s Senior Vice-President, Angelica McDaniel!  The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful scored impressive numbers for the February Sweeps ratings period with Y&R being up 15% in the key female 18-49 demo, and up in all other demos as well!   B&B was also up in the key 18-49 female demo by 17%!   While McDaniel is having success managing the CBS Daytime line-up, she was also featured in this week’s issue of Soap Opera Digest on newsstands now in a fascinating interview!

One of the more revealing parts of the feature was when the subject of Y&R fan favorite Marcy Rylan (Abby) being let-go from the number one soap, and then surprisingly brought back!  McDaniel filled SOD in by relating how it all shook out!

Angelica:  “Jack’s family was getting smaller.  That was a real concern, and at the moment, we had Marcy’s contract up, but we didn’t have story for her in the next few months, so to keep her under contract when we weren’t really going to use her would’ve cost the show.  So we had to make a decision to exit Abby …  but there was always the knowledge that we’d bring Abby back and we would have to figure out what her story was as soon as we figured out other stories first.  Once we were ready to bring back that character, we wanted to get Marcy right back because she brought a great energy to that role.”

So soapers are you happy to see Marcy Rylan back on Y&R? What do you think about CBS Daytime under Angelica McDaniel’s tenure?  Let us know!

I liked Abby in the past but when she started with the hate towards Sharon it got way out of hand. I could not wait for Abby to leave. I hope Abby is now written with a little more maturity!!!

A Y&R fan for umpteen years and now I watch it out of habit, but honestly I do nod out watching it at times’ yawn ..
(how it is #1 is beyond me, I think the ratings are rigged LOL :) (it’s just not that good)
I hope Abby will bring some excitement.

We are day ahead here in Canada- without giving too much away on Monday’s show- it looks like Abby will not be with her bartender after all- he dumps her. She ends up at Nick’s club and she spends the night flirting with Alex- so I don’t know if that sounds exciting to you, but I can tell you she was the first person I seen with Alex that makes him seem interesting- she is like a breathe of fresh air in GC- I am glad she is back too.

NBC should learn from past mistakes if it wants DOOL to succeed. Years ago it placed the show against the mege popular ATWT, and ratings fell. Seeing how being opposite CBS’S two most popular soaps keeps Days usually in last place, youd think theyd move it to 3pm where there would be no competion from other serials. This would be the first time since i can remember that none of the soaps were opposite. Many Days fans could watch the CBS soaps causing more ratings to rise and CBS soap fans could watch DOOL allowing more ratings growth for them. A win win for all including us soap fans who would like to support all the soaps that our still on the networks

Where do you leave? In my area & with most people I know Days is on opposite of GH, not B&B or Y&R. Though I do understand possibly moving it so it doesn’t have competition with GH, moving it later in the day could cost it the ratings it has from it’s regular viewers. For a while when OLTL first went off, nothing was opposite of Days & the ratings really didn’t increase all that much because no one else was tuning in. I do want them to succeed, I’ve watched Days my whole life but I think they need alot more than a time slot change to increase that.

In my area DOOL is oppsite YAR and BATB, and its been that way for years. Days competes with the last half of YAR and Days last half is opposite BATB. Its never been opposite GH where i live. It must be programed at different hours in certain parts of the country. Days needs to tell more stories instead of just having characters bedhopping with someone different each week. Maybe Hope could struggle with a drinking problem if Bo was killed off, Nancy returns, has a cancer scare, but there was a mixup at the hospital and its Marlena who has cancer bringing her and John closer together, a shady talent agent who tricks Chloe out of her money with a promise of a record deal and Daniel helps her pay her debts which causes more friction in his relationship with Jen, an accident brings Will and Sonny back together, i could go on with a lot more ideas that could tie most of the characters together, get Kayla, Abe, and Roman back into the picture and expand on Camerons background. There is some stories goin on in Salem, and im enjoying them but there could be a lot more goin on and more character involvement like what they are doing at GH. Heck Days could even be the no. 1 show no matter whats opposite. I grew up watching days, and id feel lost without. More should be done to bring the ratings up.

I am ecstatic that they fixed the mistake in letting the very talented, Marcy Rylan go.

They were wise to bring her back because her star is rising. She has shot an episode of CSI.

I’m glad she’s back also! But is she on contract or reccuring? Either way it’s good that she’s back but she should be on contract.

And I agree that Marco Dapper should come back, yummy!

Contract doesn’t guarantee story line, look at KL who plays Esther she is contract and she is rarely on screen, while TB who plays Lauren is recurring and she is on a lot. I think all a contract does is guarantees the actor is paid whether they are on screen on not, while recurring means they get paid for per episode they are in- right now MR is recurring but that doesn’t mean we won’t see her on screen- it depends on the storyline they have plan for her.

Angelica, that is no excuse. It would have not been that hard to make a storyline up for Abby. If Ron Carlivati was writing, he would have wrote for her and have her interact with other characters.

LOL. RC cannot write for crap. Abby had NO STORYLINE going once Ashley left the show, and she needed to exit. And truthfully, she really did not need to come back into the canvas.

I kinda agree Scott…I didn’t think they needed to bring her back. But if they start writing her as an ADULT, and not some stupid heiress riding horseback, naked, through a hotel, I’m willing to give her a chance. Going to work at Jabot is a good start :)

I’ve loved Marcy since her “Guiding Light” days. I think she’s terrific and I am so happy that TPTB at “Y&R” have realized what a talent she is and brought her back.

I loved Marcy as Lizzie on GL. And when she came onto Y&R as Abby I was annoyed. Truthfully, I could do without Abby Newman on the show. She doesn’t add anything.

As for Carmine, the actor cannot act well and isn’t all he’s cracked up to be.

I don’t know. It is good news about Marcy Ryland returning. However, I’m possibly troubled by how much it appears that CBS is involved in the details such as casting for Y&R. The show worked extremely well when Bill Bell seemed to run everything. I know that Lynn Marie Latham, Maria Arena Bell, and this crew are no where near producing the quality show that he did but that doesn’t mean I’d welcome the network being involved in the day-to–day operations of Y&R as this article suggests.

Maybe it is just me. I’m firmly convinced CBS’s meddling into As The World Turns (along with the sheer incompetence of producer Chris Goutman and alleged writer Jean Passanante) killed that show.

As with all boneheaded casting decisions, this just sounds like more back pedalling to try and appease fans. They had no story for Abby? Lets see…a legacy character with ties to the two core families…an appealing performer who is popular…a hunky new leading man…a character who stirs the pot and drives action…and no story? They could find story for the isolated, useless character of Eden, but not Abby? This is another example of the powers that be NOT giving the fans what they want until they have enraged them. Regardless, I am glad Abby is back. Now give her a worthy storyline and a viable love interest.

While I am glad when “Y & R” is acknowledged with any award, I really don’t think the show should have won for that hot mess of a storyline. Another “would have, could have been good” storyline as ruined by MAB and her ineptitude and plagiarism.

CBS is a well-oiled machine and it seems daytime is strong for the Eye network. CBS in recent years is doing a lot to promote its daytime lineup, I just feel more could have been done regarding GL and ATWT through the 2000s. Can’t help but wonder if there could have been some efforts made then to shore up the daypart. I believe Y&R will continue to improve. I like many B&B actors, but not the stories so much.

CBS is not NBC which seems to be a peacock with its head cut off, or ABC which decimated its classic and cherished brand. I’d guess it will be CBS who will revive the genre by taking a chance on a new half hour soap one day.

I am so sick and tired of hearing the “praise” coming from these networks (CBS and ABC) about how happy they are that their daytime soaps (what is left of them) are thriving. They do not care. If they did, they would not let their affiliates interrupt them for funerals (that are a private matter), house fires, and police chases … to name a few.

To top it off, my lovely affiliates, CBS2 and ABC7 (Los Angeles) do not even feel the need to air these shows that were preempted during the early morning hours. I will have you know that ABC7 felt that Dr. Oz, The Chew, and Katie were much more important than General Hospital which is nearing its 50th anniversary. The same can be said for CBS2, who did not even bother to try and fit in The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.

I have come to the sad, cold reality that the networks are talking out of both sides of their mouths. They do not care about their viewers. The affiliates here in Los Angeles certainly only care about getting their own faces on television. The truth is that ALL of our soaps are going to go away and, if we are lucky, I guess the only thing we will have left is something like Prospect Park to put them ONLINE.

When that happens I will be done with soaps because I can’t take one more stupid cell phone commercials. I will just enjoy stations that play old shows with infomercial like commercials instead because streaming is too fickle and the networks have proven once again that they do not want me.

After reading this article I now understand that changes have been made to create a difference in Y&R. You are loosing viewers. I’ve been a diehard fan from day # 1. Haven’t missed much of Y&R since the day it started until now. Something is missing. I don’t know what yall are doing different but you are not hitting on the mark. You are not holding peeps interest as you once did. In the last month or so, I haven’t been able to sit and watch a complete episode. Please fix this where I can get back to being a diehard fan.
