We could not be more happier for all of our friends and colleagues over at General Hospital!  They fought the fight, and this time ABC made the right decision by keeping their now only soap opera on the air, for what we understand, up to this point, as a definite one-year renewal.   We will of course keep you updated as more information comes to light, officially from ABC.

In the excited of yesterday and today, many of the Port Charles stars took to Twitter, or spoke with ABC Soaps In Depth and we share a few with you now! Frank Valentini, GH’s EP, “Congratulations to the GH family and all of our tremendous fans!” Steve Burton,  “I can’t tell you how excited I am for our GH family and our fans.  “Congrats!! No flatline for this Hospital. Much luv.”  Maurice Benard,  “I am so damn proud to be on General Hospital. Frank has worked his ass off to make this happen. And if he can do this in three months, imagine where we’ll be a year from now! I’m thrilled for the cast, crew, directors, producers, writers, everyone in production — and grateful for the hard work they’ve all done to make General Hospital successful.”

Carolyn Hennesy  “I am so thrilled by the GH renewal! Hoorah for the fans…YOU did it!” Nancy Lee Grahn, “One year renewal! Thank you ABC, GH fans, Frank Valentini, Ron Carlivati, What a difference! Upward!”  Kimberly McCullough,  “Thanks ABC. Now GH can reach 50 years!!”

We congratulate Frank and Ron on amazing first few months …  and to the fans of GH, you got your wish! Now, keep tuning in and keeping the daytime soaps alive!

I guess I’m a bit of a cynic…I’m very happy about the 1 year renewal. On the other hand, I don’t trust ABC. They could go a long way to changing that if they use the Good Morning America summer thing to reboot OLTL or AMC to start again in the fall.

I dont trust them at all ,they should have renewed for 3 years ,1 year is nothing.

I think they should have renewed GH for 5 years at least…I agree 1 year is nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clearly, soap fan anger is hurting abc where they notice it the most, in their wallet. IMO This is another in a long line of ploys to get the fans off their back. (What ever happened to Prospect Park?) In a year they think things will quiet down so they can axe GH too. It also gives abc time to develop yet another POC show. BUT it proves that the fans are making a difference so we should be more vocal than ever because we will never forget what abc did or give up. Why not pull TR right now and air “The Best Of” OLTL/AMC reruns through the summer?

While I’m happy that GH is going to see its 50th year on the air, are we going to be treated to retreads of Sonny stories, or are the writers going to bring something fresh and exciting? Ron C only brought his A-game to OLTL when he knew it was going off network TV. Before that, OLTL had become a caricature of itself.

It’s about time ABC/D does something right by it’s viewers. Now, they need to support General Hospital, advertise it during primetime shows and leave it the heck alone. I’m thrilled beyond measure that at least ONE show that I’ve grown to love is going to continue but based on ABC’s past behavior I feel the threat still looms until someone wakes up and realizes how valuable these shows are and is willing to take them on. ABC is not to be trusted with anything we love.

I agree. Don’t trust ABC one bit. For all we know they could be working on alternative programming that won’t be ready for on air for another year. Hence the decision to renew GH for 1 year. I’m sending out a request to all soap fans. Please support GH, Y&R, B&B and Days. They are the last of a dying genre.

Does this mean The Revolution could be cancelled????????? What about Katie Couric timeslot?????????????????

    barbara t replied

I dont trust abc/disney either I think they are pulling another pp and trying to shut us up,they should have renewed for 3 to 5 years,so I will continue to boycott no abc for me I only watch general hospital.they will never get me to tune into any of there programming until the soap problem is fixed.that means amc oltl and gh are put back where they belong or give agnus nixon the rights back and let her shop; around for a new home for them before its to late.

    Susan M. replied

The Revolution didn’t last even 6 months,,,That’s no surprise to me…I knew it wouldn’t last…And it just pisses me off that they had to cancel OLTL for that crappy show……….OLTL shouldn’t have been cancelled in the first place..Oh well…

6 months! Hell, it didn’t last 3. Total travesty that our beloved wonderful OLTL was thrown away for this garbage. Sick over it.

    barbara t replied

This is sad we lost one life to live for this garbage and there still going to replace the revolution with another dopy show ,abc/disney renewed gh for 1 year ,THEY ARE TRYING TO SHUT US UP,If they really cared they would have faith in general hospital and renew it 3 to 5 years.the boycott continues.

Ron and Frank have made GH watchable and I have been thoroughly enjoying it each and every day. Huge kudos to them. However, this reprieve is more relative to the Revolution sucking and being cancelled. It is imperative that fans continue to fight to save our soaps. ABCD wants out of the soap business. That has not changed.

  13. Yoyo says:

Finally! I have to admit I was not sure ABC/D would be smart enough to follow the fans. As much flack as former OLTL cast mates and crew (FV/RC) have received from GH fans, the new GH team should be congratulated since they pulled a miracle in 3 months!!! If the OLTL Fans weren’t so dead set on NOT tuning into Revulsion while supporting GH (which stopped GH’s bleeding!!!), this could have been another story. Maybe if we had started this with the cancelation with AMC we would have saved OLTL. Have to admit with the changes, GH is actually watchable again and MUST SEE TV. ROCK ON RC/FV!!! If everyone continues to support GH, we can take it to #1! It’s been done before! Let’s continue the fight that SOAPS MATTER.

Since FV and RC took over, GH is watchable and entertaining on a daily basis. Hopefully the ratings will increase enough to make ABC executives seriously consider rebooting OLTL which all of us Llanview fans miss very much. Everyone involved with the current GH deserve our heartiest congratulations!

Great News!!!! I for one don’t want anymore OLTL or AMC characters to come on board. There are plenty of GH characters that could come back, like Nicholas, Laura and Lucky(played by Greg Vaughan) JJ is a fantastic actor but I don’t buy him as a cop; he was too child like to be believeable.

Yay, “The Revolution” got the heave ho!!!! I hope the OLTL actors feel a bit vindicated. I mean OLTL (43yrs) vs The Rev (3mths). Let’s see the ppl want to see more talk shows or SOAPS? Looks like SOAPS to me!!! There’s more than enough of the “talking” format–GMA 7 to 9 a.m., Live w/Kelly, Rachel Ray, and THe View. I’m not watching any talk shows from 1 to 3:00 p.m. THat’s sacred soap watching ground for me. Just watching GH, not falling for any ABC tricks!!! Let’s see GH take it for 50+ yrs:)

I watch some old OLTL scenes on youtube and then pick up my kids. I really miss OLTL and LOVE soaps to escape the stresses of life from. I thought they’d be here forever or longer than now. I know GH didn’t get a permanent reprieve but still think it’s great that the soap fans make a difference. Well, soaps are my preference and don’t want to watch anything else during that time of the day. Sticking to my guns!!!

I know I cleaned my fridge last week ( to pass the time), that’s how much I don’t want to watch anything else bu soaps, it’s that bad!!!

My poor Grandma and mom wonder around the house looking for things to do and don’t even turn the TV on till dinner and start with GH now because they hate everything else on daytime. I buy reruns of OLTL and GH and watch those.

I’m OLTL fan also.. I use to watch Dark Shadows years ago.. Then in 1968 it was cancelled and replaced with OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was angry D. Shadows was cancelled…………..But my mom & I started to watch OLTL & the rest is history…I continued watching the soaps..Got hooked them watching them with my mom…Gh was in B& W & only a half hour…Shortly after changed to one hour…Loved the Woleks , Joe Riley, etc…GH at that time was Dr. Hardy , Jesse,Audry, Lucille, Baldwins…Those were the days..Till this day still enjoy watching my stories & I never get tired of watching them….When you think if daytime programming , you think of the soaps….

Both Dark Shadows and OLTL were on together when OLTL was only 30 minutes. Dark Shadows wasn’t canceled in 1971 because of OLTL. OLTL did not expand to more than 30 minutes until 1976. See Wikipedia.

If ABC really wants some attention (and ratings), they would work OLTL and AMC back into their daytime schedule at least as 1/2 hour shows. IMO they couldn’t buy the publicity that would generate.

The storylines are good if you like the SAME OLD REPEATS all the time MOB MOB MOB. Too bad Frank/Ron don’t write for other GH cast instead of bringing the failed OLTL cast over. OLTL ended now let us have our GH. Where has Patrick been?? what about Anna helping her sil/grand daughter lossing wife/mother. NO of course, not we have to promote more OLTL cast and more MOB stuff. I am happy for the cast & crew the show is not ending, BUT we need some stories of GH People and not the MOB. ratings will continue to fall with the same front and center as they have been in last years–the MOB
