On Thursday’s tearjerker on General Hospital, the story of Luke Spencer (Tony Geary) came full circle as a depressed Luke who was dumped by Tracy (Jane Elliot) returned to the old Spencer home on Elm Street … one last time before it’s demolished.
But as Luke comes to the house in which he killed his father Tim, and accidentally killed his mother Lena, he has a gun in tow ready to take his own life. After first encountering the spirit of his evil father Tim, who tells Luke to kill himself and that he will always be haunted by him, next sister Patricia in her teenaged years visits Luke. She tells him not to take his own life, because everything she did would then have been for naught in protecting Luke from the Spencer family secret for decades.
But it was being visited by the spirit of his mother Lena, played beautifully by Laura Wright, that registered to Luke, and her forgiveness and advice was paramount to talk Luke down and for him to move on with his life. Lena related to Luke: “I love you. I can never blame you for what happened … you stood up to your father’s endless abuse of us. You stood up, because I was too afraid to. You did own what you did, even though you didn’t realize it. You carried that weight for decades. Don’t you see, Luke? That is why you lashed out … that is why you pushed away people. Not because you were evil, not because you were like him, because you were lost.” Lena goes on to say, “Accepting the truth about what happened to me should not be the reason your life’s ends, it should be the reason it finally begins.”
Later, Lena continues to comfort Luke and goes on to say, “I have been watching you all these years, letting that fateful night define you. No more. No more, Luke. It’s time for you to stand up again. You figure out who you are. Better yet, you figure out who you want to be without all of those demons bottled up inside you. The possibilities are limitless. It’s time to move forward. There is good in you, Luke. Way more than there ever was bad. That’s why you ran away from your family to protect them. ”
Lena tells Luke that he is finally free of his demons! Luke replies with tears in his eyes, “Momma, what can I do? What can I ever, ever do to make it up to you?” Lena says, “You find the man you were meant to be. You find a way to be happy and you choose to live.”
Major kudos go to Laura Wright and Tony Geary for their performances in their scenes that tugged at the heart!
