54 January 18th, 2013 Meredith Vieira Said To Be In Talks For New Daytime Talk Show! Do We Need Another One?

Meredith Vieira, the former co-host of NBC’s “Today” show, who last week announced that she was leaving her game show host duties on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, said in a statement, “I am about to embark on a new adventure with NBC.”

It is has now been revealed through Media Encoder blog of The New York Times that Vieira and NBCUniversal are in preliminary development plans to potentially launch a new daytime talk show series for Vieira that would start no sooner than September 2014.

According to the N. Y. Times, “If  discussions bear fruit, Ms. Vieira could show up at 11 a.m. in some local markets, the same hour that The View is shown.”  As daytime fans know, Vieira was a co-host of ABC Daytime’s The View for its first nine years.   However, the time slots NBC syndication executives are most likely eyeing are those occupied by The Jeff Probst Show, which is televised at 2 p.m. in many markets.   A spokeswoman for NBC’s syndication arm declined to comment on development plans.”

Vieira was seen recently by soap fans when she returned for a guest appearance as Bree Flanders on General Hospital to usher in Lynn Herring’s return as Lucy Coe and as part of the cross-promotion which has GH stars appearing on “Millionaire” in honor of the soaps upcoming 50th Anniversary.

So what do you think if Vieira got her own daytime talk show?  Let us know!

Really MR, the only career move you can think of is to go back to daytime talk? I wish her well, but the market is crowded with Oprah wanna be’s and I don’t know what she can bring that is new and different. But yeah anything got to be better than Jeff Probst-

MR is Meredith Vieira’s initials when you type an R instead of the V- thanks for noticing my dumb mistake, but if you didn’t know who I meant, then I’m in good company.

I love Jeff Probst show! He has Days cast members on quite a bit, and his show is actually entertaining!

My apologizes to all you Jeff Probst fans- to be honest I only watched the first few shows, and they were not all that great, but perhaps it has improved. I love him on Survivor but as a talk host show he seemed a bit like a fish out of water when I watched. But if he is getting better and promotes the soaps then more power to him. Live long and prosper all you Jeff Probst fans.

    SZima replied

I’ve tried to suffer through it a couple times…I think it’s just awful.
So if she is to replace him, rather than be in addition to him…and everyone else, I guess it’s fine.
There are STILL too many talk shows on the air, but one of these years that phase has to end, doesn’t it?

  4. Scott (ATWT Fan) says:

Meredith should honestly return to The Today Show. She excelled there and was an excellent choice. Do I think she needs her own talk show? No. I don’t. At this point, we do have enough. NBC failed with Daytime Talk. They have The Ellen DeGeneres Show and then gave it to ABC affiliates. Didn’t they learn?

As long as her show would not be a replacement for a soap (Days if it is a definite deal with NBC) I don’t care since I don’t watch or dvr any of them.

I cannot stand either the Today Show or GMA. I really like CBS This Morning. It does hard news stories, some entertainment & fluff but without all the stupidity and crap of the other two (believe me, I was stunned that I actually liked what Gail King brings to the show). Every time I watch Today or GMA I get annoyed because they try to cram so much in that every segment seems rushed, with the food ones being the worst. So, MR returning to the today show would not effect my viewing of the show.

So, any network adding a different talk show is nothing different than what has always been daytime TV…

doubt there will ever be daytime politics even-though it would be a good change.. :)
Outside of our soaps which run an hour what else could they cheaply fill daytime with??
    Perhaps exercise or yoga lol

It depends on the talk show. meredith shouldn’t treat her audience members the way anderson cooper’s treats his on his failed talk show. It’s great that blanderson’s talk show got thrown to the trash! he has no class and comes off as very unlikeable and petty. all his old money and he has no dignity. he comes off very condescending to his mostly female audience members w/c must alienate his already paltry viewers even more from his repelling personality. he lavishes attention on these superficial real housewives and he seems to get along too much w/ pathetic andy cohen. blanderson is not someone who should be on a talk show. cooper has damaged his brand. no one can take him seriously and he should be fired at cnn to revamp and save that floundering network. the talk is a good talk show bec it has an Asian american and African americans and a foreigner’s perspectives. the tv landscape doesn’t need a talk show w/ 1 white personality only. meredith can’t carry a talk show by herself. she needs a team of women around her and her talk show would succeed. it would be great if she molded her talk show after the talk and had perspectives from Asian american and African american and latino women.

I think there are to many talk shows on already.I feel like most of them aren’t worth the time it takes to sit down and watch them. They have taken several soaps off the air that had millions of die hard fans, and replace them with talk shows that talk about nothing and can’t hold anyones attention for more than five mins. The networks don’t want to pay to produce any real shows, and heaven forbid if they were to need real writers and actors. To me there just isn’t much on t.v. any more. You have reality shows which are not real, just a bunch of junk that they film like honey booboo (so stupid)and talk shows where every one is talking over each other so you can’t understand anything that any one is saying so why watch. The networks need to figure out some real shows instead of all this junk. And that is what I feel like most of what they show is. Just plain junk,so of my home movies are more intersting.

BRB I feel your pain- but if thought Honey Boo Boo was the a low point in television, I recently saw an ad for a show called Double Divas. The premise of the show is about these women who go across the country to fit women into a proper bra. Of course they don’t show normal woman, but these women whose boobs are about 5 times the size of Dolly Parton’s. I can’t imagine who would watch this, except maybe teenage boys – but given the state of TV, no doubt it will be really big hit-

Prime time network TV is full of great shows..

Those B shows are on the low rung cable channels that run on those type of stupid reality shows, and they do have many viewers ..
And daytime TV has always been soaps and mainly talk, games, etc none cast/scripted shows..
This season on prime time netwrok TV the shows are very good..

    Christine replied

Double Divas, huh? Boy am I glad I gave up reality TV when I did. Ha! Ha! What will they think of next?

  19. Dmitri says:

I don’t really care, as all soaps are doing well and DOOL got renewal through summer of next year. I even enjoy Jeff Probst show. BUT, I don’t think it’s necessary, and I probably will not be watching. I think the most appropriate move would be to cancel The Chew and The Talk, because those got soaps off of the air. I think The Chew will probably last another season or two, but it has very low ratings, and won’t be on for much longer. I say that The Talk and Katie should be canceled, and Meredith can have her talk show, and that way, only hers and Jeff’s will be on. Good amount of Talk TV right there.

    Christine replied

Dmitri, the deal is for NBC. I WOULD worry about the future of DOOL after “summer of next year” because Meredith’s show would be fall of 2014 at the earliest.

meredith’s daytime talk show aspirations are probably encouraged by the talk’s success. a tv show w/ racially diverse women can be a hit. the talk should encourage more racial diversity from hollywood and not the same monochromatic tv shows w/ only white people. Scandal from abc is a ratings success w/ an African american leading female char portrayed by pretty fashionista kerry washington! It’s a really soapy primetime show w/ more racial diversity than what hollywood usually offers from any of its films and tv shows.

Scandal draws 3.52 million viewers for its 18 to 49 demo and 8.4 million total viewers! Scandal typically ranks as the NUMBER 1 show on 10 p.m. Thursday w/ the 18 to 34 demo! Great accomplishment there for Kerry Washington especially bec she’s the only African american lead actress on primetime that is until meagan goode’s show w/ that stupid victor garber.

Scandal has a healthy number of people tweeting during the broadcast. Scandal “parties” on Facebook have friends watching and commenting w/ each other. The episode before its hiatus generated nearly 3900 tweets per minute and a total of 157601 tweets. Lead actress kerry washington and the cast of supporting actors live tweet during scandal’s episodes w/ the audience!

According to the nyt hollywood executives are less eager to discuss Scandal’s success among African american audiences. Scandal is the highest rated scripted drama among African americans with 10.1 percent of black households and an average of 1.8 million viewers watching during the first half of the season. Typical RACISM from the “enlightened” crowd of hollywood! if scandal failed then tons of “tolerant” hollywood people would claim that a dramatic tv show w/ a racial minority lead actress could not succeed. the racists of hollywood must be furious w/ scandal’s success!

hollywood’s racist to actors and to the audience w/ their lack of portrayals of racial minorities. The relevant context is that people of color are already under represented and then actors of color get typecasted w/ stereotypical roles. Olivia is not a stereotypical black female char who has attitude and is there for comedic relief and yet the show is a ratings success. Scandal’s success should encourage hollywood to create more tv shows w/ racial minority leading chars who are not stereotypes!

NO NO NO!! The market is saturated with that crap!

Once again I ask: (I promise I won’t post this anymore)

    1. How many societal problems can be discussed over and over and over?
    2. How many times can we see the same actor plugging his new movie or book?
    3. How many shows do we need where a bunch of women holler at each other and gush over their favorite politicians?
    4. Pretty soon we’ll have so many talk shows that every woman in America who needs one, will be able to get a makeover.

I guess they’re going to try and “lure” her with big bucks and a big name producer like they did with KC. BTW, the big name producer is gone; and I don’t think her show is the overwhelming hit that ABC wanted.

I agree with the poster above. I do not care about talk shows. I do not watch them except occasionally Steve Harvey or Ellen. I like Meredith and wish her well, but for Pete’s sake no more talk shows!!

You would think with the success of the current nighttime soaps; the daytime execs would invest in good writing and pay to keep their vets (Y & R is killing itself with these newbies who look hot but can’t act their way out of a paper bag) on their daytime shows. Everyone wants the next Oprah hit talk show and it isn’t happening!

There just aren’t enough daytime viewers to spread around. The soap fans are fiercely loyal to their shows and will quickly change the channel if you mess with their shows. ABC found that out the hard way when OLTL was cancelled and viewers could not be TRAINED to watch whatever replaced (in your face Brian Frons and Ann Sweeney!) it.
