48 September 30th, 2016 DYNASTY Reboot On The Way At The CW!

Huge news on Friday for longtime fans of the iconic 80′s primtime soap, Dynasty!  The CW has been developing a high-profile project, which is a reboot of the series to air next season.

The duo responsible for Gossip Girls, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage return to the network withh Dynasty, and have teamed with Revenge writer-producer Sallie Patrick and Dynasty original series creators, and Esther Shapiro & Richard Shapiro for the contemporary 2.0 version!

According to Deadline: The new Dynasty follows two of America’s wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they feud for control over their fortune and their children. The series will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington, daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington, and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal, a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class.  And there lies the spin on the premise of the original Dynasty, which focused on oil tycoon Blake Carrington (John Forsythe), whose daughter Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin) resents Blake’s much younger former secretary Krystle Jennings (Linda Evans), to whom he is about to get married. Cristal will be a version of the Krystle character in the CW version, while adding diversity in its approach.

Schwartz and Savage will executive produce though their Fake Empire banner alongside Patrick and the Shapiros. Patrick will serve as showrunner if the project moves forward. Fake Empire’s Lis Rowinski is as co-executive producer.

Soap fans remember the original Dynasty aired on ABC from 1981-89, and featured the scheming Alexis Carrington played by Joan Collins. It is unknown as this time if the reboot will utilize the character of Alexis.

So, what do you think of the upcoming soapy reboot? Who do you hope winds up in the cast and playing what role? Share your casting suggestions and your thoughts of the concept of Dynasty 2.0 in the comment section below!

There is ONLY ONE Alexis, and that is Joan Collins! If Alexis comes back it had better be Joan!

This is a reboot – not a continuation. Joan Collins, although still beautiful at 83, would be too old to play the first wife of a new (probably 50ish) Blake.

Emma would be a clever way to tie into original series. Joan could play a never-before seen mother of Alexis.

This sounds interesting. I loved Dynasty. Not sure how I feel about covering the same ground as the original series from the perspective of Fallon and Krystle. I’d rather see where the families are now. But, I’m willing to give it a go. They have to include Alexis!!!!!!!!! She is a vital part of the story. I hope they get someone really good. It’s going to be hard to follow Joan Collins.

I agree. A revival would be more interesting with the next generation along with appearances by original cast members in their original roles.

I’m excited to check it out. I will admit that I never watched the original ( I was a little too young at that time ), but it sounds like it has a good line up of people in charge. I hope that it fares better than the Dallas reboot, which I absolutely loved and still can’t believe that they ended it the way that they did!

I absolutely loved TNT’s Dallas reboot too! I was very disappointed not only because it was cancelled way too soon, but also because it ended with a HUGE cliffhanger! A much better way would have been to have ended the TNT series with a 4 to 6 part miniseries finale, the same way that Dallas began with a 5 part miniseries on CBS.

By now, Fallon is a 60 year old woman. I would hope she is not still worried about her father’s love life!!

The original was classic. If this isn’t going to be a continuation of the original, just leave it alone. Create a new show and don’t even tie it into Dynasty. Also, 2.0 usually implies that you’re bringing over original cast and characters into the new show and mixing them up with new characters that might be related to the originals in some way. (Melrose Place 2.0, Dallas 2.0, 90210 – 2.0)

The more superficial, need-to-drop-out-for-a-while, part of me is tentatively looking forward to this reboot because I liked the original Dynasty, the more current Revenge, and even the last incarnation of Dallas if only to watch Judith Light.

But you can’t have Dynasty without Alexis!!! But I don’t know who can fill Joan Collins shoes (or hats) for this role. Or a Linda Evans or John Forsyth.

Just fyi, for younger viewers Alexis didn’t appear until right at the end of the first season. She was wearing a hat with a veil covering her face, so we didn’t know it would Joan Collins until the veil was lifted up. at the time there were rumours that it would be Sophia Loren. with this reboot, they could be including her at a later date, like the mid-season final.

It’ll be tricky to capture the essence of the original but I hope they succeed. And, I hope they use a lot of the available stars from daytime soaps to gain a loyal following (if it’s well-written and produced).

I agree with you about casting available stars from daytime soaps..How about Robin Strasser as Alexis? Reboots usually are not as good but will watch and hopefully it will work.

The new Alexis would have to be in her 50′s. Daytime alumni who might be a good Alexis:
    Emma Samms
    Finola Hughes
    Andrea Evans
    Robin Mattson

Me too. I’m not happy that the the CW is changing the Krystle character to be hispanic. And although I loved the original Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin), making her the focus of the story is also offputting.

No-no-no— the original aired before the advent of reality television and the internet– in the 80′s we were happy to watch a show about the richest 1 percent– but now– seeing celebrities and the wealthy air their scandals and dirty laundry out there for all to see I don’t think a reboot Dynasty would be able to compete– there isn’t anything they could write that hasn’t been seen in real life– and no one has the appetite anymore to be the least bit interested in the lives of people who live so far from what real life is for most people– so a spoiled rich kid doesn’t like her new step mommy who is Hispanic — big deal, no drama there— Dynasty was a product of its generation– which has so long past– the Dallas reboot was mildly successful because it was more an continuation than a reboot- there were familiar faces as well as new ones– but this one is trying to re live the glory days of the 80′s while that is the trend right now– I don’t think it will last long should it even get to air.

I agree with Mary ~ the 80′s were their own time, a time that has come and gone, when everyone didn’t walk down the street looking down at their phones and everything wasn’t “on-line” and fashion seemed to dominate the scene (more than today’s more casual overall look) – sure, they could update things without any problem, but the whole premise of the show, which seemed to say “just look and see, money can’t really buy happiness” has been done to death. While continuing night time or on-line dramas may occasionally do all right, it doesn’t seem like a revisit to the Carrington clan would excite many.

Schwartz and Savage are definitely the team for this project but I think they should take the DALLAS approach and have the new DYNASTY be about the next generation of Carringtons and Colbys (Krystina, Danny, L.B., and Lauren) with Heather Locklear’s Sammi Jo and Joan Collins’ Alexis showing the younger set how things are done.

Might check this out, but not certain… would have rather have seen a next generation thing with Emma Samms Fallon as the “new” Alexis! The hispanic woman could have been Jeff’s (John James) new wife!

Same with Dark Shadows…the original is a classic and despite its flaws!…the remakes were never as addictive…i did like the 1990 version but it was only half good…the 2004 pilot never aired but i seen clips of it…looked too much like a totally different show…The movie version with Johnny Depp had some good moments here and there but it lacked in the story department, some miscasting, and some not fully developed characters…Johnny Depp wore that stupid white makeup he wore in several other of his movies!!!…i still wouldnt mind a primetime version of Edge Of Night-the best mystery series ever but without Henry Slezar the shows brilliant writer i doubt it would work as well!!!

Dallas came back on TNT and now Dynasty on CW? Those two networks know nothing about how to handle a former powerhouse. TNT moved Dallas around so much that the avid viewer could never find it! Don’t expect the show to survive. And without Alexis?

I question how good this could actually be. The original had a HUGE budget. I cannot imagine the Carrington mansion being as grande in this version. What about the show opening? That was one of its signatures too. Would that be the same? Would it still be in Denver? Gays are mainstream now, so how would you alter the Steven storyline to remain relevant, but interesting? Would Sammie Joe be Hispanic also?

I’m with the others in that this show should be a continuation, not a reboot.

I’m a super huge fan BUT I think it should not relive the original series but pick up years later like Dallas reboot did. There were several children plus Kristina Carrington. There’s only one Alexis and one Crystal. Not sure if this is something I wanna look at. It might not live up to the original.
