31 February 22nd, 2013 GH’s Genie Francis Talks About Its All-Time Fearless Leaders: Frank Valentini & Gloria Monty!

Courtesy/AP

In a wonderful video segment with the Associated Press, Genie Francis  talks about her return to General Hospital as Laura for the shows 50th anniversary!  But what we found most interesting and intriguing was how Genie explained how 35 years ago Gloria Monty came in as GH’s executive producer and changed the face of daytime and moved the show from 45 minutes to an hour, and within that resuscitated the show.

Now in 2013, Francis gives kudos to the current GH executive producer, Frank Valentini, for his passion, vision, and increasing the viewership, while being able to take General Hospital into the next phase of its historic run.

Watch the segment with Genie after the jump, and let us know what you think the contributions have been to the success of General Hospital from Frank Valentini, Gloria Monty and Genie Francis?

    Genie spoke the truth..
Frank and GH team have turned their personal lives working endlessly to give GH a rebirth.
It is fascinating, the journey we have been on from cancellation to #1 greatness..

(rant) No matter where you read of Y&R it always without fail said as ;The # 1 soap The Young and Restless, always with the #1 overkill, and that is slap in face to the other soaps..
Y&R may have more viewers but it is far from the best ..
I wish reporters and bloggers would stop with the ”The number one soap The Young and The Restless” geezus knock it off. It as if the #1 is glued to Y&R in every sentence..
Young and Restlessness the # 1 soap blahh blahh..
They should drop the constant #1 and simply write ‘The Young & Restless” and stop belittling the other soaps by doing that, as a poke to say the other soaps are not as good.. More viewers does not mean better soap just more viewers from around the world.,
GH is a much better soap and is #1 in greatness!!

BRAVO !!!! GH has arrived is a kicking ass !!!

I believe the reason why they have to keep mentioning Y&R is no.1 is because they seem jealous of all the attention General HOTpital has been recieving lately and they feel a desperate need to steal some of that attention away.

plus all the attention GH is getting is making Y&R restless.

I have ALWAYS said, “if Y/R is so wonderful, why is GH the show with the most Emmies?” And now they have Phelps and we know that story. Thanks to TPTB that brought FV and RC to Port Charles. And what a class act Genie Francis is. So so thankful, she was brought back.

I believe the reason why they always have to mention Y&R is the no.1 serial and it doesnt have to do with ratings or even if its good, it sounds almost as if someone is jealous about all the attention GH is getting lately and they feel a need to take some of that away. Y & R is a good serial with good actors and it doesnt need to repeat that they are in first place whenever there is talk about it, like its in a contest or something.
AS for GH FV + RC = SUCCESS! Vets return + great writing = SUCCESS! Satisfied fans + increased ratings =SUCCESS! And when you add all that together you learned that soaps arnt dead after all. So i hope networks like ABC have learned their lesson and wont make any mistakes in the future and continue to gives us viewers what we want: OUR SOAPS!

General HOTpital! FV + RC = SUCCESS! Return of vets + well-written storylines = SUCCESS! Satisfied fans + increased ratings = SUCCESS! Now add them all together you get a revived soap with proof the soap genre isnt dead after all. Hopefully networks, especially ABC has learn this lesson as well, and will continue to give us viewers what we always wanted: OUR SOAPS!

Wait, Frank Valentini has only been at GH for a little over a year and has already been added to the list of all time fearless leaders of a soap that has been around for 50 years? What about all the other producers that have worked at GH over the years? I guess its good to know that I’m just not imagining all the favoritism that goes on in the soap industry.

My take on that interview was an in your face JFP let’s face it the woman got rid of her at GH and only brought her back a couple of times for very short periods and then when JFP went over to Y&R one of the first people she fired was Genie. JFP treated Leslie Charleson, jackie Zemen and some others like that. JFP leans more towards the men at every soap she has ever EP at. Maybe she has changed time will tell at Y&R but I would not count on it. JFP is the one that really doubled down with the mob stories and to be honest I can finally stomach Sonny again.

I will add this to prove my point JFP has hired how many new men characters on Y&R. Compared to one female a recast Summer. And all of these men characters including her precious Steve Burton have added nothing to the show. Does FV walk on water no but compared to JFP he just might!

Genie is a class act! I echo your thoughts k/kay about being able to stomach Sonny. His scenes with Connie are riveting – but then again anyone on screen with Kelly Sullivan is in for a delicious ride.

    jim replied

Frank Valentini and the late Gloria Monty are considered fearless leaders because they came in at different times with their expertise and saved GH from near cancellation by revamping the show and giving viewers what they wanted to see while most of the previous producers b4 them came in, messed with success, and seemed not to give a damn about the soap or the fans. FV obviously cares about the soaps and the fans and that is why he is great and why we thank him.

I still think its too soon to be giving Frank Valentini the title of all time fearless leader when he’s only been working a little over a year at a 50 year old soap. Let’s wait and see what happens in the next 3 to 5 years before making conclusions about his overall impact on the show. I mean, this soap has been around for 50 years, the majority of that time without Frank Valentini and people want to suggest that he is one of the best things that ever happened to GH? Seriously?

    jim replied

Yes, SERIUOSLY! F.V. could be doing primetime or movies but instead he took over G.H. where he could have been critized, like the former production team, by GH fans had the show failed under him. However, Captain F.V. fearlessly jumped aboard the sinking GH ship and saved it from cancellation. In less than a year he and talented headwriter R.C. turned GH around, made it the most talked about soap, and proved those people wrong who thought viewers werent tuning in to soaps anymore and that the genre was dead. Sure others have kept the show on, but if it wasnt for someone like F.V. to come in and save G.H. , the show would not have survived to see its 50th year no matter who was there long b4 him. Some soap actors have won awards and praise for their acting when theyve been on for just a year while some of their castmates might have been on longer who barely recieve any recogniton at all. So i see no reason it cant be the same way with him. And whether or not he can continue this success he still deserves the praise he recieves now otherwise we’d be getting another lame talk show instead a GH 50th anniversary celebration.

Gloria M took risk by changing sets, lighting and cast changes that could have backfired. Frank V took risks by bringing back the vets and putting most in short story arcs and bringing back more focus on the hospital and put less focus on the mob storyline making it no longer the Sonny crime hour. Bringing back the vets could have backfired like it did at DOOL. But all these risks paid off. I consider this fearless for someone who hasnt been there too long.

I love Genie Frances…… she can soy or do no wrong. Genie Francis is as much General Hospital as Susan Lucci is the face of All My Children (past).

Go Genie….. Happy landing where you belong and hope you remain throughout your career…. even if you only work 2 or 3 days a week. You are apart of the legacy. You, Luke, Monica, and Tracy, and Audrey (whih her visits are missed and needed). Everyone else came from the 80′s. Your FOUR take us back to memories past of Gh in the 70′s and 60′s.

    Welcome home Genie….
