On-Air On-Soaps spoke this afternoon with Drew Garrett, the former Michael Corinthos of General Hospital on his Daytime Emmy nomination announced today in the Outstanding Younger Actor Category for the 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards being handed out on June 27th in Las Vegas. Drew shared his elation, and the bittersweet moment in his career!
Drew on how he found out he was nominated: “I found out through the east coast from some family members who were not taking the time change on the west coast into consideration, because it was 6AM in L.A. I woke up very early. And my day began after that, because I could not go back to sleep, because it was such awesome news. My mind was spinning. Thee best thing to wake up too! Later, I spoke with Maurice Benard (Sonny) who was my on-camera dad, but I felt like he was my off-camera dad at times. One thing that he said that reminded me of how he is such a great guy… was when I said to him, “Oh Maurice. I was bummed you did not get nominated!” But he said, “You know what man? Even if I had my nomination, I would give it up as long as you got yours.”
Drew on what episode he submitted that earned him the nod: “What I submitted was the aftermath of Claudia’s death in early November. It is where I come to my dad’s house and remembered I killed Claudia. There is also a huge montage in it that I liked, and that was another reason that I chose it. It showed this wide variety of awesome material I got to work with throughout the year. And I thought, “What a great way to show the blue-ribbon panel who are judging so they don’t have to do the work on the back-story, and, they don’t have to say, “What is this about?” There are some other great scenes and levels in it. Another great scene was one with Brandon Barash (Johnny) where Johnny comes in, in defense of his sister, and it ends with Michael saying, “She got what she deserved!” I am really lucky to have had a jam packed episode.”
Drew on his loyal fan base wanting to know how he is doing since the quick untimely exit from GH: “I have been doing really well, and obviously the aftermath of me leaving GH was watered-down by these awesome fans of mine. Now it’s a glorious day, and I am nominated and I have an audition to go to, and I am soaking it all up.”
Drew on his departure from GH: “Everything happens for a reason, and I have really come to terms of it quite well. And the nomination is bittersweet, but it’s a lot sweeter than it is bitter. (Laughs) I will be looking down memory lane. I am glad that the universe made that decision for me, and curtailed my time at GH….definitely sooner than I expected. It was a great experience. I embrace change . I am looking forward. It’s the new Drew. You know what? The thing is I take every experience ,and use it as a lesson. I am coming out of this even more fierce and raw than I was going into GH. Not only do I have the professional experiences under my belt, but I have also experienced the cutthroat stuff that comes with the territory.”
Drew on hitting the red carpet in Las Vegas on June 27th : ”I might even bust out a tux. I mean, Vegas, the after parties, and I am 21 now. I have been to Vegas many times, but this will be my first time being 21!”
