83 February 18th, 2013 DAYS James Scott On Why He Did Not Submit Himself For Lead Actor In Daytime Emmy Competition!

Courtesy/NBC

Everyone has been asking, just where was Days of our Lives James Scott’s  (EJ DiMera) name on the ballot for the list of lead actor’s who are in the running to try and nab a Pre-Nomination in this year’s 40th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards contest?  Well the answer to that came officially today in the latest issue of Soap Opera Uncensored!

James, who many felt was a shoo-in for a nomination for his work, decided not to submit himself and a clip of his work in the initial round revealing, “I looked for a couple of weeks and couldn’t find anything I really felt confident about. I had a lot of pretty good shows, but nothing that I felt would really place me in contention so I thought it best to duck out this year. And, honestly, I am a little disenfranchised with the whole process. Last year I submitted 3 minutes of what I thought was the best material I have done in a long time and it didn’t even make it past the first round.”

So soapers what do you think about James’ sentiments? Do you understand why James says he felt a bit “disenfranchised” with the Emmy process after last year’s knockout in the first round?  What scene would you have like to seen James submit to earn him a slot on the Pre-Nomination ballot?   Weigh-in!

There is no explaining Emmy voting or the entire process. If I could explain it, Van Hansis would have three Emmys. James Scott did have what I thought was exquisite work last year, and there is no explaining why it wasn’t recognized. This year, I think he should have submitted the scenes leading up to Lexie’s death when it was just the two of them in her office talking. He and Renee were just flawless.

100% agree. The DEA is a complete joke. And yes, VH as LS on ATWT should hae won at least 1 EA if not all three for which he was nominated. VH may have realized that the DEA was a joke, he did not enter for his outstanding performance in the last year of ATWT.

Okay….can we tone down the Van worship???? Best performance in 60 years of soaps??? Seriously?? Have you watched soaps for all 60 of those? Besides the plethora of older actors who have turned in Emmy winning and worthy performances, the soaps are chock full of younger performers who have shone. Van played a sullen gay boy adequately, but was far from the most outstanding actor to grace soaps, and to claim that is a serious injustice to the hundreds and thousands of actors who have graced soaps with their talents over the years.

    EDDIE EMMONS replied

Lol….says Ashlee.I’ve watched daytime since 1970……so let’s see,43 years.Obviously you have issues with “sullen gay boys.”

    Sarah White Sees replied

Wow, Ashley, “sullen gay boy.” What a prejudicial term. Sounds as though someone has been watching a little too much of “Nick” on “Days of our Lives.” I’ve watched daytime for at least 58 years (didn’t have a TV before that). For you to say that Van portrayed Luke “adequately” makes me even wonder if you watched the same actor I did. Van is in a class by himself and shows remarkable range.

    Sarah White Sees replied

Oops, I mistakenly typed Ashley instead of Ashlee. I’ve had Eileen Davidson on my brain today.

Jane I think that is one of the funniest comments I have ever heard submit every year like they are filing taxes. If Tony Geary had been up there again I would have thrown up no way has he deserved it seven times. I can think of at least two times once Grant Alexander from GL should have taken it home and the other Peter Reckell when they were up against TG. Michael Logan from TV Guide has often stated that when an actor gets that many they should quit submitting themselves .

Honestly when it comes down to it acting isn’t every thing when the Emmy winner is chosen. It just comes down to good dialogue. Don’t get me wrong James Scott can act his little British pants off. But Days of our Lives writing is terrible the worst of all the Soaps. I think if JS was on a soap like Y&R per se, that Emmy would have been his a long time ago. Y&R and I guess BB and some times GH have wonderful script writers and there dialogue is wonderful for daytime. Honestly I never really saw James Scott sticking around soaps for the long haul he’s to talented for it and the day he leaves Days I can honestly see him being integrated into primetime shows and feature films and be believable.

It’s so true. I’m always scratching my head everytime the nominees are announced. So many brilliant actors, such as James Scott, go unnoticed for more “louder” and “popular” overrated actors. I’ve stopped tuning in or paying attention to the Emmy’s ever since Y&R’s Sharon Case was snubbed 8 years ago for her Cassie SL. But I thought last year was definitely Alison Sweeney and James Scotts’ best year to win with the amazing Johnny SL but once again, the Emmy’s disappoint. Trust me, this competition isn’t about rewarding great work. It’s about knowing how to play the politics and kiss the most ass.

James Scott being overlooked on being nominated for a Emmy is really a disgrace. James is one of two reasons(Ali Sweeney being the other) that I watch Days. I have been watching Days for over 20 years and they are the only reason I watch now. I am so thrilled to see them finally as a couple. Even on a bad day James’s communication with the audience is like no other. You can tell he gives it his all. I think the scene with Lexie telling each other goodbye in a way was one of the best scenes. He showed such emotion . I still cry every time I watch this scene. James is a winner in my book anytime.

James submitted a scene last year similar to his submission in 2009 I believe. He had much better material in 2009 and 2011 he should have submitted. In 2012 he had few dramatic, Emmy worthy scenes and that trend is continuing into 2013. He needs to submit scenes with actors equal to or above his acting ability – Arianne Zucker, Joe Mascolo, Lauren Koslow are the most obvious. In soaps and acting in general an actor needs a worthy partner to play off of and force him to up his game. James was part of the discussion about changes to Emmy voting so he should be aware of what is expected. All my opinion of course, which I am entitled to despite what a certain fanbase will say.

No one knows why he didn’t get a nom last year; that’s one of life’s great mysteries. He had amazing stuf this year and last year was no different. He made my heart break for EJ when he pled with Stefano over the letter claiming he wasn’t his son, talking to Steffie in his coffin and learning Lexie was going to die. I think he had a great shot at it this year. At the end of the day, it’s his material so he gets the final say.

I don’t blame him, knowing a little bit about the Daytime Emmy voting process. I think it’s strange to have to vote based on one scene as opposed to the body of work for the year but that’s just me.

In any case Mr. Scott had stunning scenes this year with the Lexie brain tumor storyline and being disowned by Stefano. There’s one moment in particular that stayed with me, when confronted with Stefano’s indifference, EJ replies “but I love you.”

Honestly, there are so many great actors that never won awards that they obviously deserved he needn’t worry. Just focus on the work and everything else is gravy

I thought James had Emmy worthy scenes when EJ and Lexie confronted her impending death together, and when Stefano basically disowned EJ. However, I respect James as both an individual and as an actor, and although I am disappointed that he will not have the opportunity to be honored by his industry this year, I accept his decision. I can certainly understand why he would not want to submit material which he didn’t feel was up to his personal standards. I will continue to view him as one of the most talented actors in soaps. He is hands down my favorite in over 45 years of watching soaps.

He is an extremely popular actor without all the advertising.

I love James, he’s a fantastic actor. I really disagree with the Ejami grief sex being the best material he’s done in years. His best material has been across Joe and Ari. The scene where Ej was going to shoot himself in the head should have won James an Emmy. Last year he should have submitted something other then the grief sex. Those were decent scenes but not Emmy worthy. He gave his most powerful performances with Joe.

Although I think that James put forth some excellent work this past year, particularly in his scenes with Joe Mascolo around EJ’s paternity and with Renee Jones over Lexie’s illness, I understand why he didn’t feel inspired to submit anything this year. The scenes he submitted for last year’s Emmys were stellar – some of the best work he’d done on Days, but he failed to get on the pre-nom ballot. I was quite stunned at the time and I can see how that would be discouraging. That doesn’t lessen the value of James’ contribution to Days or his outstanding acting abilities. It also sounds like James, as many people are, is likely his own worst critic. I look forward to seeing the work that he puts forth during the coming year and hope to see him submit next year.

disenfranchised? tell that to all the racial minority actors and actresses who never even get roles. you’d think that soap operas from daytime and primetime would push for more racial diversity considering how low their ratings have sunk and that there are very few of them left. there’s a lot of campaigning w/ acting awards though w/c shows that acting awards are not prestigious. acting awards don’t validate an actor’s “talent” bec it’s all subjective when it comes to acting talent. and these awards don’t exactly do anything for an actor’s career per se. even academy awards don’t necessarily help an actor get more roles. academy awards are considered the most “prestigious” and yet everyone knows that those awards are a joke bec actors launch campaign blitzes to win. and then they faux cry on stage when everyone knows how thirsty they are for awards. there are racialized components to actor’s winning awards bec of their specific roles. octavia spencer won for portraying a maid. the movie “the help” was considered prestigious bec it’s a “white savior” movie where the white chars combat the racism that black people experience. these kind of movies abt race have hollywood patting themselves on the back. those are the factors w/c influence awards. acting is not a meritocracy. there’s no scientific way to quantify an actors talent. this is an explanation for the lack of racial diversity among actors. everything’s subjective for acting and therefore casting directors and showrunners can keep giving roles to white actors while limiting the presence of racial minorities bec of a system of “talent evaluation” w/c is completely subjective. it’s pretty much accepted that meryl streep’s the best actress. she thinks katherine hepburn’s the best actress. hepburn has described meryl’s acting as robotic and mechanical. no one’s wrong. no one’s right. it’s all subjective. opinions are subjective and can be influenced by the type of role and kind of movie. people can be swayed to vote for someone bec of their campaining and bec of the personalities of the actors. a lot of actors campaign for lgbt issues like lgbt marriage and campaign against gay bullying precisely bec it helps their careers. they get more press and publicity and of course that influences how their acting is perceived bec acting talent’s subjective. a lot of actors would get more favorable reviews for their acting if their politics align w/ what hollywood likes. patricia heaton’s career got hurt when she became public abt being a republican. she even had to clarify that she’s not some religious psycho and supports lgbt causes. she spoke abt her difficulty landing acting jobs despite having a number of comedic awards. acting awards and casting are all subjective. they’re influenced not only by “talent” but by the actor’s politics. acting awards are never going to be prestigious bec acting isn’t a meritocracy. anyone can act. houston rockets global phenomenon jeremy lin probably has never had any acting classes. his youtube videos are hilarious and yet comedy is even more difficult than drama bec it requires precision and delivery. all that’s required of acting are delivering your lines and knowing your blocking. there really should be more racial diversity from hollywood bec those are the only requirements from acting. but tolerant hollywood is obviously against more racial diversity.

Yep I miss their relationship. Lexie loved EJ unconditionally and wanted him to be happy. I’m sure she is smiling down from heaven at him and Sami being together and thinking “I told you so little brother!” While Kristen has somewhat filled that gap she is a whole different kettle of fish. Kristen is selfish and I don’t think she would hesitate backstabbing EJ or Chad for her own advantage. We saw an example of this when Sami found out about her and Brady. EJ said to her “Did you stop to think of the problems this could cause me with Samantha?” Her reply was basically yes I did but handle it and get over it.

Sami is acting like a screaming shrew. Will is naive at best. John left Marlena. Brady seems to have had a full-frontal lobotomy & don’t get me started on the whole Chloe/Daniel/Jennifer snoozefest. I don’t blame James for not wanting to submit a scene – the material simply wasn’t there. His work with Renee when Lexie was dying was sublime – I wept right along with them both. It’s sad that the current writers are changing the characters to suit their storylines…and until TPTB at NBC, Sony & Days realize that and fix it, there’s not too many other actors/actresses who will be able to find adequate material to submit for consideration for an Emmy.

Glad the Michael Logan at TV Guide recognized James as Daytime Actor of Year 2012. I think it is interesting that DAYS has still not acknowldeged that recognition after several months. I can understand James’ comment about being disenfranchised.

Frankly, I am baffled why DAYS does not do more to promote James and the cast. It could be a timing situation due to his contract negotiations. Think his current contract is up in May. That isnt a good excuse to not acknowledge and promote accomplishments, esp by one of the show’s leading men. It is all good for the show.

I love James Scott he is indeed one of, if not the best actor on Days. The Emmys have been unfair to James. I feel he was ripped off twice. The first time being the scene he did with EJ prior to Sami shooting him ,and how he reacted during EJ being shot. The twitching was so realistic. He should have even gotten consideration for shaving off his hair (LOL). The second time was prior to the grief sex. The slow motion fall as he went into the silent scream was poignant and fantastic. It reminded me of Al Pacino’s silent scream scene in ‘The Godfather, Part III’. Yes, I am comparing Mr. Scott with an Oscar winning actor, because he is that good. This year I was hoping that he would submit a clip from the Daysaster. The scene where EJ was holding on to his Samantha with all of his strength while she dangled above the flames was definately an Emmy winning performance.

Perhaps – since he played Zach’s son Ethan before – he could portry Nathan? Ethans evil-twin? Oh MAN! I’d FLOVE to see James tell Days “Cheerio!” and bolt to where the writing was better and the storylines gave him something to DO!!!

That’s too bad. Even TV guide thought he was a shoo in.

James Scott is not the only Days actor to not participate in this years Emmy process. Let James be. The Emmy process is not what was intended, INMO. So if an actor doesn’t want to participate, leave them alone.

This is an all call to prime time TV producers and film producers don’t let this exceptional actor slip through the cracks of your talent search! James is an exceptional actor that brings it to every scene and captivates the screen like no other actor. Do yourself a favor and check out his grief scenes when his son is believed dead along with all his other heartfelt scenes. There are many other actors that got their start in Day Time Drama. He has talent that is in a league of its own, your opportunity awaits you! He is good looking and has sex appeal, but his acting is ten fold these attributes. Mr. Fairman please, please, please, get this in the hands of someone smart that will read it and take it seriously. It is criminal to over look such talent!

He always does great work. He should be proud of what he has done even if he doesn’t think the awards comity would.
