Sounds interesting….especially Anna Chancellor as “Lady Anstruther.” She would be the former employer of James Kent, who it seems given his own description was much more than merely her footman! Hmmmm….not too thrilled with some of those returning cast, though….wasn’t a fan of “Shrimpy,” as I expected him to be much more fun than he actually turned out to be, although it would be wonderful if he arrived to fetch that trashy daughter of his and whisk her back to India with him….I’m sure she could find all and sundry to dally with there!!!!

I just cant wait to watch… British need to invade America with a reality series to teach American soap writers how to write purely entertaining and classy character driven storylines that are 100% consistent and grounded for our soaps…Downtown Abby and Coronation Street RULE!!!

I’ll second that! As a long time US soap viewer, Coronation Street has nearly ruined all US soaps for me now. They’re so repetitive, predictable, and the pacing is agonizingly S-L-O-W compared to Coronation Street. That show knows how to MOVE storylines and it’s always entertaining!

Im usually never brought to tears when a character dies on our American soaps but when Hayley Cropper died on Corrie i needed a hankie…so well written! Also, the shows 50th anniversary episodes from a few years ago with the explosion and tram disaster was an amazing week!!! Love it!!!

So right you are, jimh!!! The writing of most British programs is far superior to that of their American counterparts, not simply in the soap category. (That being said, I do especially love Julian Fellowes’ magnificent work on the Abbey….ever notice his clever little between-the-lines inside homages to other people and shows? For example….Cora’s recent quip to Robert to go to bed and “dream of Ragtime,” referencing Elizabeth’s McGovern’s movie of the same name, the mention of Lord Gillingham’s surname of “Foyle” and serving together in the “war” by Charles Blake, aka Julian Ovenden, who previously starred in the “Foyle’s War” series, and the best one of all, naming the Crawley patriarch “Lord Grantham,” in tribute to the hometown of the “Iron Lady,” Margaret Thatcher, since Fellowes is an ardent Tory…Just another bit of fun that adds to the enchantment that is “Downton!”) By the way, was once a huge Eastenders fan, until my local PBS removed the show from its schedule….and right in the midst of the Steve Owen (Martin Kemp of “Spandau Ballet” fame…) storyline. Was I ever miffed!!!!

I forgot Elizabeth was in that movie…and i always like hearing those clever lines…Coronation Street does that too…i havent seen Eastenders but recently caught a glimpse of it on utube…and you can also see the Coronation Street 50th anniversary episodes i mentioned also on utube: a gas leak explosion at the tavern during a bachleor party which also causes a tram to crash into some buildings is the best special effects i ever seen on a soap!!!

Oh yes, McGovern was a passable Evelyn Nesbitt in “Ragtime.” Didn’t mind her in that particular movie, although she is certainly not one of my favorite actresses. I consider her to be one of “Downton’s” weakest characters….I recently read that Gillian Anderson was actually first offered the role of Cora and declined it, which is a shame. I prefer her more nuanced and genteel portrayals in period dramas. I’ve never seen “Coronation Street” since I don’t spend enough time watching television to justify getting cable or satellite, but I do keep up on the developments and stars in the Brit press. Guess you’ll be pleased to know that William Roache dodged his big legal bullet, so Ken Barlow will soon be returning from Canada…LOL.

Also, the actor who played Kevin is returning to Coronation who also had a similiar legal problems as W.R….hope Ken returns just in time when his married son’s mistress Tina is killed off and whodunnit follows! Also, this is the only soap with a mini plot involving a love triangle between three adults in their 70s…u dont need cable to catch the show…if you have internet and get utube you can catch a glimpse of Coronation Street in your spare time!

    Shay replied

What spare time??? Haha….but yes, you can pretty much find ANYTHING on U-Tube these days! Just ask “Sherlock”…..from “how2s” on creating fancy serviettes of art to locating evidence of Mrs. Hudson’s exotic dance past!!!!!

Point taken, but I can send you a reply a lot more quickly (while multi-tasking…) than watching U-Tube….you know how easily one thing leads to another there…and before you know it, it’s been HOURS! Lol….

As much as I dislike DA, I will tune in to see Richard Grant! If anyone can make a silk purse from a pig’s ear, he can!
