As the news was finally able to be officially revealed today, General Hospital’s Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) who has been in contract talks with the ABC soap opera has signed on to continue in the role of the Port Charles mobster, after an already fantastic front-burner 21 years on the daytime drama series.

Maurice tweeted on his staying put for now to his fans today:  “It’s great to stay home for a little while longer doing what I love to do thanks for all your support couldn’t do it without you.”

In On-Air On-Soaps brand new interview with Maurice, when we asked if he was staying put with the show since he was in contract talks, and to please tell us he wasn’t just staying for a few months, the Daytime Emmy winner commented, “I will be there.  I’m not, not staying!  (Laughs)  And no, you’re not going to lose me in three months. (Laughs).”

Make sure to read On-Air On-Soaps chat with Maurice where he discusses the turbulent year of Sonny Corinthos and his thoughts on his co-stars including: Laura Wright (Carly), Maura West (Ava), Rick Hearst (Ric), William deVry (Julian), Chad Duell (Michael), Bryan Craig (Morgan), and Brandon Barash (Johnny).

Look for further details into Maurice’s new contract deal in an upcoming feature in ABC Soap In Depth!

LOL….At least I can look forward to many more posts expounding upon your utter disgust and revulsion at the “Napoleonic Don” and his repugnant escapades. They have been a real source of delight for me, especially your most recent ones…Mercy, Girl, you did not hold back!!!!!…It is such a pleasure to witness someone who shares both my high moral standards and saucy sense of humor….keep those cheeky comments coming, as I’m sure Sonny Boy, Carly, Ava, et al, will continue to provide endless fodder for which you can opine those inspired thoughts of yours!!!! ; )

Absolutely, Patrick. I will never run out of negative superlatives (I know, I know, that’s an oxymoron…contradicting myself with my own words) for Sonny. Thus, CARAMBA is definitely “the nice way to say”….. Actually, Patrick, the expression defines you to the letter. You are so diplomatic in your writing; I should more like you and be neutral…but then? I would not be who I am.
You are a great guy….very intuitive. Happy New Year.

As usual, su, I have absolutely no idea from whence you are coming. I was merely complimenting CeeCee on her phenomenally witty way of describing not only SonnyBoy and his nefarious antics to a “t,” but many of the other morally suspect characters and actions often seen on GH, yet you found my words to imply something negative???? I’m mystified.

My dear, sweet Shay. I know what your intent was; so su’s words hold no consequence. However, in Su’s defence, she is just joshin’….being sarcastic/sardonic, if you will. I think through these threads, I have come to ‘understand’ her. I like her comments. I may not always agree, but she makes me chuckle. She knows I have high morals ; opposite of all that is Sonny and his ilk. Su likes to rub-it-in…yah, Su? To know me; look at me, one would not believe it, especially for someone my age. I just don’t understand why there could never be a romantic storyline without falling into bed after two seconds. As my husband says, he would hate to be within a circle of men where he knew every one of them had had his wife in the sac….(his words)…..even one guy would bother him.LOL.

So, In a round-about-way, su is actually complementing the both of us. I can’t even find the words to tell you how much I appreciate you and your mind without sounding mushy, phony and ostentatious. Plus, I do not want to make you uncomfortable with my effusiveness. But, you have me pegged right, Shay. You and I seem to be of one mind….a rare phenomenon; especially for two people who know each other through their words…..HAPPY NEW YEAR. Later.

    Hello, Shay-girl.
Agreed, there’s no denying Dr. O’s excellent performance of anything “scary”or otherwise………it fits her volatile personality. But, not in a hospital setting (for sick kids). I suppose it depends on whether one has had to deal with a gravely ill child or not. Personally, I found it in poor taste for TPTB to present Krampus in these circumstances.
Now, let’s talk about one of “our” favorite exhibitionists, Alexis. God has endowed this character with an abundance of mammary glands. Many of us are afflicted with that “problem”. Believe me, I know. However, when a woman reaches a certain age….how old is she?….the law of gravity takes over. And, no matter how well she folds her arms under these over-the-hill orbs, the cleavage just deepens; grotesquely. So, let’s just pack them away, nice and neat without any chance of escaping their confinement. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Well, CeeCee, the fact that you have managed to crack the “su code” makes you a far better decipherer than I shall ever hope to be…LOL! But as long as we understand each other, that’s really all that matters to me….of course, I completely “get” your moral perspective because it is mine, as well!!!! Needless to say, it’s truly a treat to be able to relate to—not to mention utterly relish—-the commentary of another “kindred spirit” when it comes to notions of old-fashioned romance and decency, especially in today’s more “anything goes” environment. Whether in person or online, that’s certainly something to be celebrated…particularly when it is presented in such a delightful and delicious manner! (Ditto for your spouse…if only more modern men were that upstanding! You definitely got yourself a good one…and vice-versa!) Having said that, it appears that this little “mutual admiration society” we have established will be going strong into 2015…nothing at all discomfiting about that!!!! Happy New Year to you also…..and hubby, too!!!! P.S. Couldn’t help but think of you (and your favorite GH “minx” Sam….) during my after-Christmas shopping spree….found a fabulous pair of black suede designer booties with FIVE-inch stiletto heels!!!! Point taken, CeeCee…..I truly do understand—and sympathize—how Dr. O’s personification of the grotesque Krampus might be a real thorn in the side for certain viewers, depending upon their personal history. From my own perspective, I was able to laugh at the immense irreverence and inescapable horror of Liesl’s mirthful masquerade, but, of course, not all would, could or should….As for Alexis and her obtrusive “orbs” (as you so delicately termed them….LOL….) I can appreciate your “physical” analysis on the challenges of the female form….or perhaps I should say, the “physics”—-your area of expertise—- of the situation, since the laws of gravity, ahem, definitely do apply. Having said that, I don’t simply take issue with the fact that Ms. Davis loves to constantly display herself in such an undignified fashion, but that the overwhelming psychological need she seems to have in doing so appears to blind her to the reality that it is completely untoward, not to mention, awfully unattractive, for a woman at her “level of…..maturity?” As you stated, at some juncture it should become highly apparent that those particular assets are no longer that….and thusly, as a public service, should be kept discreetly concealed. Additionally, one would think that when a person’s shapely “Playmate” of a daughter manages to observe more occasions of modesty than even said mother, it would give the supposedly brilliant female in question something to think about. Just saying…..P.S. I’m eagerly awaiting Harry to weigh-in, as this is a favorite topic of his!!! Hello…..Harry???? (Happy New Year!)

I am so sick of the recurring theme of age here. If a woman…or man…wants to dance his /her ass off til the day they drop dead at the age of 100 …I say get done to it! If either wants to drive a sports car, leap out of a freaking plane or get some ink…have fun! And if our fictional character Alexis wants to show some cleavage…couldn’t care less. She’s a bright, beautiful woman who thankfully still is healthy…looks healthy…and chooses her style. Whether Nancy graham chooses or prefers or the wardrobe dept…which is most definitely the case…that’s fine. Alexis is portrayed as a brilliant, albeit slightly neurotic, a great mother, loyal friend and a person with great charm, wit. Similarly…stop screeching about Sam being too old to dress in her style…or others being too old to sleep with whomever they want when they want. This is not Church, Temple or any religious institution…it’S a soap!!!! passing all this moral judgement on cleavage, sex on and on and on…ugggg! This was my reaction months ago when Carly was brought up by a particular poster…her age brought into the conversation…We were all 20-something… and if we’re lucky we’ll be 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 something, Dress the way you want,,,act the way you feel…and screw those who don’t find it “age appropriate.” Who decides what’s appropriate? And by the way…there are people in their 20s who shouldn’t be wearing tight jeans or short skirts…not because of their age but because it’s not flattering on them. And then there are those in their 50s and beyond who look amazing in any of those styles. And sex? Keep on keep in’ on…safely…don’t stop til you drop!

@Rebecca Whoa you go girl I love it! I was in the Doctors office this morning and I love my Doctor anyway he asked me if the music they were playing was too loud. My reply Doc if it is too loud you are too old. And not to brag but I drive a sports car with a nickname on my license tag that would be considered youthful and I am 50 and I love it.

    Rebecca1 replied

Hey , k/kay! Ya..all this talk about who shouldn’t wear what or do this based on age was…getting old! ;)

Ride that car, girl…blast your music and honk when Uptown Funk comes on. I’ll be dancing my ass off somewhere in some inappropriate way!

    Shay replied

@k/kay…..Cranking up the tunes and/or cruising in one’s sporty roadster which bears a sassy ID plate are vastly different things than having a skank fest with every Tom, Dick and Harry in town (no offense to our Harry intended…) or wearing inappropriate garb whilst flashing one’s decrepit décolletage as often as possible. It’s simply a matter of having good taste, propriety and class, which I am quite sure you do in spades, dear lady!!!! My point in all this blown-up “ageist” brouhaha is that it’s bad enough when such questionable behavior is the result of youthful indiscretion, but there’s absolutely no excuse in the world when women of a “certain maturity” act or dress in such a disgraceful and disreputable fashion. It’s neither amusing nor entertaining, especially when it is so often presented as the rule rather than the exception. That is where my criticisms lie in this absurdly inflated argument….and I certainly don’t apply them to such “over 50″ GH characters as Anna, Liesl, Madeline or Monica. Each of these women reflects a personal style and individual panache in their own way without looking trashy or desperate to be noticed. However, I definitely cannot say the same for those cheap chicks Alexis, Bobbie Boop or FLoosy Coe! That’s the point I’ve been endeavoring to make through these posts!!!!!

    Rebecca1 replied

Shay…lol..brouhaha? Absurdly inflated argument? What happened to everyone’s entitled to his or her oen opinion? Which by the way u thought another “discussion” a while ago was tres amusing when it didn’t involve you. And…you find it perfectly normal, acceptable and “fun” when a poster gets so bent out of shape she screams in caps…”so you like pregnant women getting stabbed….” Or some such nonsensical accusation… Then makes a comment sharing a post to her friends and having a laugh…goes on from there to imply stalking…THAT you don’t find a tad over the top oe “overblown.” Really. I think it’s ridiculous to try to get k/Kay to go back on her opinion. I bet she read everything in context the first time,,,

    Rebecca1 replied

And Shay…maybe, just maybe…Nancy Graham occasionally reads these posts. Is it classier to call a woman’s décolletage decrepit..then her actually presenting her cleavage which doesn’t meet with your approval? I didn’t know insults and body shaming were such cultivated skills…but why stop when one can have so much fun articulating and embellishing insults with such a creative flair for wordplay to a small but receptive audience!

This contract renewal tells me 3 things: 1) TPTB @ GH have a long-ish term plan for Sonny that entails Maurice Bernard’s presence for longer than 3 months; 2) both sides seem to agree that Less Sonny/More Other Male Leads is a good thing; and 3) the mob influence in PC will continue regardless of Sonny’s presence because it’s a unique hook among the remaining daytime soaps that has long roots in GH older than Sonny’s presence. Sonny & his stories in PC started 5 years *before* THE SOPRANOS aired. But, the mob was a presence in PC long before that with Frank Smith putting a hit out on Luke Spencer that sent him on a most clandestine run with a girl named Laura Webber. GH will never get rid of the mob. But, maybe, with Jake as the catalyst, it will eventually be put it in its right place – with the heroes on the right side of the law, & the criminals behind bars.

  8. Jamesj75 says:

For the long-running soap opera that is “General Hospital,” this is NOT good news. Today I will not be criticizing Mr. Benard. The character of Sonny, however, has been frontburner for far too long. Once this whole mess began, the show devolved from a hospital-centric drama to a mob-based one. Sadly, they never looked back, despite several changes in executive producers and head writers.

Once this train wreck began, the show’s title should have been changed to “Sopranos Lite,” then “The Docks” (where most of the action took place), and now “Pentonville” (given that frontburner Sonny resides there, and the writers are contrivedly giving him as much company as possible by imprisoning other peripheral characters for a variety of criminal infractions).

Yet, it is the viewer who is imprisoned, subjected to the continual onslaught of darkness. The viewer is expected to worship and glorify a flawed hero. And the emperor is not wearing any clothes… Forget the dimples… The character of Sonny is a bully, plain and simple. He is condescending, abusive, foul-mouthed, quick-tempered, judgmental, controlling, and downright mean! And that’s not only part of his job description. He doesn’t reign in these less-than-stellar traits for his family. (You’ll notice I didn’t write “and friends” because the character has no friends, just work associates.)

When I think of GH’s rich history—and I was there for almost all of it—my thoughts turn to former leading men: kindhearted Steve Hardy, understanding, soft-spoken Peter Taylor, dynamic Rick Weber (both actors), and the young version of fun and heroic Luke Spencer (not what we see now). It’s highly disappointing and sad that my original beloved, favorite daytime soap has deteriorated with a tunnelvision, laser-like focus on a character such as Sonny.

Some might question why I would still watch a show when I have so much disdain for, and criticism of, it. Oh, I have given up more than once. Sometimes, just sometimes, other characters are on screen who I enjoy. Maybe it’s a polyanna false hope that overall the show might eventually change focus and improve. In the meantime, I am stuck fastforwarding through parts and characters I find objectionable.

Jamesj75 I hear and understand where your coming from especially if you have a long history with the show, it is possible to love a show and still not like everything about it, your no less a fan just cause you don’t love everything or everyone. I’m Spit on the sonny character so it’ depends whose doing the writing. I have issues with favoritism I. E Sam, Carly, sonny and soon nujason where the show revolve around just them four vs everyone else. Or I also hate when they dumb down certain characters to make others look good, like poor anna, she inherited the curse of the baffoon cop as they’ve been ever since Mac became the commish. I remember when anna robert, sean and frisco were out there solving crimes, you know things are bad when they have sam solving anything!! Oh well I’m still hanging in there and I’ll keep loving and some days hating GH.

    Jamesj75 replied

    Thank you, Aria!

I share your sentiments as well regarding the way the show tends to focus on Sonny, Carly, Jason, and Sam, at the expense of other characters. It got to the point where I couldn’t stand Jason or Carly, mainly because they were overexposed and because anything involving Sonny irritated me. Every time Sonny and Carly (and in the past, Jason) were onscreen, I became resentful.

The mob stuff is just too much.

    Timmm replied

Heres the thing though, take Sonny out of the picture and your taking a lot of other characters with him. His character drives other stories. The show is called “General Hospital” but can you imagine if it just focused on the characters at GH right now. I’m not saying you couldnt cast new characters and start a daytime Greys Anatomy but right now in the hospital Patrick is the only character I care about. I hoping Bobbi’s son becomes a doctor. I like him and that would be an interesting guy to write for. Until they decide to go back to their roots, Sonny is relevant.

You can still be a fan of a particular show and not like everything about it, certainly the state of affairs in my case. You can feel the same way about most everything, including a country’s foreign policies. At least we live in a country in which freedom of speech is guaranteed and cherished.

But, no-she justifies his actions and is practically begging for a conjugal visit in Pentonville-haha! I’m tired of hearing her justify all of Jason’s past crimes, too.

Timmm…While I can understand some who did not appreciate this particular presentation of a holiday myth, it is entirely consistent with the character of Dr. O….she simply cannot help herself when it comes to her lack of self-awareness….what would seem to be fun and delightful to her is so not to others. But I don’t believe she actually meant to be offensive…she was merely sharing her own European tradition with the people of Port Charles. And since GH is actually a show meant for adults….now more than ever with some of the subject matter to which we are often subjected…..I don’t really have a problem with this true cultural creature being brought to fore. Besides, think about all the childhood stories we grew up on that featured scary characters….Grimm Fairy Tales, Greek and Roman myths, etc. Not exactly warm and fuzzy were they?….Hansel and Gretel? Little Red Riding Hood? And how about “How the Grinch Stole Christmas?” For once, I can defend Ron C. and his creative decision….it’s certainly not as if this were the most tasteless and appalling incident to which we have be treated this year….FAR from it!!!!!

    Shay replied

P.S. Personally, I found the New Year’s Eve “peepshow” dress worn by Alexis to be far more offensive than “The Krampus!” Her resolution for 2015 truly should be to keep that cleavage undercover for at least 50% of the time, if not more!!!

I don’t know how they’re going to get Sonny (or for that matter, Ava) out of jail for his crimes, but regardless of what happens, Sonny needs to go on the backburner for a little while. He’s been front and center for far too long, and quite honestly, I’ve lost all respect for his character. After that comment he made to Franco about him getting raped in prison the way Michael did, I though to myself “Sonny is a monster”. And while I admire his love for his children and Carly, in all other aspects, I hate him. I don’t understand how he could betray Michael by killing A.J. and then lie about it for months, and still expect to have a relationship with him. I also don’t respect how whenever anyone is a threat to Sonny, his solution is that they have to die. Why is it always Sonny’s enemies dying? Faith, Alcazar, Manny, Anthony, Claudia, etc. have all died, and yet Sonny is still here. They really need to reform Sonny, and while they’re at it, Carly too.

LMAO, I’m with the majority (so far) that is not happy Benard is staying. I’ve come to tolerate some questionable, phoned-in performances. And the saving grace is that under Carlivati’s writing he’s actually NOT the centerpiece character around which all revolves like he was for Guza’s long-meandering reign of terror.

There are several storylines that exist which don’t involve Sonny, so for that I’m grateful. I also like how Sonny essentially dismantled his own life, only has himself to blame. He betrayed Michael by killing A.J., he betrayed Morgan by sleeping with and impregnating Ava, betrayed Olivia in the same act, and then blew Carly’s life up by seducing her (in Michael’s living room, lol) and backing Franco into a corner. The fool was stupid enough to confess on-camera to murder (my favorite part) and now he’s facing some serious charges.

He’s been knocked down MANY major pegs, so I like that. Wish it was his swan song, but I guess not. Still, my previous dream was for Sonny to exit in an execution-style murder, a bullet right between the eyes, but I guess the decreased focus on the character has mellowed me enough where I’d be content to know he was rotting away in prison with all the enemies he stepped on in the past.

    Oh well.

Why would he leave? He is no doubt making excellent money, most likely enjoying new perks with each contract renewal, his character has been front and center for years—if he had longings for prime time or film work he would have left the show ages ago. No he can coast into his retirement years with this gig– unless the show gets cancel or he gets sick of doing it, the man has it made in the shade. There are very few soap actors that have reached his level and influence, so he be really foolish to throw all that away now, which is why I knew he was wasn’t going anywhere because MB is no fool.

I actually think MB did try to break out of soaps…he played Desi Arnaz a few years back and made a few other made for TV movies. His wife seems to be a drive behind him and I think between the two of them they’re still hoping he breaks out…no jail time pun intended. Perhaps they’re waiting to see how his current film is received. In any case, I think you’re right in the sense that it’s steady work/pay and until/if an older actor…not old…but an actor who’s been in the business a few decades…knows if he/she can make a living without a soap to fall back on…or unless they have another talent like Michael Easton has with his successful graphic novels…they’ll probably stay put as long as they can.

His stories have far fewer than most others..
As far as the mob stories goes, they have not been centered around Sonny, they have been centered around the Jeromes, Fluke, Faison, Carsidines..(not Sonny..
Sonny is now up front but alone.. We have a mix with the story..
Duke, Johnny Z, Franco, Jordan, Ava, and not that much Sonny..

Most the stories the past year have been about couples, Franco, Nina, Silas, Sam and Patrick, Ned, Olivia, Michael, Fluke n Tracy, and ‘all’ the vets that returned and their stories, and not that much Sonny..
Maurice and Brian have given great father and son scenes..
Sonny Carly and their and their sons have all given great performances and they have nothing to with the mob, but family..

I apologize CeeCee that I don’t write chapters in one fell swoop like u do so unfortunately my response to your ludicrous post to me comes in increments. You’re sitting in a teachers lounge sharing my comments and having a laugh? I find that disturbing on so many levels…a TEACHER acting like a child…and the fact that you get so bent out of shape about any of this. you find it surprising that MY posts get thru?
You are the master of manipulation. You initiated an argument with me months ago attacking me because I didn’t object to the Nina//Ava storyline like u did…you went on an insulting tirade then twisted it all around. Now…u insinuate I’m emailing you directly???? wow. Is your personal email address hidden in some place I mysteriously discovered. Do u not comment when someone comments to me to show your support of them? Don’t answer…I’m sure you’ll again resort to high indignation and your complete appall at being “stalked.” Save the histrionics…all anyone has to do…which if anyone actually did would be ludicrous…but all anyone could do is see who initiated what with whom and how you’ve continued to get in your digs at me when u can. And to repeat…I’ve ignored it. Until now. And by the way…just for the record…you DO refer to characters ages and what they should or should not wear or do in relation to their age. So…own your position! And stop the drama…no one’s being stalked or harassed…your over the top responses are boring.

    CeeCee replied

Perhaps, Timmm. I like neither. However, as ruthless and controlling Victor is, he is not a cold-blooded killer, is he? I’m not being facetious here, but, did I miss something? Victor looks the part…he’s impressive. I don’t see this diminutive, swarthy, greasy man in the role of a stereotypically powerful kingpin….I get that size is irrelevant, but, my brain, unreasonably, paints a different picture of what a mobster should look like.
As Jeremy says, Stefano is now ‘tame’ comparatively speaking, albeit he did terrorize just about everyone in Salem. He is almost invisible because of his age….he is well into his 80′s. But, in his heyday , Stefano was just as evil as Sonny.
Someone had mentioned that Sonny should think about exercising his role as a grandfather. I agree, please stop the madness. It’s time for Sonny to bounce Rocco (ugh) on his knee….or just go away.
    Happy New year, Timmm.

And there it is…age again. People don’t lose their power because they age…unless they’re ill. If Sonny’s a don…that’s who he is. If u don’t like the character…that’s subjective and understandable. Age shouldn’t have anything to do with it. And…lol…he’s 50 to thereabouts…not 90. (No offense meant to those lucky enough to still be thriving at that age.) stop putting people out to pasture…or…watch a soap where no one ages past 30.

    Rebecca1 replied

Oh. And physical stature doesn’t matter either. Some of the most diminutive people have been the most powerful…while their Igor counterparts have carried much less weight…so to speak.

Please, I have gracefully been avoiding you with all my might. Stop insulting me and go back to your lair. You are the one who has an age problem, not I. I do not bother you. You do not exist, as far as I am concerned. I do not even read your comments. But, you make it impossible because you are inevitably in my inbox. You are annoyingly in my face, lady. Stop communicating with me directly through my email. I do not seek you out. We all age and I should not have to explain or justify my writing….but, I have grandparents and great grandparents who are very young at heart. My grandmother runs a dance studio at the age of 74. It is you who has a chip on her shoulder and is taking it out on me. Are you perchance envy youth? I am in the teacher’s lounge and I have made your writing public….I am choking on my lunch with laughter. It is a SOAP…let me enjoy it !!!! This is harassment. If you cannot be sociable, then do not email me or insult me. I am surprised that Mr. Fairman allows this harassment from one poster to another. Please do something else with your time other than taking whatever ails you on me. Happy New Year. Ha!

    rebecca1 replied

Oh, CeeCee…I responded to your ludicrous message to me but I don’t see it. Do you have a friend in the Michael Fairman office of do they just buy into your act?

No one “stalks” or emails anyone. We don’t have each other’s email addresses. If people post on the same comment we get emailed when someone else has posted as well. We all get those notices. So stop with the drama.

You read my comment in your teacher’s cafeteria and had a laugh? That’s just sad…Funny, but sad.

You don’t “seek” me out? Ha! Another funny. ( who knew you were so funny. I know you’re manipulative…but I didn’t realize funny.) The few times I’ve disagreed with another poster and they’ve retorted directly to me…you’ve managed to show your support for them without directly mentioning my name. Look up the word antagonistic. Then look up passive aggressive.

When you’re allll done…acknowledge that many of your posts are about age…who should wear what or act a certain way because of it. It’s a current theme. I know, I know…your grandparents, etc…

And finally, stop the dramatic responses. They bore me. And… Happy New Year to you too!

@rebecca1….I am responding to your latest post here because a reply link was not provided at your specific point of comment. It is obvious that age-related subjects are a particular hot-button issue for you, as you have stated so more than once on this website. That is all well and good….we come here to share our opinions. However, just because my–or anyone else’s–view doesn’t comport with yours in terms of moralistic or age-appropriate parameters doesn’t mean that we should be excoriated for them every time one of us makes reference to them. Each of us watches GH—or any other show, for that matter—with our own set of preconceived notions based upon numerous factors, hence, whatever personal observations we make are just that, personal, and they should be respected as such. Obviously, I seldom agree with you on most issues, but I definitely don’t upbraid/try to shame you if your posts don’t align with my own beliefs–I attempt to be as cordial and cheerful as possible when we broach our disagreements…after all, this is meant to be a fun and friendly forum to discuss and debate the various aspects of our favorite soaps….in other words, an ENJOYABLE experience!!! And for me, it is….I am a very light-hearted, humorous person, who, incidentally, approaches life in a totally ageless way-I’m also someone who has a background in amongst other things, the fashion/beauty fields, so it is only natural for me to look at GH–or any program–through that prism. (Not that I feel it necessary to explain my perspective to you, but just for the record, there it is…..) Sooo….especially in this present day of HDTV and large screens, I cannot help but notice and comment on such details….as do others who post here, too. Lastly, as I do not conduct myself as an unabashed libertine, some of the more unsavory antics witnessed on a nearly daily basis on GH do tend to disgust me…that would include the habitually hookup-heavy activities of over-the-hill hussies that currently inhabit Port Charles. They’re way overdone, so not entertaining, and often totally demeaning and deplorable….and yes, that extends not only to deeds but the manner in which these “ladies” present themselves, as well. Of course, that is only MY opinion….I certainly don’t expect you to approve of it or applaud it….and therein lies the difference!!!!

    Rebecca1 replied

Shay…let’s start with a given…as you stated…we don’t agree on many things regarding our interpretation of characters…but, for the most part we agree to disagree in an intelligent, friendly manner. So, when I say I’m sick of the talk of age…which to me borders on ageism in the several contexts here…I’m not insulting you…or perhaps i am…indirectly. I enjoy our lively debates and we’ve never succumbed to childish insults and hysteria. However, I find it interesting that as a woman you have mentioned, several times, Nancy Graham’s body in a negative manner. It would be bad enough coming from a male…but a woman who focuses on another’s breasts…cleavage as being too old…unattractive…offensive..to be seen? That’s not the same thing as critiquing fashion. That’s an ageist, sexist statement that only perpetuates the idea that women lose their appeal, sexuality, allure…once they reach a certain age. They don’t have her dressed in a mini skirt, thigh high boots and a belly shirt! She wears business suits or pants suits which are often low cut. I wouldn’t even notice if a few here…less than a handful…no pun intended…wouldn’t mention it. Same goes for the bed hopping. It’s a soap! How many beds did Victoria of REVENGE fall into? Her bodyguard, Pasqual, David. How ‘ bout those old soaps Dynasty, Dallas,,,I didn’t watch either one but the little I knew of them the “adults” weren’t celibate. Point is, yes. I’m tired of reading about Alexis and her boobs or who shouldn’t be so randy because they’re older. You have every right to be bothered by it…and I have my right to express my complete disagreement and, how shall I put this…extreme dislike of such a constant bash. And for the record I’ve worked for quite a few magazines…so I’m well aware of fashion, fashion editors and opinion. I just don’t care what the consensus is…nor do I agree that they don’t do fashion layouts with sophisticated, mature women who show a lot more than cleavage. You’ are clear what you don’t approve of Shay…you don’t like ethnic characters, socioeconomic ally lower class characters, people who have several partners or older women’s cleavage. Lol. I don’t feel the same way. I like different characters…or dislike certain characters…for how they come across to me as people. Their heart and soul. Boobs. Not so much…

    Shay replied

@rebecca1…Oh, where to begin, WHERE to begin???? Well, first off, thank you so much for that backhanded compliment referring to my creative efforts….it was most appreciated!!! (Although it really was not necessary to derisively refer to those who may have occasion to enjoy them…..this is not the only time you have done that!) Secondly, on the subject of NLG, I would not be one bit surprised if she (or any other people in the industry, for that matter) regularly read(s) viewer feedback here at MFSoaps….being prominently featured on these threads, and quite frankly, given her own liberal and savvy use of social media, I think she is probably very aware of where/when she trends, regardless of the subject being broached. I would also surmise that despite the nature of the comments, they would not astound her, since according to certain friends who read daytime publications and other soap scuttlebutt, Ms. Grahn is actually pretty prone to making pronouncements in reference to her famous physical endowments, not to mention the fact they have/had(?) their own Twitter account or Facebook page, “fanbase,” or whatever….she seems absolutely delighted by the attention “they” receive…. To my knowledge, this “publicity” has been going on for awhile now….so at this point, I should expect that NLG has become accustomed to both the yeas and nays of her cleavage-heaving activities….moreover, were she terribly bothered by negative reaction, I should think she may have toned-down her peepshow act by this juncture in time, yet on the contrary, she appears to have doubled-down in displaying those oft-derided D-cups with daring defiance!!!! (Simply saying….) Furthermore, were Grahn familiar with my vivid “reviews,” she would also be aware that I post extremely complimentary comments when Alexis—or anyone on GH, for that matter—looks smashing, as I recently did on a truly lovely wardrobe choice Ms. Davis donned…I was as equally effusive in my praise as, shall we say, my more flip, less enthusiastic reactions. (By the way, she should wear burgundy—rather marsala, Pantone’s color of the year!— far more often….that hue totally works for her….) But that’s neither here nor there….what I find so objectionable in your recent, unrelenting rebukes about the perceived ageism in my (and others….) remarks—which, of course, I heartily and completely agree you have every right to express— is that along with your deep disapproval seems to come the implication that we dare not again utter our opposing (and according to you, offending….) views simply because you don’t like them! (Or when we provide other observations that displease you, you tsk-tsk us or make judgments on our hearts, psyches, etc. based upon your own criteria of what is a “correct” emotion or reaction to a particular situation….and that is a vastly different thing than commenting upon or critiquing–even in a brutally biting fashion—a fictional character or any other aspect of a TV show….incidentally, would you like access to my personal profiles on Amazon, Sephora Rouge, Neiman-Marcus, Nordstrom, etc. so as to further analyze my various tastes and preferences???? You appear to be enormously intent on keeping track of and enumerating them….LOL..) At any rate, I am honestly not being harsh or unpleasant—just candid—with you, because I have very much enjoyed our vigorous debates over this last year or so—it’s been a genuine joy more often than not, and in the rare happenstance when there is a flicker of shared unanimity, it’s a real kick….I look forward to continuing that…especially the generally friendly—and even playful—disagreements, as I so relish those verbal challenges with you…..or anyone else who cares to make an intelligent and intellectual back-and-forth, but I simply cannot abide personal sniping because I always do my best not to respond in kind….it’s just really not nice, and it is something I have mightily sought to avoid not only with you but other posters, as well…particularly those for whom I have developed an affection!!!! (Additionally, I find online “tiffs” to be extremely embarrassing…in spite of my wild wit, I do believe in keeping my cyber correspondence with others classy and cordial……..) That tendency is so ingrained in me that I frequently hold my tongue and sit on my typing fingers when I encounter those sometime teeth-gritting assertions that run totally anathema to mine, even if I want to respond with every fiber of my being….there were a couple in the past month that were just screaming to be addressed….but I resisted!!!! (I also make it a practice to not immediately respond to more critical remarks directed at me until I have the opportunity for careful consideration in my reply….hence, the day-long delay in getting back to you.) Finally, the dig about my sincerely-intended post to k/kay was uncalled for….anyone who regularly reads my posts is familiar with the notion that I have repeatedly exchanged warm and appreciative words with her long before Tuesday….I certainly was not attempting to gain favor to my way of thinking by sending her a clever message…that is not my m.o., so please refrain from making those insulting assumptions in the future. Thank you!!!

    Rebecca1 replied

Oh Shay…I just wrote you a reply as long as yours to me…then lost the entire thing when my iPad battery went down. Beyond frustrated and way too busy to recreate it now. I probably will get back to you. Suffice to say I find your reply lacks logic, is maddening and I disagree with everything you’ve said, every point you raised.

    Shay replied

Well, that abridged version works for me, rebecca1….especially the last sentence….it says it all! (No need to go to the trouble of recreating your former dissertation, although I can relate to that situation, as I have lost more than one of my own “masterpieces” in the same manner…..) I’m more than happy to just leave it at that short but not sweet summary, although I do have one more thing to add: Your glittering “generalities” about my personal viewing “preferences” are beyond misleading. While many GH characters for whom I hold absolutely no regard may fall under the “umbrella descriptions” that you list, there are plenty of others who do not. In all candor, I probably loathe or at least beg indifference to a minimum of 50% of the cast at any given time. Hence, there are a lot of characters of ALL varieties who simply don’t appeal to me for an assortment of reasons. Having said that, when a program is well done, none of the factors you state applies. For example, I was barmey for Eastenders, which was solely about London’s working class of all sorts of ethnicities. Ditto for “Scott and Bailey,” a gritty Manchester-based series about two female cops as the main characters….one over 50 and the other younger, but quite candidly, a real slag, and I mean that with nothing but affection. Another favorite is “Death in Paradise,” about a totally out-of-his-element British (white male) detective who is posted to a Caribbean island chock full of minorities and last but not least, my newest viewing pleasure, “Jewel in the Crown,” an acclaimed English miniseries (filmed in the 1980′s) which details India’s waning days of the British Raj. Then, of course, there’s also my ongoing enchantment of Downton Abbey of which you are already highly aware, which features a wonderful mix of “upstairs/downstairs” types. So you see, it’s not about the “who” but the “what,” which in my case includes engaging characters, talented actors, well-written dialogue, absorbing storylines and excellent production values: THAT’S what “sends” me!!!….The “identity politics” of a show are not what make or break it for me. Just wanted to clarify since you seem to have leapt to erroneous conclusions about what considerations pique or deter my personal interest when it comes to my choice of entertainment.

    rebecca1 replied

oh…and one more thing, Shay??? my “tiff” with the other poster who we shall not mention…started because I DARED like the Nina/Ava storyline and was harangued and “screamed” at for doing so. That’s what started THAT whole ball rolling. So, where was your feeling that everyone’s entitled to his/her own opinion then? It wasn’t discussed in a friendly manner…go back and read those posts if you care to. If not, I understand. But please don’t be a hypocrite.

It’s quite simple for me. Maurice Benard is a great actor, and I like watching great actors on my show. So I’m glad he’s staying. Sonny Corinthos is an all-time iconic soap opera character, and there are still plenty of interesting stories to tell for hopefully many more years to come.

Nothing against Mr. Bernard but I would not miss Sonny at all.

Truth be told, I like Maurice and dont mind Sonny. BUT, I would love for Maurice to take some time off and do some time and have a new powerful corporate family move into PC and go head to head with the Q’s like the Abbots and Newmans over at Y&R. There would be less blue collar violence and more corporate undermining. Here are the two questions for any to answer. One, do you want to be similar to Y&R? Two, you lose a lot of characters if you put the mob on the back burner.

Or, Timmm, they could become involved in politics and corporate…..bring some of the CARBONARI Secret Society in PC……not such a stretch from Cosa Nostra. Right up Sonny’s alley….would he go head to head with Michael?…..perhaps Fluke, if he somehow manages to pull ELQ from under Michael.

I love the history of ELQ but since Edward died I feel as if the company died to. The Tracy and Michael struggle has been lame and has been in the background since Alice’s heart issues. I know Michael has daddy issues and Tracy has Fluke issues but this company sits and know one is steering the ship! Ned should lead ELQ period! He is smart and Edward loved him. I cannot remember if Edward left his wishes about his company. Tracy is strong and capable but her and Edward didnt have the closest relationship and I dont recall him ever asking her for business advice. Have Ned fight off Fluke, Sonny, Larry, whomever has their sights on ELQ. Keep Michael out of it, he is too young and weak to run a corporation.

Proud to say I’m an ex-GHer as of a week ago and, with this news, am even more glad I made the break. I stuck by and supported the show for several years but just can’t waste my time on such nonsense any longer. It’s very liberating to be free. For anyone else on the fence, try it. Only way I’m ever going back is if I hear about a writing change. Good luck GH fans.

We all can make our choices and you made yours. I’ve stuck through GH good or bad. Some of the stories are head scratchers but I respect Frank and Ron because I truly believe those two kept GH from being cancelled. I’ll take this product over another annoying cooking show!

Totally agree about the cooking shows. And let me add the talk shows to that mix. For me, it’s freeing up an hour of my time and I’m rather enjoying that. Wish I could have stuck with it but, all I can say is, I tried.

so what was Sonny’s sentence for murder and coverup, letting someone else take the rap, covering up who shot Connie too. Then there’s the kidnapping of Ava, attempted murder of Ava, attempted murder of Franko and umpteen other crimes they haven’t charged him with over the years…???

so GH will now be a hospital/jail soap?? GHJ :-)
