Another memorable performer known for her work in the daytime community as well as countless motion pictures and primetime TV shows has passed away.

News today out of The Hollywood Reporter has that actress Patricia Barry, who played Addie Horton on Days of our Lives (1971-74) and the evil Peg “Cobra” English on All My Children (1980-1981) has died at the age of 93.  Barry also appeared on Guiding Light as the scheming Miss Sally Gleason (1984-1987) and in the 90′s on ABC’s Loving as the matriarch of the upper-crust Aldens, Isabelle.

But it was her role as Doug Williams (Bill Hayes) wife on Days, and the mother of Hope (Kristian Alfonso), that gained her notoriety.  Of course, her other daughter was Julie (Susan Seaforth Hayes), who soon would fall in love with her mother’s husband.  On AMC, Peg was Brooke English’s (Julia Barr) mother who was later revealed to be a leader of drug cartel!

One of the earliest members of Women in Film and a former president of the nonprofit advocacy organization, Barry’s publicist announced that Patricia had died peacefully Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles.

Survivors include her daughters Miranda Barry, a former executive in charge of global Sesame Street productions, and Stephanie; son-in-law Mark; grandchildren Alixanne and Hailey; and godchildren Tracy and Stephen.  Memorial services are planned for early 2017 in Los Angeles and New York.

I have very fond memories of Patricia Barry’s wonderful performances in feature films, episodic television and as the terrible “Cobra” of All My Children. What a great and varied career. May she rest in peace.

Sad to hear of her passing. I also thought she was on “For Richer, For Poorer” or “Lovers and Friends”; maybe both. Anyone know for sure?

Our Mom will be there to welcome her into Heaven. She followed the ‘soaps’ every day and knew the stars history and could tell you all about the ‘character’ they played even if they had been on other shows over the years. Patricia Barry was one of her favorites. May she rest in peace.

  8. Lulu says:

I was wondering about Patricia weeks ago; I knew that she was alive,

  9. blake says:

I was really young but I remember her as miss sally on Guiding Light. I remember her being with H.B. and I think she was with him for his money. And I think H.B. and Alexandra were romantically involved around the same time if I’m not mistaken.

  10. Patricio says:

Soap Opera Royaly! I remember her from AMC when I was a kid, they don’t write me like that anymore!
I saw her in a a restaurant in New York City in the early 80s I assumed she was with her family. She was gracious as fans approached her. This was a very nice place but she was polite and kind to those rude fans! The mater d got rid of them! It was the last time me or my mother every interrupted a celebrity!

Another beloved daytime legend has passed away. Beyond sad. In 1981, I became such a big fan of Patricia Barry when I first noticed her playing Peg/”Cobra” aka Brooke’s mother on AMC. Rest In Peace, Miss Patricia. You will be truly missed. Amen.

  12. Nik says:

Loved her on AMC but love her more on old TV shows like Wagon Train, Murder She Wrote, Gunsmoke (B&W version) and others. She was a Grand Dame.

    Patricio replied

Great post Niki- those classic old tv shows are loaded with future soap and movie stars!

  13. Steve says:

I remember her as Cobra on AMC. She was going to kill Brooke. Fantastic writing of that story line. I also remember her on GL, with H.B. Lewis. I saw her on an old Perry Mason episode and on Threes Company. She was a snobby church lady that was friends with Pastor Snow, Chrissy’s father. She played all rolls fantastically!
