28 February 18th, 2013 Downton Abbey’s Sad Turn Of Events Season Three Finale!

Courtesy/MasterpiecePBS

Well “Downton” fans, last night was the highly anticipated and much heard about season three finale of the award winning British soapy drama.  And what a finish! As had been reported months ago, actor Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley) decided not to renew his contract with the series for the fourth season, thus leaving Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes with a decision of what to do with the character.

Fellowes chose to kill Matthew off in a car crash, that was set-up so we all would reach for the hankies!  In fact, after new father, Matthew meets his newborn son, the new heir of the family, he praises his beloved Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and gushes how he falls more in love with her each day, if that is even possible!

As Matthew drive his car to tell the family of the news of the heir, he collides with another vehicle, and we see a lifeless body of Matthew as the season comes to a close. But not before one last shot of Lady Mary and her son waiting with excitement for Matthew and her family to be together to celebrate in the birth of her child! The anguish!

This season,” Downton” took us on a hankie-filled ride, killing off Lady Sybil (Jessica-Brown Findlay) who died after giving birth from eclampsia and leaving hubby Tom (Alan Leech) a widower and a single father.  In the season finale, a grief-stricken and tearful Tom admitted , “I can’t bear to be without her!”

So soapers, what do you think about Matthew’s sudden death? Do you think Tom and Lady Mary might get together in season four with their two children?  Reports are that casting is underway for a new love interest for Dockery’s Mary! What did you think of this season of Downton Abbey?  Let us know!

I think they should have recast the role. Disappointed they didn’t and disappointed Dan left, but at least he left an heir. :-) I’ve enjoyed the season. Had a lot of teary moments.

Omg! Was so sad. I just loved Matthew. He was so down to earth. I don’t know what that pretentious stick up the butt Mary will do now. Tom? Never for queen Mary!

Well I am quite frankly thunderstruck at this turn of events.

I sensed that something untoward was about to happen when I saw Matthew joyously driving on the road while we watched as Lady Mary was holding her son.

I didn’t want to believe that Matthew was dead as he lay underneath the wreck of his car. I still don’t.
Yet this amazing production has handed us a lot of surprises and not all of them have been pleasant.
My heart was broken with the death of Lady Sybil and now Matthew….Oh dear!

Waiting till January 2014 for Season 4 will indeed be torture for all of, but one thing we have all learned from the British…. is to keep our “Chin-up.”

We will continue to follow the brilliance of Mr. Fellows’ Downton Abbey” even though our hearts are broken at this sad turn of events.

I just started watching this season. Did I miss something between last week’s episode and this week’s season ending? Did a year go by, did they mention it was a year later? Was I in a coma for 9 months? Last week ended with Mary trying to get pregnant and this week she was about to drop. I guess I don’t understand how these English soaps work. Would it have made more sense to have this week’s be the beginning of next season? Am I too logical? Do I ask too many questions? Arrgghhh!!

Yes. There was a little banner at the bottom of the screne that said it was a year later when the show began.

I actually like that they tend to speed things up. With only 7 eps or so a year, I guess they have to, but it does keep things moving.

I’m new to the show, and didn’t hear about Dan Stevens’ departure, so Matthew’s death was devastating to me. He’s not only one of my favorite characters, but I had high hopes that he would dump Mary, and go after Edith, whom I love. I’ve caught up on my DA news now, so it looks like Mary won’t be sad for too long when season 4 picks up.

Wow. Didn’t see that coming especially with Sybil’s death a few weeks ago. Mary is such a shrew; I was hoping her new family life would make her a little more likable. I feel so sorry for Cora who just wants peace and her family to stay intact. Can’t wait for season 4!

Although I hadn’t heard about Dan Stevens departure, I knew as soon as everyone started gushing about him during the episode. That and when he was in the car I knew he’d crash – Soap Opera 101 – nobody gets to be that happy and if they get in a car they are doomed! That said, I’m devastated. Wish they had him disfigured or something and replaced with another actor next season. U.S. soap fans are used to that! Oh, and by the way Mary will never go for Tom

a great loss for the show, Sybil and Matthew were fan favorites from day one, recasting either one would not have worked for me. I wish them bothe the best. Tom is too weak for Mary she needs someone new. I hope no too soon either. I feel for Momma Crawley, to lose a child at any age is the worst thing that may happen to anyone with a heart and soul.

only maggie smith is keeping downton abbey afloat. the show has become a mess. of course they have to demonize o’brien bec she’s using the orientation of thomas against him. o’brien and thomas were the villains but of course thomas must be softened bec downton is making a statement abt lgbt issues. this is how hollywood operates. hollywood keeps lecturing people abt being tolerant towards lgbt community and yet hollywood loves bashing racial minorities and especially Asian americans. hollywood keeps speaking against gay bullying and gay suicide. yet the Office of Minority Health (OMH) and National Asian Women’s Health Organization (NAWHO) has reported that Asian American girls ages 15 to early 20s die from suicide at a higher rate than all other groups and the huffington post has reported that Asian american students are the most bullied group compared to all other groups. where’s hollywood screaming against the suicide rates among Asian american female teenagers? where are the “it gets better” campaigns of hollywood against Asian american bullying? of course hollywood won’t speak against those issues bec hollywood’s blatantly racist towards Asian americans. everything is abt publicity for hollywood actors and actresses. speaking against Asian american bullying and Asian american female suicides won’t get actors and actresses any press. it’s trendy to speak for lgbt issues while speaking against Asian american bullying and suicide won’t help an actor’s career. it’s the same thing w/ writers and tv shows. it’s a strategic move for abbey to speechify abt lgbt issues w/ thomas coming out and mrs. hughes being his straight ally bec these are favorable stances among hollywood. usa network doesn’t get “critical acclaim” and its ratings are not great. what does it do? it creates a “chars unite. i wont stand for” campaign w/c feels really dated. usa network’s campaigning against homophobia and bullying and of course racism. yet how many tv shows does usa network have w/ Asian american leading chars? if they wanna stop discrimination then hollywood should look at their own backyard. usa’s “neccessary roughness” is a soap abt a sports psychologist providing psychotherapy to professional athletes. now that soap has a professional athlete who comes out. espn hires writer from “the advocate” to talk abt how a professional athlete should come out of the closet. espn has articles advocating same gender marriage. the mainstream manhattan media and entertainment press and sports media keep praising athletes and hollywood personalities who speak against gay bullying. it’s a concerted effort from sports media and entertainment press and hollywood to keep presenting real and fictional narratives w/c encourage coming out and lgbt issues being discussed. it’s bec tolerance towards the gay community is the only kind of tolerance that hollywood and the entertainment press and sports media prefer. and yet the sports media and sports commentators love to bash houston rockets foundational piece Jeremy Lin who is the only Asian american athlete from the nba. “necessary roughness” has a coming out storyline of a professional athlete bec hollywood and the mainstream media would like a professional athlete to come out. “political animals” has a white gay char who’s part of the presidential family. “white collar” has a gay char and obviously its leading man is openly gay white actor matt bomer. usa network can have openly gay white actor matt bomer portray a romantic leading man. but usa network has no Asian american leading chars. all of usa network’s shows have very little racial diversity and majority white chars. yet they’re lecturing people on tolerance. hilarious!

    bc,

You have some amazing things to say, but unfortunately, I cannot read one huge paragraph as it hurts my head (migraine).

Also if you want to be taken seriously, you should capitalize the beginnings of your sentences and try to use better sentence structure. I realize in this day and age there is a tendency to abbreviate everything, but to people like me, it shows maturity.

I am only commenting because I see this one big paragraph from you every time. I typically do not read posts from people who use all CAPS or write as if they are sending a text message. And I know I am not perfect with my posts either, but I promise you that if you formulate your posts into something I can read without giving me a migraine, I WILL respond … if that is what you want. :-)

What does Downton Abbey have to do with Hollywood again????

I am hoping that they jump ahead again in Season 4 so that if Mary is going to meet someone new a good amount of time will have passed. I think Fellowes would do that seeing as it took forever to get Mary & Matthew together.

Although, Violet must be hitting 90 soon. She was talking about attending balls in the 1860′s. Much as I would hate to see her go, she could be Season 4′s death. ( I joked to a friend that the dog was going to outlive everyone at this rate.)

And, no, I don’t see Mary & Tom getting together.

What should prove interesting is what will Robert do now that he will be solely in charge again. Will he revert back to his old bad management style or continue moving forward with Matthew’s ideas?

I’m the only person on earth who doesn’t like DA, though I watched seasons 1 and 2 hoping it would sink in. I won’t rag on the show here but I don’t think it lives up to the hype. IMO

I was not that surprised. I read that the man who played Matthew was in a play on Broadway.I avoided spoilers like the plague, and I didn’t want to know what was going to happen. I am sorry he is dead,I will miss him. I Liked The character a lot,he was sweet, and not full of himself. I guess all there is to say is its a soap, and life on them goes on.
Mary will have her son when they return, and I guess by his age we will be able to tell how much time has passed. He had to give them an heir,I think that’s why it went so fast, fast to us because we are use to it,plus they knew Matthew wasn’t returning and him and Mary were a popular couple.
I want to see Anna and Bates have a child next, she is young, and they could all grow up together.
I do not want to see Tom with Mary.
I think Robert will work with Tom,because if you watched the history of where they film this, they keep going by doing what Matthew,Tom and Robert were going to do. Bake cakes, raise sheep, make the farms more profitable, grow things etc, etc, etc. This will keep things at Downton Abbey going and keep the show going really.

I was devastated to see what happened to Matthew. Even though Dan Stevens wanted to leave, I feel anyone can be replaced. it will be very hard to find a character thought brought so much to the table as Matthew. he’s more like most viewers than the other characters- more middle class. he saved Downton Abbey more than once. he’s very sympathetic and made Mary a better person. I was hoping that Americans could write tons of letters and get Julian Fellowes to change his mind and replace Dan. But I read that they have already started or are about to start filming. If American soap fans can get OLTL and AMC back , I was hoping we could get a new Matthew. I do not think Tom and Mary would make sense. She is still a snob, though she seems to have warmed to Tom very much. But it would be too much of a cliche. I hope that she will be a good mother. And I’m ready for Edith to find someone- even if it’s not permanent. But not a married man.
