Michael, I agree 100% with you on your #1 pick for worst ever moment/decision by producers and writers. It is not only the worst decision of 2010 but of the entire soap history. I wish VH and ESS the very best and hope they win Emmy awrads for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. But, I sincerely wish that CG and JP (formerly on ATWT) should never even be nominated. And, It would be amazing if they are rated the worst ever team in soap history. They compeltely deserve that dishonor after they killed one of the most beautiful love stories (LURE) to ever grace the soap screen, with the horrendous ending.

I agree 100% with you. LuRe was the best couple and didn’t deserve what JP & CG gave them.

I couldn’t agree more!As a long time ATWT watcher this had to be the worst ending in the History of Soaps! To kill off one half of the best couple EVER on soaps and leave the other half devastated and alone was a slap in the face to all who loved Luke and Reid and their wonderful and unique love story!

I definitely agree with # 1 and # 2. Chris didn’t deserve to live and Reid didn’t deserve to die.

Although in my mind, there was never a train. Reid made it back from Bay City with heart for Chris and Luke and Reid are living happily together.

  3. George says:

Michael, I also agree 100% with you on your # 2 pick for worst ever moment/decision by producers and writers. It is absolutely appaling that CG and JP actually killed one of the best characters (Reid) on ATWT, left the best and most loved caharcater (Luke) to a life of perpetual pain, suffering, and misery; and the biggest irony is that all this was done to save probably one of the worst and most boring character (Chris) so that Katie (who changed husbands at the drop of a hat) could have one more man toy to add to her ever growing collection. All the three gay characters (Luke, Reid, and Noah) got miserable endings while every straight couple was given a happy ending (including the grand old Lucinda and John). Now, that’s 100% homophobia and 0% consideration and respect for LURE and NUKE fans world-wide.

Van Hansis was so perfect and so beautiful in those scenes of Luke mourning his boyfriend’s reid death that I can’t fathom it was the worst moment. That’s sure that Luke’s story ended sadly for him, being alone and very depressed, but Van Hansis did an amazing work and for me that was the most memorable moment in the soaps.

    mepariseau replied

It’s not the acting that made it the worst, it was the story of Reid dying that made it the worst.

ESS and Van hit it out the park with their acting and they both deserve an Emmy for it, but there should be no credit given to JP and CG for the “story” to be considered the best of 2010.

ATWT should have allowed Luke to seek comfort with his ex, Noah during the final episode. It didn’t have to mean that he “forgot” Reid, just that Noah could finally be the guy that I (and Luke) fell in love with in the beginning: A standup guy, who would be there during Luke’s time of need.

You have to be kidding!!!!! Luke loved Reid….don’t you understand? You don’t substitute one love with another.Luke would NEVER go back to Noah.Reid and Luke became better for loving each other!, so bite your tongue!

    traciamc replied

Absolutely not! It was completely inappropriate with the way their relationship had progressed over the past year even before Reid came to town…it started with the election and Mason! Noah had just told Luke that he couldn’t even be friends with him, so for Luke to seek comfort with Noah? No. And Noah kissing him 2 days after Reid’s death and inviting Luke to LA – also completely inappropriate.

I can see Luke and Noah remaining friends in the future, but not now. Luke has a lot to work through. Reid’s death was idiotic to begin with, but everything that happened after it was ridiculous and poorly written. The ONLY thing making any of it decent was Van’s acting!

    Nicole replied

I’m not sure what you mean by “seek comfort”. Noah did comfort Luke as a friend. That was appropriate given their bond, but if you mean they should have hooked up, then eww. I am a complete Nuke fan, but that would’ve been not-cool so soon after Reid’s death. I hated the ending all around, but given what happened to Reid, it was appropriate that Noah and Luke reconciled as just friends for now.

Michael i definitely agree with #1 & #2. Chris & Katie had zero chemistry together which is ironic considering how many husbands she’s had & had chemistry with every one of them & he was one of the worst written soap characters on there, i don’t know how many times he was written out & recast.
Then Luke finally fell in love with a guy who appreciated him for who he was & encouraged him to be himself & love who he is & to not apologize for that & they decided in the middle of the “big” triangle to go into a different direction & not use Noah any, & use Luke & Reid as only props for Chris Hughes & his stupidity.
Of course Van Hansis & Eric Sheffer Stevens knocked it out of the ballpark with their acting & should be rewarded for taking the crap writing they got & made us cry & yell for them still to this day & CG & JP should be run out of town for their writing & decisions they made to destroy a 54 year old institution.

It’s NOT Chris’ fault that Reid died! As a fan of the Hughes family for many years, including Kim, Bob and CHRIS, etc, I was glad to see them front and center as ATWT wrapped up in a heartbreaking, Emmy-worthy storyline. Why is everyone focusing on trashing Chris, and not recognizing the brilliant performances by Kathryn Hays, Don Hastings, Terri Conn, Ellen Dolan, Scott Holmes, etc? Michael Fairman – you singled out Van Hansis in your best moments of 2010 (rightfully so) but I’m disappointed that you didn’t also make the point to acknowledge the other positives, particularly that this storyline gave great material to Bob/Kim and the rest of the Hughes clan in your end-of-the-year wrapup . Instead you decided to rile up the Lure fans and invite another round of Chris bashing and claims that Katie didn’t deserve a happy ending (which I also vehemently disagree with especially given that she lost her husband Brad).

Don’t get me wrong – I was a fan of Reid/ESS right from the get-go and would have preferred it if he didn’t die. But I don’t blame Chris at all – the writers could have easily let Reid live and Chris get his new heart but they chose not to. It wasn’t a choice of killing off Chris OR Reid. It wasn’t one or the other.

But I’ll play the ‘Reid or Chris game’ for a moment… With all the Lure talk of Chris *deserving* to die (a bit harsh, no?), isn’t that proving the point that the writers made the right choice? If no one “cared” about Chris (despite ATWT viewers seeing this character grow up over the years – admittedly in a SORAS’d/recasted manner), then his death wouldn’t have the emotional punch that Reid’s did. People would be “cheering” his death and it would have had the exact opposite effect that a soap opera death of a beloved character should have. Even though this outcry over Reid’s death irks me at time since it tends to get focused on bashing Chris/Katie, it just proves that Reid’s the exact, intended impact that it should have had… It rocked viewers’ hearts to the core, as a character death near the end of a show should do.

    Jeannette replied

Of course it wasn’t a ‘Reid or Chris’ choice- the writers could easily have had BOTH characters live. And I didn’t want Chris to die- but neither did I want Katie to get stuck in a piss-poor rebound relationship with Chris. ATWT overplayed their hand by acting like Chris and Katie are some epic love story. They’ll be divorced in a year at most. Hopefully Katie cheats on Chris with Simon.

We didn’t want Chris to die, there was no reason for anyone to die because this soap was going off forever.Doesn’t it seem strange that they would destroy the most popular couple in daytime/And for what? To leave us long time viewers with such sad thoughts of a show that was on for 54 years.if anyone in charge had listened to the fans, Luke and Reid would be living together for a long time.I can’t accept the horrible ending so I’m writing my own and it will be done in a few weeks.

Why I feel Chris deserved to die was that he refused to seek treatment for his condition. As a doctor he knew the consequences of his actions, but instead of telling his parents, he went golfing. Are you kidding me?

And if Chris wouldn’t have needed a transplant, then Reid would not have been on the RR tracks to get hit by the train. That is why Chris is blamed for Reid’s death (all goes back to his refusing treatment)

If it had to be Katie with a new husband (what number will Chris Hughes be) or Luke to finally have a great life partner then I say that Luke deserves it more. It is not that Katie doesn’t deserve happiness, just that she doesn’t deserve it at the expense of Luke’s.

i was always a Hughes family fan, they’d bring Chris on & he’d be on a year before they’d write him off again, they never knew how to write a great story for Chris that made you want to like him.
but what they did at the end of the show made everybody forget the death of Nancy Hughes, a lady who’d uttered the first words on the show & was on the show the whole 54 years when the actress died in real life. the memorial service they did should of been all about her & showed more old clips of her over the years.

    traciamc replied

I never saw anyone say that Chris “deserved” to die, although in a way, he hid his illness from everyone and as a doctor, that was irresponsible and stupid. I agree, though…neither he nor Reid needed to die. He could have most definitely have gotten his heart some other way.

Nancy Hughes (and Helen Wagner, God rest her soul) had died…there didn’t need to be another death for impact. That should have been the focus. Instead, it was almost swept under the rug and didn’t get nearly the attention it should have. She was a legend and her death should have been treated as such.

As far as Katie, she did deserve a happy ending. But Chris and Katie had no chemistry, and their relationship seemed to me to be thrown together. Just my opinion. I wish that they had kept Simon in Oakdale, but that was not to happen.

No one has said Chris deserved to die. But, Reid should never have been killed; and Luke should never have been left devastated. Going by the majority of viewers and fans opinions; Chris and Katie were no match for Luke and Reid as love interests. And, Chris was one of the most boring characters (also acted very badly); while Luke and Reid were the best and most loved characters (and acted brilliantly). CG and JP made a mockery of the ATWT loyal fan base by ending a wonderful love story in a horrendous manner. If they knew that Luke and Reid were red hot property of ATWT, and they were convinced that Reid’s death and Luke’s emotional aftermath would have a lasting impression on fans; then they could not have been more wrong and stupid than they already were. They could have taped the whole death episode as a dream; and when Luke did wake up from his horrible nigthmare, he would have the love of his life, Reid for the ages. In that way, everyone would have been a winner. ATWT would have gone out with a bang and high note; the actors would have had a shot at Emmy’s, CG and JP would be held in high regard by fans worl-wide, and most of all the fans would have been extremely happy that a show dared to depict a beautiful love story in a magnificent manner. But, the truth is, that was never meant to be. CG and JP succeeded in making most of the ATWT fans hate them with a passion.

Katie and Chris (probably the worst pair on ATWT) definitely did not deserve a happy ending at the expense of Luke and Reid (perhaps the best couple of all soaps in 2010). If you have genuine love for someone, you don’t jump into another man’s arms in less than a year of your of beloved’s death (as in Katie-Brad-Chris story). Thank God! that CG and JP, as stupid as they are, at least had the sense to not push Luke into Noah’s arms immediately after Reid’s death.

Seeing them smile at each other, be in each others space, helping each other was mesmerizing to watch.Eric and Van are both great actors, but Vans acting when Reid stopped breathing ripped the heart out of me.If Van doesn’t win an Emmy somethings wrong….and i’m missing him!

I’m going to completely agree with Michael’s choice for #2 and #1 worst moments. Just reading all of the comments regarding Michael’s spot on choices almost got me crying again. I still miss ATWT, Van Hansis, Eric Sheffer Stevens. I’ll never forget the heartbreaking scenes where Luke (the mesmerizing and the amazingly talented Van Hansis) said good-bye to Reid (the equaling mesmerizing and the amazingly talented Eric Sheffer Stevens) as Reid breathed his last breath. I was bawling so hard that even thinking about it now, I’m starting to tear up just writing this.

Chris Goutman was just picked by several panelists on DC Confidential’s year end review for 2010 as the worst show killer of all. That is a distinction that will stay with him for as long as he lives. In all honesty, I hope to God he never works in the entertainment business again. I also thank God that Maria Arena Bell (executive producer/head writer for Y&R) totally laughed off the idea that Goutman would be doing some directing at Y&R. At least that was one of the smartest decisions she has made this year.

If Van and Eric do get nominated for Emmy’s and actually pick up those Emmy’s, I hope to God that they don’t even think to thank Goutman or the writers at ATWT.

That’s all I gotta say. There are some things I’d love to write about Goutman but in reality, they’re very unprintable. I’ll just leave you to imagine what I would have said about Goutman, who gutted our show and gutted LuRe!

Fath and Lavosier are awful so it’s great that they’re on this list.

On Air On Soaps team should have included Franco’s hilariously bad, “artsy,” pretentious death on GH.

It’s expected that the On Air On Soaps team mentioned how the same gender couples were treated on OLTL and ATWT since that upset a large amount from their audience. But at the very least those soaps actually had same gender couples that showed affection, even if they were dumped from the canvas or had a storyline their audience hated. On Air On Soaps should have put B&B on their worst list bec it is worse than OLTL and ATWT for its refusal to include any gay and lesbian characters in LA fashion! B&B has never had such a large cast full of useless on contract, recurring and guest soap thespians, yet not a single char is gay or lesbian. Not only is that unrealistic, but it’s pathetic. Yet B&B is never mentioned whenever the soap press complain abt lgbtq storylines. For its lack of gay and lesbian chars in fashion, that alone makes B&B the worst. Yet there are other terrible aspects of B&B.

Statue Howen vs. Statue Rick was on this list! Great!

Amber’s pointless return. Dumb Thomas. Boring writing for SJB’s Aggie. No storylines for Felicia. The appalling trio of Bill Junior, Liam and Katie. They should be on this list.

As a staunch Luke/Noah fan, I still agree with Michael completely on #1. ATWT left its three gay characters dead or alone, while nearly every straight couple got a happy ending. No matter how any of us feel about the Luke/Reid romance, the storyline was badly mishandled, and the ending was cheap and ridiculous. The show belittled everything the Luke/Noah romance meant to so many people for years, shortchanged a major legacy character, and put far too much emphasis on a brand-new character (however interesting or well-liked).

Yes, the actors (all three of them) did amazing work, and Van Hansis in particular deserves every award in the book. But what was the point, other than to make Luke miserable?

    Reply

    Lu replied

The point? To get Van Hansis crying, because he’s brilliant at it. I mean, it was a cheap thrill, in my opinion.

And a very, very stupid point, because he’s brilliant at everything he did on that show anyway. They didn’t need to do this in particular, to get a great performance, or a dramatic ending out of the gay storyline. I would have much rather had something character-driven, and about Luke’s REAL emotions about his new love Reid, and his first love, Noah. Not what Luke felt like just because Reid was now dead. They turned Reid into an absolute saint after his death, which he wasn’t. He was hilarious, snarky, rude, intelligent, and entertaining. But perfect, pleasant, thoughtful? No. If he was, we’d not have liked him so much. He wouldn’t be “Reid.” I mean, the emotions that went with losing someone were very relatable, (and flawlessly acted), but I could hardly swallow all the glorious praise everyone had for him. It just didn’t make any sense to me.

Also, I thought it was painfully obvious how they rushed (and yet didn’t show much of) Luke and Reid’s romance, so that they were “in love” with each other by the end. I don’t blame people at all for wanting to see them in love. I certainly enjoyed the years I was afforded seeing Luke and Noah that way. But I felt we were only told, not shown, that they were in love. And it was way too cliched that they were all of a sudden made for each other, and then wham, Reid gets killed. Of course, on the very same day he says “I love you.”

That said, I feel cheated also because I wanted Luke and Noah back together eventually anyway. I know there are people who were rather violently against that, and that’s okay. But I just liked what I liked, and there’s nothing wrong with that either. It wasn’t because I didn’t like Reid, it was because I just liked Nuke. But I felt that the show was completely and utterly unsympathetic at all to Noah’s blindness, never displaying his point of view, only Luke’s, making Noah look like an absolute villain to so many people. He’d gone blind, and yet the only person we felt sorry for, was Luke. Thus leaving Luke free to want someone else, who the show ended up taking away from him in the end anyway. All to get Van Hansis crying. None of the three ended up happy in the end scenario. Noah was last shown leaving the only place he’d really felt he had a home, or a decent family, and still hopelessly in love with Luke. Luke shown grieving over the loss of what he thought was his future: Reid. And Reid no chance at all.

I found all three actors to be engaging, and to me, the acting was the one and ONLY good thing about the way that ended.

Yes, yes, and YES to every word of this.

Seriously, the way Reid was lionized after his death reminded me of many years ago when my great-aunt died and a preacher who never met her eulogized her by saying she never complained, never gossiped. Er, yes she did. She loved griping and she LOVED gossiping! And the people who knew her knew that about her. They didn’t know that person the preacher was talking about. That’s what ATWT did with Reid. Terrible, terrible storytelling, saved, as usual, by amazing acting all around.

    George replied

I agree with you 100%. I don’t think the LURE and NUKE fans will ever understand why CG and JP decided that the best and most loved character (Luke) on ATWT had to be left alone, miserable, and devastated in the end. This is the worst ever ending in soap history for a character who was perhaps one of the best in daytime. If CG and JP have any shame and pride left in them, they should never work in soap production and writing. I pity the shows that will hire them, because they are sure to bite the dust in no time. One thing that is definite is that I will never watch anything that is even remotely associated in any form with the two biggest idiots on this planet, CG and JP. They truly deserve the title of worst show and character killers in all of soap history.

And, I wonder how much thay are concerned what you or I think. It’s tough when we get so invested with the characters. I agree with Michael’s picks of best and worst. But again, it is one man’s opinion, even if he is a professional. I do think Jerry verDorn is doing a great job of sustaining Clint’s diabolical and methodical dirty work in his revenge against Bo and Nora. Obviously, he has gone too far. Now, every character is being zapped in one way or another. He is very suble in the way he sets his victims up, and then plays the good guy that everyone talks to , including his brother Bo, who he wants to hurt the most. I think this is written and played out so well because of Jerry. And , same show, Florencia has proved what a gifted actress she is in an untenable story that was so cruel. Well, this is only one girl’s opinion. We shall see at awards time…..

Um, who cares about the token gays ATWT introduced in the last few years?? Soap operas were built on romance and love, not gay. I am more disturbed that LISA didn’t even have a scene in the finale. Tom and Margo were reduced to hand-wringing pathetic parents with no life beyond that of their absent children. Lily and Holden acted like random strangers. Barbara spent her last moments dancing like a moron with Henry, instead of relating with her family. This show had a year to prepare for its demise, and it was disappointing on every level, the LEAST of which was Luke’s angst.
