14 April 4th, 2013 Daytime Emmys Special 40th Anniversary Telecast! NATAS’ David Michaels: “People Want To See The Soap Stars, And They Will!”

With the announcement this morning from NATAS and HLN, that the Daytime Emmys are returning this year to the cable outlet for their television home to bring fans the ceremonies for a very important 40th anniversary edition of the Daytime Emmys, it looks like the Emmys may also honor achievements of soaps, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital!

In an exclusive chat with ABC Soaps In Depth, Daytime Emmy Telecast executive producer, Gabriel Gornell and NATAS Senior Executive Director, David Michaels, teased what to look for as a theme and the outlook for this year’s 40th Daytime Emmy presentation.

Gabriel Gornell stated. “We’ll definitely be looking at past, present and future with regards to daytime television. It’s our own 40th and that will anchor the theme. It’ll work nicely as we honor all the anniversaries that we’ll be celebrating at the same time.  We’re going to put particular emphasis on the wonderful clips from years past.  I can tell you everybody is excited to see wonderful clips celebrating 40 years of achievements. This year, more than any other, we’re going to be embracing that.”

In regards to how One Life to Live and All My Children will fit into all of this, (since OLTL had two weeks of airshows during the eligibility period and AMC was not on the air) David Michaels related, “Let’s just say that a lot of those actors are part of our 40 year history. So it’s certainly appropriate to have them there.”

But of course, the question on every daytime drama fans mind is, will the telecast put the soap stars and the soap categories as the main focus, and not try to back-burner them as has been attempted in past ceremonies before?  Michael’s expressed, “There are no fans like soap fans. People want to see the soap stars, and they will!”

So what do you think about the comments from Gornell and Michaels? Looking forward to the plans for this years 40th anniversary Daytime Emmy celebration so far? Let us know!

Sharon Case is the best actress Young and The Restless. Not one other actor deserves it more

Case hasn’t received an Emmy nomination in ten years. She won’t get a nomination this year. Doesn’t really matter. I don’t even watch “Bold and the Beautiful” yet even I know that Susan Flannery will win the award for Outstanding Lead Actress.

thank goodness that they’re gonna make the soaps as the main focus on the award show. would they do this to any other award show like the Tonys or the Oscars??? i can see them trying to get away with a Vegas informercial for the whole show & only give out a few awards during one of those 2.

Sadly, I haven’t enjoyed the Daytime Emmys in years. They used to show clips of those who were nominated before the winners were announced, and if I recall, they cut that out. I doubt I will be watching, especially with so few soaps left. I don’t believe they will make soaps the main focus.

I second that. Last year’s Emmy’s were horrible.

If they wanna honor the soaps and show the soap stars, how about actually showing clips of the nominated actors and shows? That’s been a staple of the Daytime Emmys for years, any awards show really, and they didn’t do it last year.

They also played this silly music that sounded like it was out of an 80s game show whenever someone would win an award. How about the actual show themes that we know and love? These are relatively minor things, but they’re things that people look for on these awards shows.

I’m glad that HLN is airing the show again. It’s certainly better than no show at all. But I just feel like if they’re gonna do it, do it the right way.

I agree, if someone is nominated show a clip from their soap and play their theme music from the show they are on when they win! Not some stupid game show music… that was really lame last year! The Daytime Emmy’s is suppose to be about the soap stars… show them in all their glory not run them through like there is a fire.
