46 January 28th, 2014 GH Knocked Out Of Soap Opera Showdown! AMC, OLTL, GL and DAYS Remain! Vote For The Best Soap Of All-Time!

When the results were in on last night’s voting for Parade.com’s Soap Opera Showdown, in the tournament of 16 soap operas,  it was General Hospital who was knocked out of the next round by none other than All My Children, as the outlet aims to name the Best Soap Opera Of All-Time as voted on by fans of the genre.

That now leaves All My Children going up against One Life to Live, and Days of our Lives going up against Guiding Light during today’s January 28th voting!

The semi-finalist voting which will select the finalists—is now open and will run until 11:59 p.m. ET Tuesday night. The finals will run along the same timeline on Wednesday and the champion will be revealed Thursday morning.

So, better make sure you vote! What did you think of General Hospital getting KO’d?  Who do you think will be left standing from the four soaps? Are fan bases mobilizing for their soaps?   Weigh-in!

I’m not voting. In my heart, “Santa Barbara” will always be the best soap opera ever.

“Days of Our Lives” is bound to win this. Fans of that show are rabid and obsessed like no other.

The favorite soaps are the ones that got cancelled! Shows how stupid the TV stations were for getting rid of them!

I saw the results and thought the same thing. Expensive or not, when will someone realize that there are multiple ways to give soap fans what they want and bring some of these soaps back in some form or fashion?

Gee…. you don’t think this poll might just reflect viewers trying to make a point do you?

GH is far better than both AMC and OLTL; maybe a little backlash here at their cancellations??

Did you actually WATCH “All My Children” and “One Life to Live,” though?

I actually began watching both (and “General Hospital”) in 1992 and for a good twenty years, it was very obvious (at least to me) that AMC and OLTL were miles better than GH.

I mean, it wasn’t even close. Most of the blame, though, goes to Jill Farren Phelps for turning it into The Sopranos on daytimein the 2000′s. It was much, much better from 1992 to 96.

Wish you would have left it at that instead of coming over to GH so that we have to live with FV/RC and Todd, Starr and Silas.

If not GH, then Days should be the winner…it was the only soap to be featured on the cover of Time magazine…that alone should mean something…GL was the longest running serial that started on radio…AMC and OLTL had their moments too…hey, they are all winners!!!

This is pointless…each soap has had there moment in the spotlight the last 60 plus years…all have had there ups and downs…ive listed my top favorites but sometimes some show i may list at no.3 might later be no.10 later depending how i felt about the storyline and its current cast at the time i was watching…i liked Another World mostly from the 1960s to the 70s but not so much later on…there are times now i think GH is best and next time i think its Days…so even my own top ten i listed is pointless…i loved all the soaps i ever watched…i will always consider Dark Shadows no.1 because it was so unique and fun to watch…Edge was because it was a mystery but with all others its really not that easy picking which i liked best because some days i liked them and other times i didnt. There are many younger people who werent around when some of these soaps were around…its not fair voting!

As I said twice on this topic– the best soap is whatever soap you enjoy watching– there should be no competition between them, you are spot on– just enjoy whichever one you like and the winner will be—- YOU.

Oooooh, this is going to be a tough one, but I voted for OLTL and DOOL. Not easily though. I loved AMC for years (until Ryan Lavery ate the show) and GL was a 70+ year iconic soap! I love OLTL & Days, but based on longevity I think the prize should rightfully go to GL in the end. Tune in tomorrow…

    It’s not boring…It’s a poll…of soaps…past and present. There’s only four left on network…so most of them are “gone…”

There are votes on best band, actor, president, TV show, movie…many from the past. If it’s boring to you…don’t vote…Simple.

I agree with you…i let myself get caught in the topic…it doesnt make sense to poll all these soaps and judge which is the all time best unless each fan has seen everyone to fairly judge them and many havent…all were the best and enjoyed by their fans at one point!!!

I am soooooo maaaad that gh got KOd from this. I do see people pulling together to get their fave soap to win. I think oltl will win. One Life to Live was always up to date with things everyone enjoyed. And OLTL weighed heavly in pop culture.

For my money, OLTL always was and always will be the best. I’ve watched soaps since childhood and remember Guiding Light, Search for Tomorrow, Love of Life, The Doctors, and dozens of other short lived shows like Never Too Young. Yes, I’m old. I watched GH from the day one until 2005. And I watched AMC during the last 70s and early 80s. Besides the stellar cast, I love OLTL because the way the stories always kept up with current cultural issues. I never felt like OLTL was about making super stars. They certainly have the cast for it. Story telling, drama, character development, and keeping the viewer interested was more important. And the characters – Viki, Dorian, Asa, Clint, Bo, Nora, Cassie, Herb, David (Rinaldi and Vickers), Marco, Karen, Larry, Jenny, Katrina, Wanda and Vinnie, Blair, Max, Todd, Tea, Mitch, Allison, Alex, Carlo, Tina, Cord, Lindsey, Gabrielle, Jessica, Natalie, John, Marty, I could go on and on.

    How I miss OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I have to go with my favorite soap of all time — ONE LIFE TO LIVE. If they win, will that bring them back. I highly doubt it, but I’ll continue to remain hopefully.
Over the years, I have watched many of the soaps listed: OLTL, GH, RH, AW, GL, and Days. As stated before, each soap had its moments of brillance. Each of them richly deserving. Although its interesting how 3 of the last 4 are no longer on network tv. Oh well, good luck OLTL. I hope you are the winner.

Looks like a stupid poll/contest. If you go by the soaps that have been ratings titans for extended periods of time, the best soaps of all time would be Guiding Light, As The World Turns, General Hospital and The Young & The Restless. Iconic soaps like AMC and OLTL, etc., have come and gone, BUT the four soaps I mentioned are the titans of the genre. Please let me know, fellow fans, if I missed any long-running #1′s, but I think I caught them all. I know DAYS and Another World were number one at times in the 1970′s, but neither had a long run.

I did some research, and it appears I missed Search for Tomorrow and All My Children on my list of past #1′s and a show called Hawkins Falls back in the 50′s. After the research, I’d say any list of the all-time greats would have to be topped by one of the following 3 shows:

    1) The Young & The Restless: #1 for 26 years; 7 Emmy best show wins out of 26 nominations;
    2) As The World Turns: #1 for 20 years; 4 Emmy best show wins;
    3) General Hospital: #1 for 9 years; 11 Emmy best show wins.

Ignoring the current state of the show, given the historical track record, Y&R should be considered the greatest American soap of all time. However, GH has the more popular “pop culture branding”, probably emanating from its spectacular larger-than-life run in the 1980′s. ATWT has the nostalgia factor going for it. Y&R wins by most measures, though. Again, forget the current state of the show, as this is an all-time contest.

started with EDGE OF NIGHT on cbs — loved the murder mysteries– and went with it to abc which introduced me to DARK SHADOWS.

then I picked up AMC with chuck, tara, phil … and young erica. not sure why, but I just lost interest in it in the 70s when I went to college.

began GH around the same time DS was on, and can recall when audry’s babysitter was killed and she hid the gun in the toilet, kept up with it for decades, but gave up when sonny and the mob crowded out every other story line. and then they fired ana lee (really classy, firing a woman who was almost 90), leaving left the show without the one character essential to every successful soap: a gentle, wise character with a heart of pure gold.

like vikk on OLTL. watched it since day one — before erika slezak, daytime’s meryl streep, was even on — right up through the last episode. it was my one break from life. five days a week. no repeats. no pre-empts (until “news” car chases came into vogue). it was the one constant in my life since my days in grade school. those characters and plots saw me through my father’s death. my mother’s. my first love’s. a tornado. a flood. back surgery. the loss of a job. … still mourn its cancelation. put the tv in the garage on jan 13, 2012, and haven’t watched since.

OLTL is the champ, and abc is the horse’s ass.

All MY Children is, in my opinion, by far the best soap. The last few years were a bit rough with the constant changes in head writers and focus, but it had wonderful character development and groundbreaking storylines throughout the years. My second choice would be the Young and the Restless. Third choice is Ryan’s Hope. Unfortunately, I just went on Parade site to vote for AMC and it states that the semifinal voting is closed. OLTL just beat AMC for the finals by a small margin. So it will be DOOL v OLTL. Oh well.

None that remain truly are the “best” of all time.

You need to think critically, and of course use the Nielsen ratings to determine that.

Overall from the 50′s through today, both ATWT and YR would fit that category.

And yes there will always be fan favorites GH and Days, but neither has the longtime ratings bragging rights.

The poll is fun for the fans to be sure.

I know thousands of people and none of them have ever been a Nielsen Ratings family or have ever known any! The Nielsen Ratings need to include everybody. All new TV’s should have Nielsen devices. Until then, Y&R is just lucky!

GH should have won. But I think everyone is trying to save OLTL. My vote would be OLTL. It was a very good show. Then AMC. Erica Cane was good but she didn’t win because she over acts.
