181 May 12th, 2015 GENERAL HOSPITAL: Duke Dies Leaving A Devastated Anna!

Courtesy/ABC

On Monday’s episode of General Hospital, even though fans learned via the media some weeks ago that it looked like Ian Buchanan was being written-off the ABC soap opera as Duke Lavery, yesterday all the reports were proven true.

After being shot in a struggle with a gun via Carlos Rivera (Jeffrey Vincent Parise), and having some final moments with his beloved Anna (Finola Hughes) while suffering gunshot wounds and waiting for the ambulance to arrive, things looked bleak for Duke and the once mighty super couple of GH!

After Duke is rushed to General Hospital, Patrick (Jason Thompson) tends urgently to Duke, and unfortunately he dies on the table as Patrick and the ER team drive to revive him.

Outside in the hospital waiting area Anna lays into Julian (William deVry), who happens to be at GH becomes of the birth of his son with Olivia (Lisa LoCicero).  Anna vows she will make him pay for ordering a hit on the love of her life.  Of course timing is everything in true soap opera and dramatic fashion!  Anna and Duke finally had come to their senses, realized they did not want to be apart, and planned to meet at midnight and leave Port Charles together to start a new life.  But that is always not a good sign, especially if you are part of the mob …  danger is always lurking.

Now Anna must try to recover from this devastating loss! Kudos to the performance of Finola Hughes, who brings her A- game every time and did not disappoint in scenes throughout the episode, as viewers watched Anna’s emotional rollercoaster of an evening, which ultimately resulted in losing Duke.

Watch the moment when Patrick informs Anna that Duke didn’t make it, after the jump! Then weigh-in! Are you upset that GH killed Duke? Do you think it will be interesting to see Anna’s story from here, especially if there is a romantic future down the line with Sloane (Grayson McCouch)? What did you think of the performances of Finola Hughes and Ian Buchanan?

Outstanding performance by Finola Hughes. My one tiny complaint is that, after asking at the beginning, she didn’t follow up again with a dying Duke on who it was that shot him. I know it’s a soap but I don’t find that believable given her character’s line of work.

Completely agree. Flawless acting and very touching….but it could have been even better if I hadn’t had to keep yelling “ask him who shot him!” at the tv lol.

there is more story to come..
For Duke to tell who shot him would end the story..
By not telling who shot him the Jeromes are in a whole lot of trouble lol

I do not believe in a soap death that any have named their killer LOL it kills the coming storie :)

I agree su0000. Yes one needs to sometimes suspend disbelief when watching soaps but like I said I just don’t find Anna not following up with Duke, the man she loves, on who shot him as he’s dying credible at all when that should be her first priority considering her line of work. It leaves the rest of the show for the reminiscing and goodbyes before he goes.

But the heck with what makes sense. We have a story to tell.

    rebecca1 replied

su…Anna’s going after Julian and it doesn’t matter if she knows it’s Carlos…he was acting on Julian’s order (even though it was Carlos who originally suggested it.)

    CeeCee replied

It becomes very obvious, very soon, that Carlos shot Duke, Mr. X.
What confounds me is why Carlos is so shaken? Wasn’t this his plan all along? ……shoot to kill Duke? I would have thought that he and Julian had thought of Carlos’s ‘get away car’, yes?
So, why does he go crying to Sabrina? He is supposedly a mobster……tough, his wits about him.
But, what we see before us is a mamby-pamby, pantywaist, who hides behind a girl’s skirts.

    CeeCee replied

    Mr. X…Hi.
Yes, finding out who shot Duke should have been Anna’s first priority because she is a Federal Agent. However, these are not the usual circumstances of a homicide.
This is not about Anna the agent; Anna the cop. This is about Anna, the woman, …..a woman overwrought with pain. Her main focus is to keep him talking, lucid, awake and ALIVE!!
This is an emotional Anna….whomever the culprit is, becomes secondary, at this point.
After all is said and done, we see that a contained anger now propels her to seek revenge…the target, Jake.
In my opinion, Anna acted exactly as a grieving woman who has just lost the love of her life should act. She is human, afterall, yes?…..peace out.

    Fanny replied

I agree CeeCee, Enough with Carlos crying after the fact. Has he ever heard
of the expression “Walk like a Man”. The two worse hit men in MOB history
Carlos and Shawn. They never met JASON, he could have taught them a
    thing or two…..

    Shay replied

@CeeCee (and Fanny….) You are so right about the hirsute hitman-child, Carrrr-LOS! I’ve never understood the ongoing purpose of this trigger-happy mad dog….he is the exact opposite of a cool-headed, hired gun, like say, Jason Morgan! The scenario with him never changes….first he gets on his manic, bloodthirsty high when he gets a shot off at someone…..successfully or not….then he runs away with his tail between his legs and starts with the woe is me routine on Sappy. Of course, she is reliably lame enough to fall for it every time! I’ve also grown weary of her getting one (more like two, three…) over the law enforcement crowd with her phony innocent act. She has been complicit in practically all of Carrrr-LOS! misdeeds, and yet she always gets off scot-free. Today’s poorly-acted farce was the worst….how can the smart-as-a-whip Anna fall for this ridiculous “hostage” ploy…again and again? Also, what’s with this sanctimonious miss and her holier-than-thou attitude???? Let’s see, she has been a gangsta gal-pal, an unwed babymama and a crazed chick on an infanticide kick, yet she’s still being painted as this giddy, gushing and blushing demure thing….sorry, but the bloom fell off this rose long ago….the “Sapster” is sloppy seconds at least twice over, so let’s dispense once and for all with the “pretty in pink” Disney princess fantasy and call this (social climbing wannabee) spade a spade!

    CeeCee replied

    @Shay.
Oh, yeah, Shea…it is so comforting knowing there are so many women on this soap who never learn their lesson.
How many times has Sabrina walked this road? Carlito shows up at her door looking visibly distraught and undone, but she lets him in? I like Sabrina, but I do question her sense of wisdom. Yeah, yeah, she has a history with him….a part of her still loves him, …..well, that’s exactly my point. I must laugh about that hacked tape-her-to-the-chair deal. What was up with that? And, you’re right. How many times will Anna fall for that?
In Carlos defense, though. I guess he did it to dispel any suspicion from Sabrina.

The same can be said about Alexis. Well, far worse, considering the woman has been around the block a few times….no babe in the woods, she. Alexis can twist her reasoning this way and that. I will not bite. She knew exactly what the deal was when she decided to go back to Julian.
And, he threw that fact in her face. She innocently said she thought he would stop? I am paraphrasing here…I’m too lazy to go back and check the DVR….LOL.
Really? She’s that naive? A sagacious attorney who battles/defends criminals in murder cases in courtrooms?
Has she ever read Machiavelli’s IL PRINCIPE? It is a must among law students. Oh, golly gee…I forgot, Alexis is a character in a soap who plays an attorney.
The writers have a knack of making even the most , supposedly, intelligent characters look like idiots.
A few episodes ago, Sam was describing her mother’s character/makeup as highly moralistic. Ha! I will stop there, Shay….is that why she slept with Julian still warm from Ned’s sheets/body within hours?
Not a very prudent, moral woman.
I can forgive Sabrina…she’s not that experienced in ‘the ways of men’.

    Harry replied

Cee Cee: I don’t have the words to describe my feelings about The Little Mermaid –she is as pointless as a fish out of water. Excuse the mixed metaphors.
But you bring up Alexis. My problem with Alexis goes well beyond the confines of her Miracle Bra. My problem with Alexis is her rinse and repeat cycle of bad boys. She is a Yale School Law graduate–she’s a wickedly smart woman who makes the same mistake time and time again. Twenty years ago, buttoned-up-Oxford-blouse-wearing Alexis loosens up and discovers the joy of sex with Sonny the mobster. We learn that Alexis does have a healthy sex drive and is not frigid. Rinse and repeat with the following bad boys–Jerry Jax, Sean, Ric Lansing, and now Julian. We get it–Alexis is more than the buttoned up attorney, she likes bad boys and she likes to have sex with them. Where’s the character development? Where’s the wisdom of having lived on this earth for more than fifty years? What some perceive as my being ageist (as if!) is really my being frustrated that you have this intelligent woman acting stupid time and time again and never ever learning from her mistakes.

    rebecca1 replied

Harry…I hate to be THE VOICE OF REASON, ahem…but apparently you and company have singled Alexis out as the “mature” woman who should know better than to date a mobster. Huh. So what about:

The under 40: Sam, Elizabeth, Sabrina, Lulu, Maxie, Emily

The over 40: Diane, Carly, Jordan, Tracy, Skye, Olivia, Connie

Some repeat offenders…I’m talking about the women, not the gangstas…

My point? Stop pickin’ on Alexis. She hasn’t done anything that anyone else on that show hasn’t done.

    (I got your back, Nancy/Alexis!) ;)

    Harry replied

Rebecca, I pick on Alexis because she’s the brightest student in the class who continues to disappoint me with her stupidity.
Sam cannot disappoint me because I never thought she was that bright anyway.
Anna is an example of a beautiful, strong and intelligent woman who continues to evolve.

    rebecca1 replied

Harry…yes, Alexis is brilliant…intelligent and quick-witted. With that said, so is Diane, who dates Max (though she’s barely on these days), Anna, who through it all loved Duke, Tracy…c’mon…the woman is intelligent, Jordan…the list, as I mentioned, is long. They’re all involved with guys in the mob…either in the past or present…possibly future. Alexis is no different. The ONLY difference is she breaks up with them because of her moral dilemma…then convinces herself that they’ll change their life for her. Just as Sabrina believed Carlos, Anna HOPED Duke would, etc.

  2. aria says:

oh my god Mr. Fairman, wasn’t Finola Hughes just riveting in those scenes? i’m so disappointed the show chose to go this route again, i know characters have to die, its part of life especially if your in the mob,but still, i don’t know, i was against this, but hey if McDreamy can die on Grey’s Anatomy, then as they say everyone on any show is fair game. I think this show need to implement a no die policy, because then it really becomes silly when characters are brought back from the dead, and just consider this show alone record with characters that are brought back from the dead. RC and FV must be trying to create a new record of bringing characters back from the dead only to kill them off again( AJ, and now Duke) but beyond my disappointment with the killing of certain characters, I was riveted with Finola Hughes performance, and i loved it when she laid it on to Julian, whose really taken a turn and become a weasel , i’m not one of those fans of alexis and julian together, for the life of me i can’t figure out why they are consider a super couple, he is unredeemable to me, Alexis deserves better. I hope Anna gets him good.

I hate Julian with the heat of a thousand suns.

    CeeCee replied

Hail to Harry! Do you hate Sonny just as much? He killed AJ for no good reason.
As much as I feel Anna’s heartache…..lest we forget, Jordan would be dead in his stead by Duke’s henchman, had it not been for her sharp intuition, alertness, and smarts.
What I do not understand, is why she is lying about the Bruce. What did I miss?

    rebecca1 replied

Oh, Harry…now we’ve lost AJ AND Duke! Soon we’ll be watching GH aka 90210!

I’m beside myself! And I’ve got to blame someone, so I’m blaming you. Had you not disrespected our beloved Duke…had you not mocked his mob prowess and dubded him The Macy’s Don…hahahha…or something like that…he might still be with us today!

I think the writers took your critique to heart and sent him packing. The blame likes squarely on your shoulders. Now fix it!!!!

    Shay replied

‘Tis true, Harry…..Finola Hughes was heartbreakingly touching in her anguished farewell to her fallen love….it was one of her finest performances to date. I also adored “Anna’s” scene with Dr. O. in the aftermath of Duke’s death…despite the obvious tension and enmity between these two formidable foes, there was a brief moment of humanity there…well-played by both of these accomplished actresses!

    Harry replied

Rebecca, I always saw the poetry in Duke. (would love to know what Ian uses on his skin because it’s beautiful). I think you did too. Yes, I called him Duke of Bloomingdales when the writing afforded to him was pointless and non sensical. It could have been beautiful for he and Anna but instead you have Duke choosing Sonny over the great love of his life, Anna. But honestly, I loved Duke and I am sorry I mad fun of his fashion prowess.
Which brings me to Sonny. Yes, Cee Cee, I do hate Sonny for so much. I have hated Sonny since he manipulated young Karen into stripping for his club while plying her with drugs. All women, young and old, should see the horns on his head and run away screaming. Instead, you get women like Carly, and that simpering fool Lily (glad she’s dead! glad, I tell ya!) and a whole litany of other women seeing a halo above his pointy head and they tell him he’s so misunderstood, mis treated and that he’s wonderful father. Rebecca, Shay and Cee Cee–we often disagree about certain characters but I think the four of us can agree that Sonny is the Devil and unlike Mick Jagger, I have no sympathy for the Devil.
In that case, Sonny is the great unifier of GH viewers.

    rebecca1 replied

LOL, Harry. Dapper Duke did have a flair for fashion…the Dapper Don if you will. I absolve you from causing his demise…

And yes! You should know from reading my posts I love Duke! I was incredibly happy when he returned to the show…and then consistently wondering what the freak they were doing with him…he either was absent, playing with Emma, dealing with relish or FINALLY involved in a story which then had him killed. As for the great romance between him and Anna? They did nothing! There was not a couple moment that was memorable…if they even had one.

Great way to put it, seeing “the poetry in Duke.”

As for his skin…flawless! As well as his teeth, and expressive eyes. Those videos of his younger days…his smile charmed an era….

    Shay replied

@Harry…..You need never apologize for stating the obvious about the sartorially splendid Mr. Lavery! I always found your humorous send-up of “Duke of Bloomingdale’s” to be the ultimate compliment, not just to the character, but IB’s great sense of style, as well. It was so obviously done with love! I also enjoyed this fashionable gentleman…there are so few found today…my gripe was not unlike yours….that Duke had no pride of place on the GH canvas, and it got to the point of being undignified. Not the fault of either Mr. Lavery or Mr. Buchanan, but the showrunners….for shame, for shame! However, I was at least gratified that Maxie paid homage to this late, lamented man’s inimitable flair for fashion finery. (As those tear jerking flashbacks attested….my oh my, what a dashing figure Duke cut back in the day, and his wedding with Anna was utterly breathtaking!) At any rate, I also admired the ladies’ parade of LBD’s at the memorial…they hit just the right style note: Sam- smashing, Maxie- magnificent, Carly-quite chic! Even Lucy managed to look suitably subdued, albeit with a bit of her trademark sparkle.

I don’t really care if Sloane stays on not….but, he did improve a bit. He is not someone upon whom I put too much importance except to clean PC of infectious vermin…..and, bring Jake to the fore as Jason.
As yourself, I love Hayden….what a performer. I am very partial to her. She is the proverbial femme fatale and knows how to play one…she knows how to shake that ‘thaaang’, for sure.
I think Rebecca is here to stay…at least, I hope so, albeit she deserves a kick in the pantalettes, and then some for her part in the Jake Barnes deception/debacle.

    CeeCee replied

    Hi, tash.
When Grayson took his predecessor’s position as Sloane, The Commish, I felt the same way. I thought he was grubby and repulsive looking. The other guy was so hot.
I was not fair …LOL. But, in my defense, I’m a girl, I appreciate beautiful people. It’s the same as admiring ‘un objet d’art’.
However, this Sloane did clean up….he looks much more professional, and he is doing an excellent job. I did a complete turnabout….he won me over. I understand why, when he first joined the cast, ATWT fans spoke highly of Grayson playing Dusty.
I also think that the takeover of the Commissioner position was necessary because Anna was not delivering as a leader….as some posters agreed many , many, many ‘comments’ ago. Sloane is a subordinate of the state-law’s hierarchy. Sloane’s orders are to weed out the baddies of PC……namely, Julian Jerome and Company. My question is? Why not Sonny? Why not Duke? As far as I am concerned, they do share the same umbrella….well, Duke, no longer.
I do not feel Duke’s loss because I do not know him, but I do appreciate those who have been avid, and dedicated fans for decades….especially due to his ties with Anna.
Nonetheless, I do see ‘something’ brewing between Anna and Sloane. I wouldn’t mind that….we shall see.

Yes, Grayson went from a 5 to a 7ish but I just dont think he is a good actor. I see what your saying about Duke. If you didnt initially watch him back in the 80′s and see how him and Anna’s relationship developed you wouldnt feel as close this time because he was really back burnered this time around. In the 80′s it was all about Robert and Anna and when Duke stepped in you were like, who is this guy? He was handsome and romantic so you kept watching and he was written really well in main storylines so he caught on like fire! I will miss him. CeeCee, you will probably feel the same way when Nathan West dies when he is struck in the head by a thesaurus and dies from blunt force trauma!!!

  5. AJQ says:

The unfortunate part in all of this is that there is absolutely no reason for Duke to actually die. Getting shot, clinging to life could have yielded all the same emotion and performances. If it is to watch the aftermath, Duke in a coma, paralyzed etc could have sent the same possible events in motion.

But the real fact is that you didn’t need Duke to get shot and die two years after Julian’s return for there to be conflict and a vendetta. Julian certainly did enough to Anna and Duke in the past and his return should have been a story about Duke and Anna.

But they brought Julian back to give him Alexis as a baby mama, a daughter in Sam, a grandson in Danny, brought on Ava and threw him into the ridiculous Fluke story.
To now say that they killed Duke to create drama, conflict, a vendetta; shows a complete lack of understanding of GH history and characters or a blatant attempt to ignore it.

This is a complete and utter failure and there is no good or valid reason for it. Yet another character important to the history and legacy of GH ruined and gone.

Do TPTB, RC and FV, really think that GH fans want to see Julian Jerome win in the end? Duke dies on his orders. He loses his life, Anna loses him, everyone close to him suffers a loss and at the same time we see Julian witness the birth of another son and his legacy and power grows.

What am I really supposed to think about a regime who is entrusted with a 50 yr old show, its continuing legacy, the fans who have supported it for decades, and show a blatant disregard for all of it. So why kill another character so tied to the glory days of GH, when the show was a powerhouse? Is it to try and wipe from people’s memory the greatness that was so that the current incarnation might be more palatable? It isn’t working.

I love Alexis, but this doesn’t make her look good either, her record is awful, sonny, ric, julian, jerry, this doesn’t make her look bright whatsoever. how is this going to play out? really? the show runner/ and head writer clearly favor the Julian character here, how is he supposed to be redeem? I don’t know what the real behind the scenes story is, if Ian Buchanan wanted off the show, or this was a budget decision, or what, but killing off an iconic legendary character like Duke Lavery is a big mistake, in my opinion. They get rid of him, but useless characters like Carlos are still hanging around town. It makes no sense. It’s a waste of a great actor and a great character.

I’m hoping that Duke ends up in the magic freezer like Jason, Helena, and so many others, so they can bring him back at some point, lol.

    Shay replied

@Rose….Well, yes, Hayden does have Nik’s “needs” covered…essentially she is earning her room and board on her back…or whatever other position is required….LOL. Quite the vulgar little trollop, isn’t she???? (I truly desire an appalled Helena back so as to refer to her as a “guttersnipe” and “unrefined type,” as only the Cassadine matriarch can do….) But having said that, I truly abhor this newbie tramp having the upper hand over Prince Nicky…….he’s between a rock and a hard place—no pun intended!—yet I suppose it serves him right for having banished Britt from Port Charles. Brazen Hayden makes Dr. Westbourne look like an absolute saint by comparison! As for Nik’s “mama drama,” issues, maybe Laura will address them on her next swing through the GH canvas. And finally, “Val?” I’m just tired of her licking those chops of hers every time Dante is in close proximity….so very unseemly!

    Shay replied

Very well-encapsulated synopsis there, AJQ! So little of what happens these days in Port Charles makes any sense. The wrong characters seem to be given star status while the true gems get short shrift, if not complete elimination from the canvas. God help us if what we are left with are the antics of Nina, Sappy, Val-Chops, Hayden and Jordan….ugh!

At least one of the wenches has Nik’s libido number. And that can be a recipe for lots of drama that su0000 will like. It’s not just Spenser that needs a mother. I think Nik missed out in that department, too. Valerie…I just don’t have a read on what they are going to do with her. Just hope it isn’t with Dante.

Val, Valerie,Val-chops as Shay likes to call her, has no significant

I’m not pleased at all that GH killed off Duke!!! I felt the same about AJ. Yet, on GH, characters seem to find their ways back to the canvas. As that’s the case…bring back Alan Quartermaine!!!

And…bring back Tristan Rogers aka Robert Scorpio after his contract expires from Y&R. This new Sloane doesn’t fit romantically with Anna, I preferred Robb Derringer in the role. Let’s see some adventure with Robert and Anna, and I hope Mac and Felicia and Doc aka Kevin make appearances for Duke’s funeral. Shame Robin can’t come back for that.

Or even Robin, except Anna doesn’t know she saved Jason.

More on the resurrection possibility after today. Notice how Dr. O has been so “involved” in the Duke story at the hospital. First with Anna, then instructions to Elizabeth about his body. She seemed so accommodating for “O.” This is the same Olbrecht who was at the clinic in Switzerland where Duke was held prisoner for years, and the Duke mask was made for Faison. And Robin was held. I think I’ve got it right. Jump in JimL where I might be off. Then there’s the Olbrecht history with the Cassadines who always seem to have a trick or two, and the money, to fund experimental re-births.

This may seem like I’m getting carried away. But we’ve gotten used to seeing the fantastical on GH.

Anyway a lot of coincidences that could make for a future Duke, now being held in stasis and brought back to life. Just hope it’s Ian.

What burns me up the most about Duke’s death right now is the GLARING absence of Robin and Robert. “I’m so alone” Anna says, while OBRECHT strokes her hair. OBRECHT! What an insult to those of us who have more than a short-term memory! SHE and Faison are the ones who kept Duke from his family for 20 years! And here she is comforting Anna?! This is an outrage!! And please, don’t tell me SLOANE is gonna walk in next .. the man who should be walking in that door right now is Robert Scorpio! RC and FV REALLY blew it, thinking they didn’t need to give Tristan Rogers a contract, that he would just be available whenever they wanted him .. and now we’re stuck with contract Obrecht and Sloane!? I understand your anger, Maddie. But, this is the crux of the matter. I believe there is a lesson to be learned here. That is, the most despicable ‘scum’ can be redeemed.
Dr. O insinuated herself into some of our hearts. I do believe that TPTB noticed Gati’s popularity and they are banking on it. ‘They’ are redeeming her, as we speak. I really do not see the difference between her, Fsison and all the mobsters in PC. They are all CRIMINALS. Some more despicable than others, but, criminals nonetheless.
Will Anna accept that comfort, or will she lash out? Anna is noble of heart….she may…..any human connection is better than none….even from Liesl.
I do agree that someone, other than the most unlikely person, Anna’s first and foremost, persona non grata , as Liesl, was the one to dry her tears (figuratively), and offer comfort.
Furthermore, it is shameful and sad for Anna not to have a loved-one, such as her daughter to be with her, in her time of need….the writing could have catered to Anna anguish with much more sensitivity.

    Reply

    maddiehayes replied

@CeeCee, nobody loves redemption stories more than I do! One of my favorites was Sean Donely, a baddy if we ever saw one! But, lurking beneath it, we could see he had affection for Robert, Anna & Felicia, and grudging admiration for Frisco. When Frisco’s life was on the line, Sean took a bullet for him, which cemented a close friendship between the two of them. From there, Sean became a trusted friend and partner (even if he did slip outside the law now and then, lol) It was a gradual and WELL-WRITTEN process that did not rely on Sean being given a bunch of newbies as “insta-family” to make him more loveable. Obrecht’s redemption has been FORCED DOWN OUR THROATS from the get-go. Yes, she has a nice voice, but I’d really rather see some of that attention she’s getting go to Monica or Tracy, women her age who have HISTORY on the show! And I don’t see the difference between Dr. O, Faison and “all the mobsters” either. You are right, they ARE criminals, and I don’t root for any of them. I like Jake, because he isn’t really a mobster, he’s “undercover”. When he is revealed as Jason, I hope he doesn’t go back to his life of crime. I’d like to see him discover his “Q” side. I repeat, I don’t root for the criminals, I root for the good guys! Anna, Robin, Patrick & Emma! Mac, Felicia, Nathan, Maxie! They’re the ones who should be comforting Anna right now.

You are right, she was forced on us. I don’t mind, though. As a newbie, I do not have the memories of the characters that ‘lived’ in PC for so long where they formed a bond with so many fans. So, it is understandable you feel what you fee…and, you have expressed those feelings from the heart.
Never, for a minute, do I forget Liesl’s criminal past.

Thanks CeeCee .. those of us who’ve been watching a long time do get attached to our characters, lol. Yesterday’s flashbacks of Anna&Duke .. that got me. Because there was more attention paid to character development in the old days .. have you ever watched any of the old scenes on youtube? Check out the Asian Quarter storyline sometime (the one with Sean’s redemption), one of GH’s best.

    Shay replied

@maddiehayes….Most often we are on the same page when it comes to our fond memories of Port Charles’ past—not to mention the pros and cons of the modern state of GH—but for the once, we do part company on our views of Dr. O. While I’m usually wont to calling out the current show runners for cramming their pet characters down our throats, I have to say that the introduction of Liesl Obrecht—and her eventual metamorphosis into the relatively less-wild-woman we see today—was actually a textbook case of how to work a new role into the existing fabric of a soap. When we initially met this mysterious villainess, she was a bit player whose menacing medica was running a criminals’ bolthole in the guise of a clinic…normally, such a small stint would have barely registered a blip on the radar, had Kathleen’s Gati’s brilliantly brusque portrayal not caught the fancy of the viewers, or perhaps even more importantly, Anthony Geary, who was greatly impressed by the immense talent demonstrated by this versatile actress. Accordingly, this fiercely freaky femme continued to occasionally turn up and make her mark with one brief appearance after another, always to the rave reviews of many of us who beseeched the GH honchos to give us more Obrecht! (And for once, they listened to our feedback!) Hence, we soon discovered to our giddy delight that this “Dark Lady” was in reality a Faison groupie who bore his lovechild and the “Mutter” of the equally mesmerizing Dr. Britt Westbourne…what subsequently followed, as they say, is now a part of this soap’s history! Therefore, while I am the first to admit that this polarizing pariah is not everyone’s cup of tea, KG does have a considerable fan base which is thrilled with her continued presence on the GH canvas, and I do not find her character’s too infrequent glimpses to be disproportionate to other cast members in the same manner as say, Sappy, Ava, Nina or now Hayden, who were well and truly force-fed to the audience….with extremely mixed reactions, no less! Having said that, I certainly can respect that not all of us—including yourself—are as enamored with Dr. O. as I admittedly am, but to characterize her inclusion to the show as being one in the long list of gross impositions upon the viewers is a rather unfair and inaccurate one, at least from my perspective!!! The Liesl we know today arrived here in carefully measured increments! (On the other hand, I totally hear you regarding the characters and storylines of yesteryear….those Anna and Duke flashbacks demonstrated just how much heart and soul are lacking in the present-day episodes. No wonder then that the use of these emotional montages are so few-and-far between….the comparisons of then and now leave the modern-day efforts in the dust! Oh, as for Robert Scorpio?….Bring him back to Port Charles from that vast “Wisconsin” wasteland where his charm and charisma are being seriously squandered!)

Beautiful post, Shay! We need you writing for Soap Digest. :) Anyway, I do enjoy Obrecht at times, she is comic relief, and a foil for other characters. At least I’m still watching! One old-time fan I know quit watching the minute Dr. O became chief of staff at the hospital. She just couldn’t take it anymore! The “pimping” of Dr. O and the shelving of Monica. But I do understand, the writers have to do what’s good for the show. And if there are a lot of viewers who love Obrecht (I differentiate between Obrecht and Ms. Gati. She IS a major talent, and GH is lucky to have her), putting her front-and-center should be good for ratings. Now then, as to the flashbacks, I couldn’t agree more .. those old scenes were the highlight of that episode for me! Today’s GH just can’t compare to ’80s GH when it comes to making us really care about the characters. Today’s GH is more fast-paced, never-a-dull-moment, but I’m not “feeling” it. When Duke “died” the first time, I couldn’t help crying when they showed Anna, weeping in Duke’s club, remembering her tango with Duke as “the Wind Beneath My Wings” played. This time, how does Anna deal with her grief? She goes out and shoots Duke’s killer, in cold blood. Yes, it is entertaining, but I couldn’t help but feel more for Carlos at that moment than I did for Anna. She REALLY needs Robert right now, on that we agree!

I suppose, Rose. But, realistically, there is no glamor or class within the underworld….live by the sword; die by the sword.
It does make sense to all of Mr. Buchanan’s fans that they wanted to see more done for the Duke character, dead or alive. I am of the persuasion that the writers are exemplifying the ignobility and waste of living as a criminal and thus, dying as one….I hate to be crass, but some people would consider Duke’s death as just desserts, yes? Personally, I would rather have him stay if only to have Sonny leave. My opinion.
What the writers should have done was to write the character in as ‘on the straight and narrow’, and keep his relationship with Anna undisturbed.

    Harry replied

It was well acted, but certainly not well written. Since Duke’s return from the dead, they have thrown more crap at this actor than an irate chimp does at the heckling zoo patrons. Duke keeps himself alive while being held in captivity under sadistic like conditions by envisioning the love of his life–Anna.
He is reunited with the real life woman behind the life sustaining mirage and suddenly Duke develops a boy crush on Sonny choosing the mumbling mobster over the greatest love he has ever known.

    Shay replied

What an absolutely apt description of the indignities thrust upon Duke by the GH showrunners, Harry! Ever since Mr. Lavery re-emerged in Port Charles, he has been given precious little to do…he was consistently a man without a purpose, and that was so sad to witness. With his genteel bearing and vast life experience, there should have been something more positive to define Duke’s existence than playing mob boss in Sonny’s slimy shadow. Given this prime example of the squandering of yet another beloved legacy character, I have no recourse but to term Mr. Lavery’s sad exit a “mercy killing.”

    Haley replied

well said. I think Finola and Ian could make a great love story to continue Duke and Anna with a creative writer at the helm. Geez, the suspense…. I’ve been waiting for them to get back to it. What a disappointment. I’ll have to be satisfied with their earlier days.

for stripping twenty yrs of his life, his love, losing his only child, Julian
needed to be held accountable, the hate was mutual though, and it would
only be a matter of time before one or the other ended up dead.
Sonny simply facilitated matters when he offered Duke a job, which Duke
needed to feel like himself again. A proud, independent man who could
take care of his own. He didn’t choose Sonny over Anna his one true
    Love, obsessive revenge chose him.

su…as you know soaps are continuing stories. It’s not like you lose a character and go on to the next episode…these are “people” we come to love…feel for…the reason we watch…so it’s not about his “great moment.” He’s gone from the show! That means something to fans who felt something for this character and wanted to see more of him…not less. It’s a loss…as far as missing him on the show…as those of us who miss AJ. Every few weeks it seems there’s another major player leaving…if you don’t why that upsets viewers than I’m not sure what you get out of soaps.

I know you love GH. And you keep reminding people it’s a TV show… a soap. We know that. But the whole point in any show, film, book…is suspending your disbelief. So while we’re “immersed” in the show…while we’re believing…for that one hour (minus commercials…;) ) we are INVOLVED and pseudo connected to these characters. Of course it creates a reaction…one of disappointment and loss. What’s the point, finally, of watching a soap if no one’s left. Then, it’s just a show. Might be good…but it’s not the show you’re invested in…

being ‘let go’ is different, usually a decision to let the character be shelved for corporate reasons..

Soap actors always have the possibility of being let go at any time..
(his number was up, his time came)
I'm sure we will be reading an Ian interview , soon..

Ian was very busy with his pother projects, his Broadway shows etc
perhaps his schedule was hard to work around, hard to give him a story, and IF he was let go that could be a factor with ABC's decision to let him go..

Anyways- Ian will be fine he is very busy on Broadway..

Ian Buchanan as Duke was for the most part a beloved character to many of us. We will miss him…Duke…as part of the canvas. It doesn’t matter if I meet him in person, see him on Broadway or share a coffee!!!! I will still miss “Duke!”

As for fired or let go, it’s semantics. The point is it wasn’t his choice and he probably would have preferred to stay. And lest you come back at me…no…I don’t know for sure if he’d prefer to have stayed…I just think he might have….

Suu, I have never seen anyone post so many responses in one article trying to “prove” that the fans of a beloved character are wrong. It would seem that your employers are really shocked by the fan outcry about the loss of Ian Buchanan, thus you are responding with what appears to be a corporate line to so many posts non-stop to quell the firestorm. You claim we don’t know what we are saying when we say Ian was fired, which was reported by Michael Logan of TV Guide, a HIGHLY reputable source. Yet you, with no proof, keep insisting that Ian is very busy on Broadway, blah, blah, blah. Let us grieve the loss of a legendary character and the superb actor who played him. No matter how many times you post the corporate line about this, fans will continue to lament the death of Duke and the loss of Ian Buchanan. Duke was a legendary character who should have just been “retired” until such time as GH gets a writer who cares to really write for him, and for the FANS who followed Duke and Anna and the memories they created for almost 30 years! Please respect the fans’ right to grieve this character loss without so many many responses from you that try to diminish our feelings.

  13. Jimmy says:

Finola Hughes is a true gem, and her scenes were pure gold. She is one of GH’s best actresses who consistently performs amazingly. That being said, Duke did NOT need to die. I don’t understand why TPTB feel the need to kill off characters that fans like in order to propel story. They did that with both A.J. and Connie in 2014, and now they’re doing it again with Duke. Three huge errors made by the show in one year.

Duke is a legacy character that is important to the history of GH. For story purposes, they could have put Duke in a coma, or faked his death, or written him into Witness Protection, so they could bring him back down the line (like they did with Ric). They have already done a resurrection story with the character, so I doubt we’ll be seeing that again down the line.

This is also a blow for GH because they’re losing Ian Buchanan. He and FH are pure gold together, and after months of keeping Anna and Duke in limbo, they finally came to their senses and put them back together, only to rip it away 5 minutes later. This was a very poor decision made by the show, regardless of whatever story spins out of it. The only bright spot will be seeing the acting talents of Finola and anyone else involved in the story.

But, I don’t even believe my own reasoning…Lol. …just doesn’t make sense.
The only thing that does make sense is that the writers brought the two back together in preparation for Duke’s death. Anna’s mourning makes it real.
Was his death staged, unbeknownst to Anna?We did see him at Sonny’s doorstep in the preview, right?
So, Timmm….you’re not far off the mark.

Sad to see Duke die. Awesome work by Finola Hughes as Anna. She never disappoints. Never! But this is GENERAL HOSPITAL,a hospital, where people live and die every day. And GH for a couple decades now has been dark, thanks to that long dark mob shadow. Death is difficult, and Anna has been through a lot in her life. It will be good to see her deal with this loss, an opportunity rich in story. While the mob games wear on me, I am happy to some degree this is a death. And no bizarre frozen bodies or missing corpses or switched identities are in play. That nonsense really wears on me. Those tropes no longer holds surprise or wonder. There was (the few times they were seen on screen together) stolen, longing glances…there were references to each other…there was Anna’s obvious conflict with wanting to uphold the law and Duke needing to assert himself in a power position again. And, like in real life, people do succumb to love which is what I felt they did after a long enough separation. In that sense, I found it plausible that they’d give up their respective “jobs” for each other…they’d been apart long enough.

As for Tristan/Robert…I adore him! I’d welcome his return. But Anna had chosen Duke over him long ago…though they do make a great couple. Who knows what the future holds. RIght now I’m missin’ Duke and what could’ve been….

    Absolutely true, Substitute.
Anna, a stickler for doing the right thing, decides, at the eleventh hour…..nilly-willy, to take off to God-knows-where, with Duke. I think what the writers are hoping for is that we just assume that Anna was repressing the love and passion she still had for Duke. In an act of weakness, Anna succumbed to those feelings….the joy of being with her love forevermore, blinded every fiber of her being…any good sense she had….
…Better than being alone….act of desperation and desolation.

I absolutely hate it that Duke was killed. When I saw Obrecht showed up today and told Anna she had to leave Duke’s body so his body could be removed that maybe they were going to save him like they did the Casadines. Wishful thinking I guess. I don’t understand why if they needed to kill a character, why they didn’t kill Luke since Tony Geary is retiring anyway. Anna and Duke are a great couple and they each are good alone.

The acting was stupendous…Finola was completely believable as a woman devastated; Ian did his best acting since they brought him back. Quiet, teary-eyed, a man clinging to life as his love holds him in her arms…his sadness, love, regret, fear all displayed in his expressive face…

Hated it! The fact that they keep puttig on the back burner or killing off these legacy characters is infuriating and takes away from the “relationship” with GH and the lives we’ve come to know. Perhaps not to newer viewers; people die, get killed off all the time on TV and film. But when you watch a continuing saga for so long…and there are characters you’ve come to know, love and look forward to seeing…it’s a loss.

Perhaps his death will propel story. That could have been done by crippling him, putting him in a coma, him escaping and presumed dead (even to Anna for her own safety)…but to make it so final…

Yes, people come back on GH. But unless he was an imposer this entire time; it’d be absurd. The only way I see an out is if we don’t see Duke again after Anna is crying over his body. If somehow he’s whisked out another door to some foreign hospital…and a closed casket funeral. (Haven’t seen today’s show yet…perhaps that’s not doable…)

Other than that, he’s dead. Dead/dead. Just wonder if it was Ian’s choice to leave…and to leave permanently…or if it was just an insane, completely screwed up design by the writers. Do they REALLY not care what the fans think? Did they now read how pissed people were when they killed of AJ? Why kill another beloved character?

Ridiculous. Major fail…no matter how good a story might follow….

We have to face it. This regime has no interest in writing for vets and fan favourites. In fact…they have no knowledge of how to do so. They know how to write for doppelgangers, mistaken identity people, and psychopathic murderers. Anyone with a rich past, a legacy connection, and fan support is not long for this show. The character assassination and destruction on this show since 2012 has been staggering, sad, and shameful. I am not so upset about Duke, per se…..just the pattern and general state of the show. Duke was broughtback for little to no reason…in a stupid mask plot….he spent most of his first year playing dress up with Emma…then his second year he was turned back into a mobster and chose to be a murderer over being with Anna. These stories about grown mobsters crying in hospitals ring totally false and hollow. Sorry….these murderers cry ing over their family as they are in the midst of ordering hits and plotting murders doesn’t make me well up with sympathy. They look like overgrown imbecilic crybabies. “Oh I love my family so much….”. Waa waa….quit the mob then. You either want to kill people as “business”…..”or you want to stop being a murdering douche bag. They love the violence….they love the money…and they love the power. They are not misunderstood heroes….they are blood thirsty disgusting thugs. Sonny Julian Shawn Carlos and the airheaded sluts who love them and follow them…Carly, Alexis, Jordan, etc. One thing these mobsters always say “It’s not that easy t o leave.”. Actually yes it is. This is a show that freezes and thaws human beings. The headwriter can do anything…and if any writer wanted to return this show to its former glory….one stroke on the keyboard and it could be done. Sadly no one has wanted to do that since Wendy Riche left.

LOL, Aden! “Duke was brought tback for little to no reason…in a stupid mask plot….he spent most of his first year playing dress up with Emma…then his second year he was turned back into a mobster and chose to be a murderer over being with Anna.” Let’s not forget the relish story…that was such a travesty that they killed off BOTH AJ and Ian just for being part of it! (Actually, truth be told I didn’t mind it too much because it was classic Quartermaine…and it was fun seeing them go at it.) But Duke? Instead of having he and Anna run into each other’s arms…she was running from the masked man in her mind…and by the time she got over it he was back in the mob.

I’m thinking maybe Ron et al can’t write for the vets because they weren’t their babies to begin with…so they’re dumping them one by one…they can create whomever they want with new characters and make their own mark in GH history. Too bad they can’t seem to do both…

We often agree and I’ve repeatedly replied to you only for my remarks to fail to post. I shall try once again….I like your most expedient suggestions for dispensing with the aforementioned annoying and useless albatrosses currently afflicting Port Charles. Alas, I have no realistic expectations that our wishes shall be granted, but they definitely work for me! (And please, let Shaun and Jordan take TJ with them!!!!) However, what you term a “clean-up,” I call only a “good start.” There is so much deadweight on the canvas that needs to be cleared so as to afford not just our favorite vets more airtime, but the charming character actors that are so quintessentially GH…the far-too rare glimpses of them are sights for sore eyes, plus the obvious use of no-name extras is becoming increasingly apparent. Hence, to our list of gotta-go peeps, I add Felix and Hayden….in their place, let’s have a visit from Britt, Frisco, Noah, Blackie and even a recast Dr. Jeff Webber…..would be great for Liz to have her daddy around, not to mention Monica her ex-hubby!

    Shay replied

Thank you for your gracious thoughts, Fanny! Yes, I also hope for GH’s continued viability, but so many days when one tunes in it makes one wonder how this can ever be the case when it seems to be on such a ruinous path with its uneven writing, inconsistent plot points and less than engaging newbies. Personally, I have nothing against the blending of old and new….if it is done seamlessly and with finesse, but such has not been my experience past the arrivals of Britt and Dr. O. I have found that most of the characters that have followed, save for Madeline/Magda and Billy Miller’s “Jake,” which is essentially just a Jason recast, to simply be wanting in all aspects. As long as the show’s deep, storied history is plumbed for future developments and characters linked to those who came before are skillfully and thoughtfully introduced, then I’m generally content. But those inane out-of-left-field folks like the ludicrous Sappy, Carlos, Hayden, Felix, Jordan, and Nina simply don’t ring true for me as part of the Port Charles landscape…there is far too much emphasis on these interlopers, which alienates long-term viewers….especially when they remain whilst beloved vets are eliminated. Hence, while I can appreciate that there is a need to attract new fans with fresh faces and more modern twists, conversely offending the loyal base of followers in the bargain won’t do anything to increase future audience numbers.

Things change. Duke was NOT important to the GH canvas anymore–and hasn’t been in a long time. He looked way too old for Anna, and the romance was not compelling anymore.

He was killed to move the story forward. And it will. I think it’s all a bit intriguing right now–Anna’s a little nuts, Julian is overwhelmed–and a bastard, Carlos is a wuss, Jake’s an innocent caught up in this, Sloan is not as corrupt as we first thought (or is he?).

    Reply

    rebecca1 replied

He was only not important to the canvas because they made him unimportant! He WAS important in that he was a major love of Anna’s, he’s friends with Mac, Felicia, “step” granddad to Emma…and could have been a powerful player. They could have found something that would bring this character and their romance back to life.

He looked great; not too old for her. Anna/Finola is about two years younger than him…she keeps in shape, colors her hair, etc. He has the “debonair” look. I’m thinking if they didn’t make him gray and have him buttoned up all the time they’d have been more of an aesthetic match. Either way, I’m not hung up on that as several here are. They’re both gorgeous…they loved each other…and fit.

They wasted him literally and figuratively on the show this time ’round.

    Lucy D. replied

He really wasn’t brought back to be important. He wasn’t on contract; he was recurring.

I’m sorry, but this is a business. The soaps need to attract younger viewers, the kind who tune in to see the likes of the Ryans or Billy Miller.

I know I’m biased since I’ve never been a big Duke person–I’m an Anna/Robert 4ever kind of gal. I just don’t think there was much chemistry any more between Anna & Duke.

Just like I’m not sad to see Tony Geary go. He had his time, he was great–and now it’s time for new stars & stories.

    rebecca1 replied

And therein lies the problem, Lucy D. Many of these great GH characters are “people” many of us still love…Mac, Felicia, Lucy, Scott, Duke, Anna, AJ, Monica…they ARE GH. If they don’t want fans out of their targeted demographic…they should close “the hospital” and rewrite the whole thing with all new young actors. If they are continuing a “continuing” story…then they should still have on actors that are part of the history of the show, alive, well and ready to work. Actors that many viewers still want to watch. You mentioned Robert Scorpio. I love him, too. Should he not be on the canvas anymore…lol…he’s not, but there’s always the hope he’ll eventually return.

Stories include all generations. They’re wiping out the vets.

Some stories are brilliant, some stories are just– well, not. (Popsicle Helena!) All said, it is still how our General Hospital. Our one hour to get together with people we’ve watched and invested a small part of our lives with. That’s why we will put up with less than stellar stories while waiting for the brilliant ones– that is also why we rebel at the stories that permanently take our favorites away. I did not see their original Duke and Anna but I could see the chemistry between them and was sorry they didn’t get to act on it for more than a few shows.
