Very sad news to report this Tuesday. Downton Abbey’s series star Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) is grieving after the loss of her fiance’ John Dineen, who died at age 34 after a long bout with cancer.

Dockery was introduced to Dineen back in 2013, by Michelle’s long time ‘Downton’ castmate, Allen Leech (Branson).

John Dineen died in Cork’s Marymount Hospital on Sunday morning after being diagnosed with cancer.  It has been reported that the hospital is known for its pain management facilities in Ireland, specializing in  care services for terminally ill patients.  Dineen was being treated in London before returning home to Ireland.

A spokesman for Michelle Dockery said in a brief statement: “The family is very grateful for the support and kindness they have received but would kindly request that they are left to grieve in private.”

Michelle was just in New York City doing a promotional US tour for the premiere of Downton Abbey’s sixth and final season to air beginning in January on PBS Masterpiece.  Dockery is reported to have flown back from the US to be with her fiance’ and his family in his final hours.  A funeral service is expected to take place in Ireland on Wednesday.

Hearbreakingly, today December 15th is also Michelle Dockery’s birthday.

What absolutely awful news regarding this lovely woman! I’ve adored Michelle’s take on Lady Mary since the very beginning of Downton….her innate grace, steely fortitude and immense composure wrapped up in that perfectly porcelain personage impressed me to no end….apparently those qualities are just as imbued in the actress herself. To have witnessed her most professional and flawless promotional stateside appearances for the “Abbey” over this past week, one never could have imagined the truly devastating reality she was privately facing. Certainly bespeaks of her own “Steel Magnolia” constitution!!! Having said that, deepest of condolences to this most gifted lady….how sad that in a very real sense, life is imitating art for her!

Her poor heart! Praying for comfort, peace and rest for their family. It’s not going to be an easy holiday season for them. Praying that they are blessed to not see him struggle anymore. It is so tragic to watch a loved one go through that. Oh gosh, and he was so young. :(
