163 January 14th, 2015 Kristen Alderson “Why I Decided To Leave General Hospital” Video Message To Fans!

Courtesy/YouTube

As she had promised, Daytime Emmy winner Kristen Alderson tonight posted a very special video message to her fans offering an explanation and her side of the story as to why she decided to not re-sign with General Hospital end continue in the role of Kiki Jerome.  The actress is finishing up her time at the ABC soap opera this month.

On this the day that the last episode of One Life to Live aired on ABC three years ago, Alderson next was able to take the character of Starr Manning to General Hospital.  However, after the Prospect Park legal entanglements, ultimately Kristen’s could not longer play Starr, and GH created a new role for her that of Kiki, the daughter of mob gal Ava Jerome (Maura West) and daughter to Dr. Silas Clay (Michael Easton).  Below are Kristen’s sentiments shared in the video on her departure.

Kristen Alderson: ” I have had the best time over the past three years.  And this decision is purely spur of the moment, kind of an epiphany that I had that I have been in this amazing soap bubble since I was six-years-old, and now I am twenty-three, and I have never done anything else, or pushed myself, or challenged myself to do other things, and not necessarily in the industry, but things in life like … taking a class here or there for something other than acting, and getting back into singing, which you guy know I love to do …  so that would be really exciting.  And who knows where this road is going to take me?  But, this had all happened very quickly, but I am prepared for the worst, and I am prepared for any failures.

I am prepared for all the excitement it will bring, and it’s just a new chapter in my life, and I couldn’t be more grateful to the support you guys have given me, and all of the love.  I love you guys so much.  I’ve always cared about you.  I’ve grown up with you, you’ve grown up with me, and I am always going to be a part of your life.  I will be tweeting and instragramming … and you know I will! ‘Thank You’ to Ron (Carlivati) and Frank Valentini, and everyone at ABC for all of your support, and ‘Thank You’ to the fans … you are the best in the world.  Soap fans are family, and you always will be be.”

I don’t think it really was her decision, I think it was the network’s. Ultimately I think it was a mistake – Kiki served her place in the storylines and Alderson always put in a solid performance. However it seems as though she has decided to take the dismissal as a challenge and given that attitude I am sure it will tun out to be a blessing in disguise. Onward and upward, Kristen!

    Rebecca1 replied

I kind of get that impression, too. She’ s known Frank and Ron since she was a little girl and they chose her as one of the few to live on in GH. It might have been a salary dispute and whomever is in charge didn’t feel the character at this point warranted more money or perhaps wanted her to accept a salary cut. Out of respect and friendship to Kristen, they may have allowed this”version” of events to be the official story. I’m rarely on Twitter and haven’t been for a while but she seemed to love working at. GH. Seemed kind of sudden as even she said in her video.
On the other hand, maybe she contemplated the move made by Kelly Thiebaud and realized Kelly gave herself four years on a soap and moved on…maybe Kristen realized she’s been on four times
as long and should take the plunge. Time will tell…if she winds up on another soap in the near future.
Either way great girl/actress. Will miss her on GH; I actually liked her as KiKi… Best to you, Kristen.

Good point, Jeremy. Could be that as well.

    KansasGuest replied

@Samantha – Fans of soaps & tv dramas just love their…well…drama, don’t they? It’s not enough for them to watch it on screen. They have to extend it to off-screen, behind-the-scenes, & in actor’s personal lives. I tend to do what you do, Samantha. Believe the statement. She didn’t have to put one out at all. That she did is worth something. To brush it aside & say she was pushed out is insulting to the actress. Look, she’s financially secure – unlike a lot of 23-year-old’s – and she’s worked with these two professionals – FV & RC – for 17 years. The young lady needs to see what else is out there in life other than working on a soap! Good for her for not continuing to play it safe & spreading her wings. I wish her the best.

    Rebecca1 replied

Samantha and. KansasGuest…I can hear you ! So can Jeremy and NickD. We all like her and wish her the best just as you do. I, as many, have watched her since she was a little girl, I was thrilled when she continued on with. GH, actually like her as KikI, and am sad we’ll be losing her in the role. That doesn’t mean we’re not allowed to speculate if there was some behind-the-scene reason…I’m willing to bet she and her friends speculate on some things too whether it be other actors, friends, business associates, etc. doesn’t imply anything negative. What IS negative and insulting are your comments to those of us who wonder if there’s any more to the reason. but, as you said, soap fans just love their drama. They like to initiate animosity…

Bravo, Rebecca. Thank you for saying it so well. I was too tired to react.

And her love for fans is genuine. I met her quite a few times when she was on OLTL. She was always sweet to everyone.

I don’t know if you just coined ( no pun intended) the expression ” golden handcuffs” but I’d never heard it before. Excellent choice to describe her remaining on the soap for too long vs seeking other opportunities… Still hate to see her go….

    Reply

    Jay Keaveny replied

Thanks! The “golden handcuffs” phrase came from Robert S. Woods. It was advice that he gave to Nathan Filion when he was contemplating leaving OLTL. It seems to have worked out well for him.

From all accounts, Kristen is a joy to work with. Always prepared and professional. No diva tendencies. If she decides to return to daytime, there will always be a place for her.

    Rebecca1 replied

Love Robert Woods. It’d be great if they could find a place for him on GH. By all accounts he’s quite loved and respected too.

    Michael (not Fairman) replied

It’s actually a fairly common phrase; it’s used quite a lot where I work (people are well paid, to such a degree and so far out of line with comparable jobs elsewhere that they get themselves in a position where they can’t really afford to leave even though they would like to and should—hence, “golden handcuffs”). I had heard it before that, too, though not as commonly as I have since I started this job.

    Rebecca1 replied

@michael (not Fairman). We’ll, they could leave…it’s just that the desire to do so has to be stronger than the huge paycheck. Personally? I’d love to have that dilemma!

HMM??? Has anyone thought about the fact that very soon ABC may indeed have rights to the characters of Starr John and Todd? Perhaps it is more forward thinking than we realize as KIKI is going nowhere, the character is a dud. If indeed they are bringing back the old OLTL characters, well it only makes sense for GH to rid themselves of these new ( lets say..less popular ones) to make room for a giant comeback?

Maybe I am 100% wrong…but Ron and Frank have been working with her for Years, so I think there is more than that working behind the scenes. Anyone else haer rumblings about the lawsuit and when these characters are released?

I don’t see anyone rebooting OLTL after the financial fiasco it became for Prospect Park. However, it would be great if one day the budget allowed a return of its characters back into the world of Port Charles. Kristen is a good actress, and I think she excelled in the role of Starr. But Kiki was not as impressive of a character as Starr was, she didn’t have the story and I think it was a mistake taking away her connection to Roger Howarth’s Franco, because they have such a good father/daughter chemistry. The character wasn’t really going anywhere and the writing wasn’t the best. She’ll do well in other opportunities and projects though, she’s a talented young actress.

It was nice of Frank Valentini and the powers that be at ABC to allow her to go out this way. It’s the least I can do for someone who has devoted the majority of their life to one entity. This character has never worked, and it was time for her to leave the canvas. I like the way it was handled for her. Classy job ABC.

Then came KiKi and that even was more of an adjustment. We all will miss you but wish you the very best with every thing you do, Good Luck !!

I agree. I think it started with the character’s nickname-”Kiki,” that helped make the character annoying & not enjoyable. I do wish the actress the best, however.

What a lovely video:) Add me to the list of watching Kristen Alderson grow up on OLTL. She comes off and sounds like a young woman w/a good head on her shoulders and great spirit. She had a unique childhood in the soap biz, but she was raised in a solid home. I remember seeing her mom and her brother Eddie (another fav) in the magazines and the behind the scenes action and they looked happy. They say your 20′s is for discovery. Branch out girl and good luck!!!
    Will miss you on TV.
I still remember when Starr found Colin (or evil twin) on the spinning carnival wheel and Starr’s 1st kiss in Central Park. Think she ran away. My memory is shot.
Btw, who’s your fav Todd? Just kidd:)
Best of luck in all you do!!

    Hi Kristen,
Some of the best decisions are made quickly. I think you are making the right move. It is time to give yourself a break from working so hard. I was an OLTL fan. I hope you take a long vacation and maybe go to college. I hope you enjoy the break from work. You seem like a really nice person, and I am sure that it was not easy switching from OLTL to GH as some of us fans were so upset that OLTL was cancelled. Anyway, I wish you the best in life.

i watched you as Starr Manning since you were 6 (I feel old) and met you and Eddie at one of the OLTL fan club celebrations. I always thought they named your character after me because I had given Kassie a baby gift when she was pregnant – but I am sure I am delusional! You have grown into a beautiful young woman without even an awkward stage. You have learned your craft in the most amazing way. Good luck out there in the crazy world of Hollywood where you are only as good as your latest job! Good luck in whatever you do!

    Kristen,
I’ll truly miss you on G.H. because as many others have said before me, I remember you as One Life to Lives’ Starr Manning. It’s difficult to conceive that time has sped by so fast on a character who grew before my eyes from the age of six (6) years old to now. Soaps have a problem with allowing children to go through the normal aging process because they’re in a hurry to take a story in a different direction. Your character and Robin’s were allowed to grow up on the shows. Thank God for that; those two Soaps made two of the greatest decisions in history.
My only sorrow is that Starr and Todd couldn’t remain father and daughter for your Soap career. You should have been able to play Starr Manning forever with either of the Todds: Trevor St. John or Roger Howarth.

I hope that you change your mind and stay; if not , May God bless you in all your future endeavors !

It is very important that this actress gets an education. She will have much more to draw from. She really needs to increase her general knowledge and understanding to create personal depth that will hopefully inform her portrayal of a character. I’m happy she seems to realize that.

As a life long soap viewer, I went to OLTL after ATWT was cancelled. I refused to watch the Bell products. Then, to follow a few, I begun to watch GH. I was so glad that it worked that GH was able to keep you three and work you all into other characters instead of the alternative. Oh no, now I’m going to have to go to a Bell product to follow you. You will do a terrific job. I admire your ambition. Hopefully you can bring your singing onto the show. I did watch it back I the soap glory days, as I was a CBS fan and really enjoyed it when Thornes character wasn’t in the basement and he (then Jeff Tracta) and Macy (Bobbie Eakes) sang on the show. It will be cool to see you on screen with AJ. Ironic that he’ll be your dad. Good luck in all that you do.

I was excited to watch Kiki & everyone try to raise the new baby & I always wanted them to explore the family ties-Julian being Kiki’s uncle making her related to Sam & Danny, Lucas too. They never did get that going. It is so tangled. Has anyone thought about baby Avery’s family tree? Crazy! Plus Silas will sure miss his kid! Are they going to recast?

I’ve had 17 years of enjoyment watching you grow up on OLTL from the time you first appeared until the demise of that show and the character of Starr, and then your transition to GH as Kiki. You were a talented, adorable, precocious little girl who continually honed her natural skills and had unbelievable chemistry with your on-screen coworkers on OLTL, especially Roger H, Kassie D, and Robin S. The same held true for you and all of your castmates on GH as well. You have really grown into an even more talented, lovely young woman. I will always think of you as Shorty.

I had no idea that you would no longer be on GH until I turned it on today to watch it. I would be lying if I said I am not shocked by this news. I was devastated when All My Children and One Life to Live were dropped by ABC. I tried to like the short-lived, new version of AMC, but it wasn’t the same and would never have lived up to the real thing. I vowed to stick with GH, which I have been watching since my teens no matter what. I was thrilled to see Todd, Starr, and John join GH, and even remained so after the three of you were given abrupt new identities. Kristen, I have watched you since you were a precocious, spider-loving, little girl and loved seeing you grow up to be a very talented and beautiful young woman. You will be missed more than you can even begin to imagine. Being selfish, I would love to see you remain an actress so I could continue to marvel at your ability, but please know that I wish you nothing but the best as weell as insurmountable success in whatever field you wish to pursue. God bless you and take care of you. The replacement for Kiki doesn’t meet my standards, but I understand your need to find your place in the world. You will be missed more than you can comprehend..
