A big congratulations are in order today to ABC’s All My Children. While the soap celebrates its 40th anniversary officially tomorrow on January 5th, ( things kicked off in Pine Valley back in January 5, 1970) it’s celebrating big-time with a special two part episode that airs today and tomorrow bringing lots of your favorites back to name Pine Valley “The Best Town in America.” But while AMC has had its ups, and in more recent time, real downs, there have been some amazing storylines, moments, and social issues that had been part of the shows cornerstone. From Erica’s original “abortion”, to Phil going to Vietnam, to Cindy dying of AIDS, to Bianca’s coming out story and the first same-sex wedding on daytime, to Iraqi vet JR Martinez, AMC has touched upon many a hot topic.
And the romance! Phil and Tara Brent were the original supercouple of AMC back in the 70′s, and the spoiler of course was a young Erica Kane! The romances of Dimitri and Erica, Edmund and Maria, Hayley and Mateo, Nina and Cliff, Greg and Jenny, Jesse and Angie, Phoebe and Langley, Tad and Dixie, Trevor and Natalie, Zach and Kendall, Julia and Noah and Leo and Greenlee, also had fans at times on the edge of their seats, and shedding tears of joy and sorrow.
But ah, those villains! Vanessa, Cobra, Billy Clyde Tuggle, David Hayward, Michael Cambias, Greg Madden, Dr. Kinder, Ray Gardner, and many more that put their stamp on the poor citizens of P.V. that some never recovered and some of the above never did either, as they were “killed-off” which launched many a murder mystery for their crimes and behavior.
To the storylines: these are some of On-Air On-Soaps most memorable favorites: Brooke’s daughter, Laura dies, Myrtle’s funeral, Mona dies, Bianca’s coming out, The Miranda Baby Switch, The Maria baby switch (Erica took her!), Leo dies, Cindy dies of AIDS, Erica’s Alcholism/rape… and her brother Mark’s drug addiction, Donna and Estelle in the clutches of Billy Clyde Tuggle, and any moment of the wildly entertaining Ruth Warrick as Phoebe Tyler Wallingford, and don’t forget…Carol Burnett as Verla Grubbs!
