34 January 9th, 2012 GMA Says Goodbye to One Life to Live – Watch the Video Segment!

Courtesy/ABC

One Life to Live finale week kicked off this morning when Good Morning America’s special correspondent, former All My Children star, Cameron Mathison along with GMA anchor, Robin Roberts, took a look back at the legacy of the 43-year-old soap complete with historic clips of the social issue storylines, gut-wrenching drama and interview clips with the current cast including: Kristen Alderson, Jerry verDorn, Kassie DePaiva, Ilene Kristen, Tuc Watkins, and Erika Slezak.

You can see some of this was shot during breaks from the fantastic Fraternity Row fantasy episode, but in the end, we are sure you may get a bit misty as it’s all coming to its conclusion in five days. Watch the video segment after the jump and let us know what you thought of the piece.

I thought it was good also, just not long enough. Plus it was shoved towards the end of the show.

I thought the segment was complete BS! They call that a tribute. It was not even five minutes, how do they call that a tribute. As much as I love Cameron, he should not have been reprensenting One Life, someone from One Life should have! They said One Life was ending, seriously ABC … stop with the Half truths.

Right. OLTL is being murdered. NOT ending.

4 minutes and 31 seconds ,thats it? one life to live has been on 43 years and abc gives gma 4 minutes and 31 seconds .for what ? those cheep bastards.

I’m sure the Emmys will be just as bad, probably worse. Look what they did to Guiding Light. They showed a minute or two of clips and then just had the cast bow and then cut to commercial break quickly after. No respect for the soaps. Ugh.

    Gloria replied

They might as well not even have the Emmys anymore. What is the point? Last year’s was the worst I’ve ever seen.

    Scott. replied

Get over it. Sorry. But GL/ATWT got less than two minutes at the Emmys; GL yes got a late night special but ATWT got nothing. They weren’t cheap, AMC didn’t even get this GMA segment.

ok.Im just saying ,the soaps any of them deserve more time then ANY of them got.And right now abc is getting hell for it ,cause there taking off a perfectly good show ,that does get good ratings, but abc would rather put cheap programing on in place of good entertainment.AND 4 minutes and 31 seconds is an insult ,maybe not to you ,but to me,and Im sure that I am not alone in what I am saying.scott I think you like to argue, thtas ok ,so do I .

    Lisa replied

They devote more time pushing the people of The Chew at us than they gave to OLTL. GMA has become little more than tabloid TV anyway and most mornings I end up tuning out. This so-called “tribute” and Friday’s installment of The View are no doubt the network’s way of appeasing the fans—-just more proof that ABC has lost touch with what used to be its audience.

gloria, you are right about those emmys, last year was the worst ever ,cbs put on a show with everyone but the abc soap people ,also a non stop ads for there show ,it was very one sided.and I will never understand why one life to live is never picked best soap ,best actress best actor,Remember when kassie depava did a live show, she didnt miss a beat, and carried most of the show, why she didnt get an emmy that year,we will never know ,unless one life to live is up for an award,Ill pass on watching, when they ignore one life to live they are insulting me ,I know what I have watched for 43 years ,and its the best, should have received a lot of emmys over all those 43years.

Somehow I knew that it was going to be like that. I recorded it, and when I got home and pressed play on the DVR I had to fast forward past 1hr and 47 minutes of GMA….just to get 4 minutes of a “Tribute” for OLTL. After 43 years that’s all they get. Even though I never pressed play on the other stuff, I saw that Beyonce seemed to be heavily featured. I understand that her having a baby may be big news for a lot of people….but I think the cancellation of OLTL is bigger. ABC just proves again how much they suck.

It was fun to see the clips and hear from the stars… but a tribute it was not! It was a commercial to watch this week… nothing more. So sad that ABC just doesn’t care how much we all care about these shows. I am still hoping someone will save OLTL… but it won’t be because of this commercial.

GMA’s so called tribute was lousy. After 43 years, you’d think that they could come up with something better. They could have had some of the actors on to talk about the show and its legacy. I am still hoping that somehow OLTL can continue in some way. I know many are trying to fight for it. I hope it succeeds somehow. I’ve watched since I was in college in 1978 and to have it just disappear for a lousy talk show makes me sick. OLTL was pure escapism for me. I loved the characters, the actors, all of it all these many years and I a truly heartbroken to see it go away. I envision a new show on TV Land featuring the actors starring in a show about this very situation, a lot of acotrs out of a job due to the cancellation of a long running soap opera. TV Land is making their own good programs now. I’d love to write a synopsis and a script for it if I could. We could still have these actors we’ve come to know and love in our lives. Call me crazy, but I can dream!

Gosh almighty Cameron Mathinson’s voice is like taking fingernails on a chalkboard. And we could not get a OLTL veteran to do this? Once again they stepped in it!

Mathison is WAY overrated in my opinion & was part of the reason I got tired of AMC. He has nothing to to with OLTL. James DePaiva would have been great for the “tribute” on GMA.

Glad I’m not alone on that one. I’m so sick of seeing Cameron Mathinson be “The Voice of Daytime.” Could they not get one of the OLTL actors to do this…..I mean it is a completely different show from AMC. And am I the only one to notice how ABC did a much better job of promoting AMC finale than they have done for OLTL?

I totally agree. He’s all about himself (and I’m an AMC fan). They think he’s cute, but he was not on AMC that long. If they want someone as a spokesperson of other starts they need someone who was on longer, and someone who is not just out for themselves. I think Tuc Watkins would be a good spokesperson and he’s funny, or Kassie DePaiva, Robin Strasser, etc.

That’s a tribute… 4 minutes and 31 seconds. Well thanks ABC and GMA. I guess you thought one minute was worth a decade’s worth of exceptional work. But I guess you were being kind to give us an extra 30 seconds for the last six months. Once again, OLTL gets treated like it has always been in the past — ABC red headed stepchild.

At first, I wanted to watch, but I decided not to because I’m boycotting ABC, Disney and any affiliated companies/advertisers. It seems a little hypocritical that the network wanted to pay tribute to our beloved ONE LIFE TO LIVE after they so mercilessly, without regard for the fans, murdered its number one soap opera.

I was extremely disappointed. It seemed to be more about Cam Mathison’s closeups and feelings than about One Life to Live. There were not true interviews. I frankly thought it was a tease for fans to watch, but awful as far as being called a tribute. I hate ABC.

  14. Carol says:

I agree, the tribute was disappointing although that’s not Mathison’s fault. He does occasional segments for GMA and since he is a soap actor from a cancelled soap he was an appropriate choice. He was emotional at the end and that meant something to me. The cancellation of OLTL leaves a hole in my heart. I will miss the core characters and feel like I am losing some of my best friends. I have watched for over 30 years and it will be so hard to say goodbye. I never thought this would happen and I am so angry at ABC. I hope that OLTL finds a home somewhere else. If not, I just want to thank the actors…you will never be forgotten.

Send your SOAP BAR’S to the Abc studio in NYC and show your fustration, by BOMBARDING THEM with soap, which is arriving from all across the United States and Canada. WE NEED to do this so that it can MAKE the News, and draw public support……!!!!!! And put the Revolution show out of work BC of No viewership! So “we” CANT SAY, “HeY, it’s enough people sending soap, I dont have to.” No, ” WE ALL” have to do it..! Cameron Maddison (Ryan) eyes teared up this morning on ‘Good Morning American’ after he Narrated the Histroy of OLTL, and this wasn’t EVEN his show. (I will always Respect you Cameron, You R a Class Act, and TRUST, I remember that you were the 1st to sign up for Prospect Park, and U made it a public announcement b4 AMC ended). 1. By EVERYONE sending soap to Abc studio’s, 2. PLUS, canceling our Cable and getting the DISH (homeowner’s) so that Disney CAN’T profit from their Channels on cable. (None home owners, MUST NOT have their channels on that network from 1 to 3pm. In Fact, find another NOON news to watch, JUST IN CASE you walk away from the TV when the Noon news goes off, and then your channel is on abc by default. Change the channel well in advance. 3. Sign the Petition which is going around on Facebook, and 4. WRITE other networks (Channel 4 who expressed an interest, OR another cable network YOU FEEL that could stand a BOOST in their ratings, from picking up OLTL and AMC. Hey guys, 5. We HAVE TO BE RELENTLESS with this, AND DO IT for THE REST OF THIS WEEK, and CONTINUE IT LONG AFTER….. THE SHOW ENDS, TO SHOW THAT….. THESE 2 SOAPS STILL HAVE AN AUDIENCE and their is MONEY STILL to be MADE from these 2 shows.
Doing ALL 4 of these things is going to be News worthy. KEEP IT IN THE NEWS, and some Network will pay attention and RESPOND, but the FIGHT CANNOT STOP!!!! CANNNNNNOT!!!!!

This is such a mockery! ABC deserves to collapse into HELL!!! I am so devastated. My grandpa is probably rolling in his grave right now, seeing his soaps slaughtered like this! They don’t even give the soaps the proper send off that they deserve. I am praying that someone will somehow throw us a lifeline and resurrect our soaps after ABC throws them away like trash. Maybe the Mayans were right…All I can think now is that the world really is going to end in 2012, and God just wants us to see what the end is going to be like before armageddon. I can’t imagine a world w/o my stories in it. Oh well when I am not watching old episodes on youtube, I guess I’ll be seeing storylines in my dreams. I wonder if there are other people who have dreamed their own storylines in their dreams like I have. That is how much I love them. I wish all of the actors/actresses all the best.

It’s so good to hear what other fans of OLTL are feeling. I am just miserable & I think ABC is despicable. Who cancels TWO long-running soaps in one day – and they weren’t the two lowest rated? General Hospital’s ratings haven’t been as high as OLTL’s for a long time. I think they just have a pick against Agnes Nixon, since both were her creations.

I thought I’d be watching my beloved “One Life to Live” for years to come…But, OK, ABC, you will NEVER have the loyal viewers that you had for years with soap fans. Thanks to the cast & crew for years of fantastic work. We love you.

What is the big deal about the self appointed spokesman for OLTL on the morning news. Whoever decided that one must nuts. His voice is not even good enough to be an actor. We fans that tuned in to see a tribute of OLTl got seriously taken in by a promotion that never panned out. This is like when Oprah had a show about soap stars and paraded them out and she neglected Tony Geary and Genie Francis after she introduced them. That was it! A lot of hype and no return. But it was all about Susan Lucci with Oprah mooning all over her. Puhleese!…It’s like take a bow and disappear…The stars of OLTL got jipped and so did we .I went back to bed!

    1loveabcsoaps replied

Doe: Did we really get JIPPED or what? I wrote about this yesterday. But here is the reason we got jipped, taken in by Good Morning America. First of all, GMA is always 2nd in the ratings to NBC Morning show. So they wanted to BEAT nbc in the ratings, IF ONLY for a day. GMA knows that OLTL has STRONG AUDIENCE SUPPORT, and following. So they tried to capatiliz on that, and for their ratings. BUT they didn’t have ENOUGH finest to do it RIGHT, giving the viewers a real Tribute. It was pre-taped, no live OLTL stars talking, or even narrating the show. Some people are pissed that Cameron (Ryan) narrated the show bc he was a OLTL cast member. Ok. I understand why some felt that way, very understandable. Should have been a OLTL cast member. But in Cameron’s (Ryan’s) defense, he AT LEAST was AS emotional for OLTL as he was for AMC. (never saw tear’s from him for his show). Cameron had tears to his eyes, which made it NOT ABOUT HIM, but about the genre. As far as Susan on Oprah. Well, Susan is the face of Daytime, and the most popular, and I concure/agree with you that TOO much time was spent on her, BC Genie and Tony are equally as SIGNIFICANT to Daytime as she. She has never had the ratings success as they have, or carried her show, as they on GH. But Michael Fairman in his interview with Genie (if U read it) Genie felt Oprah handled the interview fine, and even done her good/some service, by allowing her to speak about what she ‘does not’ want to play anymore, and then explaine why, and made sure it wasn’t cut for the final airing. I dont know if you watched ” Behind the Scenes with Oprah/ her finale season”, on the OWN network BUT Susan actually cancelled for the 1st tapping of Oprah, bc of the snow storm (Can’t fault her there). Some people had already flown out, and everyone was still committed to going/ taking an early flight before the storm got bad. Susan wasn’t flying, and so Oprah’s staff had to call all the other talent (the other soap stars) and have them to come a day or so later BC Susan wasn’t flying out, or the star’s that were already there had to be held up in their hotels for until Susan came. They said (Oprah’s staff) “there is no show without Susan, BC she is the face of Daytime.” I think Opah’s show should have been two days long bc Erika Slezak should have been there along with, Maurice Benard Sonny and Brenda, Venessa Marcil. There has NEVER been a soap couple like those two, but Luke and Laura. But anyone who watched Sonny and Brenda know’s ……that Sonny and Brenda win’s that in terms of BURNING UP THE T.V SCREEN. These were 2 beautiful people, with dark features, dimples, and GREAT chemistry displaying young love, on a different scale as Luke and Laura. That was the whole reason why abc made such a big deal about Brenda returning, in terms of advertising. They should have been at Oprah’s show. I didn’t feel that Opah handled the guest “take a bow and disappear” (read Genie’s interview on this site). Well AT LEAST not with the other Soap Stars Oprah interviewed. BUT I DO kinda feel that way (take a bow and disapear) with ALL of Susan Lucci’s (Erica’s) husbands that showed up. They never sat down as guest, and they ALL didn’t personally speak (given flying out for the show and being held up in a hotel waiting for Susan, remember THEY were a surprise for her). They were along lined up for minutes and then was GONE. That show should have been for 2 days. Those men should have been treated as guest, not pawns. But taking into consideration this was Oprah’s finale season, I’m sure the schedule was already set months in advance, with people on Oprah’s rouster she wanted to talk to before her year ended. Write Good Morning America and complain. Thanks for listening. Goodnite.
