166 May 22nd, 2014 Gina Tognoni Lands The Role Of Phyllis On The Young and the Restless!

Courtesy/ABC

Big breaking news this morning!  The Young and the Restless had named Michelle Stafford’s successor in the role of Phyllis!  And the key part goes to … none other than former Guiding Light (Ex-Dinah) and One Life to Live (Ex-Kelly) star, and two-time Daytime Emmy winner, Gina Tognoni!

TV Guide which broke the story goes on to say that the Y&R brass thought that Tognoni’s audition and her take on the character was “flawless!”  You can look for Gina to show up as Phyllis and awaken from her coma late summer on the CBS soap!

As viewer know, Daytime Emmy winner Michelle Stafford, who had made such an impact in the role, departed the series in 2013 and signed on to play Nina Clay on General Hospital where she will begin airing in all new episodes in June!

So, what do you think about Gina Tognoni landing the role of Phyllis in one of the most hotly coveted parts in all of daytime?  Do you think she will rock the part? Let us know what you think of Y&R’s casting choice!

She won an Emmy for her portrayal of Dinah Marler on GL, and the (2) characters are very similar in nature. I think she’ll be great – although she has VERY big shoes to fill.

From what I’ve read here, Michelle Stafford is already riveting in her role of Nina on GH (as I knew that she would be). Hats off to both of these exquisite actresses – and a big congrats to both on their new roles!

Always liked her as an actress this tells me their probably is not going to be a mention of her being a grandma! This show is struggling so bad I do not think bringing this character back is going to help wish her good luck however.

    k/kay replied

Oh trust me I loved her as Kelly Cramer and she was a good Dinah on GL I just have a problem with the age but will see. I just remember MAB when she cast Maura West as Dianne total disaster. JFP has a problem with women over 40 and that offends me.

    k/kay replied

My sister seems to think with this casting that they are going to take her out of Jack’s orbit and maybe even put her in a triangle with Avery & Dylan. Any thoughts??

    k replied

Maybe Steve will come back to play Jason… Y&R sux.

    KansasGuest replied

The only reason Burton went to Y&R is because he’s a friend of JFP. Since she gives him everything he wants, he’ll probably be there as long as she is, or at least as long as he has that preferred 3-day filming schedule.

    Kaleesi replied

She is almost a decade behind Phyllis lol! I don’t see her with Jack either, GT could pass for his daughter, if ppl thought Neil and Hilary was bad. I also see her in a triangle with Shick or even with Davery lawd knows they need something! Can’t wait to see what she does with the role.

Good for her. Liked her on OLTL. Will she dye her hair or will the nickname Red be retired?

    Jimmy replied

Michelle Stafford has brown hair the last time we saw her yet Jack still called Phyllis ‘Red.’ And personally, I can’t see her as a love interest for Jack anymore, Michelle Stafford and Peter Bergman were so amazing together, I can’t imagine the same chemistry will be recaptured with PB and GT. Just like how David Tom and Amelia Henile don’t have nearly the same chemistry she had with Billy Miller, and because of that their relationship is falling apart. I think the same will happen with Jack and ‘Red,’ also because of his current relationship with Kelly. BTW Cady McClain is doing VERY well in the role!

    Harry replied

Yes she is, Jimmy. Cady is working the hell out of this part and Peter Bergman seems to be just glowing again. No matter who is playing Phyllis, I don’t want Jack reunited with her. I always felt that Jack was Phyllis’s second choice. It’s nice to see Jack with a woman who appreciates him for who he is.

    Jimmy replied

My thoughts exactly! It was pretty clear they were going to recast him when MM was fired, so have they found anyone yet? Hopefully it will be Trevor St. John or another actor of that caliber because Adam is a central character who drives stories, so the actor portraying him has to be up to that standard, as well as the standard that Michael Muhney has set for the character.

Almost no one is irreplaceable in daytime. And it’s ironic that the two actors you mention (Muhney and Miller) were recasts who were given a chance by the fans and showed what they could do with their roles. Let’s hope Y&R viewers keep open minds and see what Gina Tognoni brings to the table. She certainly has shown her acting chops on other soaps with memorable roles. Judging her before she even airs is just counterproductive.

That’s right, Monica! Seems to be a Negative Nancy in the house. Remember, Michelle Stafford was replaced once before by actress Sandra Nelson. She was a pretty good recast but when Michelle wanted to return they gave the part back.

When Michelle Stafford returned to Y&R in 2000 her replacement Sandra Nelson had been off the show for a bit.So it wasn’t like Michelle immediately came back and took back the character of Phyllis from her.

People need to remember the actor’s age has nothing to do with the character’s age. According to the history of the show, the character Phyllis came to GC in 1994 and was twenty years old at the time, which means Phyllis is supposed to be 40.

For me the real problem is they SORASed both of the character’s children that there is no way a forty year old Phyllis, would have a child in his thirties. Daniel should only be twenty and Summer should only be eight. So what is silly is they SORASed the kids but the parents don’t age with them– and that is why any actress who is the same age Phyllis should be would look too young.

I agree with you Mary…most do forget the age think…i remember on Days when 30something Susan Seaforth was playing Julie and they SORASed her son David who return to Salem played by 20something Richard Gutherie and l always thought Julie looked way too young to have a son that age…she did look slighly older when she shorten her hair but in the end it really didnt bother me like it has some others…Susan and Richard had great chemistry together as mother and son which helped make it work…back in the 60s the actress who played Ellen on ATWTs was only 5 years older than the actor who played her son Dan and audiences accepted it…im certain Gina will do great in the part…i watched her for years when she was Kelly on OLTL!!!

    Harry replied

Mary, you are quite right. Erica Kane taught us that age is irrelevant in soap land. We never heard Erica’s grandchildren call her grandma and we got to see her daughters age into their 30′s which Erica remained forever twenty-nine.

That age difference is really pushing it. If this goes and she’s successful by the time Michelle Stafford decides to return to Y&R (and she will) it will be a bit jarring. She’s going to come on looking Chelsea’s age. Not quite sure why they couldn’t do a proper talent search instead of a search your mind and choose an actress from all the shows we’ve helmed. Kelly Menighan-Hensley ex-Emily ATWT is the spot on age for this character and they could have at least given her a go at it. I’m flummoxed as to what is going on over there at Y&R.

Now the show is filled with BORING characters like Lily and Devon. Boring cast, boring stories, snoozefest! Now Chloe is going? My God. She was the firey one along with Phyllis that made stories fun. Reasons why I thought they will switch roles
Their ages, KD is 53, I thought they will SORASed Phyllis for four years and making the character a southern belle. GT is 40, I knew GT is eight years younger than MS to play Phyllis

Love it! She’s a great actress and she and Avery will look much more like sisters now. Yes, she is 8 years younger than Michelle Stafford, but I still think she’ll do a great job. Age on soaps has never seemed to matter before. My only gripe is that she is better suited for the role of Nina on GH instead of MS – it’d be nice is she was returning to Y&R as Phyllis as she is the original. But, I am looking forward to GT, I just hope the writers know what they’re doing with the role and it doesn’t become a train-wreck like Maura West as Diane did back a few years ago.

This casting has also given me hope that maybe Y&R’s casting department isn’t completely incompetent, and will find a suitable actor to play Adam, like they found Gina for Phyllis. nuBilly is not cutting it, and many people agree, even though he’s the original adult portrayer. However, GT as Phyllis is a good idea, so hopefully they will find a great actor to play Adam.

Age has nothing to do with it folks.

She’s playing a character, not herself.

And so that means she could play older or younger.

    Not an issue.

Cady M is 44 and they have her paired with PB.

AH was OLDER than Billy Miller.

    Etc. etc.

God what is with Y&R? I cannot believe how much they miscast people.

Gina would have been a better replacement for Cynthia Watros (Kelly) and Cady would have been a better replacement for Michelle Stafford (Phyllis).

How did they get this backwards??????

She came on to GL as “Dinah” replacing Wendy Monitz and was Fantastic. Congrats and Good Luck Gina. Now if we can undo the firing of MM and BM. FIRE JFP!!!!

I’m thrilled. I loved this actor as Dinah on GL. She’s pretty, cute, tomboyish, seductive, butt-kicking–anything and everything. I’ve missed seeing her on CBS. And now Phyllis will look age-appropriate for any possible future pairing with Nick. They’ve de-SORASED Phyl, that is for sure. It was impossible to see MS still playing the Phyllis part against Nick, Sharon, and some others. No offense but different people age differently, with some able to pull off a younger character age and some not able to, and it was time to think about letting MS go and recasting after a breather. I love Sharon and have always detested freaky Phyl, but how great it will be to see two of my favorite acting beauties in scenes together.

I congratulate TPTB at Y&R for choosing Gina Tognoni to be the new Phyllis. It’s inspired casting and after having watched Gina in her two other soap roles, I know she’ll eventually win over fans who aren’t familiar with her. She’s a powerhouse when those scenes are called for and she’s also extremely likeable.
Now if some brilliant casting director would just hire Florencia Lozano for just about any role — other than one on G.H. — long-time soap fans would be very happy! Why not G.H.? We’ve already seen her for years with Roger Howarth on OLTL and it would be better to pair her with someone new.
In the meantime, I wish Gina much success in her new role. Can’t wait to see her. However, once Phyllis wakes up for good, could someone please write Lily Ashby into a coma? We could all really do without her ranting, raving and accusing.

  56. Jared says:

Well, well, then. If not Michelle Stafford, why not? Great choice! Although the age difference is a little bit of a stretch, but we can just call it reverse SORAS’ing. LOL She was in a coma after all.

David Tom was talked up by the Y&R faithful and he’s turned out to be a total bust. Now this woman that is replacing Michelle Stafford is “all that and more”. It’s just hype, Let’s see how she performs in the role before the jury comes in with a verdict. The nuKelly isn’t that great so far, but give it time.

The next big hurdle for Y&R is now THE BIG ROLE: Adam Newman. Replacing Michael Muhney isn’t going to happen. He established the character and made him into the force on the show. A recast will be just that. If the reports that JFP went to Muhney with a proposal to return is true, then that is the best news the show could deliver. If Muhney returns, it just might pull Y&R out of the mess it has become.

I do disagree with you. No, David Tom is no Billy Miller but I would think it is impossible to replicate that intangible thing called chemistry. But David Tom has his own unique brand of charisma and acting talent and he is doing a stand up job of the role he originated. If you watch the Billy and Jack scenes, you will see that David Tom really is Billy Abbott. He just doesn’t seem to have chemistry with Victoria anymore–not his fault.

I wouldn’t have minded a while back if Phyllis had just died and not come back, I was so tired of the overexposure of the character in these past years, and frankly, I was more than tired of Michelle Stafford’s acting choices. But I think having the character back – if written well – could spice up the show. And Gina Tognoni is good. I thought her last performance as Kelly on OLTL was flat, but that IMO was due to the writing, and trying to make something of her pairing with Joey Buchanan – didn’t work for me.
But I think she might actually be able to make Phyllis relevant again. She has talent.

As for the age thing, I don’t pay that much attention. Especially on primetime, women always seem and look younger than their character’s chronological age. And with Daniel gone, and that actor most likely never returning, and the grandchild offscreen as well, it’s a moot factor at this point.

I’m just not excited about this : Y&R deserves to stay afloat

    too much has happened

I loved Dinah Marler on Guiding Light

Gina Tognoni, is and was a spitfire….

she had to amazing runs… on OLTL and GL… that was easily HER DOING.

Michelle Stafford is a HUGE unto herself…. WOW

it truly may be one of those times that a recast will ever work

think of even daring to replace : Jeanne Cooper
irreplaceable(s) : Billy Miller and Michael Muhney
    Michelle Stafford : Phyllis

    these 4 people ARE HUGE!

    repeating myself

I would have tuned in, had it been Robin Christopher… if the show has changed SO MUCH… almost too much…. to even be curious to consider giving the show a try again… it’s not in my interest, that GT has taken her place

I wish GH would rehire Robin Christopher with Lorenzo/Tomas’ daughter… and become a Quartermaine.

    I wish Gina Tognoni well

Congratulations Gina! She was terrific as Kelly Cramer on OLTL. CBS is smart to start hiring ABC soap actors. I have started watching Y and R, and I think “Dixie” is doing a great job in her new role. Sorry ABC, you dropped the ball by canceling OLTL and keeping GH. I never watched MS in this role, so I don’t care if she ever comes back. This will bring over more OLTL fans to CBS.

Especially with only 4 shows left. I’m sure every out of work daytime actress was busting the doors down to get this part. Personally I think it should have went to Victoria Wyndham (ex-Rachel Cory AW)..so what if she’s 70.

    christine milligan replied

She was a replacement on that show. I have watched her before as Kelly Cramer and thought she was great. My point was hello Dixie, hello Opal, hello Kelly. It’s a JFP thing. Both Cady & Gina are known for other roles. It would be easer on Y&R long time fans to go a little slower on ABC actors!!

    andrew hass replied

Whether Gina Tognoni was a replacement on Guiding Light or not she was still on it.Plus if the show hires TSJ to play Adam which some fans want i think i suppose you would have a problem with that because he was on OLTL?

Very true, plus Y&R has a lot of ex AMC stars – Chelsea, Chloe, Victoria, ex Billy, Rohan, ex-Heather.

Gina will be a great Phyllis. There will be no more embarrassing multiple repeats of words and phrases that MS heavily relied on, probably in part because she didn’t rehearse her lines, as is well known, although she does the exact same thing in her Web series and I think it’s just her crutch no matter what (I’ll have to tune in to GH to see if the director makes her stop). There will be no more wild flapping of the arms and screeching that results in spittle on others (like on Daisy in that argument scene when Phyl insisted on behavior that caused her miscarriage and Daisy’s actor wiped spit from her face). There will be no more ridiculous slapstick and a plastic character. Gina T will make Phyllis real and believable.

Y&R is the worst place for an actor to be stepping into a recasted role at the moment in my opinion. In the last 2 years the joke of new characters and recasted actors and the implantation of Hollywood Heights into the show has let down the once high calibre performing cast. These days its hit and miss. For the love of God, when are they going to put an EP into the role that ‘gets’ the show?
