On Friday’s Christmas episode of General Hospital, it was the duo, Julexis, who have had a year of debauchery between them somehow manage to come together in a kiss on Christmas Eve (even though Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) was becoming quite schnokered in the process).
How did that moment come about? While camped out at Alexis’ house, Julian (William deVry) is questioned by her about the sketchy phone call he just received. Instead of answering her, he sidesteps the question. And that sends Alexis, who was prepping an icebag for Julian’s wounds, to use the ice to pour herself a stiff drink as her only way to deal with the situatiom, especially after Julian tells her there are some things she doesn’t know. As they become the “bickerstens”, Alexis is panicked by a knock at the door. She knows her kids would let her have it if they knew she was hiding Julian!
But lo and behold it turns out to be a delivery man with a Christmas tree in tow. An emotional Julian asks Alexis to decorate ithe tree with him and try and make a real Christmas out of this, and to somehow put aside all the stabbings, killings, attempted murders, and hit and runs between them!
As Alexis hears this and continues to drink, she flashes on a happier time when Julexis had their nuptials. She recalls how happy she was then and how she believed he was a changed man. Julian with tears in his eyes assures Alecxis that he deep down, loves her and always will. Alexis says “Cheers!” to that and boozes it up, yet again.
Julian, who didn’t miss a beat here, offers her an Xmas gift. When Alexis opens the present, an ornament with their wedding photo emblazed on it is the gift. A sorrowful Julian apologizes again for hurting Alexis so much.
He tells her, “You are my breath, you are my heartbeat. Alexis, you are my life.” Finally their eyes lock on each other. Alexis, albeit drunk, says she sees Julian she fell in love with through him and whispers, “There you are. I see you. I see you.” Cue the kiss!
First, let’s say that we could not have loved William deVry’s performance in this episode more. Emotional, tender, strong, contained, but so sad, he played all the right beats as Julian.. And as for Nancy Lee Grahn, what can you say that is not been said. Her portrayal of a woman with a battle with the bottle, and playing Alexis’ push-pull of her feelings for her man has continued to be riveting throughout this storyline.
