From the moment daytime fans saw Tom Pelphrey on their screens as Jonathan Randall’s, Reva’s (Kim Zimmer) son on Guiding Light, they knew he had that “it” factor.  After winning two Daytime Emmys for his performance, and then moving over to As the World Turns to take on the role of Mick, Pelphrey left daytime to appear in motion pictures and primetime television and his sucesses have been mounting.   He recently starred in Cinemax’s Banshee.

Now comes word via Variety, perhaps of one of Pelphrey’s most exciting roles of all.   The talented actor has been cast in the highly-anticipated new Netflix series, Marvel’s Iron Fist.   Tom will be a series regular in the superhero series, where he will play the role of Ward Meachum.  Cast along with Pelphrey as his new on-screen sister is 90210′s Jessica Stroup who will play Joy Meachum.   David Wenham will play their father, Harold.

Pelphrey addresses his casting news on his Twitter page adding:  “So excited to be joining this team. Thanks for all of the support as always!!”

In story, Joy and Ward have spent their lives building Rand Enterprises to its current standing in the world, only to have all their work put in jeopardy when Danny returns to claim his birthright. They are childhood acquaintances of Danny Rand’s who now play an important role in Rand Enterprises.

Marvel’s Iron Fist follows Jones’ Danny Rand as he returns to New York City after being missing for years. He fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.  Finn Jones of Games of Thrones will play the title role in the series.

The first soap I got to miss was Texas which was a spinoff from Another World. That show had me glued to my screen every day and i got to meet some of the actors when they came to do guest appearances in my hometown of Plattsburgh, NY. Other soaps have joined the ranking like ATWT and it’s never a good feeling when we lose one of our families.

Tom has received stellar reviews since joining Cinemax’s Banshee. It’s been a real star making role. I’m sure it helped get him noticed for this new role. So happy for him.

Tom Pelphrey is one of my top 5 favorite actors in the entire history of daytime drama and one of the finest actors in any genre. I make it a practice to check him out in any role I can.

    Who are the other four?

Thanks for asking. They are: Michael Zaslow (Roger Thorpe, GL), Larry Bryggman (John Dixon, ATWT), Roger Howarth (Franco, GH, Todd OLTL et al), and Justin Deas (Buzz Cooper, GL et al). Pelphrey always reminded me of Zaslow in his ability to portray villainous actions while showing tremendous vulnerability. In fact, all 5 of these actors can claim that skill.

An excellent list. I was a GL and ATWT fan as well. What about the ladies?

Robin Strasser (Dorian, OLTL), Elizabeth Hubbard (Lucinda, ATWT), Beverly McKinsey (Alexandra, GL), Wendy Moniz (Dinah, GL) and Sarah Brown (Carly, GH). How about you, Mark? Any favorites?

    Mark Y replied

Another good list and I’d include them all. How about Victoria Wyndham AW, Ilene Kristen RH, Lisa Brown GL & ATWT, Mary Kay Adams GL & ATWT – could never look away when they were on screen.

Great choices. Soaps can feature some of the best acting in ANY genre. It’s interesting that when many of the soaps were produced in NYC they attracted many Broadway actors. Regardless of the sometimes poor or outlandish writing on soaps, the best actors commit to the material and make it rich and entertaining.

He is so hot, rugged and masculine. I loved watching Tom on Guiding Light. He is a terrific actor and sexy too. Tom and Kim Zimmer really loved working together, great chemistry together. I hope Kim Zimmer comes back to Daytime.

Thanks for saying it, Mandy. There are lots of pretty faces and fit bodies on daytime but not many with old-fashioned charisma and sex appeal, plus ferocious talent to go with it. Tom Pelphrey has it. For me, Roger Howarth and Billy Miller also have it. But it seems to be a rare combination and when you see it, you KNOW IT!
