Now here’s a great twist on a twist! John Wesley Shipp, beloved to daytime soap fans for his roles on Guiding Light, As the World Turns and One Life to Live has been cast in the upcoming version of the CW’s television pilot remake of The Flash!  The thing of it is …  Shipp played ‘The Flash’ in the early 90′s version of the CBS series whose alter ego is Barry Allen.  So just who is he going to play this time?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Shipp will guest star in the pilot playing a mysterious character.  Details for his character are being kept close to the vest. If the proposed Arrow spinoff receives a series order, his role would expand to recurring status.”

Actor Grant Gustin plays the title role in the CW pilot version of the super-hero drama where he is a Central City assistant police forensic investigator who visits Starling City to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past. Through a freak accident, he is given the power of super speed that transforms him into the fastest man alive.

So, who do you think Shipp will play in the pilot?   Let us know your thoughts!

I had no interest in it in 1990 when I was a teen and certainly have no interest in it now.

Surprised he hasn’t been asked to join the cast of “General Hospital” since there are so few characters in Port Charles.

He is the reason I started watching As The World Turns and watched until the day if went of the air. I still miss it. Douglas Marland created an interesting character and it was incredible television. My guess is he will be the father of the Flash or a new character…Flash Dancer. Kinda like Flash Gordon but with leggings.

The storyline Marland wrote for him on ATWT–the Douglas Cummings mystery and murder storyline–would probably get my vote as the single best-written mystery storyline the soaps ever did. Not surprisingly, it came right at the end of the period when the writers drove the genre; the incessant meddling by executives started with the 1987 (or maybe it was 1988) writers strike, and after that I’m sure it became much more difficult to craft mystery storylines that didn’t have gigantic plotholes in them (or any kind of coherent storyline, for that matter).

It helped immensely that the actors were fabulous: Shipp, Julianne Moore, Kathryn Hays, Guilia Pagano, Don Hastings, Steven Weber–just stellar, all of them.

He will always be Kelly (GL) to me, but I loved him in Dawson’s Creek, too. The Douglas Cummings SL was superb. on ATWT. Congrats to JWS!

The original Flash was Jay Garrick… perhaps they’ll have him play that role & be Barry Allen’s mentor. That would be a nice twist. BTW, I’m a soap fan & a comic geek in case you hadn’t figured that out, LOL.
