Last night, Dancing with the Stars debuted its 17th season with an actually stellar cast that not only brings talent and fun, but some inspirational drama to the ballroom dance floor competition, and from the looks of the opener, this looks to be quite the competitive season on the ABC series.
Soap stars did exceptionally well! So let’s start with One Life to Live’s and High School Musical favorite, Corbin Bleu! Corbin was trending all afternoon yesterday on Twitter with #teamcorbin, and expectations were high for him in the competition and he did not disappoint! What was disappointing for soap fans is that DWTS did not mention Corbin’s association with OLTL, but given the fact that ABC is in a lawsuit with Prospect Park over OLTL, you can sort of buy the rationale.
Corbin performed with Karina Smirnoff a contemporary style dance routine, which was first for Karina after 15 seasons on the show. The judges scored them a very respectable 24!
Pretty Little Liars, and Days of our Lives guest star, Brant Daugherty and his partner Peta Murgatroyd were actually the first couple to dance, and the self-proclaimed “single threat” shows the potential to be “double threat” after he earned a 22 from the judges showing some sexy moves in their Cha Cha and the ability to be quite a threat moving forward in the competition.
However, Glee’s Amber Riley really wowed the ballroom audience with her moves, dancing with last season’s champ, Derek Hough! Amber who said she wanted to show girls at home that you can be a girl with some size on her and still go out and show the world you can dance had the highest total of the night with 27.
And how about former Saved by the Bell and Showgirls star, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren? She had Val Chemerkovskiy (GH’s Kelly Monaco’s former partner) as her dance partner and they earned a 24 with a stylish Contemporary Dance.
Elsewhere, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi showed she can bust-a-move in a solid routine with Sasha Farber scoring a 23! This duo is the shortest in stature duo ever on the show! But it was Valerie Harper, who is dancing at age 73 after being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, and Jack Osbourne, who is ballroom dancing for the first time who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, that really showed the inspirational spirit and power of the new season! What about the cutaway to Jack’s mom, Sharon Osbourne in tears after watching her son’s dance performance? Very touching! Harper scored a 21 with her foxtrot, and Osbourne scored a 23 with his foxtrot!
So out of the gate, what performance do you think was the best on last night’s Dancing with the Stars? Check out Corbin, Brant and Amber’s performance below! Then, who do you think should be the first to go? Our pick to get the axe, Keyshawn Johnson!
