158 April 13th, 2015 On General Hospital, Is Valerie Spencer About To Come Between Dante and Lulu?

Courtesy/ABC

Valerie Spencer (Brytni Sarpi) is not to happy with her newly found Spencer clan!

After Luke (Anthony Geary) terrorized the poor girl and she watched her mother Patricia Spencer (Dee Wallace) die in the process, what better way to seek revenge than go after Lulu’s (Emme Rylan) husband, Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna)

But, could it be that Dante also could find himself drawn to this girl? Thus far, he seems to be the only one comforting her.  In this newly released promo from ABC and General Hospital, Lulu walks in with Rocco, and sees some kind of hugging going on.

In On-Air On-Soaps recent interview with GH’s Dominic Zamprogna, the actor did allude to the fact that maybe this time it would be an interesting twist if Dante had another women interested in him, since Dante has had to put up with the likes of Johnny Zacchara (Brandon Barash) and other men from Lulu’s life in the past.

Watch the promo after the jump, which also features Sam (Kelly Monaco) finding Jason’s (Billy Miller) wedding ring, Carly (Laura Wright) confronting Ric (Rick Hearst) and more!

…Michael, did you watch the clip? Valerie’s clearly upset and Dante’s comforting her, there’s nothing sexy about the hug at all. Lulu’s the one being an overreacting shrew, treating her grieving cousin like garbage while wiping up the tears of the man who tried to kill her and all her loved ones for like a year.

    Rebecca1 replied

That “man” who tried to kill her is her father who she loves. She’s “wiping up his tears” for the same reason. He’s her dad…and he’s traumatized and devastated at what he’s done, which was not intentional but caused by mental disease.

Lulu did extend sympathy, compassion and family, as well as offered her home to Valerie. I’m assuming after seeing her try to kill her father and in the arms of her husband she might, understandably, be a bit reactive.

    CeeCee replied

Oh, I absolutely agree with you, C. However, it is very possible for D and V to fall into something naughty. It’s not that far-fetched. Jimh has already predicted VANTE.
However, I do agree with you about all this understanding and pity offered to comfort and redeem Luke. I’m glad he’s going to prison. Are we to feel compassion? No way! I say…..Why can’t the same be shown towards Nina?
In fact, this woman was traumatized; was mentally and physically abused (injected with drugs by Maddie the Nuttie); was in a coma for 20 years; her baby torn from her (subconsciously, that is the reason she took the baby from Ava’s womb. An eye for an eye, as it were, according yo her fragmented thinking. She enacted, symbolically, what was done to her).
Actually, this would be the opportune time for revealing the truth about Kiki’s true mother. Oh, yeah…I’m like a dog (bitch) with a bone.
But, imagine that after all the contempt and hate Kiki has for Nina, she discovers they are indeed mother and daughter. Now, writers, wouldn’t that make for a much more compelling drama?
Anyway, I am not too crazy about Lulu or Valerie. If truth be known, I don’t much care who gets Dante.
I’m with Shay….I want Julie back.

    Shay replied

@CeeCee….I’m with you regarding the distaste for this ongoing pity-party for Puke….whether intentional or not, he has committed heinous acts for which he must pay, although after today’s episode, I’m not holding my breath, since it’s evident that we are going to be burdened with his tug-of-war mental scenario with Fluke for some time to come….it may make for great dramatic possibilities for AG, but at this late date, is asking too much of the audience to tolerate, forgive and forget. (Nice touch having him finally mentioning and acknowledging Laura though….too little too late? Perhaps he will embark on a course of treatment in Paris with his ex to coincide with his next Amsterdam sabbatical?) My patience and sympathy for this man have run out….he is first and foremost, a criminal, and needs to make some sort of restitution to society for his sins. (You know, like all the other miscreants running amok in Port Charles…Sonny, Carlos, Nina, Franco….oh, wait a minute, they’re all free!) And therein lies the problem….nobody ever seems to suffer for their misdeeds, except for Britt, who was banished to a life with her lunatic father. The inmates are running the asylum, er, town, so to speak, and the only person who is ever locked away (at least on a semi-permanent basis…) for their unseemly behavior is the oft-institutionalized Heather. You may still harbor empathy for Nina (and Sappy) for their unbalanced escapades, but I don’t. Quite frankly, I think both of them are still many a fruit loop short of a full bowl and are dangerous….just wait until things aren’t going their way, and they again shall snap! Nina is already well on that path with her squirrely, shifty, evasive body language and Mary Poppins is using the obsessive “L” word for the baby she once tried to kill…..makes me very uneasy. (And please, please, please, do not let her get her Sapster hooks into the vulnerable Michael….perhaps Lante should ship Val to stay with Tracy and she can “comfort” the Quartermaine heir…sort of a mutual therapy session for them! Works for me!) Just too many messes being made here that will be a devil to clean up….I’m officially bored and disgusted with all these unsavory developments, particularly those of the perturbing Phyllina and insufferable Sappy. Time to start skipping episodes again….P.S. Maybe nuKiki will begin regularly exhibiting anti-social, psychotic tendencies and then we shall know for sure she belongs to Nina….I know you haven’t yet lost hope for that plot twist, CeeCee!!!!!

    CeeCee replied

    @Shay.
You are just too funny…in a composedly hilarious way…does that make sense? Golly Gee…I wish I could put my words together with such flair….but, don’t you touch my Nina…LOL.
Actually, when you’re right, you’re right. Of course everyone suspect and pins the kidnapping on her…but, she’s been good, yes? Now, I am wavering…hmmmm. I guess we can’t be sure.
Nonetheless, Silas must have tested Avery’s blood to match it with her mother’s.
    Voila’…the baby disappeared….meaning, Avery’s blood and Ava’s are a match. Guess
    where the baby is?

Yes, Shay…I feel sick even thinking of writing the name ‘Luke’ and the moniker ‘Fluke’.
This is all being played out to draw sympathy from the audience. I am sure it will work for many…but as with yourself, it just ‘ain’t’ happening for me. AG, will win the Emmy, he deserves it…however, let’s hope that will be the end of him.
Kiki is Nina’s…why else was Kiki’s blood not viable ; and Avery’s was?
    Hmmmm….psychotic tendencies? Haha….as I said, too funny….later girl.

    Robyn replied

Michael & Valerie are first cousins once removed. Gross.

    Harry replied

Another brilliantly written post brought to you by Shay.
However, one little quibble–I completely concur with you that no one in Port Charles is ever really held accountable for their actions. Yes, Port Charles has become the Island of Misfit Criminals.
This is especially true of Dr. O, who is now the Chief of Staff despite being a kidnapping, torturing psychopath. I know you adore Dr O, Shay, so are you giving her a pass because in your estimation the actress is over-the-top fabulously wonderful?

    Shay replied

@Harry….Thank you once again for your kind comments, and yes, I do willingly concede that I give my favorite ferocious fraulein, Dr. O., a bit of a pass for her past bad behavior….not because I don’t believe she shouldn’t be punished for her malfeasance, but due to the fact that the standard for excusing criminally insane capers has been carved in stone for such a long time that to single her out would be, in my opinion, unfair. There used to be a time in Port Charles when at least a few arch-villains would suffer for their misdeeds, but now it is just open season for anything and everything, no holds barred….it has risen to the point of being absurd and ridiculous. Nobody pays the piper….however, if Luke, Sonny, Carly, Julian, Carlos, Helena, Faison, Nina, Franco, even Ava—provided she hasn’t already assumed room temperature—etc. are made to serve their debt to society, then by all means, lead Liesl off to the hoosegow, too. Particularly since she is just as entertaining behind bars as at large….makes no difference to me! As long as the delightfully outrageous Obrecht remains somewhere on the GH canvas, then I am a happy camper! (And may we please bring back her Swiss Sis, Magda, too???? Kathleen Gati and Donna Mills are comedic gold together! It hasn’t been the same without Maddie!)

    Shay replied

@Robyn….It’s not as if it hasn’t happened before in GH history…..check out Celia Quartermaine and Jimmy Lee Holt. They were kissin’ cousins, too!!!!

    Harry replied

Thank you for that completely reasonable explanation Shay which really should not be reasonable but in the topsy turvy world of GH, it makes perfect sense.
    I get it now.

    Shay replied

@Harry….You are most welcome. As you so correctly point out, such an explanation should not be considered logical, but given the current sad state of affairs in Port Charles’ justice system, it does indeed work. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again….the inmates are running the asylum!

This is ridiculous…..Dante and Lulu are the only normal, nuclear family left on the GH canvas, so of course, the show runners are determined to tamper with them. This is a terrible idea, but even more so since Julie Marie Berman was not chosen to play Valerie. At least there would have been some interest seeing Dante playing off dueling Lulus for his attentions, but I still would have been against the notion of breaking up the one stable, traditional marriage found in Port Charles.

su0000, you are SO right about there being no happily ever afters. I’ve been looking through soap archives, and the solid, stable, long lasting couples I have found are the matriarch/patriarch types like Tom and Alice Horton on DOOL who came on that show as a mature couple with adult children. It’s way too early for Lulu to be making donuts. I love the idea of Lante … I don’t like the idea of Dante being written OOC … but it’s the soap world and things change.

    Harry replied

I was not aware Dante had died.

Well for those who wanted Dante to come to life with Val, finally got their wish. The cousins-in-law had a fling a few weeks ago, due to the fact he thought Lulu was cheating with Dillon. When Lulu explained everything, he felt like a fool but has chosen to hide the fling. Many fans feel Val is destined to have ONS kid.

    davlestev1 replied

She’s mixed race…so what would have been the since in that…and why would JMB come back to play another Spencer against her past performance AS A SPENCER…what show are you watching??? UNDER THE DOME???

    Reply

    Shay replied

@davlestev1….Before this new character was introduced, there was buzz that JMB was possibly returning to GH in another role, presumably as her original character’s cousin, which would be Valerie. Hence, having read that, I cannot feel anything but disappointment at the actual casting that transpired. This notion did not emanate from my own fevered imagination, ala “Under the Dome,” which you referenced, but from a sadly incorrect spoiler. Too bad, by the way, it would have been epic to see this fine actress back on the Port Charles canvas!

    Timmm replied

None of these idiots in Port Chuck have said, “Hey, Valerie is mixed race, I wonder who her father is?” Its great that color means nothing in Soapland but if were to be semi-real, someone would have to wonder.

    dmr replied

I have to agree with you; but, I don’t think JMB left on great terms..I think she was upset over the material she was given the last year or so on the show..wonder if she would entertain a comeback.?? Would be more interesting to watch, however!

    Caitie replied

I don’t expect to see Julie back on GH anytime soon – but, I agree, a return would be very interesting. And I would certainly enjoy watching her perform!

    CeeCee replied

Yes, Shay… Lulu and Dante are the nucleus that binds GH in the arena of families. But, C has s very legitimate point, as have you. Julie left not too long after I started watching GH, but it was sufficient time for me to really take to her. She and Dante had that connection which cannot be put into words. I do not feel the vibe with this Lulu.
Of course, I get that Lulu loves her father, but how can she or Tracy or anyone not think that Luke is a criminal…..he is!!!! How can anyone be sure he is not faking?
Also, I believe, it will be Lulu’s constant attention
and vigilance toward her father that will break the proverbial camel’s back.
Nonetheless, I agree with you, this couple should stay together. I just do not care about them so much. They are not my favorite people. Perhaps if Dante washed his hair….I am so sorry, Shay…LOL. That was uncalled for….I’m a bad girl !! Later, ma belle.
Ps. Please pardon any typos …hard to type on my iPhone . AND , on a ferry…even worse…LOL.

    Shay replied

Sounds like a recipe for seasickness, CeeCee! LOL. What I was endeavoring to express was not so much an abiding affection for the characters of Dante and Lulu as a couple, but simply the notion that there should be at least one happy, well-adjusted, faithful and traditional pairing left in Port Charles, and that would be the Falconeris. Plus, I don’t find marital infidelity to be an entertaining subject…as we have repeatedly mentioned, there are enough others in town to play the endless game of musical beds…those who are otherwise unattached or in various stages of less committed forms of relationships….let them have at it. (Well, except for the insatiable Alexis….that is one frisky creature that I can safely say I have no interest in ever again watching get her over-50ish freak-on.)

    CeeCee replied

    @Shay
Yup. I more or less said the same thing. If one is single, okay, he/she can be my guest……Have as many lovers he/she wants (just use protection…lol), but when in a relationship, whether it be marriage or not, there should be no stepping out. I am very moralistic about that. Yes, people fall in and out of love. I get it. Just be honest about it.
I don’t even consider Alexis in the running. That’s not real; it’s a joke. There is no way! Her legs must feel like jelly….oops!

    Caitie replied

You write interesting posts, Cee Cee – and hit on some of the things I’m seeing as well – including the possibility that Lulu’s sometimes blind allegiance to Luke could prove to be more of a relationship barrier between Dante and Lulu than Valerie will. In the past Dante was understanding and supportive of Lulu’s affection for Luke and her family – and her sometimes hare-brained schemes to support them, especially Luke. (Think bordello story in 2011.) However, that was before he was terrorized by Fluke, knocked unconscious with a crowbar and left to die with a corpse and a bomb in a basement.

You mention that Julie left soon after you started watching GH, so perhaps you aren’t familiar with the more complicated father/daughter relationship that existed between Julie’s Lulu and Luke – complications which were only fully resolved in 2012, a year before Julie left. Julie’s Lulu loved her father and longed for more of his presence in her life. However, Luke was often absent and, as well, had influenced Lulu’s young mind with his cynicism about life, love and relationships – so much so that one of the key elements in the growth of the Lante love story was Dante’s love eventually overcoming Lulu’s inability to trust and commit. It really was a beautiful journey between Dante and Lulu. However, from her teen years until 2012, Lulu had long periods of estrangement from and anger toward her father. Now, there were really good times there as well. But all was not hearts and flowers and Lulu was certainly able to see Luke’s darker side – and to be very affected by it. But, since Emme took over the role, that background history and that complexity have seemed to be erased. In the summer of 2013, it was briefly dismissed when Lulu sweetly and happily told her father in one scene that he was always there for her … and, more, recently, when she said to Valerie: “For most of my life, he’s been this amazing, caring, hilarious dad.” I just don’t remember that and I think that the character of Lulu (regardless of who plays her) has been done a disservice by wiping the slate clean of her more complex and sometimes less forgiving relationship with Luke. I really miss it in this current story.

    CeeCee replied

    @Caitie.
Thank you you for such a lovely backstory, Caitie. Sometimes I find it a bit difficult giving an opinion to experts of GH, such as you and so many others.
The characters of Lulu and Dante have not struck a chord with me. Not with Emme, anyway. She is still Abby Newman to me.
The same could be said about nuKiki. My heart takes a dive….a great pang each time I see her. I feel as if Kristen was run off stage from all the complaints about her Kiki character…now, look at what we got!!!!

    Harry replied

I always thought Julia’s Lulu was a perfect mediation between the gritty Luke and the ethereal Laura. Julia had her mother’s beauty and an air of mystery about her but she also had her father’s cynicism and a sense of world weariness.
The actress now playing Lulu (forgive me, I don’t know names too well) just seems a tad too cute and perky for me. She’s a good actress but the persona she projects seems more applicable to a character one might see on Nickelodeon.

    Shay replied

So true, Harry….Julie Marie Berman was the ultimate amalgam of the Spencers….she captured Laura’s captivating spark and angelic blonde good looks and ever so capably combined them with Luke’s street smart savvy and innate toughness. That once in a lifetime casting, for better or worse, would have haunted any actress who tried to fill JMB’s Lulu shoes, but having such a vast contrast in physical and personality traits between the two ladies who have inhabited this role makes their differences all the more striking. While I find Emme Rylan to also be a convincing offspring of her mother, there has rarely been much evidence of the Spencer within, although I at least find her appealing porcelain beauty and pleasing presentational skills a compensation for that general lack of inner diamond-in-the-roughness, particularly given many of the other less attractive and untalented young females currently found on the GH canvas. Slim pickings, indeed.

    CeeCee replied

    @harry and Shay.

Harry, you gave me little personal traits of Tracy’s character and particular idiosyncracies, such as uttering barbs that slice through one’s heart and wound one’s pride. Your writing is such, very similar to Shay’s, that your words dance before my eyes, creating a wonderfully descriptive picture.

Then, there’s Shay. She has that amazing knack of replying with her own barbs…..this time, without being too obvious.
Point in fact: Harry, you implied that Sabrina’s head serves as a table (you’re a bad boy, Harry….not nice….LOL). Shay, nabbed your words instantly, making Sabrina’s presence in the Q mansion importantly serviceable. Did I get that right? Incredibly witty, Shay. I am still laughing.!!!!!!!

I would like to see Traci stride into the parlor with a highball glass in her hand and place it on Sappy’s head mistaking her presence with that of a table.

    Shay replied

@Harry….While I totally agree with you that I miss the superbly biting wit of “Ye Olde Tracy,” were she to operate in the manner you suggested, it would demonstrate that Sappy does actually have a useful function in Port Charles, and as such, would rather kill my ongoing contention that she does not. And now we’re supposed to buy that Sappy is just so gosh darn brilliant that SHE has to be the one playing Nancy Drew to connect the dots on Morgan and Kiki’s lame-brained scheme? I feel compelled to explain my ‘Disco Dante’ reference although no is asking.
It’s a private joke between me and …….my self (unless there are some old classmates from my junior high school class who post here).
In the late 70′s I was in junior high (that’s what they called middle school in the old days) and disco had hit it big. The most popular boy in my class was named Dante and he loved Disco. He wore high topped, bell bottomed jeans, a puca shell necklace and he kept a huge comb in his back pocket which he frequently took out in order to come back his perfectly coiffed, feathered back hair.
We called him Disco Dante–he’s even listed as Disco Dante in our yearbook. The funny thing is he looks a lot like GH’s Dante.

I like both Dante and Lulu. Not everybody on a soap has to be over the top. They have the soap ” it” factor…meaning they’re both gorgeous…and I like their grounded home life. With that said….IF Dante was going to step out for any reason, I think he has great chemistry with Valerie. She, too, is gorgeous, and they have an easy rapport. If Morgan hadn’t turned so obnoxious she’d look great with him, too. If they’d have chemistry remains to be seen. Or! ‘Nother thought…she could wind up with Nicolas and wind up being Lulus cousin and sister in law. Possibilities are endless…

    Caitie replied

Like you, Cee Cee, I’m not jumping on the bandwagon suggesting an imminent affair between Dante and Valerie. But I also agree with Rebecca – so far I’m interested in Valerie and the actress who portrays her. And I do like the possibility of introducing a character with a bit of an “edge” – that “late 20s” age group needs it. Now I haven’t liked all of her scenes, but I’ve seen elements that I like and that show promise for more to come. Like you, I liked her beginning scenes. As well, I appreciated the combination of fear and defiance she showed with Flukey Luke in her apartment. She convinced me of Valerie’s understandable emotions there. In addition, I liked the scenes on Monday with Dante in the loft – quieter, gentler and more introspective. As for being angry, I didn’t feel a lot of that; however, as for holding some residual anger and mistrust or Luke – good for her – Valerie has earned that and it’s important that the actress shows us a bit of that emotion. It’s even more important that she plays an underlying sadness – and I see the actress also doing that right now. I’ve seen enough of actors going all perky and happy – even within the same episode – when the prevailing life circumstances suggest that a sadder or angrier mood should be shown. So kudos to her for the tone of sadness that I felt on Monday. Now I think it’s still too early for me – it can take weeks or even months to really assess her.; however, so far, I see enough positives to want her to stay around so I can get to know her better. Last point – I smiled at the scrunchy face comment. Yes, that does happen, but let’s just say I’ve definitely seen “scrunchier faces” on actors other the two mentioned in this thread.

    Rebecca1 replied

Hi Caitie…I totally agree with you regarding Valerie and her anger, grief, etc, it’s always bothered me how quickly soap people get over their losses. Much more realistic to have her display mixed emotions, from grief, despair and wanting revenge to lost, sad, and disbelief that she was capable ( or so she thinks) of killing Luke. Between that and her funky, cool, city vibe I think she could add a very much needed alternative to the more conservative (and I’m not talking about religion or politics but rather style/attitude) to the show. Actually, I could see her becoming friends with Sam, who prior to finding Alexis and her sisters was alone/had no family too.

In the short time that Valerie has been on GH, I’ve been impressed with her potential. She came into the story at a very emotionally pitched time. She convinced me that she completely belongs with the Spencer clan. She has many of the characteristics that the first Lulu possessed….a soulfulness and inner strength simmering below the surface. I think she will be a wonderful fit with Dante if the story is written well. So far, the story has them bonding over their closeness to their single Moms. This is a good direction for a start. I’d like to see more of Val/Dante (Vante) and have their relationship grow. They have great potential and I’m definitely a fan!

  14. Caitie says:

I agree that Valerie has very good reason to be shocked, sad, and angry about all that has happened to her in about 48 hours. However, yesterday, I didn’t see shock and anger – just sadness and regret for her actions with Luke … and appreciation for Dante having been so kind and understanding.

I thought there was a pleasing, natural ease to their scenes together and I thought that both characters had really good POV, POV which can help establish a future relationship. But I’m still not sure that is going to be a romantic connection – although it may look that way to Lulu.

However, if it were, it would certainly fit with Mr. Zamprogna’s recent interview comments here and elsewhere. And I can see his point! All actors want to play a variety of scenarios with a variety of characters.

I’m on the fence right now about The Valerie character. But I do think the actress has really risen to the job. Tough being parachuted into a extreme major story, that has a lot of controversy around it, at a critical point, and having to assume an important piece of the Fluke puzzle.

Don’t like to see her being set up to come between Lulu and Dante. Boring, same old, predictable! For instance whose her father? Since she’s bi-racial is there some connection between Edward Q and Mary Mae’s son Justus, and his offspring? Maybe she’s not just a Spencer but also a Quartermaine.

I like Sam. What I don’t like is that writers always let her get good PI leads, then never let her solve the case…all the while in stilettos. But they never let Anna solve much either. Pays to commit crime in PC.

If you can find clips on youtube you should check out the Mary Mae story. It was lovely. Not that I liked Edward cheating on Lila…She was in a class of her own. But they did it very tastefully. If I remember right it was done in b/w, Casablana style, with Edward thinking back to when he was away from home, serving as an officer in WW 2 and stationed in Europe or London. He would go to a small club in the evening and there was this wonderful singer…Mary Mae. You can take it from there. Then he came back home after the war, and the affair was over. He just wasn’t aware she became pregnant. They had her sing on GH…she had a wonderful bluesy voice. Sadly she’s passed away in real life, too, as have Edward and Lila. If you had been a GH fan then you would know why they are so loved, even now. Coincidentally the affair came to light years later when Luke, Laura and the kids came back to finally live in Port Charles. Guess whose house Laura wanted to buy…Mary Mae’s. Even then Luke was reluctant to settle down permantly after being on the run from Frank?

He’s young, aimless and the sibling rivalry is rearing it’s ugly head. Unfortunately, Carly hasn’t changed much since she arrived a young woman to PC. Hope this isn’t Morgan’s fate, because on his good days I like him. And we still have Spencer to deal with and he’s only 9 or 10?

Agree about Kiki. I think they’re going for Ava Jr. but this actress doesn’t convey any charm. I’m thinking Ron and Frank thought viewers wouldn’t accept Kristen as this version of The character and replaced her. Obviously can’t be sure, but her departure was too abrupt and unexpected so I’m not convinced it really was her desire to leave.

  19. Caitie says:

I have mixed feelings about all this because of how Dante has been written as so faithful and so much in love … and because, almost from the beginning nearly six years ago, the Lante love story has been written as one based on communication, compromise and commitment. So much so that from very early on in their love story –even before marriage – I saw the potential dilemma for writers, actors AND fans because I felt that Dante and Lulu were being given “end game” couple qualities way too soon – and that they would all be faced some day with the dilemma we now see of how to write for this SOAP OPERA couple. And there’s the thing – they are a soap opera couple and soaps don’t have a third act where all is fixed and resolved for characters and stories … and tied up with a pretty, happy bow (or not) … unless the show ends … or unless characters are written off.

In the meantime, soap characters go through a very long second act of transitions … and they do change partners … and sometimes develop new character traits. The conversations here and elsewhere sent me searching my memory banks and soap opera archives to try to find couples who have stayed together happily with little interruption for long periods of time … and who never had third party involvement. And I can tell you that, thus far, it’s been a very empty search – especially for young couples such as Dante and Lulu. I’d welcome examples others would like to share.

All other young couples I could find either started with other partners or eventually had other relationships – even engagements and marriages – and certainly endured LONG separations. Some of these separations were brought about by one of the actors actually leaving the show for a while. However, looking at what has worked historically on soaps to create widespread interest in characters and couples, I do expect that writers would have found ways to effect such separations even if both characters had stayed.

The stable, very “settled” couples I found were those who were established in the matriarch/patriarch roles. Examples: Tom and Alice Horton on DOOL … Shawn and Caroline Brady on DOOL … Lila and Edward Quartermaine on GH. All three of these couples came on the soap scene as mature characters with adult children – children around whose lives their stories could evolve. Even then, the waters were muddied for the second two of these couples with affairs. Dante and Lulu came together as a very young couple in their mid-twenties. Far too early to be in the matriarch/patriarch role. This is not real life … it’s a soap and Dante and Lulu’s lives and their relationship are still evolving in the soap world – not in the real world. It’s not yet time to send over to the DOOL for Alice Horton’s donut recipe for Lulu (although there were times in 2013-14 when I felt that time was at hand).

I understand why some might want to continue to enjoy watching this pretty, happy couple in an uninterrupted way. However, I continue to wonder if being elevated so high on the happy couple pedestal is limiting story and acting opportunities for the characters and the actors. Dante and Lulu can still be an end game pairing, but more along the lines of all their predecessors – with intervals apart and even with other partners. For me, having that happen would not ruin them. In fact, I might be MORE interested in them.

And, all that said, I’m not a proponent of cheating and contrived third parties to create this interest. However, there have been non-cheating opportunities in the past to significantly change up the Dante and Lulu dynamic, and I expect there could be more in the future.

    CeeCee replied

I appreciate your last paragraph immensely. Cheating does not make a man any more sensual or virile than a faithful one. ….nor does his cheating counterpart make her any more sexy or desirable than a loyal woman.

Yes, one sensually appealing thing about Dante can be how well DZ sells being a man so much in love, making superficial “cheating” stories difficult to tell for this character. And, for Valerie’s sake, I’m interested enough in her to not want to see her trivialized and made a plot point for contrived Lante angst just for the sake of momentary angst. In fact, as a newcomer trying to establish herself on the canvas, possibly she could be more damaged than Dante should a romantic liaison develop too quickly between them. Maybe down the road, depending on how she evolves – but not now.

So, perhaps the next step in this conversation is to look at how much weakness and what kind of weakness we can tolerate. Like you, I support fidelity. However, while I would prefer that Dante not “cheat,” I would continue to support him and root for him if he did – in the right circumstances. As I said in a post below, a single physical act will not ruin him for me. I do like my characters essentially good – but a bit flawed – and I love a good redemption story – a kind of story I think Dom could deliver very well.

And there can be other possibilities to introduce third parties into the Lante relationship – over time. For example, what will the reactions be if a liaison with Valerie or another woman happens while Dante and Lulu are emotionally and physically separated? If their differences over Luke, for example, create a difficult rift between them and they aren’t together for a while? Or – another option – will Dante still be seen as cheating if he develops feelings for Valerie but does not act on them? Would that still damage the lofty happy couple pedestal on which Dante and Lulu have been placed?

So many possible variations on this theme.

Ric, as a man whose moral compass is shattered, is an interesting example to use for comparison with good, faithful, stable Dante. If Ric cheats, it’s just another day at the office and, regardless of what momentary temptation he might resist, he is still a really immoral guy. On the other hand, I think Dante is a good enough to rebound from a mistake like this without being permanently tarnished. His moral compass can be bent, but not broken. And Dom is good enough at playing internal angst to make this a worthy, “rootable” story. At least for me.

And I thrive on internal couple angst. People speak about “all Lante have been through,” but, except for a few seconds since 2013, their troubles have all been coming from external forces and baby stories. However, when I look back on my time since 2009 as an fan of both characters and the couple, some of my favorite “Lante” scenarios were those in which there was internal couple angst – a couple of breakups and the process of getting back together … Lulu’s struggle to accept the dangers of Dante’s job after his second brush with death from being shot. Yes, I liked “the pretty,” but I invested more because of the “not-so-pretty.”

And I loved the very real relationship talks that Dante and Lulu used to have – one in particular on August 2, 2012 (date mentioned if you want to look it up – along with Jan 30, 2012 – an excellent look at the Luke/Lulu relationship). Interestingly, in the Dante/Lulu conversation, Lulu says “The forever word scares me.” And Dante tells her, “There are no guarantees,” and goes on to say: “I want to spend every day I can with you and, it that turns into forever, even better.” A romantic pledge of love – but a touch of realism, both for the real world and for the soap world.

I understand happy is boring and angst is good. To write
Dante cheating is so OOC that it’s not believable. Dante has always been written to be such a good guy–this just doesn’t make sense and may end up hurting the Dante character much more than it helps. Being paired with someone like Valerie is not going to give him more airtime or story. He can be written for without cheating if they would just do it.

I am not advocating a cheating story for Dante either and I respect your POV. However, if he were to do so, I would still support the character. I don’t think a single physical act determines a person’s worth – and I would still be able to see a lot of goodness in Dante depending on the circumstances and on his reaction. I’m very able to accept flawed characters as long as they are mostly good.

That said, I do think there are many other ways to create stories in general – and to create tensions within a romantic relationship if that is where the writers want to go – without playing the cheating card.

As for Dante, I do think he has lost ground already in his current happy marriage mode – sometimes being called “Mr. Lulu” and referred to as Cop # 2 (after Nathan). Perhaps there is such a thing as being TOO good- something the actor himself mentioned in a recent interview.

Now, since Christmas, the writing for Dante has improved – and I’m happy to see that. However, it’s improved mostly in scenes in which his romantic relationship is not the focus … so there is a broader scope for Dante to be seen and appreciated outside “love” stories.

I read a comment yesterday saying that Dom is “turning out to be a good actor.” A comment that both surprised me and upset me because Dom has been a good actor all the time he’s been on GH – and before. So maybe this comment highlights that Dom has not been seen at his best for some time now – not because he lacks talent but because he has lacked material (After all, the actor did say that he felt he had nothing to submit for Emmy consideration from 2014.)

Again, I’m not advocating cheating. IF Dante and/or Lulu have other relationships, I would rather these relationships happen when they are separated for other reasons. However, even if a cheating story did occur, I have faith in Dom to pull it off. It’s Dom ability to sell a man so faithfully and completely in love which has brought us to this point. And I have complete faith in his ability to sell a story of regret and redemption just as well. This type of intense, personal, raw emotion is in Dom’s wheelhouse … and I can see him keeping Dante mostly in character and wowing us with his heartfelt emotions. As I said at the beginning, a single physical act will not ruin Dante for me – and could lead to a story which would make me root for him even more.

I have watched and loved Dante faithfully since 2009 and this “single act of cheating”—as you say—will turn me off the character completely. Because then he’s not the Dante I have loved for almost 6 years. He’s like every other jerk on the canvas. I’m gone at that point and no amount of groveling or regret on his part will bring me back. I have a feeling there are more Dante/Lante fans out there who will agree with me. When you strip away the part of Dante’s character that has so loved and adored his wife for a fling with someone he barely knows–then he wasn’t the character we fell in love with in the first place.

Great post, Caitie. I wrote you a really involved reply, then proceeded to delete it accidentally. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Ahem.

Suffice to say I agree with your every word. Love Dante. Lol..I don’t have the umoh to recreate my original response. But, kudos!

WAS a long time viewer of Lante. There was a natuaral, organic chemistry that I saw in them that for whatever reason is now lacking! Unfortunately becoming the token “happy couple” on a soap has painted them into a corner. Once in awhile they get “aired out” for viewing! Sad really. you would think that angst and soapy drama would be something many actors want to portray. Having original LuLu back as he cousin would have made for great soapy drama! Alas I’m afraid that because of some behind the scenes drama, that ship has sailed! So while I don’t necessarily advocate “cheating” I do advocate a break-up with Lante &/or possible hookup with Vante! I did see chem between LuLu an Johnny the last go round. or if you don’t want to repeat history, what about a Spixie/Naxie/NaLu quadrangle?! I fear the Lante ship has/is sinking and in order for us to care about them as characters, we need something to root for! No offense-but this is a soap, not Leave It To Beaver or Father Knows Best!

This has been the most fascinating “read”. … more like a tale of “Two Lantes”. When Julie and Dom first brought the couple to screen, the were the hottest thing around.. even the subject of ET in 2010 with a “behind the scenes look” of their fist love scene. It made me sad to read comments above that “Dante” has pretty much lost his sex appeal (I paraphrase) when just a couple of years ago he was having some pretty hot sex with his sexy wife (JMB’s Lulu).. Which now brings us to Lante 2.0 with ER and instead of “being the story” they have been primarily used as plot points to tell other stories with limited POV as characters. And labeled the “Happy Token Couple” to somehow satisfy a contingent of viewers who require that in their viewing. Which is fine – just that Dante and Lulu were never ever intended to be that couple. I don’t know where this will all go. I do think RC has been a bit “heavy handed” in the writing – but if was to generate any interest… I think he has accomplished that. I would prefer Valerie firm up her own story as Lante implode .. then see where things go. IMO the couple has changed so dramatically since 2013.. I feel like I’m already there.
