While the reviews have been mixed, the latest David O. Russell film JOY, which features a soap opera thread into the storytelling of the life of Miracle Mop invenstor Joy Mangano had a better than expected, and strong Christmas Day opening in movie theatres nationwide.
The Jennifer Lawrence starring vehicle, which is the third collaboration between her and O.Russell is expected to bring in around $21 million by the time this holiday weekend is over after early reports that it scored 6.8 million on its opening.
If that stays on course, that would make JOY an even stronger opening than the last film of O. Russell and Lawrence’s, the Oscar nominated American Hustle.
While critics have found this outing of O. Russell’s less appealing, the film seems to be connecting to the exact demographic its targeting .. that of mature females. JOY also features performances by soap opera notables: Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Laura Wright (Carly) of General Hospital, Knots Landing favorite, Donna Mills (Ex-Abby and Madeline, GH), and soap icon Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica All My Children, now Devious Maids).
