With the announcement this morning from NATAS and HLN, that the Daytime Emmys are returning this year to the cable outlet for their television home to bring fans the ceremonies for a very important 40th anniversary edition of the Daytime Emmys, it looks like the Emmys may also honor achievements of soaps, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital!
In an exclusive chat with ABC Soaps In Depth, Daytime Emmy Telecast executive producer, Gabriel Gornell and NATAS Senior Executive Director, David Michaels, teased what to look for as a theme and the outlook for this year’s 40th Daytime Emmy presentation.
Gabriel Gornell stated. “We’ll definitely be looking at past, present and future with regards to daytime television. It’s our own 40th and that will anchor the theme. It’ll work nicely as we honor all the anniversaries that we’ll be celebrating at the same time. We’re going to put particular emphasis on the wonderful clips from years past. I can tell you everybody is excited to see wonderful clips celebrating 40 years of achievements. This year, more than any other, we’re going to be embracing that.”
In regards to how One Life to Live and All My Children will fit into all of this, (since OLTL had two weeks of airshows during the eligibility period and AMC was not on the air) David Michaels related, “Let’s just say that a lot of those actors are part of our 40 year history. So it’s certainly appropriate to have them there.”
But of course, the question on every daytime drama fans mind is, will the telecast put the soap stars and the soap categories as the main focus, and not try to back-burner them as has been attempted in past ceremonies before? Michael’s expressed, “There are no fans like soap fans. People want to see the soap stars, and they will!”
So what do you think about the comments from Gornell and Michaels? Looking forward to the plans for this years 40th anniversary Daytime Emmy celebration so far? Let us know!
