145 March 27th, 2015 Is Ian Buchanan On His Way Out At General Hospital?

This morning rumors are flying after a tweet from TV Guide’s Magazine‘s Michael Logan made it across the Twitterverse.  In it, he comments that he heard that long time fan favorite, Ian Buchanan (Duke) may be on his way out at General Hospital!

According to the tweet Logan posted:  “SO WRONG I’m hearing Ian Buchanan out at #GH in dire plot twist. ABC PR says ‘No comment. Fantastic actor. Legacy character. Poor decision.”

Given that Buchanan has been underutilized, and his romance with Anna (Finola Hughes) has hit a snag, does it make sense to kill off Duke to propel story?

Currently, Duke is serving as head of the Corinthos crime family per proxy from Sonny (Maurice Benard), and the mob wars are revving up once again against the Jerome organization.  Federal Agent Anna Devane now finds herself caught in a situation where she could potentially have to put her ex into prison stripes.

Share your thoughts if Ian was to exit GH below!  Is this a big mistake to let him go?

Bad decision. I think there are a dozen actors who should be written out over Ian. Can’t stand the Nina, and Franco nonsense. I’ve felt like Billy Miller has been wasted, the story has flopped. Billy Miller joining GH just hasn’t created the buzz like some people would have hoped. I don’t watch GH everyday anymore, and it is because making bad decisions like this. Ian Buchanan has no doubt been wasted. If they wanna kill anyone kill Kiki.

Robert…y-e-s…I, oh so, agree with you here!!!!! Ever since GH re-cast the role of Kiki, the character of Kiki (for me) has become EVEN MORE UNWATCHABLE…BEYOND B-L-E-C-H!!!!! Bottom Line Here: I think that killing off Kiki would be one of GH’S BETTER DECISIONS…PERIOD!!!!!!

I like Kiki as well. I enjoy the actress. Not the scheming. But she’s lovely. Ian Buchanan is magnetic! Class act. A+! An amazing asset. He makes the intolerable, boring, played out mob wars somewhat watchable. This is not setting well with me!

    Leo replied

Get rid of Nathan Parsons, Kirsten Storms, Emme Rylan, Dominic Zamprogna, heck even Anthony Geary before getting rid of the downright enchanting Ian Buchanan.

    Harry replied

The new actress playing Kiki is HORRID and one noteish! I had no idea anyone thought otherwise. Sometimes I just make assumptions and think we’re all on the same page–like I just assume everyone hates Thomas Kinkaid paintings, Fifty Shades of Grey, Justin Bieber and Scientology, and I am appalled to learn that not everyone hates the aforementioned the way I do.
But I digress, this new actress is constantly smirking and rolling her eyes acting like the mean girl at the cafeteria table rather than the emotionally conflicted young woman dealing with the death of her mother, concern with her little sister and finally, with engaging in a heinous plan to hurt.
They should get rid of this Heather, as well as Sparkle Pony, Robocop, Giddy Reptile Woman (Nina) and Justin Bieber.

    AJQ replied

Well Robert I’m with you on Franco and Nina. Maybe TPTB have a strategy to write enough GH vets and excellent actors like Sean Kanan and Ian Buchanan horribly enough that they’ll either quit or so they can justify killing them off. Then with them gone, those who haven’t been drinking the Kool Aid that Roger Howarth is some great actor, will finally come around because there is no one left.

Ian is a fantastic actor when given good material and he built a great character in Duke and fans were thrilled when he came back to reprise that role except his presence was just a way to rope fans in of course and then underutilize him.

It’s too bad. Duke having a major role, together again with Anna, if she was also written well as the kick ass spy she is, would restore some quality and should I dare say even some dignity to the show. Instead we suffer through a bunch of OOT lunatics and are supposed to pretend along that sticking your tongue out, pretending to eat popcorn and lighting your hair on fire is great acting and great character development.

Killing Duke Lavery would just be more evidence that Cartini have such contempt for the fans who were here long before them and are determined to wipe what GH was off the map and continue to create a playground for their friends and OLTL viewers who followed them here. At some point, long time viewers will finally stop watching out of loyalty and habit and they will be in deep trouble because they aren’t attracting new viewers.

    Harry replied

I agree with you, AJQ, as well as with the rest of you who believe this is a huge mistake. Many folks give up to Cartini for bringing back the vets. But he brings them back in such a condescending way as if to trot out a relic from the past and say,”Look at me! Ain’t I grand?” Then he just puts them back in the attic or the mental asylum or worse yet, he kills them off.
The writing afforded to Ian has been truly dreadful and getting rid of him is not admission of his defeat, but rather, admission of Cartini’s defeat.

    Timmm replied

Amen Robert! Billy Miller is a BUST! He needs to go back on Y&R where he played a great character and they know how to write for him!

    Shay replied

No, Timmm…I beg to differ! Billy is not a bust, but the dragged out storyline leading up to the reveal of his true identity is what qualifies for that description. How many more times must we see him injured and hospitalized, thrown in jail, hanging out with one of his harem trio of leading ladies or just standing around looking utterly bewildered (very cute, by the way, but also utterly bewildered!) before he has a major mental breakthrough and/or the right someone gets a clue as to the fact he is really Jason? I’ve read that this won’t happen before November…and in the meantime, we shall have to suffer through yet another awful newbie character—Hayden— whose sole purpose for existing is simply to throw a monkey wrench in Jake’s recovery. Until Miller is finally allowed to discover his character’s inner self, then I don’t see how can we can fairly judge his success or failure in this recast, although I will say I like him just fine, thus far….I’m merely impatient for his role to be further developed.

    CeeCee replied

I’ll take anybody over Burgess, Timmm.

    Michael (not Fairman) replied

Putting aside whether Miller is or isn’t cutting it as Jake/Jason, I wouldn’t bet money on Charles Pratt writing him material that did his talents any justice as Billy Abbott, even if he did go back to Y&R. They might have known how to write for him in the past, but I wouldn’t be so sure about the present.

I like him as Jake/Jason. Having watched him on Y&R, I think it’s interesting how he’s toned down (quite a bit) his natural sparkle to better match the far more subdued (as in catatonic) affect of the character Steve Burton created. And yet some of it still comes through, and this Jason (Jake) actually has some life to him (not to mention chemistry galore with just about everyone he interacts with). I’m actually interested in him. Hadn’t been able to say that about the Steve Burton version in at least 10 years.

    Harry replied

Timm, I agree the big Jason reveal has been a bust but I don’t think it’s Miller’s fault. It’s like they are trying to make his story as boring and as lackluster as possible.

    Corine replied

I agree…Billy is not a bust, but his storylines suck. Quit bringing soap stars from other shows, as there are plenty of GH regulars to use. Thank God, Carly can sniff a fake in Jake’s so-called wife.
Re-cast of Kiki is ho-hum at least. The Luke story line has become boring to say the least.
Give Tracy Q her balls back – she was better being evil. Michael calling his baby sister AJ is pathetic.

The Franco/Nina storyline is over unless the writing gets better – do like the chemistry behind the two. DO NOT WANT TO SEE JAMES FRANCO back on GH.

Great to see Spinelli back. Need to get Diane and Max back together. Need more of Alice. There plenty of quirky side characters to rolling again.

Don’t like the chemistry of Patrick and Sam but not in mood to see Robin return. Always love seeing Helena and her twisted crap. Love Spence – he is such an old soul -so dramatic.

Will miss Ian Buchanan if he is indeed leaving. If this is AG’s Luke last revival before leaving..hope the “BIG” reveal is worth all the bs we have seen lately.

    Patrick replied

    nuKiki can be gone

Alexis/Nancy would have all the appeal in the world as a stand-up comedic fake-attorney. I would definitely go see her, but with a buttoned-down shirt, up to her neck.

    Shay replied

Oh, amen and hallelujah to that thought, Patrick (and CeeCee, too!) Diane Miller, Esq. is just the most feisty and fabulous female legalista—evah! As the feminine answer to Perry Mason, she needs to immediately be returned to the Port Charles courtroom in all her professional pinstriped panache, along with the beloved Max on her curvaceous coattails. Those two showed the fun and frolic of “adult love” without the sleazy spectacle that always seems to accompany the tawdry Alexis and her paramours.

    Shay replied

Now, now, CeeCee…mummified? Not quite. Botoxed to within an inch of his life? (Yes.) Embalmed? (Perhaps.) But not mummified….have a little mercy, Girl! LOL….As for Duke’s lackluster persona, I blame the writers….first he languished in a Turkish prison for decades, then he did likewise in Port Charles after his initially warm welcome. The poor man never had much of a storyline to speak of….he was chronically unemployed and basically served as Anna’s “walker” for the past few years….he definitely deserved better than having to fall back to his life of crime. And so did she!

Duke has amazing fashion sense but lousy Kingpin sense. They had him boasting to everyone in town that he was replacing Sonny as the head of the family. In proper mob culture, you don’t tell chicks you’re trying to hit on that you’re the new secret, super dooper new Kingpin in town. That would be like Deep Throat telling the waitress that he’s Deep Throat.
That said, I love Ian–think he was mis used, underused and exploited.
If you want to see how good he can be, look up a younger Duke with Anna on Youtube. What they could have had and did not the second time around does make me feel a little sad.

    Shay replied

‘Tis true, Harry…Duke embodies all that is missing in current-day soap leading men….elegance, sartorial splendor, an erudite, old-fashioned quality and sense of chivalry…he is a supreme gentleman, and I applaud that. But sadly, nobody at GH knows how to deal with a character with such admirable traits, as these notions are completely foreign to them. Hence, we end up with the greatly diminished man currently inhabiting Port Charles. On top of that, despite the much-wished for magic that we had hoped to see between Sir Duke and his Lady Anna, lightning did not strike twice…sad, but true….sometimes you can’t go back. There seems to be such a chasm between these two…not just of communication, but of age…sadly, since Ms. Devane is just too vital and youthful for this past-his-prime male….although I still believe there was a place for this courtly character on the show. I would have paired him with Monica, Tracy, even Donna Mills….which would have made for a classy coupling and with Ms. Quartermaine, it would have spared her the immense indignity of the Fluke fiasco. (Not to mention, what fun would it have been for Lavery to join romantic forces with Dr. O’s “Swiss Sis?” What irony…) Having said that, I remain grateful for IB’s return…it was initially a great thrill while it lasted, and I do so hate to see it end with a sad whimper….rather a repeat of the deplorable AJ debacle, yet it should be interesting to see if this actor goes quietly or the more outspoken way of Sean Kanan.

    Rebecca1 replied

Hi Harry…perhaps you can point out that the stunning Ian Buchanan is 57… Only two years older than Finola…and that the suggested ladies he could have been paired with are in their 70s…or close.

Anna and Duke still could have been the dashing, stunning, romantic couple they once were if the writers brought him back to life…since they killed every piece of vibrancy he possessed. It isn’t that he looks or is old…it’s that they gave him no fire…like it was an effort for him to turn his head…which created the illusion of a talking mannequin. I think they should send him off to a spa…then send him straight back to Port Charles all revved up, rockin his kilts and ready to win back his lady love. Anna and her dashing, debonair Duke…it would be too tragic to kill him off…And then there were none….

Duke’s character doesnt interest me anymore but that because of the writing—RCs main interest is to write in a new characters to drag out his no-where-to-go storylines of Fluke and Fakeson(new character posed as Jakeson and now blackmailing Ric)—RC does seem to care about the shows history but only when it interest him—he’s like a little kid who quickly tires of one toy and moves on to the next—or like an adult who has to have the newest cell phone everytime a new version comes out while the old one he has is still good enough!!!…jmho

These comments dont mean i hate GH—i just hate what they do with certain characters—we have a front burner story with Jakeson but his stepmother Monica isnt shown—when Micheal won custody of Avery it was Monica who convinced her boyfriend-Judge 4et his name-to award Micheal custody—of course this was done off camera, and RC took the easy way out by simply creating this judge soley for the custody hearing and not for a long term relationship storyline for Monica—i would have made this judge Valerie’s father to tie him to both the Qs and Spencers families—as for Duke he could have been a good guy secretly working undercover, he couldve briefly dated Monica, and be looking for the child he thought he and Anna lost but is really still alive—speaking of Anna is FH off doing other things or on vacation because she is rarely seen—drop this Sloane character which has became a waste of airtime and make Anna commisioner once again???

Right, jimh? Alexis is a hypocrite. Firstly, she decides to break it off with Julian because of his unsavory lifestyle, yet her tawdry urges got the upper hand.
Julian falls under the same category. I could not believe my ears when he made a negative comment on the fact that Franco was free. Is he kidding? Writers??????? Are we to completely forget Julian is a mobster? …classic case of calling the kettle black. At least, stupid excuse or not, Franco had a reason for doing what he did.
I guess it must have been Julian who met Victor Newman in the confessional. They absolved each other of all sins.

I agree Jim, you have to be fair with your soap fans and tell credible stories or at least have the right people around who would be around in the real world. Monica not being in any scenes with Jake. Come on, a mother would see through this BS! Fans are tired of Fluke but I am more frustrated/disgusted with the utilization of Billy Miller. BUST!

    Jimmy replied

I agree that the writing for Duke hasn’t been good, and that’s the same with most GH vets currently on canvas. We barely get to see Scott, Lucy, Mac, Felicia and we’re only seeing Bobbie more now because of the Fluke story. I think GH needs to refocus its stories on more vets once this Fluke ordeal (and Jason reveal) is over. In the meantime, if GH wants to kill of characters, go with ones that don’t matter and don’t contribute to story, like Sabrina, Carlos, Jordan, Shawn, etc.

    Hey jimh,
I cannot judge Ian’s acting ability or his relationship with Anna of long ago. I had never seen him before GH, who appeared as Faison wearing a Duke mask. All I can do is base my like or dislike on Ian’s representation of Duke as he is today. I do not like what I see….all around. He is creepy to me; that’s all.
I would rather be entertained by an off-the-wall Faison and the crazed look in his eyes than the stodgy, old fogie that is Duke. I loved The Christopher Lloyd’s , (BACK TO THE FUTURE) crazy-hair-look on Faison…made me laugh watching the different looney expressions cross his face.
As I said, I did not know Anna and Duke as a couple in the past. But, in present , for myself, there is no good space for Duke in Anna’s life. A typical sexual interlude between these two would be….” Oh, yes, my deah Anna. Right theah, …yes m’deah…..spot on. Do not move…m’dear. Do I have permission to kiss you? Touch you?”
I do not like Sloane, but, there is something very much alive between him and Anna. I sense these electric vibes between them. The writers should work on that feeling. Anna and Sloane ( is that his first or last name?) should really fall for each other, I mean HARD. A torrid, stormy, can’t-help-ourselves kind of love affair devastating both their lives. Anna would know that he is all wrong for her, but her desire for him is stronger than her sense of right or wrong…she suspects him as a criminal, yet, she throws caution to the wind.
Then, when all is said and done, Anna discovers that Sloane is indeed an honest lawman. Hurray!!

How did I do, Jimh? You are so good at devising plot lines ….is mine a little plausible? LOL.

I do like your version of it(i forget Sloanes first name)—the way you put it makes me almost like creapy Sloane—maybe he will be Haydens ex husband to give her more ties to the show—i did like the original Sloane better—the current Sloane is so creapy it makes me wonder—Is this Faison in another mask—he did have his shirt off so maybe he is wearing a fake body too…lol…yes, your version is very plausible!!!

    Timmm replied

Duke was a replacement for Robert in Anna’s life. Duke was okay but they never really sizzled. Now that Duke is out they are trying Anna with Sloan. He is horrible. Why does everyone have to be hooked up? Give Anna a break and let her bring Sloan down. Bring Robert back and have them reunite the way it should be.

  4. Jimmy says:

I think this would be an absolute mistake. Ian Buchanan is a great actor, and yes he’s being woefully underutilized, but that’s the case with many great actors on GH – John J. York being another prime example. GH shouldn’t kill Duke off, if they want casualties in the mob war to propel story, Jordan and Carlos are the two characters I would go with first. Duke IS a legacy character, and if they aren’t planning to write story for him, they should usher him off in a way that allows him to return in the future – without another back-from-the-dead story.

That would be “Lazy Soap Writing 101,” su. Good soap writers avoid it as much as possible, and the very best know how to tell a compelling story without resorting to it. And that’s always been the case.

However, things have gotten a lot harder since the network executives became so involved in the storytelling. I’m at least willing to consider the possibility that what used to be a sign of laziness is now a sign of “doing what you have to, to keep the bosses happy and stay employed.” There’s a reason why major talents like Claire Labine, Nancy Curlee, and the Dobsons won’t work in soaps anymore. (I’d include Harding Lemay in that group but he’s in his 90s now so I guess there might be other reasons.) And why Agnes Nixon “retired” earlier than I think she planned to.

Regarding Duke specifically: Ian Buchanan, when they write him something worth playing, really brings something special to the screen. Killing Duke off for cheap plot advancement smacks of another bad decision of the caliber of letting Sean Kanan/AJ go. I guess we’ll see.

  5. Blbtmblues says:

He has been wasted shamelessly since his return. For Duke and Anna to be split up is a slap in the face it the writers that created and made GH the powerhouse that it was. Ian Buchanan is a wonderful actor and the chemistry with Finola Hughes is irreplaceable. Very sad to see him go.

Duke is a character. Please keep that in mind. I do not share your nostalgia because I am not of that era. I do not like him. It is that simple. Is it imperative for me to like him? I have the choice of liking and disliking anyone I choose. You came right out of left field, Maria. Who are you?
Most importantly, Duke is a mobster….I do not have any sympathy for his ilk.
There are actors/actresses who DO retire, you know? They are normal people who do normal things. Perhaps it is his choice to leave, if he is leaving.

    rebecca1 replied

    Hi Maria Vallone…

Yes! I completely agree. It’s very maddening when fans who are recent to the show dismiss a character that has great history/importance to GH. While of course it is within anyone’s right to like or dislike a character…the assumptions made and criticism of such a beloved character is infuriating when they speak of the character with such authority. Same was said when Helena returned…who is this “old” skeletal woman…not knowing what an important villain she’s been on the canvas for years on and off…

Duke/Ian is such a romantic lead. The story of Anna and Duke is so rich in nostalgia…to bring him back and under utilize him…barely have him share screen time with Anna…never really bring them back together…was a question mark from the beginning. After Anna got over her revulsion and association of Faison’s Duke mask…after making us wait for her to finally be able to let herself love Duke again…nothing happened! We saw them as “grandparents” with Emma…I don’t remember any romantic scenes between then this time around.

To kill off another much loved character, one that many were so happy to have return, is ridiculous. I’m assuming Anna will be grief-stricken and eventually wind up in Sloane’s arms…only to find out how shady he is…working with Helena, tampering with mayoral results, threatening Jake/Jason if he doesn’t cooperate…(which makes no sense because I can’t believe J/J would EVER be convicted considering he had an implanted chip and was not acting of his own volition…)

So pissed they’ve killed off Duke. Another AJ-like travesty.

  11. rebecca1 says:

Terrible news! So loved Duke back in the day and was so thrilled that he was back on the show. But we have rarely seen him; he was involved with AJ and the relish escapade…I actually would have liked a strong friendship to have formed between AJ and Duke…he was seen as Emma’s pseudo grandpa, barely seen with Anna with absolutely zero romance/passion/chemistry…which I blame on the writers. He was always so dashing, charming, yet with a hint of danger…and gorgeous. He’s been so mellow and blah through this entire run, it’s as if he came back with a lobotomy! IF they decide to put his character on hold I hope it’s in prison, at least there’ll be a chance of return. No to his demise, please. Just an eventual return complete with personality and a good storyline!

So they go to all the trouble of resurrecting Duke, give him NO good storyline, no good purpose, make him a ruthless mobster (at least the last time he “died” he was a hero), now they’re gonna kill him off without ever giving him a real reason to be there .. this is the fault of the writers, who hired Ian for “stunt casting”, then didn’t know what to do with him. Good writers would have been able to come up with a good story. Now they’re probably gonna pair Anna with Sloane – ugh! She’s my girl, but I am going to have to FF her if she’s with that sleazebag.

Hmmmm, I am sorry, Rose, for my lack of delicacy here, but your comment hits below the belt. I am not from the era of which you are speaking, but I do appreciate romance and class. Not everyone of my generation hits the sack, as you suggest, on the first date. I, for one, do not believe in that. What you say is not fair to those who do not engage in such behavior; or that romance is a thing of the past. My husband is so very romantic, he puts Gable, Peck, Valentino and all those guys to shame…LOL.
I suppose you don’t read my posts…..specifically about Alexis and Sam….who are definitely not of my generation or the present one.
I have a sixteen-year-old sister….she does not engage in Internet dating. She is a smart, gorgeous, good girl who dates boys her own age, but has self respect and a head on her shoulders, for one so young. So, at the risk of sounding rude, you need to be a little more mindful of what you write. There are a few of us , on this site, under thirty.

Wow, you have a very low opinion of today’s youth. Please keep in mind that our society is in the hands of our youth. Give them the encouragement and praise they deserve. Times change, but people basically stay the same, with good values and/or lack-there-of. It depends on the person what his/her idea of fun is….it has always been thus. Good and evil is not a new concept belonging only to this generation either…….it started in the Garden of Eden.

Hi Rose…I understood what you were trying to say…I responded to you under that post. There are indeed different age groups on this site…and different opinions. It’s ironic you were called out on what you said because it was much less offensive than a certain younger poster who, on almost every post alludes to Alexis as being too old to be sexual, to dress a certain way and who should be home knitting (at her age). And…gasp…to this poster she shouldn’t be doing these things because she’s…57!!!! (this poster asks…doesn’t Nancy Graham realize she’s so close to 60?) She’s also said that Carly and Sonny shouldn’t be all over each other…again…not because of their passion, but because they’re not young….

My point is it seems the offender has taken offense. I guess it’s easier to see only one side of the coin. Insulting older characters and older viewers…insinuating what they should or shouldn’t be doing because they’re “too old” is okay. But your view was offensive. It wasn’t.

Right now pop-culture and the tech industry is full of relatively instant fame and $’s without knowing or caring about consequences, seeing how much skin you can show, a population who only know how to get a date or have a “conversation” through the internet, and who don’t know what close, slow dancing feels like. I don’t know, Rose…Woodstock was how many years ago? (I mean, really, how many years ago. Too lazy to look it up!) But my point is people have been jumping into bed with each other since the sociological change from post marriage to pre…so I don’t think the era has anything to do with the demise of romance on GH. They could very well have recreated Duke and Anna…as a matter of fact they had one scene in her living room this last round where they danced. It just seems to me this regime isn’t interested in bringing any of their characters there…GH is currently about action, adventure, crime, crazies, revenge…all good soapy fun…but there needs to be more of a balance. When you have such great characters like Duke and Anna they should have, for nothing else than for nostalgia…let them have their reunion. Even when she found out it was really Duke and not Faison, it took her so long to trust him, to get over her “eebie-jeebies” associating his face with Faison in mask…that they never showed them as the couple we remember. They just went straight to grandparent mode and little chats. Just a total waste…

  19. Liam says:

I think it is HORRIBLE that he may leave. Yes, he is a legacy character who is actually interacting now with Lucy, another legacy character. Although I love Anna and Duke, I liked the idea of bringing Lucy into the mix, especially considering the history they all had back in the 80′s. Therein lies the problem with GH now. Why bring back all of the legacy characters if you aren’t going to properly use their history or even air them? Furthermore, I always held hope that Olivia Jerome would reappear, but guess that isn’t gonna happen now.

I’ll give another example…when the storyline involving Heather, Jason, and Franco was airing, there was so much talk about Susan Moore. Yet, we NEVER got a flashback scene of Susan Moore. FYI (for newer viewers), the “Who Killed Susan Moore” storyline was one of the best in the history of GH. Why no flashbacks? I’m sure the newer viewers would like to see who Jason’s mother was and how she died…the older viewers would like to see a flashback occasionally. Why couldn’t they really provide us with a twist by creating a backstory that involved Susan and Traci’s ex Mitch Williams (Susan’s ex-lover) conspiring with Susan to pass off his son as Alan’s in order to get their hands on the Q fortune? Since both Mitch and Traci were in Albany (off GH) at the time and Susan had her baby offscreen, we could have had a back storyline that showed how Susan lost her child (with Mitch) and she had Heather steal Traci’s child to pass it off as Alan’s (since the DNA would be similar). Traci could have thought she lost her child and never spoke about it. Yet, we’d have Traci turn out to be Jason’s real mother and subsequent storylines showing Traci and Monica sparring over being Jason’s mother.

Another missed opportunity…why hasn’t Julian or Ava interacted with Lucy? After all, she was involved in storylines with their father back in the day. Where was Lucy during the Joe Scully Jr. storyline (since she was around when his father was on too)? What happened to Deception or whichever company she was going to reboot?

Then you have the obvious missing links…Monica (regarding Michael and the Jake storyline), Leslie (her great grandson was burned), Laura (too many too count)…has Brenda seen Robin since it was discovered that she didn’t die? Whatever happened to Brenda’s great friendship with Lois?

Why couldn’t they make Monica the older sister to Madeline and Leisl who was separated from them when they were younger? Since Monica grew up in an orphanage, it would be a great opportunity to delve into Monica’s family (since we only ever got Monica’s cousin Lorena) while adding more people to Monica’s family since the Q’s have all disappeared. The chief of staff issue could have also been brought into the storyline.

I just do not understand bringing on new characters that have nothing to do with the rich history that GH has to offer. There is so much opportunity for good storylines with the vets that just gets overlooked.

    rebecca1 replied

I think his motives have been two-fold, Harry. Yes, he’s wanted revenge against Julian, but I also think, well, he actually stated, that he felt he had no purpose anymore. Perhaps, had AJ lived Duke and he could have become good friends and he might have climbed at ELQ (that’s IF he wanted to truly lead a legit life….lol…not sure how legit ELQ is but you know what I mean…outta the mob. When that fell thru I think he just felt emasculated. In his prior life with Anna he was a dynamic, powerful man. Now, he was hanging around having tea parties with Emma! I think getting back into the game gave him his identity back…and he just didn’t want to lose that…and got particularly irate when he realized Anna and Scorpio had been having “adventures” without him and doing some shady stuff ala Faison without him. So, he stood his ground. And hoped she’d come around. Tough call…but I hate the way it all fell out. They were so alluring together “back in the day”…I just thought the writers would try to recapture that. But as many of us have said they’ve wasted most of the legacy characters that they brought back…Lucy, Scott, Felicia, Mac, Bobby…

On a non Duke related note…I think I’m probably in the minority here but I really love Scott. I just think he’s so lovable…he grouches a lot but he’s really got heart. Love how he came through for Franco…

    @Rose.
    Hello, Rose.
No worries. Re-reading both our comments, I realize I came on a bit too strong…..I respect your thoughts and opinions. Anyone named Rose (my Mom’s name) MUST have noble intentions.
Yes, I completely understand your reasoning, however, those of us who do use a modicum of wisdom, are ‘bundled’ with those who were reared without high morals and ideals. A person is ,generally (LOL), a product of his/ her environment. Thus, it is somewhat unnerving when I hear that , not just from you, Rose, but, from many not of my generation. Nonetheless, I apologize for jumping the gun, per se.
As pertaining to GH, it is the adults, and then some, who are acting like teens with raging hormones ( more power to them…but physiologically and biologically, said hormones are practically non-existent for women; or at least, their hormones have calmed down some. Not so in men…….medically speaking, there are gender differences in women that do not apply to men…..except, of course, for erectile dysfunction, most times due to some of the meds they take.
What we are offered on this soap is not realistic. GH’s youth behaves much more ‘adult’ than the adults. You know what I mean? I wish the writers would give us a young, meaningful relationship without constant mishaps.
I hope I will be able to keep up with my husband when I’m Alexis’s age, as she seems to be always at the ready….quite an unrealistic feat having so much sex without natural estrogen…..LOL. I am not sure that if a woman were at the helm, she would have written women of a certain age so sexed-up. It is not realistic….a woman knows this. Scientific studies show that the decrease in sexual activity in post-menopausal women is between 63% to 85%. It is fact. These women still have sex, but not as frequently as Alexis…( watch me get blasted, Rose…double LOL).
We must also realize that our youth mimics television, movies, magazines etc., therefore, it is the adults who put this stuff out there…no gag orders, no restrictions or censorship ….free.
Keeping tabs on one’s children is futile sometimes. Youth finds its way to anything if it tries hard enough. It is the adults of these productions that should realize what example they set for kids. Children are our future…their brain should be fed with wholesome ideals to be nourished and nurtured by their experiences. Children grow up to become adults…but some never morally make it to adulthood. But, throughout time, there has always been a big gap between generations. Their focus is…” I can’t wait until I’m 18 or 21, so I can do what I want”.
You’d be surprised, Rose, how many times I heard this from my students. Oops, here I go, rambling again…sorry! I do not mean to preach. I shall stop.
I would like to thank you for appreciating my posts…I do tend to get carried away, as it were. Speaking my mind has always been a thorn in my mother’s side…since I was two…or so she tells me. She still wonders if it’s a good or bad thing…LOL. Later, Rose.

As for Billy Miller–he has the same sparkle in his eyes that Robert Scorpio always had. I LOVE his character. He’s pitch perfect in the role. Slowly coming to life as he becomes comfortable in Port Charles and with some people like Carly & Elizabeth.

HIs recent scenes with Elizabeth have oozed sexual longing and promise. Sorry, but I never found Steve Burton in the least appealing and I was happy when he went in the harbor.

Jordan deserves a great guy too. Maybe Jordan, Anna & Sam could be Charlie’s Angels. Only there’s no Charlie–just three strong women kicking ass.

Sloane’s about ten years younger than het…but he’s seemingly shady so I, too, don’t see that happening even as they play cat and mouse. Too bad Rick Springfield isn’t back…they’d make a great couple and they’re both grandparents to Emma.

As for veteran watchers–soaps will NOT survive because of people who’ve watched since the beginning. It’s about attracting new viewers–the kind of people who would NOT be attracted to Duke, but think Billy Miller is oh-so-hot!

I agree with your last statement as well, Lucy…and that’s a shame. There should be room for younger and older viewers, older and younger actors…just as there is in film and primetime…without out losing ratings.

Would like to see Ian stay, but he’s been put in limited roles for quite some time since the Anna breakup. We’ve seen indicators of a budding romance with Lucy Coe. She’s a background character these days, nothing exciting in the way of a storyline will come out of that. He needs a new woman with a character that has interest and plays an important role. He’ll probably end up getting killed off when they try and take out Jordan. That decision he’s making without Sonny’s consent will backfire on him, one way or the other. If he’s going to get written out, it may be via that route is my guess.

@downtownla: As per my comment above suggesting they get rid of Sabrina, Carlos, Jordan and Shawn is because they add nothing to the show’s stories. Sabrina should have been written out a LONG time ago. It has NOTHING to do with race or colour. If the show wants to add to its diversity (which I agree is a good idea) it should do so by bringing back already established characters – i.e. the entire Ward family (Faith, Maya, Keesha, etc.), or adding characters to already existing families (like they recently did with Valerie). I have absolutely nothing against people of colour in daytime, that’s not what my previous post was about. I just don’t think adding characters like Jordan and Shawn, who have no ties to the canvas and contribute nothing to story, is the way to go just to add diversity to the canvas.

Hey, Su…no one here is stating that they know for sure if Ian’s leaving…and if he does in what manner. The question posed to us by Michael Fairman is how would we feel about it if he does… So…we’re “feeling.” Obviously Duke is known, respected and loved by many of us who knew this character when he was written for in a much more meaningful way. Let us grieve… ;) ahem I don’t know why I gave you a smile…I was just trying to show a brave face in the midst of my anticipated despair!

    Hi Rebecca1..
OK– you should grieve for the loss , if he does leave, and you should eat a pint of ben & jerry’s..
    that eases the pain :)

Do not ”despair” it was better to have Duke than to have never enjoyed Duke..

    Perhaps he will go primetime..

Ian’s already been on primetime, and has been a Ford model, as well. I’ve no doubt he’ll show up somewhere should GH make yet another fatal mistake…enter Ben & Jerry’s. But that won’t lessen his noticeable absence on a show that’s putting its legacy characters on the chopping block (either by death, imprisonment or just plain neglect) one by one…

Parting is not sweet sorrow…just sorrow… There’s a gap when Port Charles becomes all familiar places with no familiar faces….

(The TV’s on in the background, tuned to a random channel. Just looked up; it’s a college basketball game. “Duke’s” losing. I hear ice cream calling my name….)

This is the worst possible decision TPTB can make for the show. Let’s face it, the writing and characterization has been terrible for a while now, and to get rid of Duke/Ian, arguably the most interesting and intriguing of the show, certainly the one with the most class and charisma, is just wrong on so many levels. Duke is a definite legacy and extreme talent. Just check out the subtleties in his acting. What a waste! There was so much potential for him and his relationship with Anna. First they destroy the love and romance of Duke and Anna and now we get this news? I will no longer be watching GH if this in fact goes down. I’ve read the same from a lot of other people on message boards and other comment sites. The fact is, this regime blatantly flips off the longtime fans with their misuse of legendary characters. Look what they’ve done with Luke (this current fiasco), Laura, Robert, Holly, Frisco, Blackey…you name it. And to give the reason or excuse that times and fads have changed and they are trying to draw in a younger crowd…give me a break. Smarter minds reign. How about trying to set a good example for younger people out there by writing good characterizations, instead of diving into the shock-factor, reality-show-like drivel that is out there. Good luck with generating staying power with that one. I predict this show will be canceled sooner than later with the course it is following.

Excellent post, Jacob. And that very mindset…”shock factor, realtiy-show-like drivel…is exactly why I hated the reboot of OLTL. Don’t know if you watched the ABC version, and what happened to it on PP’s version, but it was hideous. They threw in the word shit, lol, every five seconds for “realism.” Too funny. The show was inane…the random “shite” insane…and supposedly it was to lure in a younger crowd. It wasn’t the word that bothered me…I could care less…it was the literal throwing it in every other sentence because they could.

I’ve blocked the memory of Prospect’s version just to preserve my memory of the original! Although I still watch and enjoy GH, and hope it hangs in there for years to come, I think at some point many of us are just going to have to remember “the way ‘they’ were” when it comes to the residents of Port Charles…

I hope this doesn’t happen. Ian Buchannan is an incredible actor and Duke is a character who should’ve been forefront with Anna since his return. It’s been incredibly disappointing to watch the way their once incredible love story was written to be nothing but a footnote this time around. Ian and Finola still have great rapport onscreen but how can there be any spark when the writing is practically non-existent or dull as dishawater? Such a slap in the face to two such legacy characters and superouple.

IF Ian is leaving is by ABC or his choice to leave?

Duke and Anna lost their charm long ago..
Anna was much better with Scorpio, the better couple ..

Time moves on and now Anna and Sloane are hot ..

That’s your opinion. Obviously it’s not shared by everyone. Duke and Anna are one of the legendary couples of GH. For those of us who were a part of their journey back then and now you’ll have to understand how it would be hard to see two characters as ”hot” who have a total of maybe 3 episodes behind them…

Such disrespect towards a legacy character and history. With so many useless recurring and new characters introduced to us one day, then not seen for days or weeks on end; no wonder why I am two plus weeks behind on the show. Just sad.

If it is true that the great Ian Buchanan is leaving GH
I think he would be great on a primetime drama tv series. I think possibly NCIS Los Angeles or How to get away with murder.
