109 March 30th, 2016 General Hospital Nurses’ Ball Set For To Air This May!

Courtesy/ABC

General Hospital’s annual Nurses’ Ball sponsored by Aveeno returns Tuesday May 24-26  on ABC.

Founded in 1994 by Port Charles resident Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring), the Nurses Ball is one of fictional Port Charles’ most glamorous charity events dedicated to HIV/AIDS awareness and research.  Stunning red carpet fashion, breathtaking musical performances and plenty of intrigue and drama define this exciting programming event. “

We are pleased to bring back the Nurses’ Ball this year and delighted that Aveeno will continue as our corporate sponsor,” said Vicki Dummer, head of Current Series Programming. “The Nurses’ Ball brings awareness to AIDS research while giving our immensely talented cast a chance to showcase their vocal talents.”

“This will be GH’’s 12th Nurses’ Ball and each year our wonderful viewers have come to expect  plenty of music, dance, glamour and of course an abundance of drama,” said Frank Valentini, executive producer, General Hospital. “There’s a lot of exciting performances and appearances in the works. You won’t want to miss it!”

In addition to gorgeous gowns and elegant tuxedos, viewers can also expect to see some familiar faces from a morning news program and other entertainment news shows, all making cameo appearances on the Ball’s red carpet. As always, the Nurses’ Ball will be the backdrop for several dramatic events taking place in Port Charles including a popular resident whose life hangs in the balance, a surprising arrest, a new couple and much more.  General Hospital will celebrate its 53rd anniversary on April 1, 2016.

Glad to hear the GH Nurses’ Ball is returning for its 2016 edition?  If you had your wish list, which Port Charles characters would you like to see perform at the ball?  What numbers should they sing or dance to?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

The NB is not my thing– I watch for the drama not the fashion or the musical numbers. I detest all the build in ads for Aveeno, I know it is a necessary evil for the show to afford the NB, but still it is painful watching the actors do mini ads throughout the show.

So if we are doing this thing all I ask is please don’t sing You are not alone anymore as the closing number. The first time was touching, the second time okay, but last year it was just plain hokey.

The only good thing about the NB is shining a light on HIV AIDS, a cause that still needs support, so for that reason I will put up with this silliness once a year.

You are not alone, Mary SF. Aids and HIV research are causes deserving support- especially financial- There have been huge strides made but there is no cure and -very important to me- but does ABC contribute any monies towards the cause- ok bringing attention to a cause is great but on GH it always enhances their bottom line. Charities don’t get free airtime or ads and Shriner’s Hospital does great work but they also paid a pretty penny out of their donations to run that promotion and others. Love the NB and thanks for sponsoring, Aveeno but ABC seems to use any excuse for product placement.

Not excited @ it. Unless there will be some exciting story coming out of it, otherwise I can do without the cheesy performances. To me, it is 3 days of wasted airtime and dusting Lucy off.

Here, here, Ces! Just say NO to the “Coe!”….and HELLO! to the “(Dr.) O.!” as the next NB hostess. It’s time for the multi-talented Kathleen Gati to shine….she is superb with both comedic and dramatic material, and her musical talents are non pareil….in other words, either do this thing right this year, or don’t do it at all. We need big-name performers with past GH links like Jack Wagner or Rick Springfield (preferably both….) as the major acts. For every great Liesl or Spinelli set we witnessed in 2015, there were three or four other highly amateurish filler efforts to endure….no more please! And as much as I adore Epiphany—her renewed presence on the GH floor is a most welcome one, by the way….—I concur with those who have had more than enough of “You’re Not Alone!” Nurse Johnson deserves a more upbeat spot on stage this year….how about with “It’s Raining Men?” (You go, Girl!)

Ha! Hey, if Lucy Coe stays off the show and Dr. O takes the reigns then maybe, I can handle 3 days of this musical. What would even get me excited is if Dr. Munroooo has a Tango in him?!! Perhaps little Emma gave him a few tips offscreen yesterday ;) I’d take Jack & Rick’s visits too — the rest of them? I can do without; horribly embarrassing to watch. If a new viewer popped on screen watching Spinelli in action, they are sure to flip that station. Cheers Shay!

    Norma replied

No to Richard Simmons who can stay hidden from view and deal-a-meal-a-box -of-twinkies. And I am fat, too, fyi. GaGaGati? Hell yes. I would much rather delve into Epiphany’s personal life than trot her out like the gays will get a paycheck that week then fade into oblivion. I wish they would do a show like Port Charles or GH after dark that focuses only on the characters deemed not important enough to be on Gh except a random peek-a-boo or more like a sighting of bigfoot- not often, not sure, but certainly exciting! Coe can go since her character has left the building and I don’t want to see Sabrina taking the lead in the show, either. Helena Cassadine is not dead I hope and can pop in and torment and let’s have a redux of when AMC poisoned the punchbowl- what was that they spiked it with and did it not make everyone swing out horizontally?

    Shay replied

Yes, Ces!!!….I would also love to see Griffin and Anna ala “Tango Port Charles!” There is already a smoldering, yet also sweetly sentimental, sort of chemistry between them….they definitely need to take to the dance floor and see where that leads! I’m all in for Liesl to hijack the show as her own one-woman tour de force, too….just as she briefly did a few years back….and speaking of Mutter, her daughter Britt had better once again sneak into town under the cover of darkness for a snack and snark session with Brad….their cutting, catty critiques were far better entertainment than 2015′s actual event! (Wonder if Dr. Westbourne will make it to his wedding?) As for Jack and Rick…oh, please! (If only…) .About the only place we part company is that I was charmed by Spinelli’s “It Might Be You” performance during the last NB….it was actually one of the very few pleasant surprises of that otherwise awful, bland debacle.

    Norma replied

Britt and Brad – why were they erased or marginalized. I loved to hate Brad but he so won me over and their scenes together and their friendship – two outcasts or pariahs – oh it was real to me and touching- and neither was wealthy I don’t think and damn I miss these broken people with real problems who make mistakes and are human and interesting.

    Shay replied

Norma, you’re a gal after my own heart!!!!…..I cannot abide the insufferable Sabs either….for the past three years, her character has managed to one way or t’other hog the NB limelight…first coming out as a Disney deb, then emoting in an utterly OTT fashion over an obviously fake preemie (cabbage patch) doll and finally taking up what seemed to be permanent residence on the stage in one sick-inducing performance after another….oh, please spare me for 2016! Good Golly, Ms. Gati, let your Liesl commandeer that ballroom this time around and rule the show with your cabaret caliber act! As for Epiphany, I could not agree more….that gem of a woman should have had a life with her kinfolk putting down stakes in her midst…nieces, nephews, sisters and bros…but instead of creating a logical core family built around Nurse Johnson as matriarch, we kept getting all these random, mostly unrelated, black characters that had little rhyme or reason for being on the canvas whilst they simultaneously had the temerity to stash away beloved Epip for how many months on end? We only saw her when it was time for a MagicMilo moment or another round of “You’re Not Alone.” Now that she’s kicked Sonny’s rear end back into fighting form and resumed her large and in charge reign at the nurses’ station, all seems right again on the GH floor! Lastly, I’m going to refrain from taking potshots at Poor Richard Simmons….he’s been having a tough go of it lately….I wish him well, as long as he’s not popping out of broom closets or glitterbombing the good people of Port Charles.

    Helen replied

You are making me laugh, thanks. I do not care for Frisco, sorry- and was not there something he did that made him not-so-welcome to come back- somebody knows I know I read something was he thinking he was back regular and then not or? Regardless, I love Epiphany, but would like to see her locked in a closet or tied up in some type of crisis that is perilous and could be fatal. Then, when she is utterly despairing and near death, sings the song and her faith takes over and she the does a wonderwoman number and frees herself or is freed. Dr. O is such a delight to me and Richard Simmons I don’t care for but yes do not wish him anything but the best. Make Sonny strip down and boogie. If you are the new king of GH- well part of that should be decided by us voting on your scantily clad bod dancing for your supper.

    Helen replied

Love Brad- frankly did not at all- but then swooned and hard. Same with Britt, really- hated her but then loved her, too- that is so interesting and the two together I felt was some great great story. Felix for me came on too nelly -was not he selling cosmetics or something- and nothing wrong with that but seemed he was presented as gay plus. Now he is nothing but some kind of intercept for Sabrina and I could be talked into her being killed off. I am not nice that sounds terrible. But the truth.

    CeeCee replied

Yes, Shaybelle. Dr. O all the way. I would love to hear her rendition of “Hi Lili, Hi Lili, Hi Lo”…. Or “WALK THIS WAY”.

    Shay replied

@Helen….I fear if Sonny were to strip down and boogie at the NB, then all the female attendees would end up pregnant. Sorry if that notion offends, but Dimples does have a pretty stellar track record on that account. Like you, it also took me awhile to warm up to Brad….he was too sleazy and constantly on the prowl when he first turned up as GH’s resident lab rat….but eventually he won me over, especially as he became Britt’s pal, confidante, partner in crime and oh yes, said “babydaddy!” (That one never failed to make me guffaw.) Whilst I always got a huge kick out Dr. Westbourne, it was the moment she was revealed as Dr. O.’s offspring that really sealed the deal for me….what inspired insanity it was to create that mutter-daughter duo! As for Sabs, well, I’ve been trying to talk the showrunners into killing her off for years now, to no avail….at this point, I would just settle for sending her packing with a one-way ticket out of Port Charles–wait… she’s already gone, why even bother to bring her back? Sadly, with or without her, it’s too late to rehab Felix after all the damage she has done to him. I didn’t mind his “Avon calling” shtick…okay, it was really “Cuckoo for CoeCoe Cosmetics,” but his omnipresent role as Cinderbrina’s perpetual fairy godfather—no pejorative meant there, I’m just doing a word twist on the characters in the original tale—gave him no identity of his own. He should have been Epiphany’s nephew and spent more time hanging with her than Sabs….even when he was beauty consulting with Carly he was much more bearable….now I just feel sorry for him when I think of all the wasted opportunities that were squandered on his character.

But for mw..noww anyway, I’m interested in Nina’s emotional, professional growth and giving her Crimson was a great vehicle for that. I like that she’s surpassed everyone’s expectations and is finally reclaiming her life. I think it’d be interesting to put Lucy and Nina in each other’s orbits. Can’t visualize whether they’d be better as great friends or competitors.

The Nurses Ball was great in 2013, when they brought it back for the 50th Anniversary, the two years after, particularly last year, weren’t that good at all. I thought last year’s was pretty terrible actually. I remember feeling so embarrassed seeing a bunch of random extras sitting in the ballroom, instead of the characters that we know and love. So I’m hoping under Jean and Shelly, they get back to what made the Nurses Ball great, and make it less about the cheesy cartoon dance numbers.

    rebecca1 replied

That bothers me too Dan…a half empty room filled with extras. The ol’ budget strikes again. They should plan for the NB in advance and set aside what they’d need to pull it off…let’s wait and see. Maybe we’ll be surprised.

I love the Nurses’ Ball because we get to have some lighthearted fun with the performances, see exciting storyline climaxes, and most of all, knowing that HIV/AIDS awareness and research is what’s behind it all. In addition, the antics of Lucy Coe as emcee is synonymous with the Nurses’ Ball, and if they even try to have the ball without her will not work. I’m wondering about this because Lucy hasn’t been seen in close to a year. Bringing Lynn Herring back for this is hugely important also because she founded the Nurses’ Ball! Having her stick around and bringing storyline life to Lucy would be icing on the cake! Maybe she and Laura could open that spa they talked about!

Imagine it- Led Zeppelin on General Hospital WOW & WOAH!

They should have had Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven play when Lila walked up the stars..

Treating HIV has come a long long way since the 1st Aids Ball..

Johns Hopkins has performed the nation’s first liver and kidney transplants between donors and recipients infected with HIV.
HIV to HIV transplants not only help save the lives of HIV positive patients but also relieves the pressure of the overall transplant list. That means EVERYONE that needs a transplant will now have better chances at receiving a viable organ.

    Rose replied

Love the Lila/Stairway To Heaven idea. Plus, Lila/Anna Lee was British. But I’m more inclined to have GH homegrown ‘s come back. Maybe a little more tame, but more suitable to the event.

This has improved my life as I look and feel better and am more popular at parties and in bars at night.

I read that Lynn Herring isn’t interested in coming back for a one-shot appearance here and there. I’ll miss her but feel the event is bigger than any one person. Hopefully, they will put a lot of good story around this show and not have it be a throw-away episode; make their events count for something. I don’t need special guest appearances to get me to tune in, just good story.

Saw your comment about Aveeno. There has been several local and nat’l news stories I’ve seen recently that, compared to expensive brands, these more reasonably priced ones can be very good. Something to think about, especially as you say they can work effectively for you. They also say, to make sure they have sunscreen component.

I used to look forward to the Nurses Ball back in the day. They were an annual treat, and the show used to pull out all the stops for them. The musical numbers were usually hokey and cute, performed by beloved cast members. There was always drama, and storylines would always come to a head. I was very happy that it was revived in 2013, and in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary and a gaggle of returning vets, it was very enjoyable. However, the 2014 and especially the 2015 version just did not cut it. First of all, male strippers have no place at a function designed to bring awareness to HIV and AIDS. The Magic Milo was Major Miscalculation!! That was done purely to fuel Carlivati and Valentini’s fantasies. It should NOT return. Second, that You’re Not Alone song, like Mary said, should be retired. It was novel the first year, iffy by the second year, and by the third year, it was just lame and limp. Also, if they are going to do it, they should do it right!!. Last year’s show looked it was shot in a tiny little corner room, not a grand ballroom. This is a show that will rent REAL warehouses to film violent mob shootouts in…why can’t they make a space look like an actual ballroom, or rent an actual ballroom? The musical acts also used to make sense with who was partnered together to perform. The last couple years, there has been a lot of “Huh?” moments. Like why is 40 something Sam on stage jiggling around with the teenage and 20 something set? And to have these polished, perfectly choreographed routines…when would ANY of these people have had the time to get together and rehearse?? At least back in the day, it was believable that Alan and Emily could have rehearsed at home offscreen, etc. I enjoy watching the Nurses Ball, and I just hope it’s done right. It was an event filled with heart and humanity, and I hope that can be restored.

But he was stalking his prey as Faison can not no way will not stop as he is obsessed with her and if he can’t get to her himself– I love being deceived-when it is from the safety of my tv set.

I must say that is one of the most intriguing thoughts, and I like it very much. But I am doubting it. I do very much enjoy being surprised- I wish they would do things like this more or at all.

Sonny will host the Nurses Ball with the Corinthos family performing all the dance routines and musical numbers while the other residents of Port Charles simply sit on the sidelines and watch (you know, like every other episode on this show under the current writing team).

I suspect Rachel Berlin, daughter of Raymond Berlin, will probably volunteer to manage the cashbox full of NB proceeds….her true talents lie in financial filchery, not musical performance.

Am I the only one who is totally underwhelmed by Hayden, aka, Rachel Berlin?

    Norma replied

What fails me is this is being touted as a “Ripped from the Headlines” storyline some type of big deal -when it is or was done on Law and Order was good but don’t see this as groundbreaking or really so great but looks like more will be revealed. Love Rebecca Buddig.

    Shay replied

@Harry….No, you most certainly are not the only one….I’m no fan of Hayden—-aka,Rachel Berlin, daughter of Raymond Berlin—either! In fact, we seem to share a mutual lack of interest in a number of female GH characters…Nina and Sabs, to name just a few!

  22. Brett says:

Please Shelly and Jean, take a vacation and get someone else to write the ball so you don’t ruin it like you have every other story and character on the show.

I just saw a re-tweet from Jackie Zeeman/Bobbie Spencer it was from ABC about the nurses ball and has a picture from what must be a prior NB- I recognize her and I think next to her is Audrey but I have no clue who the other women -and there are several- are -?? Anyone know?

I saw the pic too and wonder but Bobby Spencer looks like 20 years old or so in the picture so anyway I am curious too.

I could be wrong but I don’t think the men stripping is all gay gay gay. Good portion of viewers women. I love a good looking man but the stripper thing is not my cup of tea. Perhaps the gals should shimmy shim shim for a change.

Give me a healthy, strong looking guy anytime. But they don’t need to look like a weight lifter. When I see them all ab-ed up it’s a turnoff, and getting such results is probably too narcissistic for me. Or they are possibly following the current entertainment formula for body image for next role.

Well I agree- blame the gays for the male stripping or gratuitous beefcake shots- I think not- and if they are to blame then they deserve to be more than flies on the wall that are made into Stepford gays. And I would take a Stepford gays story as that would raise some hell. I am a woman and like men. But Dr O in a showstopping Kitten with a whip- and that whip held by my beloved tramp Monica- yes she was a tramp- albeit decades ago- would love a dominatrix disco number that gives them both a chance to shine and also recognizes their friction.

Maybe the Dr.O and Monica “disco” you have suggested a little toooooooo much for the NB?

Disco Inferno! Erica Kane’s Disco burned to the ground, Laura was raped by Luke at the disco- not sure of discos on other soaps.

The nurses ball is a lovely part of the history of General Hospital and serves to being awareness to HIV/Aids issues. Thanks to Aveeno’s generous sponsorship, we will carry on the tradition with pride and joy. Here’s to NB 2016.

Darling, I will dress to kill- as this year’s Ball will be chock-full of the drama, excitement and am confident it will please. I am getting some personal coaching on my routine from Miss Nikki Newman–just a little tease of what awaits!

    Shay replied

Dear Ms. Davis-Jerome…..It has come to my recent attention that the last two of my extremely cordial and highly creative responses to you—one here and another at a previous thread— failed to reach your desk. Needless to say, I am truly disappointed, because I thought that we were in the process of establishing a really nice dialogue here at MFSoaps….I had even suggested the notion of a lunch meeting, so, of course, I was endeavoring for a more positive reaction to my most cheeky–but quite honestly, non-malicious—musings. Ahhh….such missed opportunities, but I’m resilient and not easily discouraged! Another day, another posting! At any rate, I trust you will speak with your “people” about these hopefully isolated situations at your first possible convenience….in between your rehearsals for that killer NB routine which you’ve referenced, of course!!! All the same, thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to reply to me! It was most appreciated!

Is it even in question whether Lucy will be back for this? Lynn Herring was quoted in an article on this site not that long ago saying, “No thank you, if you don’t have a real storyline and something real for me to do, I’m not interested.” So I don’t think she’d be interested in coming back for just a few days to emcee the NB. So that would make Dr. O the logical choice.

I’m really torn on this one. The cause is worthy and I like that they’re remembering and honoring an important part of GH history, but there has to be the right combination or heart, hijinks, hilarity, and high drama, and when they don’t get it right (as others have pointed out in regard to the unevenness of the last few years), it’s bloody awful. I guess it’s worth seeing Altman and Passanante’s take on it, once, before I write it off entirely, but if it can’t be done right, then I guess I’d just as soon the show not do it anymore and move on to something else.

There’s several medical areas of interest that have shown up on GH the last couple of years. It might be nice to even reference some of them with the HIV/Aids…like bi-polar, and since we are such a global world, even tie in Dr. Finn with the Zika mosquito type things.

I am so glad to have another nurses ball and think it should be every year and make it law. I truly miss the holiday episodes and I do not care to see a repeat of any episode regardless of how good it was. In our home they were on the tv and part of the tradition and a great way to start conversations- just as this site is for that. I am so delighted to never see some stupid post about how they made so much money doing nothing or -well I am sure you know of what I speak. I love the shows, some things and days are better than others, but I truly feel for the writers- past, present, and future, as it seems like a thankless job. Or you are thanked and then a few months later, dismissed. I can not imagine doing their job and if they are constantly attacked. I mean I see just from here hatred of the new ones and the old ones – and some are complimentary of new not past and vice versa. I don’t understand why AMC and OLTL did not work out with the on-line – is it because not enough viewers does anyone know and is their reprisal completely out of the question?
