105 December 24th, 2016 GENERAL HOSPITAL: A Julexis Christmas!

Courtesy/ABC

On Friday’s Christmas episode of General Hospital, it was the duo, Julexis, who have had a year of debauchery between them somehow manage to come together in a kiss on Christmas Eve (even though Alexis  (Nancy Lee Grahn) was becoming quite schnokered in the process).

How did that moment come about?  While camped out at Alexis’ house, Julian (William deVry) is questioned by her about the sketchy phone call he just received. Instead of answering her, he sidesteps the question.  And that sends Alexis, who was prepping an icebag for Julian’s wounds, to use the ice to pour herself a stiff drink as her only way to deal with the situatiom, especially after Julian tells her there are some things she doesn’t know. As they become the “bickerstens”, Alexis is panicked by a knock at the door.  She knows her kids would let her have it if they knew she was hiding Julian!

But lo and behold it turns out to be a delivery man with a Christmas tree in tow.   An emotional Julian asks Alexis to decorate ithe tree with him and try and make a real Christmas out of this, and to somehow put aside all the stabbings, killings, attempted murders, and hit and runs between them!

As Alexis hears this and continues to drink, she flashes on a happier time when Julexis had their nuptials.  She recalls how happy she was then and how she believed he was a changed man.   Julian with tears in his eyes assures Alecxis that he deep down, loves her and always will.  Alexis says “Cheers!” to that and boozes it up, yet again.

Julian, who didn’t miss a beat here, offers her an Xmas gift. When Alexis opens the present, an ornament with their wedding photo emblazed on it is the gift.  A sorrowful Julian apologizes again for hurting Alexis so much.

He tells her, “You are my breath, you are my heartbeat. Alexis, you are my life.” Finally their eyes lock on each other.  Alexis, albeit drunk, says she sees Julian she fell in love with through him and whispers, “There you are.  I see you.  I see you.”  Cue the kiss!

First, let’s say that we could not have loved William deVry’s performance in this episode more.  Emotional, tender, strong, contained, but so sad, he played all the right beats as Julian.. And as for Nancy Lee Grahn, what can you say that is not been said.  Her portrayal of a woman with a battle with the bottle, and playing Alexis’ push-pull of her feelings for her man has continued to be riveting throughout this storyline.

So, what did you think of the Julexis Christmas scenes? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

I guess the only excuses I can come up with for Alexis’ weakness is that she was drunk (ish) and that Mr. DeVry is really sexy. Other than that, the knife to the throat thing is normally a turn-off for me.

Agreed, it is an insult to me as a Feminist and Julian was never anything but another guy from a crazy mob family who likes murder, control, manipulation. He never truly changed and apologized to core characters. Even NLG’s acting cannot rise above the many reasons this isn’t working.

Besides that, “I see you,” is eerily close to the Classic GH scene where Stone says those words to Robin before he dies. Have a little respect and don’t use those exact words for a drunken, abused woman looking at her abuser.

    Marzy Dotes replied

Eh I’m a feminist who knows not to look at soaps for that. Julian wasn’t someone who tried to kill the women he loved, Cheryl or Alexis until just recently. They did a 180 on Julian because his evolution made him more rootable than Sonny’s, period. Julian NEVER harmed or fantasized about harming the women he loved whether that be Cheryl or Alexis. IMO they destroyed him overnight to prop up Sonny. Too bad, because the show’s ratings during the summer were the show’s lowest ever.

William deVry’s performance was excellent with this script. I so wish the storyline writing of him attempting to kill Alexis had never happened. I think Julian and Alexis were a couple that seemed to belong together, but his twisted love for power and revenge seemed stronger. I don’t know if he can ever redeem himself and if they can get back together. It may make for an interesting storyline as there’d be plenty of reaction from family and friends. Nancy has done a great job playing Alexis struggling with alcoholism. But, I’m ready to see that storyline be moved on from by her getting some help.

They better explain Julian’s previous actions away– like he was forced to try to kill her by this mystery boss of his– otherwise need to do a proper story about women trapped in abusive relationships– because right now that is Alexis is– the husband beats the wife, nearly murders her and then he says he is sorry, he loves her, she is everything to him, and she forgives him and makes rationalization for his abuse and the cycle starts again. I know Julian never hit Alexis, but he try to kill her and now he is abusing her emotionally by forcing her to look after him– so either really redeem the man– a evil twin brother did the dirty deeds– whatever– or else tell it like it is– don’t romanticize abuse– this isn’t romantic, this is sick– unless again they rewrite history and make Julian the good guy instead of the a$$ who tried to murder his wife.

    Rebecca1 replied

Hi Mary…this is a tough call. I wouldn’t’ t call what happened between Alexis and Julian as abuse. Crime of passion perhaps…an act of desperation born out of devastation. I truly don’t believe Julian would have actually killed Alexis. I think he loved her then and loves her still. He was enraged, scared, betrayed (in his mind), about to lose everything and everyone…and snapped. Other than this “episode” and I say this rather tongue and cheek…there was never any abuse; they were devoted to each other. So for whatever reason the hideous chain of events unfurled it was isolated. I wouldn’t be so forgiving in reality but in the world of GH…I’m open to accepting a plausible (in soap terms) reason for the madness. I like them together.

I know Nancy Grahn is an activist, and a champion of women’s rights, so I’m wondering if she has any say as to why (IF) Alexis would consider getting back together with Julian. I’m hoping it ties into the person who’s controlling him. It’d be great if he acted on orders (just playing along to make it LOOK like he was going to kill her)..

Either way, if she takes him back I doubt it’ll be any time soon. I’m thinking after their Friday kiss she “kisses” him off once again.

    Reply

    Elena replied

This is exactly what i think!!! I think they will say he acted on orders but was never gonna do it since they’ve had him say repeatedly that he wasnt going to go through with it…and then if they say that its fixed! He was never going to do it. And I agree with you that Julian was not abusive before….he’s always been sweet to her and they arent portraying him as anywhere near abusive right now.

    Marzy Dotes replied

Like most 180 overnight rewrites to destroy a popular character or couple, this one likely had an agenda attached. Usually you see this type of abrupt shift in writing after a HW and/or EP regime change and the priorities in story writing changes with a new showrunner or team coming in. A shame because the show’s just hanging on and needs everything that makes it more likely to remain on the air. Obviously a rewrite’s been done to try to undo the damage that happened earlier this year thorough in my opinion clearly poor decision making (esp given the dismal ratings performance over the summer months). . I think the work done by both actors has been amazing. Even destroyed as some people call it, this pairing and this story is what people are talking about in good and in some cases negative way. The “nicer” more “rootable” couples on the show are like watching paint dry as most don’t have story or just seem to be there to look pretty. Julexis seems to have much more emotional intensity and connection between the actors than the rest of the more “appropriate” pairings.

I try to like Alexis, but except for her lawyer skills and loyalty to friends and family, there is a part of her that is self destructive when it comes to her taste in men…except Jax and Ned. But she didn’t have kids with them. Her relationship with Julian has always been denial as to what he was about, and then she enabled him or looked the other way re: Duke and Carlos.

Right now I’m frustrated by her refusal to get help for her drinking problem…I don’t care if she looses her law credentials if what she does do is she passes out and almost sets the house on fire baking cookies with her grandson, or runs Julian, or it could have been anyone down, because she was drinking and driving. What’s next?

Then you have her close family and friends who don’t see what she’s doing, or at least smell the booze on her breath. Where’s Sam’s “detective” skills when it comes to her mother and her son almost being caught in an Alexis caused fire? And as much as I like Jax, he jumped ship to go home to be with Lady Jane. He could have at least let Alexis kids know. I know, this is a breach of his friendship with Alexis, but it’s also lives at risk because of her drinking problem.

Then there’s the “love” affair between Alexis and Julian. And his brand of helping her. How is he even close to being qualified to help her. He tried to kill her, and under the auspices of trying to help her is essentially blackmailing her. Then she ignored her principles by being with him…knowing down deep he was still probably a “bad” guy, Duke and Carlos. It was all well and good to show the attraction they had for each other, and in a perverse way may still have, but I find this a really unhealthy relationship…period! So between Julian, Ava and Jax knowing and saying nothing…somehow the family catching on…another almost accident caused by Alexis…and Alexis being an alcoholic with no control anymore…there will be some sort of reckoning and it won’t be pretty.

    Rebecca1 replied

I do agree, Rose, that it’s ridiculous and not believable that no one can detect alcohol on Alexis when they’re close. Perhaps she’s popping mints! Though, don’t they say there are some alcoholics and drug users who are able to hide their addiction? She’s not slurring her words, walking zigzag or falling down. Her ruddy face or sometimes teary eyes can be explained away because of her stress, depression, mental exhaustion: she’s always coherent when her kids confront her. They don’t know about the accident so….

Jax had to leave; his mom was in the hospital. Alexis swore she’d get help and I guess he thought he’d give her a chance to do so. Julian? We’ve yet to see if he’ll be the one to make her face herself.

I am disappointed in her though. You’d think her two close calls would be rock bottom; you’d also think light at the end of the tunnel in terms of getting her license back would brighten her spirit and outlook. But then again, depression and emotional trauma are deep…not a always an easy fix. From the outside looking in it’s easy to say what she SHOULD do…

Someone should at least contact Kevin or Andre. She really needs to express her angst rather than drown it…

    Rebecca1 replied

One more point, Mary. I also don’t think he’s abusing her by “forcing” her to look after him. I think he’s genuinely concerned about her drinking and this way he accomplishes two birds with one stone…keeping an eye on her and trying to get her help (as per her drinking) and hoping to win her back….

    Reply

    Mary SF replied

I think that is what the writers want us to think– but for me, until they can explain the knife to the throat — not rationalize it away — he was under stress, he was cornered– he snapped– those are all excuses abusive men use to explain their conduct, and then they are so sorry and so sweet trying to get the woman to forgive him, to question her own ideas of what is right and wrong– so she will take him back and boom he does it again.

I don’t think the writers are inferring Julian is abusive– but it so borderline— if the man truly loved her and was concerned about her drinking he wouldn’t enabled her by not revealing she hit him– by keeping the secret, using it to get her to spend time with him, so he can wormed his way back into her life- when she said she doesn’t want it there– that’s self centered and in by opinion, because he isn’t giving her a choice, it is an abuse of power over her– and love is about free will– so as I said, until they can redeem him, really redeem him from the past, I can’t get behind this as some great romance, overcoming a bump in the road– what is being shown now isn’t love– and I liked the couple– when he gave up his life in the mob for her, for me that was love– so until they can prove he was forced against his will to treat like he did— I’m out.

    nancy dillingham replied

Genuinely concerned”! Was he “genuinely concerned” about her welfare when he took the knife to kill her? I repeat: “Come on!”

    Rebecca1 replied

Again…it’s a soap. So, yes, I think he loved her, loves her still…and lost his mind. I think he’s doing her a favor by not turning her in…she’s about to get her law license back and an arrest now would destroy that. I didn’t see today’s episode yet but I hope he tells Sam instead and she can get Alexis help…discreetly. And yes, Mary, I do agree. I hope they come up with something convincing…or at least make us believe he would never have killed her. I choose to believe he never would have.

Yes indeedy, it surely is a “rocky” relationship–premeditated murder is apt to “rock” and couple–and it DID “rock” GH. Once again GH is doing what it does the “best”–taking a character way too far–then trying to redeem that character–doesn’t work–never has, never will. That’s precisely what has angered so many long-loyal fans–including me.

You see, that’s the thing. Alexis isn’t in her “right mind” while she is drinking alcohol, and this sucks because Alexis has this drinking problem now… because of whatever situations that she has been put through and into in her life… including with Julian… but Julian is also not the sole base of her problems. It goes into her familial history with The Cassadine’s and the death of Alexis’s mother and how that all went about way back when.

I went off on a bit of a tangent their for a second, but my point is here, that the more alcohol someone puts into their bodily system… the harder and the more harder it is and can become for these harmful substance-induced peoole / characters to make choices and decisions that are the best for them in their own lives. So, I wonder if Alexis would really be giving into Julian like this (like kissing him, etc.)… if she was not drinking and was sober.

    Reply

    Marzy Dotes replied

No way would she be kissing him if she weren’t drunk and there wasn’t this nostalgia going on. I think it’s a combo between the two. I think her history plays into what seems to be a driving factor more than fear for her which is betrayal. Looking forward to seeing it play out. I’ll take that over a story where a woman’s shot up with lizard blood or the latest attempt to “redeem” Franco. Or a bunch of 20 something couples with zero story, because those along with Carson, appear to be the designated pairings the show’s reluctant to damage. Lante gets the same baby rabies story. Naxie, can’t even remember what they’ve done the past several years. Witness how much care is being done with Carson. First Sonny of course didn’t plant the bomb and he’s a victim of his own attempts to put a hit on his enemy! Sonny didn’t really cheat on Carly this time. A woman drugged him. That’s fine and good but yawn…….. In contrast, Julexis gets trashed overnight in a “scorched earth” story that is a complete rewrite of both characters. Now at least they’re getting some intersting material and from what I have seen online at least seem to be the main talking point or buzz on the show right now.

I’m looking more forward to what plays out with Julexis than I am in watching any of the couples showcased in that stylish and costly ABC/GH winter romance promo that inexplicably left out three of the show’s main “money” pairings.

Christmas was all about plot points in terms of who spent it with who a sharp contrast to the holidays last year. None of Alexis’ kids spent it with her. Two spent it with Sonny. In part to ensure Julexis would be alone. In part to try to sell Carson as the core family in PC (even ensuring Ava wouldn’t attempt to spend time with Avery for Christmas). That was especially true with all these people inexplicably spending Christmas with Valentin. This Krissy is all about her father, unlike where in the past she struggled with his mobsterism and getting attention from him that was mostly focused on Michael and then Morgan. Sam night be more pushy but since she’s back with Jason, her identity will align more with Carson than her own family unfortunately. She’s barely involved in the Jason/Curtis investigation but hopefully that will improve and it’ll draw her into the Julexis story arc too. Nice to read that Lucas will be back on canvas soon. It’s strange (not really) that in November of last year Jelly were talking about three core families, being Corinthos as one, Julexis/Jeromes/DavisGirls as second and Ava/Kiki/Avery as the third. Two of those have been decimated. Not surprised but disappointied in the only survivor and that GH’s focusing too much on only one core family rather than more of them. I hope to see more Qs. Always love as many Cassadines as they can ship to town. Ava more as a mother to Avery b/c of course when Kiki finds out about what she did to Morgan, they’ll be estranged again. Looks like some Anna/Emma which is always good to watch and even Robin perhaps will drop by for a sighting.

Kristina wanted to spend the holiday with Alexis; she told her she was worried about her and didn’t want her to alone. It was Alexis who talked her into being with Sonny. We know why she wanted Kristina to go to Sonny’s…because she was planning on drinking. But her reason to Kristina made sense to Kristina and to the viewer; .Kristina and Sonny were mourning Morgan. Even if Alexis was doing well it would make sense for Kristinato be with her grieving father on their first Christmas without Morgan. As cor AM, she’s closer with Alexis than she’s ever been. She worries about her and defends her constantly. Her wrath toward Julian, her fierce protectiveness toward Alexis is very well conveyed. I see. O indication she’ll be more involved with Sonny and Carly than her own family.

As for little Avery, it drives me crazy that she’s always in Carly’s arms instead of Ava’s. I truly can’t stand Carly.

    LOL..auto spell. Kristina, not Kristinato.

    More corrections:

As for Sam, she’s closer with Alexis than she’s ever been.

I see NO indication she’ll be more involved with Sonny and Carly than her own family…

Incredible Totally agree with MF assessment. William’s performance was really beautiful. The words were desperately needed and Nancy’s portrayal was just heartbreaking. Alexis is so lost this whole year. Julian as well but I need to know what made him use the knife to her throat

They were really good. The scenes were totally raw on Friday. I’m anxious for their story to start again.

I’ll refer to Friday’s episode as the nightmare before Christmas.

Monica’s speech and all the kids on screen were highlights. The only other standout was Lulu’s takedown of Nina.

Otherwise, we had a new murder, fake memories of a dead character and finally the town’s former most intelligent woman boozing it up and kissing the man who almost slit her throat.

    Ah, happy holidays indeed.

    Take care, Nancy.

LOL…It’s GH! Michael is devoted to the man who killed his father, Carly married Sonny even though he threatened to kill her, Sam slept with her mother’s husband, Ava slept with her daughter’s boyfriend, Franco tried to kill his mother and buried her, Sonny tried to kill Jax but they hugged it out, Liz kept Jason’s identity a secret, Dr.0 kidnapped Robin, held Liz captive in her home…etc, etc. My point? Somehow they all make up and play nice. Or house. Viva la GH!

Speaking of Nina, wish they would get rid of that damn woman! Maybe Lulu was being a bit pushy with Charlotte, but Nina practically pulling her out of her mother’s arms was a bit much. I loved when Lulu reminded her of stealing a baby right out of the mother’s womb. She is so cloying and her orangatanian arms around Valentin. Ever notice how much she and Lucy are alike?

I don’t think so. I think once the truth of Julian’s 180 comes out, we’ll understand why he acted the way he did and they can begin the slow healing process.

Julian took advantage of a woman who he claims he loves while she is intoxicated! (Sorry writers- that makes me have less respect for him as a man!! ) Alexis is DRUNK! So when she wakes up & realizes what she just did…

Cont…Alexis has that restraining order still in place.. This whole thing is bad news. Someone who takes advantage of another while they are intoxicated is — NOT legally getting consent . Alexis could very well not remember ANY of this in the morning! Wake up and flip out! And Julian seriously?! If he is smart should not do anything more than just kiss her in her present state of mind.
However- do we not remember he was going to slit her throat?… Alexis has been drunk for how long?! This is what he did and how it affected her! And we think taking him back is a good idea! Alexis might as well just say goodbye to her career as a lawyer & remember what her kids names are because they will never see her again! #byebye

Alexis is just fine. NLG is sixth in episode count for this year instead of 20th and she’s a fave for best leading actress in the Emmys. Bring it. Julexis whether you like it or not is getting the majority of attention and buzz. NLG and WDV are totally rocking their scenes! Alexis is more than her kids, more than having herself up Sonny’s ass oir being a lawyer. I’m beyond excited to see what hse does next!

    nancy dillingham replied

    Yes, Guest! So agree!

    Marzy Dotes replied

Eh, Julian didn’t do that. He always respected Alexis’ boundaries sine his return to canvas in 2014. He NEVER abused a woman he loved. Not Cheryl back in 1988-90 and not Alexis in 2013- early 2016. Not until the riduculous rewrite that was done because Julian leaving the mob for his family made GH’s hero Sonny less sympathetic for staying in the mob. So Julian and thus Julexis had to be ruined to prop up St. Sonny as the hero of a low-rated GH. Far from ruined Alexis has got great material. NLG who plays Alexis is in the top six actors for episode count (instead of 20th) and she’s front runner for lead actress Emmy next year. Alexis will be just fine b/c guess what she’s got story beyond propping her relationship with Sam (which is how many Sam fans view her) and beyond propping St. Sonny. Can’t wait to see what Alexis and NLG do next!

I am a disgruntled viewer. I have not watched the show in months. I am so bored with the characters, the writing, the storylines, etc. The other day, I tried to put an episode on, as filler background, as I was bored and doing a few things around the house. I immediately stopped the episode(s)-I have no interest in the ridiculous stolen embryo of Lulu’s, her child with Valentin, Nina’s incessant, ongoing rant about wanting a child, Kiki-enough said (useless character), Carly and Sonny’s rehashed and rehearsed on-again/off-again “love” storyline, or boring/monotone Sam and Jason and having to endure the most boring pregnancy in the history of daytime. I’m just so disappointed with the entire show.

    Hi, dmr….missed your posts, babes.
Yeah, I’m with you. I just sort of caught up. What a mess…I barely skimmed through the episodes. Nothing there to see.
The little hints from Nelle with the stupid music box and the silver rattle….over and over, and over. Lordy, Lord; help me!!!! ( Evokes images of the Y&R music box, which was fraught with an inane storyline written for what??–naught).
I am still holding out a modicum of faith that Alexis will get her sanity back and stick her tongue out AT Julian ….and, not in his mouth!! Gross. The idea of kissing the man who held a knife to her throat makes me regurgitate bile.
Yes, of course “THEY” will try to patch it up with a less than plausible excuse for Julian’s actions, but, it will never be enough. I care not how many fans want these two back. There are a few of us who think it goes against all that is right in the world; soap or not. I would still hold reservations sleeping next to a guy such as he.
Nonetheless, even if there is an acceptable excuse, the fact remains that Julian is a bad guy. It took me a loooong while to get into Alexis….now that I am, I want her to get on the right path; regain her dignity, composure and dedicate a time to getting herself together before venturing into sny new relationship.
I forgive her drinking to a certain point. I do not understand why people get drunk or become alcoholics in the first place….but, it is a fact of life. I cannot judge what drives people….depression? Dejection? Hopelessness?
So, I do hope the writers do something about that…New Year’s resolution for Alexis?
Oh, yeah…do not get me started on Sam and Jason. She sort of overdoes it with the belly-rubbing. So obvious she’s never been pregnant. She spends 95% of the time she’s on air rubbing that fake mound.
I do not mind Kiki….I love Maura ( she is getting better and better looking with time….that skin!!). But, Sonny and Carly? No words…..
HAPPY NEW YEAR….dmr. The best to you; Shay, Timmm, Fanny, Jamesj75, Patrick, and anyone I forgot….and, last but Never least, Jimh.
Mr. Fairman and staff: Happy New Year and Thank You for your time and devotion.

It may be very possible for Kelly Monaco to be expecting her first child. Perhaps she is so overjoyed, she keeps hugging her belly. It would be great! Two actresses pregnant on GH, at the same time. Would it be a first?

And an extremely belated Happy New Year to you, as well, CeeCeeGirl! Hope you and yours enjoyed a most festive “Hogmanay” to usher in 2017!!!

    @Shay.
    Well, now…hey, there, Shaybelle,
How are you faring? Have you been watching GH? What say you about the turn of events? What do you think about TPTB’s ploy in maneuvering storyline after storyline to raise Julian to heaven?
Soon enough he will sprout wings and wear a halo. How celestial!! And, by the by? I think Brad’s family ( his mother?) planted the bomb that killed Morgan.
Now, something else. Did you notice the music played especially for Julian? Pitiful and funebral? Are we to pity him? I do not. Never will. Truly pathetic.
Noetheless, aside the feeling I harbored ( past tense, lol) towards Alexis, I think Nancy’s performance as a drepressed, betrayed, hurt , discombobulated drunk, hit the rafters and then some. I think her actinghas been unequaled, so far…..fantastic….worthy of an Emmy.
Oh, yes, thank you for asking, Shay…..We actually went a little nuts celebrating Hogmanay…past the wee hours of the morning. Thank God for Nanny.
We were ar St. Andrew’s, in Manhattan. Best of the best of Scottish food, for whatever that’s worth. Not too palatable for moi. LOL. The seafood is out of this world, though, Shay. My favorite!!!….’Tis the company that counts, non e’ vero?
    Later, my love.
