While the ratings have been less than stellar, but with a move to Friday night’s and the addition of Nicollette Sheridan as Alexis Carrington which saw an uptick, the CW announced it has officially renewed Dynasty for a second season!

According to Deadline on the surprise renewal: “The reboot of the classic 1980s soap has a lucrative distribution deal with Netflix for CBS TV Studios, whose parent CBS co-owns the CW. Additionally, the CW brass hope that the arrival of Nicollette Sheridan as Alexis Carrington would provide the spark that Joan Collins delivered when she joined the original series as Alexis in Season 2.”

The CW also renewed Riverdale, Jane the Virgin, The Flash, Arrow and Supernatural among others.

This version of Dynasty is like a bad cartoon. The one good thing they have is Alan Dale as Anders.

The “real” Dynasty was great-full of 80′s soapy goodness! I haven’t checked out this version, and I don’t plan on it. We had Dynasty, Dallas, and Knots Landing in the 80′s-such great drama!

Linda, I am with you on both counts. I had never watched anything on CW until Riverdale premiered. Both shows are enjoyable.

Hooray! I’m surprised and pleased. The writing (especially some of the one-liners) is smart, campy, and fun. This show is my guilty pleasure.

Joan Collins, the original Alexis Carrington, came in with incoming writers Eileen and Robert Mason Pollock. No such luck for Nicolette Sheridan. She is good, but the show is crap.

I’m happy. It’s not the old Dynasty that I loved, but there are a number of familiar elements and a lot of newer ones that keep me tuning in. Glad it’ll be around for another season.

Cannot believe this decision based on the anemic ratings. The CW though does give its series a chance, more than other outlets. (And a sweet distribution deal helps.) This DYNASTYreally is less a reboot than a new soap using familiar names and relationships. It is not especially memorable but it is naughty frothy fun. Maybe producers will tweak some with the opportunity of a secure future. I miss the slow builds those 1980s primetime soaps had. Now it seems every episode has to have an over-the-top moment or quickly resolved arc. (Thanks EMPIRE!) Wonder where the show will land. I hope The CW has a plan to reintroduce Season 1 to build interest,.

Actually this IS a reboot! This is where it is important to understand the difference between a reboot and a revival! A revival is a continuation of some sort from the original ala 90210 and Melrose Place! A reboot is a reinvention of the original using the same concept and hitting the reset button. It is a new way of telling the old story. Keep in mind Dynasty has NEVER been a classy show. It has always been a trashy larger than life drama! It has always been a guilty pleasure with over the top stories and scenery chewing characters. It has always been light hearted and was never like Empire or even Riverdale! Frankly, I think the show accomplishes everything it sets out to accomplish. If you are looking for grounded stories then it isn’t the show for you. The Carrington are NOT everyday people they are so far removed from the first generations that they were born with silver spoons in their mouths! Don’t watch for reality watch for its flashy cheese because that is exactly what it is meant to be! Gawdy you say? Check out the original because it too was Gawdy and flashy and far from grounded… it was like any other 80s Primetime Soap, save Knots Landing! As for rebroadcasting season one, the series currently airs on international versions of NETFLlX and plays out at the same time we view the series! It will be available for streaming in its entirety on Netflix US once it finishes here!

Ratings are irrelevant when a show has a lucrative streaming deal that allows for worldwide distribution with a same-day window, similar to that of Riverdale.

That will, at the very least, guarantee Dynasty two season tops. And yeah, I share your hope that the reboot will make needed tweaks.

When Dallas did their reboot a few years back, they did it the right way…. they brought back JR, Bobby, and Sue Ellen, but their grown kids were introduced as primary characters. The idea -in the long term – was to pass the torch off to the kids entirely.

It only went wrong when Larry Hagman passed away, and even with the new characters, the show wasn’t ready to function without the presence of JR Ewing. (This should be a lesson to critics of another show who are constantly demanding the lead character be written off)

Had Larry & JR survived, I believe the “new” Dallas would still be going today. But this so-called “Dynasty” without any legitimate ties to the past show… I don’t see it going more than another year.

Riverdale…. that’s a whole other story. I just don’t think of the Archie cartoons when I watch that show, and then it’s OK. The characters & the writing are enough to sustain the show on it’s own, despite the characters coincidentally having the same name as a comic book or a 60′s bubblegum band.

Dallas was a great reboot-done in an honorable way which paid homage and respect to the original series. The acting and storylines were great! I can’t believe it was cancelled! I loved it! Strange to think that Larry is gone-what an icon!

Dallas was a revival because it continued on the same storyline! Dynasty is reboot because while it used the same characters it retold the story in a different way. They are two totally different concepts! The creators of the original Dynasty work on this one as well. There goal was a reboot aka a retelling NOT a revival aka continuation! They have in fact done what was expected! If you want the original story check it out on The CW seed app!

I think the show has a chance to improve its ratings now that Nicolette has joined the cast. The original wasn’t a hit until the second season when Joan Collins joined the cast.
