This morning at the ABC TCA (Television Critics Association) Summer Press Tour, the cast of the new Disney/ABC syndicated talk show series FABLife took to the stage to discuss their new series debuting this fall, and how it’s different than all the other talk shows in the daytime line-up.
The series anchored by this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards host and America’s Top Model exec, Tyra Banks, is returning to the daytime landscape. Tyra this to say to the share to the press about her love for daytime, the way the daytime viewing audience is perceived, how FABLife will be very different than any other gabfest, and more.
Tyra on daytime talk shows: “I grew up on daytime being at my grandma’s house watching Donahue with her, and Sally Jesse Raphael, and then later when I was in high school, Ricki Lake and then Oprah Winfrey, and the list goes on and on. I am a big fan, and of course, produced and had my own show. But what I noticed over time is that I feel that from a producing standpoint, shows have the same kind of content, the same-looking set, maybe a little different colors, same kind of theme song, the same segment, the same everything … just add another new person, just add a different person, etc.”
Tyra on the same ole’ same ole’ and lack of creativity that has hindered the day-part: “I think what is kind of hurting daytime right now, is not enough innovation. When I look at primetime and look at How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal or what Netflix is doing with Orange is the New Black, or what Amazon Prime is doing with Transparent. They’re taking chances, they’re taking risks, and saying, “We’re just going to go all the way out, and we hope this stuff sticks.” I feel like daytime is a little tentative. But, I’ve got to say we ain’t scared up in here.
Tyra on on how the daytime audiences deserve better: “From our theme song, which is not a jingle, it’s a single – to our pop art on our set which is like no other daytime set – if it’s done before, we’re like make it different! I think people deserve that in daytime. I think many people think they can talk down to the people watching daytime, but they’re savvy.” They deserve to be entertained and enlightened and taught. And it doesn’t have to be the same old, same old.
FABLife also stars Chrissy Teigan, Lauren Makk, Joe Zee, and Leah Ashley.
