14 February 17th, 2014 Downton Abbey: Which Suitor Do You Think Is Best For Lady Mary … Charles or Lord Gillingham? Did Bates Kill Greene?

Courtesy/PBS

On last night’s episode of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece Classic, several of the stories moved forward including Bates (Brenden Coyle) suspecting that Greene (Nigel Harmon), Lord Gillingham’s (Tom Cullen) valet, raped Anna (Joanna Froggatt)!

In addition, Rose (Lily James) becoming engaged to Jack Ross (Gary Carr), and Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden) and Lord Gillingham continuing to try to woo Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery)!  Plus, what is Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) going to do with her unborn baby and?

In story highlights:  Lady Mary came to London to see Jack Ross and asked him to to break off the engagement to Rose.  Mary does make it clear that she is concerned about how society will look at the couple and make it difficult for them, more than it is about Mary having an issue with an inter-racial romance.  It also becomes clear that Rose wants to shock her mother, whom she hates, with this relationship.  Jack has already come to the same conclusions as Mary and decided to break it off with Rose.

Lady Mary tells Lord Gillingham to fire Greene, but won’t explain what she knows (that Anna was raped by the valet). Bates who is now very suspicious of Greene decides to travel to York on his day off  … or did he? Later, viewers learn that on that same day in London, Green was found dead!  The rapist apparently got into a hit and run accident after he was struck by a vehicle after accidentally falling into its oncoming path!  Now the question is, did he get pushed by Bates?  Did Bates kill him?  Or, is this all a red herring?

Meanwhile, Lady Mary had two handsome suitors who want her … Lord Gillingham and Charles Blake.  But no matter what they say to her in their attempts to woo her, she keeps insisting she is … “not on the market!”  But who do you think has the leg up on the competition? … Charles or Gillingham?

What did you think of last night’s episode of Downton Abbey?  Who do you want Mary to end up with romantically?  Do you think Bates killed Greene? Let us know!

I do not think bates killed him but maybe Gillingham investigated on his own and found out about the rape. Maybe Gillingham had him killed.

Charles Blake is definitely the best choice for Lady Mary…their initial sparring and rocky start was much like with Matthew. They challenge each other in that same opposites-attract kind of way, and now the mutual sparks are slowly beginning to ignite. Lord Gillingham is simply too much of a cookie-cutter, princely character…he is a real push-over and that never attracts the likes of Mary Crawley. She always chooses the path of most resistance. As for Bates and his possible complicity in the death of Greene, I find that far too convenient and obvious…there will be a shocking twist we don’t see coming…I am just glad that the loathsome man has gone to meet his maker…his smirking visage was getting to be quite hard to stomach with each succeeding visit to the Abbey, particularly with most of the cast completely ignorant to his dastardly deed. Finally, I thought that last evening’s episode was one of the best so far…it moved along at quite a nice pace and featured a lot of food for thought. I am already dreading the end of the current season…between that and the recent finale of “Sherlock,” it is all rather depressing.

I so agree with you about Mary. She definitely needs a strong man to reign her in and put a little excitement in her life. Charles has so much chemistry with her as opposed to Gillingham. He is such a bore. Mary would walk all over him and he would let her! Bates so did NOT have anything to do with Greene’s demise. I am so glad that he met with a horrible end. He was a horrible human being. I really hope Anna can move past this and finally have her happy ending with Bates. On a lighter note, I watched Nottinghill this past weekend and was delighted to realize that the character of Bernie the stockbroker was played by none other than Hugh Bonneville! He was just delightful as the bumbling stockbroker! I wish this show would go on all year. I will miss it so much. I just can’t understand why American tv can’t be as entertaining and gripping as English tv. Such a shame.

I’m with you, Ronni…I always miss “Downton” during its “down time!” But at least “Mr. Selfridge” will soon be returning….another great program. That’s the thing about PBS….you can always find other quality Brit shows to fill the gap, even if they are of a slightly different nature. I know exactly what you mean about the delight of spotting the “Abbey” actors in other roles: Miss O’Brien was on an old “Hetty Wainthropp,” Mrs. Hughes played Kenneth Branagh’s ex-wife in “Wallander,” and most shockingly, the mild-mannered Molesley portrayed a serial killer on “Scott and Bailey.” That latter one was seriously creepy and I shall never be able to look at the bumbling milquetoast in the same way after that!!!!

Try your local PBS website…they may have info on that. Mine actually re-ran the entire series from last summer through the fall, so I watched every episode again, and more than once at that. Not sure how far back their archives go for downloading episodes to watch at your leisure….same for ITV and their website. At the very least, you may be able to get a download at Amazon or check for the DVD versions at your public library???

You’re welcome….when I used Bing I saw a number of sites which were supposed to offer free online episodes of the first season, including PBS, but maybe they are now inactive. At any rate, good luck in your search…..

Geez, I hope Bates did NOT kill Greene. It would mean the character was leaving and that would be too sad. Please no!
Charles Blake for Mary of course.

Don’t mean to be a spoiler, but today’s DailyMail ran a feature showing Lady Mary kissing Lord Gillingham in a scene they were filming for the upcoming season. Hope it is just a red herring and that Charles Blake will be her true intended!

I don’t think I want Mary to be ‘reigned in ‘ as someone said..i like her strength, determination and being fearless.. she is a bold beautiful light and is so like ‘grand ma-ma’ … I can’t imagine any man wanting to reign Grand ma-ma in..can u? lololol She is spirited and above all smart! As for Rose–she will pick up with some ne’er do well soon enough so she can just see ”mummy’s face’… I love this show! and I think the writers want us to think Bates killed Greene..in a way I hope he did and never gets caught; but the idea of Gilliam having it done is interesting too.

I do not know why but something makes me think that Bates did not kill Greene. We have been down that path before with the whole “Vera thing” but seriously if he killed Greene that is pretty predictable. I don’t know why everyone keeps saying that Gillingham is not man enough for Mary, I think he is the better choice actually simply because he knows how to run things on an estate and he would be better support for Mary’s grief over Matthew’s death. Watch someone else is going to come out of know where to take Mary or maybe Dan Stevens will make a sudden return in a nick of time. Joke.
