85 October 30th, 2015 Jason Thompson Confirms GH Exit: “It’s Not An Easy Decision But I Feel Like It’s Time To Hang Up Dr. Patrick Drake’s White Coat And Scrubs.”

In news that was imminent, and a sad one for long time fans of Dr. Patrick Drake on General Hospital, Jason Thompson announced Friday on Instagram he is leaving the ABC soap opera.

Thompson, who has received multiple Daytime Emmy nominations during his time on GH, but who has languished without front burner story for awhile now, related this heartfelt message to his fans, his colleagues, and the network.

Jason Thompson: “I’ve made the difficult decision to bid farewell to a character I’ve loved playing for over 10 years.  It was not an easy decision but I feel like it’s time to hang up Dr. Patrick Drake’s white coat and scrubs.  I want to thank Frank Valentini, Vicki Dummer, and Paul Lee for their support and appreciate their understanding. To everyone at ABC,  the General Hospital crew, producers, writers, directors, my beloved cast mates and those in my home away from home, the make-up room, I can’t possibly tell you what you mean to me.  Most importantly, I would like to thank the fans. General Hospital has changed my life and I want to thank you for that.  I am forever grateful for your love and support and for embracing me and this character all these years.  I mean these words from the bottom of my heart: GH is family to me, and I will miss you all dearly.”

With Kimberly McCullough returning as Robin in November, could this be Thompson’s exit storyline? Will Scrubs reunite? What will happen to the character of Dr. Drake? And as for Thompson, is he headed to The Young and the Restless? Many questions to be answered.

So, what do you think of Jason’s decision to leave GH?  How do you think Patrick as played by Thompson, should be written out?  In Thompson, GH is losing a major talent, are you devastated to see him go? Comment below!

They will go out in glory a BANG and forever be remember for the most coveted exit, out in a BANg/dead ..(most wanted exit of stars..

Considering the snooze queens are writing Patrick’s exit it most likely will be flowers and violins..

When Kim was written out the 1st time she wanted the coveted exit, out with a BANG and she got it..
this time it will be interesting to see her and Patrick’s exit..
I sincerely hope is will be mind blowing memorable death scene, off to heaven together. ..

Nothing (and I mean NOTHING) has been more detrimental to the soap genre than the tendency to writers to allow soap stars to have input on their exit stories. Only superceded by the tendency of writers to want to write the dramatic exit stories that entail the character’s death – only to reappear alive anywhere from months to years later. It was one thing when people were allowed to die offscreen in uncertain circumstances. But it really went off the rails when they started showing characters die and yet they STILL came back from the dead. Die hard soap fans lap it up while more practical viewers just walk away from the program. It just makes it harder for any soap to keep viewers.

    harrylime replied

Oh, Elizabeth, you assert your points so very well, and of course I agree with you.
And as much as I adore Robin, Kimberly being allowed to come and go while leaving that window open has been detrimental to the storylines and yes, Patrick has suffered the fall out from that pattern.
Robin should have been either killed off or brilliantly recast–the latter alternative is possible.
Tony Geary is a prime example of what can go wrong when an actor is allowed to have input on how his character will exit the canvas.
I used to love Luke, used to adore Tony, but his exit strategy pretty much destroyed all those good feelings I harbored for him all these years.
I don’t even miss him now.

Jason was at his best playing an arrogant, brilliant surgeon but ever since Robin left he was turned into a sappy, passive, weepy man. Jason deserves better writing just as Roger Howarth does.
I have heard rumors that Jason may be slotted as a Billy Abbott recast as Burgess Jenkins has been let go. While I feel bad for Jenkins because he has really proved himself as of late, I think Jason Thompson could work as Billy.

Rhetorical question, eh Harry???? Much like the character of Nina ended up being the proverbial “kiss of death” for Michael Easton’s Dr. Silas Clay, so was Patrick’s ludicrous and unnecessary affiliation with the insufferable Sappy…it was sno painful to witness how that long, drawn-out juvenile farce destroyed Drake Jr. beyond repair. Not even the subsequent romance with the ultimate sex-kitten Sam could redeem his manhood after the Sapster sapped him of all his alpha-male mojo. I don’t blame JT for leaving this show at his first opportunity….it was long overdue after the years of languishing in second-rate, less-than-appealing storylines. The real shame is that it didn’t have to be this way…Patrick could have easily been paired with Liz and/or yes, even Sam, far earlier and entirely skipped over that sugary sweet sham of a shagfest with Sappy. Either femme would have been far preferable, as I don’t necessarily find his current coupling with Ms. Morgan to be such a disaster, except for the timing…talk about too little, too late! Having said that, I am most disappointed that unless there is a recast, this departure may also spell the end of a possible future return for Noah….that’s always been at the top of my wish list! Lastly, if there’s one thing that completely roils me about this whole situation, it’s that whilst GH has managed to lose two of its most popular leading men (Easton and now, Thompson….) the dizzy chicks who set them on their paths to ruin remain on the canvas—doing yet more damage to other actors in a most similar manner—-and that is most certainly not cool!!! Talk about repeating the same mistakes over and over again…..

As a Scrubs fan, I’m pleased as punch with the headlines this week. I will tune in to see Robin’s return and Scrubs’ bon voyage! Yahoo!

As a former GH fan, I would too be concerned about what they will do without viable leading men or doctors on screen. But that’s their problem, not mine. Just a thought though, maybe Matt Hunter can get off on good behaviour and be released from prison- doctor and a Drake. Even a recast would do, if need be. Two birds, one stone. Not, forgive the pun, brain surgery!

    Shay replied

As always, thank you, Harry! (Or should I say, “harrylime?” Big Orson Welles fan, are you?) In response to your question, no, I have no sense of schadenfreude whatsoever where our poor Patrick is concerned. On the contrary, from the moment Robin supposedly roasted in her lab, I looked upon Dr. Drake as a victim….first as a grieving widower, then as a completely hapless, hopeless man trapped in the most absurd and inexplicable Disney-inspired nightmare ever imagined. The only emotion he evoked for me was abject pity….not just for the character, but the actor forced to participate in that frothy fiasco of a farce with the filly you so fondly refer to as “Sparkle Pony.” Quite frankly, I was giddy with glee when Robin arrived just in the nick of time to save her “husband” from his impending marital disaster with said Sappy, and as such, precipitated your so aptly termed “wedding interruptus!” It was, as you are frequently wont to put it, “a thing of beauty!”…and exactly what the doctor ordered….Patrick wasn’t a cad for choosing to stay with his very much alive spouse….they were still legally man and wife, after all! I certainly cannot fault him for doing the right thing, so to equate his upcoming loss of Sam—via Jason’s role of Drake marriage spoiler—as some possible sort of comparable or fitting comeuppance for leaving Sappy at the altar just doesn’t ring true for me. Furthermore, as if that entire episode of complete connubial chaos had not been enough to test Drake Jr., he next had to contend with not only Robin’s abandonment of her family, but the simultaneous insanity of the Sapster’s ludicrous “Pregnancy of Convenience-Uno” and OTT melodrama of “Gabe the Babe” in all of his phony plasticine glory. (Oh, the humanity!!!! I didn’t coin that roadkill kiddo as the “rubberino bambino” for nothing…..) Once again, I was absolutely aghast at the idiotic indignities suffered by Patrick—as well as Jason Thompson, who was quite obviously not a happy camper with that story arc….despite the actor’s immense professionalism, it definitely showed in his face and demeanor….Drake had simply lost his spark during those dark days with the Sapster. Therefore, I see nothing for which Patrick should deserve to be likewise devastated as his one-time jilted bride was, especially since even his current romance with the much sexier and more suitable Sam has been constantly overshadowed by her ongoing nostalgia for Jason….that’s more than enough bad karma for any guy to experience! Having said that, I’m at least gratified that JT had the joy of working with Kelly M in his final year on GH ….he certainly didn’t look miserable when they were together, even though we already are aware that a broken relationship is in the immediate offing for Dr. Drake when he discovers that Jason is indeed alive. Still, my final hope for Thompson—and Patrick— will be that he’s given an epic exit—and not the Silas Clay treatment—but rather something that will be commensurate with his many years of service in Port Charles and respectfully restore his character’s dignity in a manly fashion upon the occasion of that revelation….in other words, with a total absence of snorting, wailing, hyperventilating and collapsing in an utter heap like the Sapster did at the scene of her non-nuptial event. No app required for that, Harry! (Although I would love to see Spinelli’s next cyber project be to provide an ultra HD rendering of Sappy’s latest embryo complete with an unmistakably menacing little Carrrrr-LOS! Jr. doing his maniacal happy dance in vitro!)

Jason Thompson : debuted on GH, December 7, 2005
Kimberly McCullough: returned to GH : rejoining the soap full-time on October 12, 2005.

they both showed up on GH near the same time… and the rest is history…

Emma was born : on screen, November 4, 2008
Robin and Patrick got married: December 26, 2008

Robin exited via death : While the character was killed off on February 21, 2012
FV/RC brought her back….” McCullough’s scene on March 27, 2012 showed Robin to be alive, ”

so it’s pretty clear… Dr. Patrick Drake character has been languishing from that day on.

here are some nice “classic” quotes for each character : (ie: GH, wiki)

Patrick (to Robin): “I love you. Not maybe, not possibly, not someday. Right now, tonight. The fact is I’ve loved you for a long time. I don’t even know when it started. I realized that I need you, I trust you, I admire you. And you can be wrong a lot of the time and you can drive me crazy a lot of the time, but I love you, completely…I just thought you should know.”

Robin (to Patrick): “I’ve been hiding out for a long time. And the only thing that I have to show for that is loneliness and what I’m afraid to admit to in the first place. It’s a sad, wasteful way to live, so here goes. I think that you are amazing and brilliant and you’re also really funny and charming. And you’re my best friend. I love you.”

Patrick: “Can I have your attention please? I would like to say a few words about Robin Scorpio. She’s incredibly tender. And she cries at the drop of a hat. It’s pretty adorable. Especially now that she’s pregnant, she’s hormonal. But what I love the most about Robin is her unbelievable strength. She faces her fears and she stares them down. She’s been scared, truth is, for some time. And you’ve overcome your fears, and I’m — well, I think that I’m your last fear. So I’m here to tell you that — not to be scared any more. Because I’m in this for the long haul. Whatever that means. And we can face our fears together. Me and you. As a family. As a husband and wife. So, Robin, hey — say you’ll marry me?”

Robin: “He is — he is — he’s like a stallion. He’s a raw, untamed — I mean, I still can’t even feel my toes. He about broke my hip. I mean, every single time — I can’t — I can’t get enough. I just want more. “More, please? More?”
Patrick: “If you want more, Dr. Scorpio, you can have it anytime.”

    ——————–

I welcome the respect for this couple … and that the show will “reunite” this family and give the fans and the audience closure

as for Jason Thompson: “Thank you for giving us 10 years of one of the dreamiest characters to ever reel”

if the rumor mill is true… I hope Y&R or DAYS gives you every opportunity

LOL. Oh well, they were still mad fun to write….my own personal version of primal screaming therapy, I suppose…..and I have them all on file!) At any rate, it’s delightful to welcome you back to the GH threads, even if only on a temporary basis….you have been missed!!! By the way, you will be proud of me: when Michael Easton was let go from the show, I (finally)sharply curtailed my viewership—–as you once suggested to me—–and you were right…..it made for a much more pleasant day! I now only very sporadically check into the program, although I do keep up from daily recaps and the many wonderful people here at MFSoaps. Believe you me, that’s been more than adequate to know what a disaster our formerly great soap has become. Of course, like you, I shall tune in again for the (hopefully) blissful denouement of your beloved Scrubs’ saga, not to mention the return of the dashing Robert Scorpio! But other than that, if there is even a scent of one of those insipid newbie interlopers in the air during a preview, that’s it….no way, no how do I waste my time sitting there and gritting my teeth anymore whilst these unacceptable and superfluous players ruin the flavor of this once-venerable daytime classic. Having said that, it would appear that a modicum of sense is beginning to prevail at ABC as someone there has has at last gotten the message on fans wanting more vets…YAY! Now if they’ll just dispense with those highly unnecessary additions—you know the ones, right????? Mostly emanating from the Ron C. regime—-then perhaps the network will once again attain that magical formula to assure Port Charles’ place on the map for years to come….I sincerely hope so! Incidentally, I like your idea about a reintroducing Dr. Matt Hunter….if not in original form, then at least in a most suitable recast. It would probably be an easier task than introducing a reconstituted Patrick! (TPTB have done a fine job of selecting both Billy Miller and Richard Burgi to fill the shoes of legacy characters, so as long as they continue on that roll, a new Matt should do quite nicely…..although having her ex-hubby back in Port Charles would throw a proverbial monkeywrench into Maxie’s current canoodle with dishy Dudley DoRight, yet that romantic conundrum could also prove to be a right jolly! Oh, and juicy Johnny Z is slated to reappear, too! Ms. Jones cup runneth over!) Well now, I truly must be departing, but it’s been a real pleasure to reconnect with you, Jules…do keep in touch and don’t be such a stranger on these GH topics….your observations are always welcome and very often quite priceless! (To this day, I roar with appreciative laughter as I recall your quip about my shopping for “party hats” when Sappy’s—far too brief—maternity absence commenced….remember that awesome occasion? I know I certainly do!!!!) Later!

He will make an excellent Billy recast! He has been sidelined and wasted on GH thanks to Ron Carlivati’s inability to write intelligent human adult stories. The new regime at GH will make SENSE of three years of NONSENSE… and let Patrick and Robin and Emma go away together. Its a loss for the show in terms of Jason’s talent, but in terms of story… Its the only thing that makes sense! If I lived in a city THAT violent, And I had a daughter, and a wife who had been kidnapped by multiple psychos for nearly four years…I would move too!! Thompson is Canadian…so am I. Even in our fiction…we dont exist in such grim, dark, murderous cities (except for maybe Winnipeg) so for him to be such a good actor, and have a new opportunity at Y and R as Billy…that is awesome! In the last 2 months, Burgess was growing on me…it was never his acting. It was just that he didnt fit the role. He did some great work. But go back to 2005…. Patricks introduction…he was cocky and confident and fun…like Billy Miller. I think his chemistry with Amelia Heinle will be off the charts!!

I hope JT is not subjected to fail of another Billy. I would not want to have him go through that.
Billy Miller made the Billy charter so much his own that is very hard to replace Billy.
Jason Thompson is not right for the role, his persona just is would not be a good billy.

JT is an excellent actor but not as Billy Abbott.
Just because he will be free from GH doesn’t mean he should stick his fine azz in the fire being another failed Billy Abbott.

Amelia and Jason could never pull off what Amelia and Billy Miller had..
It would be a dangerous move for JT to attempt to take over the role of Billy, not a good career move.

Dylan, what an excellent post. Yes, you put it so well–it was not about Burgess’s acting ability, it was his overall persona. Billy Miller is lightening in a bottle–he’s the kind of guy who enters a room and charges it with a crackling energy just from entering it.
Who can follow that? More importantly, who can imitate that? Answer–no one.
Back to Jason Thompson–Ron’s writing pretty much emasculated Patrick. He was fine going toe to toe with Robin but after she left and allegedly died, he was relegated to playing the lonely, ever suffering young widowed father. Then they pair him up with Sparkle Pony and he is relegated to playing her fantastical vision of Disney’s Prince Charming. Finally, they pair him up with the hot babe in jeggings and five inch stilettos, and he has to endure her waxing breathless poetics about Jason, Jason, Jason. I am sure it got rather crowded in their bed and Patrick never struck me a menage a twa kind of guy. In short, the handsome and talented Jason Thompson deserved better writing and they made him Sam and Sappy’s second fiddle girl friend.
I hope he gets the good writing he deserves on Y&R and yes, I do think he and Amelia will produce fireworks. He could make an excellent Billy.

Can’t quite see him as a Billy recast but just glad he has landed on daytime somewhere. Huge loss for GH. Will miss him LOTS.

Losing the only real doctor (Lucas is rarely on) is troubling on a show that should be based on General HOSPITAL. I don’t want the role recast, but this is problematic.

Hopefully Jason going to Y&R means Kelly is returning to GH to play Connie/Kate. Thats a fair exchange.

This is really sad news for GH. Jason Thompson is one of the most underrated actors in daytime. His work is consistently amazing, and it’s a shame to see his talent leave the show. He’s been languishing on the backburner for far too long, and even his story with Sabrina was sub-par. Wherever he ends up, he’ll do very well.

Hopefully, with Burgess Jenkins out at Y&R (finally!), JT can take over as Billy. I think he’d be a stellar addition to the cast.

To whomever replied to my comment, thank you for your kind message! It was perfectly lovely, and I cannot understand why it didn’t make it to post. At any rate, it was most appreciated! Thanks again…..and please let me know who you are at your next opportunity!

Can’t say that I blame him. It’s clear the new direction for the show precludes anyone having a story unless they are a Corinthos.

Sometimes egos often get in the way of things. We got Laura back when Luke left. If he had stayed, we would be without her. Ned, not a big deal. Replace him with Michael Muhney and get the Quartermaines back to the forefront. Jason Thompson is a very good actor but I’m rather bored with Patrick since Robin left. We need a more daring doc at GH and a crazy doc like David of All my Children. By the way, will someone wake up the German chief of staff. She’s boring now that she has no goal(Faison).

Patrick was most fun to me during his sleuthing days with Sam. Patrick made a great adventure male lead.

This is terribly sad news to me. I will miss Jason and “Patrick” on GH. There was so much they could have done with that character. Jason is a wonderful actor. I hope he’s not going over to Y&R, but these rumors have a way of being true. Even if he does go there, I wish him nothing but the best. He’s given me a lot of entertainment of the years on GH.

Cast Michael Muhney as his replacement. Then recast Elizabeth Hendrickson as Robin. Life goes on. Actors are replaceable. It’s the life of soaps folks.

Started watching GH in 2008 at the peek of Patrick and Robin. I thought they would always be together and the thought of the two never being on screen together breaks my heart. Samtrick was never a match for our beloved Scrubs. I have been following Kimberly since she left and will do the same with Jason. I hope to see them on the big screen one day. Their chemistry rolls off one another. XO. Always.

Like others have stated, I can understand JT’s decision. His character went from sexy, strong, & cocky to boring, weak, and under utilized. IMO, Robin & Patrick’s relationship, up until Emma was born, was the hottest relationship on GH. Their banter & love/hate roundabout was delightfully compelling. With JT leaving, I hope the three are united, Robin needs to be with Emma. (I’d miss that adorable girl, but she could visit Anna). Killing them, as some are suggesting, would destroy Anna and be an unusually cruel ending, particularly when Robin’s character has been well loved since she was a little girl. I hope JT gets a challenging role that showcases his talents & I wish him all the best!

G.H. writers let Jason Thompson down.
GH. writers let their viewers down.
I knew this day was coming, but had held out hope that the writers would pull something together for the character he played.
All actors want more depth and excitement…
    We viewers want more too.
I am 50 years old, and cannot remember T.V. without G.H. I have seen great actors come and go, but I put Jason Thompson in a special category.
I hate to see him go….but, with today’s technology and my trusted DVR…I will check him out, like I have Mr. Burton.
I will always continue watching G.H.
    THANK YOU JASON THOMPSON !!!
